Kia Sorento

Three years after its launch, the fourth-generation Kia Sorento has undergone an early mid-lifecycle modification. The midsize SUV, which was unveiled in Korea, displays Kia’s most recent and refined style language, with an updated front face and a revamped interior. There are also plans to release international versions later this year with Malaysia in the mix as well.

The reworked front end, which is headlined by a new set of smaller and vertically stacked LED headlights surrounding the tiger-nose grille, is the first thing you’ll notice. Cleaner lines can be seen in the bumper, and the hood is now perfectly in line with the nose.

After a period of obscurity, Kia is ready to move forward with great determination and has formulated a plan to grow its volume in the ASEAN region. Having established a new business operation in April this year, the Korean carmaker has a partner – Bermaz Auto – which took over the brand from Naza (along with Peugeot as well). Bermaz Auto and Kia have formed a joint-venture company called Kia Malaysia which will manage the brand’s activities in the country. Distribution and retail operations will be handled by Dinamikjaya Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Bermaz Auto.

Kia Malaysia’s operations will include local assembly, the first time the carmaker is making a direct investment for assembly operations. It considers this to be a key factor for growth as it will enable Kia vehicles to be sold around the ASEAN region at competitive prices. This is because they can be assembled in Malaysia and exported to other markets without import duties imposed by those countries, a privilege accorded by the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) agreement.

Previously, there were some Kia models assembled locally but the volume was small and therefore not efficient. Now, Kia has set a target of 100,000 units in total from 2022 to 2026. The vehicles will be for the Malaysian market as well as export. The export plans are ambitious and will account for more than 50% of annual production each year. By 2026, the company expects to export up to 19,000 units from the 30,000 units targeted for that year.

The vehicles – comprising new generations of the Carnival, Sorento, Sportage and Niro – will be assembled at the Inokom plant in Kedah. This plant, which began operations in the 1990s, assembles for brands such as Mazda, BMW and MINI. Incidentally, among the plant’s shareholder’s is Hyundai Motor Company, which is affiliated with Kia in the Hyundai Motor Group. Hyundai’s share is 15% and it has been a shareholder since the plant started in 1997.

From what Kia Malaysia has revealed of the coming products, all four models will be produced with combustion engines as well as electrified powertrains. The Carnival and Sportage will be hybrid electric while the Sorento and Niro will also have plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. A fully-electric version of the Niro will also be produced, and this would enjoy attractive incentives offered by the government for battery-electric vehicles.

ICE: Internal Combustion Engine | HEV: Hybrid Electric Vehicle | PHEV: Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle | BEV: Battery Electric Vehicle

The Inokom factory in Kedah which will assemble Kia vehicles. It began operations in 1997 assembling Hyundai and Renault vehicles.

Omitting passenger cars may not be a disadvantage as Kia’s past models have enjoyed limited success. Their SUVs have met with good response and the new Carnival is also a big leap from the previous generation. Now the task for Dinamikjaya will be to assure customers that it will offer the best aftersales support to those who buy a Kia. The company will examine all past promises to customers and see how to best move forward with existing owners.

Teaming up with Bermaz Auto is advantageous for Kia as the team in this company have long experience in all aspects of the auto industry. They are led by Dato’ Seri Ben Yeoh, whose career spans 5 decades, during which time he has been involved in brands like Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Daihatsu, Proton, Mazda, Skoda and Hyundai. Senior members of his team were even involved in setting up and running the Inokom factory before it was acquired by Sime Darby Motors.

Bermaz Auto takes over Kia business in Malaysia, with local assembly to commence in 2022.

With many accidents occurring due to a driver not seeing another vehicle or motorcyclist in his vehicle’s ‘blind spot’, many carmakers have installed blind spot monitors which scan along the sides of the vehicle. When the sensors detect another vehicle nearby, the driver is alerted by warning lights on the door mirrors, or on the mirror mount inside the vehicle. Some systems may also use sound although this is often found to be too intrusive and irritating.

