It was just a year ago that Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP) introduced Porsche’s first all-electric sportscar, the Taycan, and now comes a variant, the Taycan Cross Turismo. As the ‘cross’ in the name suggests, this is a SUV although Porsche calls it a Cross Utility Vehicle (CUV).

Design elements for the off-road image
With ‘utility’ in its function, the Taycan Cross Turismo has design elements that emphasise an off-road image. These include wheelarch trim, unique front and rear lower aprons, and side sills. Customers can also add the optional Off-road Design package which comes with special flaps at the corners of the front and rear bumpers and at the ends of the sills. These not only enhance the appearance but also help to give added protection from stone impacts.

Like the Taycan, the Taycan Cross Turismo rides on a high-tech chassis and all variants have all-wheel drive (AWD) as well as adaptive air suspension. Its off-road capability is enabled by higher ground clearance compared to the Taycan. With the Off-road Design package, ground clearance is increased by up to 30 mm.

Extra mode for off-road use
When driving over loose ground – with no emissions to spoil the environment – the driver can activate the new ‘Gravel’ mode exclusive to the Cross Turismo. This new feature manages torque distribution through traction-optimised shifting and other chassis settings, increasing grip and stability on surfaces with poor quality.

Inside, there’s 47 mm more headroom for rear passengers and more than 1,200 litres of load capacity (with rear seatbacks folded down). The large, automatically-opening tailgate makes loading and unloading easy.

Different output levels for each variant
All variants have the Performance Battery Plus, which has a total capacity of 93.4 kWh, but the output varies depending on the variant. The Taycan 4 Cross Turismo’s powertrain generates 280 kW (380 ps), with overboost power for Launch Control pushing it to 350 kW (476 ps). The Taycan 4S Cross Turismo has 360 kW (490 ps), with overboost power with Launch Control of 420 kW (571 ps), while the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo produces 460 kW (625 ps), and overboost power with Launch Control of 500 kW (680 ps).

Porsche Taycan Driven by Karamjit Singh – Behind The Scenes Story

Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur (PEM) , a department within the sportscar company, offers services to personalise and create exclusive versions of the various Porsche models. Being part of the company, it has access to all the engineering information as well as the expertise and technology to customise cars individually. From the first custom Porsche 356 in 1950 to the numerous models in today’s range, PEM can make subtle changes or extensive modifications as required by customers.

The 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition is one of the special models developed by PEM. Based on the new 992 generation 911 Targa, it has design elements influenced by the 1950s and 1960s. Many of the elements, inside and outside, have been reinterpreted and combined with the latest technology by PEM.

Classic colours and graphics
The Cherry Metallic exterior colour exclusive to the 911 series brings to mind the style of the 1950s in a modern interpretation. Alternatively, two solid colours (Black and Guards Red), a metallic colour (GT Silver Metallic) and a special colour (Crayon) are also available. There are also other colour choices for those who want something that is more unique.

A striking design feature is the ‘Spears’ motorsport graphic on the front wings which are high-quality white livery elements in the shape of a spear. These ‘spears’ recall the early days of Porsche motorsports history, when the racing cars were painted after collisions to hide any marks. Later, the spears were used as a kind of ‘warpaint’ and became one of the first design elements customers used to personalise their vehicles.

There are also motorsport graphics with a historical design on the sides of this special model, conveying a high level of recognition of the 911 Speedster Heritage Design package of 2019. The sporty look can be supplemented by race numbers from 0 to 99 on request.

There’s also gold-coloured lettering at the rear and on the Targa bar, as well as the historic Porsche crest on the wheel hub cover and the bonnet. The Heritage Design Edition comes with 911 Carrera Exclusive Design wheels in high-gloss black (or, optionally, in platinum satin gloss) in 20-inch or 21-inch sizes and black-painted brake calipers with the classic look. Other design features include the Porsche Heritage badge on the luggage compartment grille and silver sports tailpipes.

The 20-inch and 21-inch wheels are designed in the shape of a wing, or cloverleaf, and are reminiscent of the legendary Fuchs wheels that were first used on the 1967 911 S.

Corduroy comeback inside
The snug cabin has brushed aluminium panels bearing the words ‘911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition’ with Heritage Design floor mats as a matching detail. The Bordeaux Red 2-tone leather upholstery and Atacama Beige OLEA club leather (black is also available) were designed exclusively for this edition. Customers can also choose two-tone leather upholstery in Black and Atacama Beige.

Corduroy, a fabric already used in the 356 model, makes a comeback and brings the fashion style of the 1950s back to life. This soft ribbed fabric is used on the centre panels of the seats and in the door panels. The interior appointments are rounded off with perforated Alcantara in Atacama Beige on the headlining and the pillars.

Historical bonds of instruments
The instrument panel with 2 high-resolution 7-inch displays creates historical bonds in various ways. One is the classic pointer on the analogue tachometer. When the engine is started, the colour of the hands and digits changes from white to green. The equally green scale lines are derived from the 356. The clock from the standard Sport Chrono package on top of the instrument panel also has green digits.

