2018 was the fifth consecutive record year for Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM). The distinctive three-pointed star shined brightly in 2018 with an extraordinary performance of 13,079 vehicles sold, translating into a 9% overall growth. Capturing a 2.4 per cent market share*, the achievement cements Mercedes-Benz as the undisputed luxury lifestyle brand in Malaysia and the global arena.

MBM President and CEO, Dr Claus Weidner (below, left) said: “2018 was another successful year in the 15 year-long extraordinary journey for Mercedes-Benz Malaysia and the Mercedes-Benz brand. Our efforts to invigorate the brand experience for our increasingly diverse fans have been fruitful and we are happy to retain our position as the number one luxury lifestyle brand. Commenting on the 2018 performance, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at MBM, Mark Raine (above, left) said, “We are extremely proud of our history-making performance for 2018. In 2018, MBM’s performance was spearheaded by the locally produced limousines, which recorded 7,910 units sold. Following closely were the Mercedes-Benz SUVs with 2,613 units sold, particularly by the locally produced Mercedes-Benz GLC 200 and GLC 250. The German marque expects continued positive demand for this segment.  The Mercedes-Benz compact cars recorded a total of 1,875 units sold, while the Mercedes-Benz Dream Cars, recorded a total of 662 units sold, a 77% growth for the three-pointed star’s brand shapers.

The 20 vehicle launches spread throughout 2018 sustained the healthy momentum of demand for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The key launches included the locally-assembled Mercedes-AMG C 43 and GLC 43, Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan and Mercedes-AMG E 53 Coupé, its New Dream Cars Collection, the New Mercedes-Benz S-Class Family, and the all-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class and new generation C-Class.

Additionally, MBM showcased the brand’s innovative edge with the EQ Concept premiere in Kuala Lumpur – a first in Southeast Asia. The milestone has positioned Mercedes-Benz as a reinventer of the automotive industry with the EQ brand, pioneering the direction and setting the stage for future mobility.

Going hand-in-hand with its Best Products, MBM spearheaded engaging activities to match a diverse fan base aligned to its overall Best Customer Experience commitment. MBM engaged with fans through events like Urban Hunting x ULTRA Singapore 2018, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Kuala Lumpur, the MercedesTrophy and introduction of the AMG Owners Club Malaysia (AOCM) which are aimed at elevating the AMG experience with exclusive access to all things AMG for owners.

Complementing the seamless ownership experience, Mercedes-Benz Services Malaysia (MBSM) recorded a steady growth in line with the three-pointed star’s progress. For the year, MBSM financed four out of every 10 Mercedes-Benz vehicles sold and has a solid servicing portfolio of MYR 2.7 billion** MBSM’s commitment to innovative peace-of-mind financing and insurance solutions was further embodied with the introduction of new products like AgilityPlus and Lease2Go.

MBM’s emphasis on upholding Best Customer Experience at every touchpoint translated into the highest Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) After-sales score in history. The achievement has demonstrated the brand’s excellence in managing the high volume of Mercedes-Benz vehicles by maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction.

The passion and expertise behind the Best Customer Experience brand promise was showcased once again in this year’s Mercedes-Benz SEA II Skills Competition. 2018 marked the competition’s 10th anniversary and first year opening its doors to the South East Asia II (SEAII) region. A total of 613 Customer Services Professionals and Advanced Modern Apprenticeship finalists competed for the title of best technician, service advisor and process specialist within the Mercedes-Benz network.

The celebrated technicians and customer services personnel make up the backbone of MBM’s 35 dedicated dealerships nationwide. In tandem with its growing fan base, MBM launched five new touchpoints last year including the NZ Wheels Klang Autohaus, Hap Seng Star Setia Alam Autohaus and Asbenz Stern Kuantan Autohaus among others. Trained with a view of keeping customers at the centre, every touch point is key in delivering the Best Products and Best Customer Service throughout the entire customer journey. To date, Mercedes-Benz has the largest premium dealer network in the country.