Honda has a good system called Lane Watch which uses a small camera on the left (or right) side of the vehicle to show real-time imagery. The image is displayed on the screen in the dashboard and the advantage of this is that the driver does not have to turn the head so much. With a mirror-mounted warning system, the driver has to have his head turned to the right to notice the flashing light.

Now Kia has gone further with such a driver aid with its new Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM) technology. This ‘second pair of eyes’ for drivers is designed to enhance driving safety by providing a good view of both the left and right blind spots of the vehicle. The view is shown within the instrument panel so the driver does not need to swivel his head.

Kia Blind Spot Monitor

This advanced driving assistance feature, activated whenever the driver uses the turn signal, displays a high-resolution video feed on the left or right side of the TFT-LCD instrument cluster. The video of the blind spot briefly takes the place of either the speedometer or tachometer display while still showing the driver the vehicle’s current speed.

The video feed comes from discreet wide-angle, high-resolution cameras, one hidden in each of the door mirror housings. These provide a wider viewing angle than the mirrors themselves to give drivers a clear view of other vehicles or motorcyclists coming up alongside

Kia Blind Spot Monitor

The BVM is one of a range of functions on the fully-digital ‘Supervision’ 12.3-inch instrument cluster of the latest Sorento. Other systems include a Surround View Monitor and Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist, along with Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist.

The ‘Supervision’ digital instrument cluster is designed to deliver information to the driver as clearly as possible. With a high-definition 1920 x 720-pixel display, the digital cluster replaces conventional speedometer and tachometer dials with a single, seamless display, incorporating pin-sharp digital dials for road and engine speeds.

A multi-function display between the dials displays turn-by-turn GPS navigation instructions, audio information, and in-depth trip information, as well as vehicle diagnostics alerts, and pop-up notifications linked to the car’s various active safety and driver assist technologies.

Details of the all-new Kia Sorento’s platform and powertrain revealed!

Following the release of the first official pictures of the all-new Kia Sorento that will have its global debut next month, the Korean carmaker has now revealed details of its new platform and powertrains. The latest Sorento will be the first SUV to use Kia’s new platform when production commences later this year.

The overall length of new Sorento is 10 mm more than its predecessor while the wheelbase is lengthened 35 mm to 2815 mm. The cabin is now claimed to provide more room than in many other midsize SUVs with intelligent packaging offering class-leading cargo space.

2020 Kia Sorention Gen 4

When the first-generation Sorento was launched in 2002, it sat on a robust body-on-frame chassis, a typical approach for most SUVs at that time. The shift to a monocoque structure – similar to passenger cars – for the second generation Sorento in 2009 marked a major change on-road character and behaviour.

Kia’s new midsize SUV platform represents a similarly important leap forward for the next-generation Sorento, allowing new standards to be set in its segment for space, practicality, efficiency and quality. The new platform positions the battery pack beneath the passenger cell so there is no impact on cabin or luggage space.

2020 Kia Sorention Gen 4

For Korea, Europe and North America, the structure and layout of the platform accommodates the new Smartstream turbocharged hybrid powertrain. Representing the first application of electrified power in the Sorento line-up, the new powertrain comprises a 1.6-litre T-GDi (turbocharged gasoline direct injection) engine, and a 44.2 kW electric motor which draws energy from a 1.49 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack. The electrified powertrain produces a combined total output of 230 ps power and 350 Nm torque, with high levels of performance but low exhaust emissions.

There is also a new 4-cylinder 2.2-litre Smartstream diesel engine producing 202 ps/440 Nm. This is paired with Kia’s new 8-speed wet double-clutch transmission (8DCT), developed to offer the smooth shifting characteristics of a conventional automatic while enhancing efficiency over dry clutch DCTs.

2020 Kia Sorention Gen 4

Another powertrain option is the Smartstream 2.5-litre T-GDi engine (281 ps/421 Nm) which is also paired with the new 8DCT. This turbocharged petrol engine combines direct injection and multi-point injection technology, enabling it to subtly adapt its combustion cycle at different engine speeds to enhance performance and efficiency in everyday use.

Additional powertrains will be announced in future, including petrol engines and a powerful new plug-in hybrid variant.

In addition to its new platform and powertrains, the new Sorento introduced a range of high-tech safety and convenience features said to differentiate it further from other midsize SUVs. It will have Kia’s first Multi-collision Brake system which can mitigate the severity of secondary collisions. This system automatically applies vehicle brakes when the airbags (up to 8 available) have been deployed after an initial collision, further protecting occupants from secondary frontal or side impacts.

In some markets, the Sorento will also have a remote smartphone Surround View Monitor option. This allows users to check the vehicle’s surroundings with their smartphone in conjunction with the in-vehicle Surround View Monitor to maximize parking convenience.

4th generation Kia Sorento will be its most high-tech model to date

One of the earlier SUV models from the Korean carmaker, the Sorento enters its 4th generation this year, with the global debut to be at the 2020 Geneva International Motor Show. The Sorento sits at the heart of Kia’s reinvigorated global SUV line-up which also includes the Seltos, Stonic, Sportage, and Telluride.

It is the result of a global collaborative effort between all Kia’s design network which has studios in Korea, Europe and North America. For this new generation, the designers adopted the concept of ‘refined boldness’, maintaining the robust, tough-looking aesthetic of earlier generations.

All-new platform with new design
The fourth-generation model sits on an all-new platform that is said to raise standards in the midsize SUV segment for space, practicality, efficiency and quality. The latest design incorporates sharper lines and uninterrupted surfaces, making it noticeably more sculpted than its more round-edged predecessor.

Besides more contemporary geometric details and swept-back, elongated proportions, the assertive ‘face’ of the Sorento has evolved too. There’s a new interpretation of Kia’s hallmark ‘tiger nose’ grille. It’s wider and more expansive, wrapping organically around the integrated headlamps on each side. The headlamps themselves feature a new ‘tiger eye’ LED daytime running light, adding extra focus to the design by depicting the intense impression of the lines around a tiger’s eyes.

In profile, the proportions of the SUV are subtly adapted to make it appear longer, with shorter front and rear overhangs and a longer wheelbase. Its new proportions also extend the length of the bonnet, drawing the A-pillar 30 mm further back from the front axle for a more ‘cab-rearward’ design.

The trailing edge of the bonnet wraps around the front wings and turns into a single, strong character line which extends along the side of the Sorento and flows into the new vertical taillights.

Most high-tech Kia model to date
Inside, the upscale cabin has a sophisticated new design incorporating cutting-edge infotainment, supreme practicality, and premium-grade materials. It is described as one of the highest quality interior spaces found in any Kia to date. The progressive technologies available in the new model also make it the most high-tech vehicle Kia has ever put in showrooms.

Blending metallic trims, leather upholstery and embossed wood-effect surfaces, the interior also subtly integrates other technologies to enhance connectivity, driver assistance and infotainment. Its 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with audio-visual navigation system is complemented by a new 12.3-inch high-resolution digital instrument cluster.

Before we start, put aside your prejudices about the brand and to a further extent your perception of the quality of Korean vehicles, else, this article won’t be of any interest to you. This new Kia Sorento, is by leaps and bounds better than its first generation predecessor – you know, the one that looked like the Toyota Harrier….

And that is the sole reason for the curt opening paragraph of this review on Kia’s full size SUV. It’s a handsome looking one at that, and is one of Kia’s better designs so far. The Massive honeycomb grille and projector headlights lend the front fascia a sense of luxury that you would expect from more expensive European models.

At 4,780mm long and 1,890mm wide, this 7-seater is a behemoth to say the least, it dwarfs even mid size SUVs by a considerable margin, which might put some people off, especially if they are of the perception that it is difficult to manoeuvre and parallel park. The cabin is so capacious that you feel that you are in a different area code compared to the person sitting next you.