Recognising the dedication, passion and hard work of its dealer partners, MBM held the inaugural Dealer of the Year awards in March 2018. The award is poised to be an annual event aimed at rewarding dealerships for operational excellence and commitment to delivering the Best Customer Experience. Another exciting offering introduced in the network for 2018 was the Mercedes-Benz Certified pre-owned vehicle programme. The programme represents the highest quality in used cars from Mercedes-Benz worldwide, previously known as Proven Exclusivity.

Mercedes-Benz as a brand has invested over MYR 1 billion in the Malaysian market since 2003 and MBM’s production plant in Pekan, Pahang demonstrates its long-term position and consistent commitment to the Malaysian economy. In FY2018, the production plant produced 9,854 vehicles, including the newest addition being the Mercedes-Benz S 450 L and the Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC Facelift.

MBM’s long-term commitment is also demonstrated through the Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Training Academy built to develop the skills of Malaysia’s youth and create meaningful job opportunities in the automotive industry. 2018 saw an additional 26 apprentices graduated bringing the total to 853 globally certified local apprentices who have passed through its doors since the establishment of the training programme.

On its outlook for the year ahead, Dr Weidner said, “2019 will be another exciting year for Mercedes-Benz with refreshing innovations and new benchmarks to elevate the customer experience. We are excited to share these updates in due time.” Earlier this week, Daimler AG announced that on a global level Mercedes-Benz sold approximately 2.3 million cars worldwide in 2018, increasing its unit sales by 0.9 per cent, making 2018 the most successful year in terms of sales in the company’s history.

The new sales record in the car division of Daimler AG was driven in particular by the success of Mercedes-Benz in the Asia-Pacific region. Asia-Pacific was identified as the region with the strongest growth in 2018, delivering 943,473 (+7.8%) Mercedes-Benz cars to customers in 2018. Mercedes-Benz Malaysia was one of the few markets in the Asia Pacific region to have delivered more passenger cars than ever before in a single year.

The A 250 AMG Line, on the other hand, is equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine rated at 165 kW/224 hp with the 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission. Consistently placing customers at the centre of its activities, Malaysia’s leading luxury lifestyle brand dotted the past quarter with vibrant progress in its extensive network, product portfolio and talent development.

“In the third quarter of 2018, we enjoyed bringing a host of updates to excite our fans and customers in the premium market segment. In 3Q 2018, MBM continued to move closer to customers. Together with dealer partner, Asbenz Stern Sdn Bhd (Asbenz Stern), MBM launched the Asbenz Stern Kuantan Autohaus and Service Centre. Mercedes-Benz Malaysia delivered 10,143 vehicles in 3Q 2018, a 16 per cent increase compared to the same period last year; while a market share of 2.5 per cent in total for 3Q 2018 records an improvement of 0.2 per cent from 3Q 2017. Thus far this year, MBM’s locally-produced limousines namely the Mercedes-Benz C-, E-, and S-Class, collectively recorded a total of 6,344 units sold. MBM’s range of premium compact cars comprising the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, B-Class, GLA-Class and CLA-Class recorded 1,268 units sold. These two segments recorded increases of 21.1 per cent and four per cent respectively compared to the the third quarter of last year.

The premium SUV range by Mercedes-Benz remained a growth driver recording 1,960 units sold, which translated into a 3.4 per cent increase compared to Q3 2017. The eminent brand-shapers in the form of the Mercedes-Benz Dream Cars collection also recorded a notable achievement with 570 units sold, marking a 40 per cent increase compared to 3Q 2017.

Adding to its thrilling product portfolio, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia also launched the all-new Mercedes-Benz S-Class limousine, along with the S-Class cabriolet, S-Class Coupe, and Mercedes-Maybach S-Class in 3Q 2018. The unveiling showcased an exclusively diverse and holistic collection of Mercedes-Benz S-Class automobiles for fans in Malaysia.

Catering to Malaysia’s passionate performance drivers with the aspirational dream car collection, MBM celebrated its brand-shapers with the launch of the luxurious Dream Cars Collection for 2018. They comprised the all-new
Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Corporate Communications Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class Coupe, the Mercedes-AMG GT C and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet.