Harking back to the early days of the SUVs, they were built to take on anything that came your way, whether it was an off-road excursion, hauling heavy machinery, towing a caravan, you name it – these vehicles were meant for the tough stuff.

And as such, early SUVs were a handful to drive, the hydraulically powered steering wheel was heavy to operate, brakes lacked feel and were typically less responsive, and the 4-wheel-drive system was a bit cumbersome to operate. But the advent of modern electronics, soon negated those issues.

This leads me to my point, the Sorento is an absolute hoot to drive. Despite its daunting size, it’s as easy to drive and manoeuvre as is your regular run of the mill hatchback. The steering is light, the brake pedal is super responsive – overtly to an extent, and in typical Kia fashion, the layout of the switchgear placement are neat, tidy and within reach.

My main gripe with the interior is that there’s no LCD panel for the entertainment system, which is a major drawback considering that it has become standard equipment in much less expensive vehicles. And the front seats are manually operated as opposed to electric – which is a deal breaker for some.

Then there’s also the third row of seats, which are fine, but the cup holders panels on either side seem a bit cheap and do no do justice to the rather supple soft touch plastics up front.

The instrument cluster features a blend of analogue and digital displays that complement each other fairly well. And the hue and colour balance is spot on, regardless of the lighting conditions. Their controls are intuitive and the learning curve, isn’t that steep. Common sense is sufficient to figure everything out.

As for engines, there’s a 2.2-litre diesel variant, and two other variants that come with the same 2.4-litre petrol powerplant. But forget latter ones, the oil burner is the one to have. It has excellent power delivery especially from lower down the rev range and is able to make mince meat of hauling heavy cargo around town.

Despite its sheer heft, thanks to the engine’s 198bhp and 441Nm of torque, the acceleration is almost car-like. It has the ability to blitz anything less than a hot hatch between traffic lights – not that we condone such hooliganism. It’s a feat that is supposed to be inconceivable for something of its size. Rationally, a vehicle like the Sorento shouldn’t be capable of harassing sports car owners, but it can, and it will keep doing it all day without breaking a sweat.

And since it’s a diesel, the Sorento will be able to travel close to 1000km before needing a fill up, a little sooner, if you continually mash the throttle pedal. The 4WD system works exceptionally well, there’s no need to interfere – it never misbehaves.

Unlike most SUVs, the Sorento’s suspension is a bit on the stiffer side, which isn’t a bad thing because it provides you with a pliant ride regardless of your speed. It’s up to snuff at absorbing undulations without the eerie floating effect that more luxurious vehicles offer.

It’s a ‘love it or hate it’ thing, but you would be hard pressed to find something similar that has a setup this reassuring at high speeds.
As a whole its an absolute doddle to drive, even for the more petite of drivers. It looks and behaves just like a car – steering requires little effort to operate, the gear changes are buttery smooth albeit not lightning quick, and the brakes are able to bring this mammoth of a vehicle to a standstill with a minor prod of the brake pedal.

The electronic parking brake works with you instead of getting in your way. It knows when to disengage without you needing to do so. It’s unbelievable how far Kia has come in just a few years. It’s behaviour can be likened to that of an office’s most cooperative employee – you tend to forget his significance.

That said, the experience isn’t all unicorns and rainbows though, there are a few caveats that need mentioning, most prominent of which is the diesel clatter. Unless you own a Range Rover with an SDV8, anything south of that is going to sound very utilitarian. And the Sorento is no exception.

If you are the type who wants something docile and uneventful, you will need to look elsewhere. But for those who want a rugged outdoors vehicle that has the muscle to handle any task, whether it be on or off-road – this is what you need.

It’s also a looker, which means it will blend in with more expensive vehicles at the valet lot of a black tie event. And it’s got automatic headlights, wipers, DRLs as well as other more sophisticated electronic gizmos, so it won’t feel out of place parked next to a Land Rover Discovery.

My take on the Sorento is simple, it’s a marked improvement over its predecessor both in styling and overall usability – This is one Sorento I wouldn’t mind calling my own.