Offering exclusive experiences to complement the best products and services, MBM hosted a number of lifestyle activities for customers. The AMG Owners Club Malaysia (AOCM) is the latest initiative by MBM which brought together a group of owners passionate about the brand and motoring. The AOCM is poised to elevate the AMG experience with exclusive access to all things AMG for owners.

Upholding the Best Customer Experience pillar and showcasing unparalleled expertise in caring for every Mercedes-Benz vehicle, MBM held the 2018 Mercedes-Benz SEA II Skills Competition in 3Q 2018. This year marked the competition’s 10th anniversary and first year opening its doors to the South East Asia II (SEAII) region. Moving into its service performance for 3Q 2018, MBM’s dealer network registered a service volume of 109,927 from 31 service centers, an increase of 16 per cent over the previous year. Noting the higher volume of vehicles serviced, MBM continued to once again uphold the highest standards of Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) which are a benchmark in Southeast Asia.

Mercedes-Benz Services Malaysia (MBSM), the financing arm of MBM, continued its growth trajectory in Q3 of 2018 maintaining a serviced portfolio of over RM2.5 billion, and continues to finance four out of 10 Mercedes-Benz cars sold in Malaysia. Enhancing the current service standard of finance and insurance products, customer car loan decisions at MBSM can now be undertaken in seconds through the implementation of a newly automated underwriting process for loan applications upon receipt of a complete set of required documents. Within one month of introduction of this service, MBSM was processing 15 per cent of applications via this efficient and convenient method.

To diversify its funding sources in anticipation of further growth prospects in the local market, MBSM recently issued a RM 3 billion corporate bond programme in Malaysia. MBSM received a credit rating of AAA by the independent credit rating agency RAM and its first issuance of RM 250 million of the bond program has been comprehensively taken up by local investors.

“Mercedes-Benz Malaysia was established more than 15 years ago. With more than RM1 billion invested as a Mercedes-Benz brand to-date, our key focus has been and remains taking a holistic approach to automotive excellence and customer experiences with a customer centric strategy,” concluded Dr Weidner.

With an investment of RM41.6 million, this new pre-owned centre reflects the combined efforts of both principal and authorised dealer to provide customers with more options and thus forging an even greater connection to a wider customer audience for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. With a built-up area of 46,210 sq ft, the Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned Centre by Hap Seng Star Kinrara is able to display over 100 showroom vehicles, which makes it the biggest pre-owned centre and is managed by 24 personnel to deliver a complete one-stop solution in sales and financial services exclusively for Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-owned vehicles. The facility is equipped with a lifestyle café, children’s playground and Mercedes-Benz lifestyle products are also available for purchase.

Commenting on the launch, Hap Seng Consolidated Berhad Group Chief Operating Officer and Hap Seng Star Chief Executive, Mr Harald Behrend, said, “It gives us great pleasure to launch this standalone Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-owned centre in Malaysia. Following the introduction of the new Sales and Services Tax (SST), Mercedes-Benz Malaysia announces today that effective September 1, 2018, prices of all Mercedes-Benz premium automobiles are adjusted according to the government’s enactment of SST. Simultaneously, Mercedes-Benz is also pleased to share several product upgrades that are applied to the best-selling SUV namely, the GLC 200 and GLC 250 4MATIC, which are now equipped with Blind Spot Assist. Mercedes-Benz Services Malaysia Sdn Bhd (MBSM) recently celebrated its 5th anniversary. Starting from ground-up to a portfolio of RM2.2 billion in just five years and financing and insuring four out of every ten Mercedes-Benz cars sold; MBSM is raring to go in 2018.

MBSM was first established in 2012, entering the Malaysian market at an opportune time to support its sister company, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM), with innovative automotive financing packages. In 2012 and 2013 MBSM focused on setting up the business, studying the needs of the market in order to begin catering to the aspirations of Mercedes-Benz customers.

After establishing its operations, MBSM progressed into building greater awareness of its role in the Mercedes-Benz customer journey throughout 2014 and 2015. This included retail and corporate customers in the passenger car category as well as customers from the Commercial Vehicles division.