Each owner gets the car key painted in the exterior colour and a key pouch made of 2-tone leather, also enhanced with the historical Porsche crest. The leather document folder and the specially designed indoor car cover underline the vehicle’s aim of being a true collector’s item.

Same powertrain as latest 911 Targa
The powertrain, chassis, and driver assistance systems are similar to that found with the latest new 992 generation 911 Targa. It is powered by a 2981 cc 450 ps/630 Nm biturbo 6-cylinder boxer engine which, with the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, can propel the 911 Targa (with Launch Control) from 0 – 100 km/h in less than 3.6 seconds on its way to a top speed of 304 km/h, it is claimed.

The 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition is now available from Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP). With the sales tax exemption (till the end of 2021), it is priced from RM1,677,409 (excluding insurance).

Porsche takes personalisation services to a new level

The updated Porsche Panamera is now available from Sime Darby Auto Performance, with pricing for starting from RM 1,026,735, excluding insurance but with 50% sales tax exemption (until June 30, 2021).

For 2021, the new Panamera feature the previously optional Sport Design front end with striking air intake grilles, larger side air intakes with adapted single-bar front light layout. The appearance of the rear end has a revamped light strip that extends the full width of the luggage compartment lid with an adapted contour. It thus provides a continuous and flowing connection between the two newly designed LED light clusters.

Technical updates
The chassis and control systems have been geared towards a sporty and also comfortable character for 2021. Some systems have even been applied completely from scratch. In order to transfer the enormous power to the road in a controlled manner and maximise cornering performance, the revamped Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system with optimisation, while the control of the electric roll stabilisation system Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport (PDCC Sport) improves body stability. This is achieved while also providing a noticeable improvement in damping comfort.

Six-piston aluminium monobloc fixed brake calipers are fitted at the front, with four-piston aluminium monobloc fixed brake calipers at the rear, and single-piece brake calipers enclosed. The brake system in the latest Panamera has reduced weight but is highly resistant to deformation. The engineers have set the pedal travel to be tight with the pressure point precise so the driver can modulate deceleration efficiently.

An improved tyre generation is fitted, increasing the bandwidth between comfort and sportiness while simultaneously offering a lower rolling resistance. Sport tyres with a softer rubber compound and optimised tread have been developed especially for the Panamera and are offered for the first time, further improving lateral performance and are particularly suitable for sporty cornering.

Three new 20-inch and 21-inch wheels have been added to the wheel range, so that a total of 10 different designs are now available, including the Exclusive Design 21-inch alloy wheels.

The Panamera is powered by the familiar 2.9 litre V6 biturbo engine which generates 330 ps/450 Nm to provide a claimed 0 to 100 km/h capability of 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 270 km/h. The coasting function of the 8-speed PDK (activated in normal driving mode and already part of predecessor models) is also improved to enhance fuel efficiency.

Sporty ambience within
As in every Porsche, there is a sporty ambience inside the car in keeping with the Porsche design DNA. A new multifunction steering wheel is among the updates, with operating elements cleverly integrated into the design. The visual cut-outs bringing to mind the lightweight steering wheels found in racing cars.

Porsche to assemble in Malaysia for regional market?

For more than 4 decades, the Porsche Turbo has been the top of the company’s range, offering superlative performance and optimum driving dynamics. The latest generation 911 Turbo S is now officially available from Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP), priced from RM2,235,463 (with 50% exemption of sales tax until June 30, 2021).

New 6-cylinder boxer engine
The latest model has a new 3.8-litre 6-cylinder boxer engine with two VTG turbochargers, and delivers 650 ps/800 Nm. Based on the 911 Carrera engine generation, it features a completely redesigned air-cooling system; new, larger turbochargers in a symmetrical layout with electrically adjustable wastegate flaps, as well as the use of piezo injectors, which have significantly improved the vehicle’s characteristics with regard to responsiveness, power, torque, emissions and revving ability.

With 8 gears in the PDK optimised for the turbocharged engine, the 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time is said to be two-tenths of seconds quicker than before but the top speed is still 330 km/h. Thanks to the enhanced Porsche Traction Management all-wheel drive system, the transfer case can distribute significantly more torque, with up to 500 Nm being transferred to the front wheels.

Modified track widths, further developed aerodynamics and new mixed-sized tyres contribute to the agility and sportiness of the new 911 Turbo S. The track is now 42 mm wider at the front axle and 10 mm wider at the rear axle.

The body dimensions have also been increased significantly in line with the enhanced driving dynamics, with an added 45 mm above the front axle (1840 mm) and an increase of 20 mm in overall width above the rear axle (1900 mm).

Adaptive aerodynamics
Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) adapts the aerodynamic characteristics even more precisely to the driving situation, speed and selected driving mode. This resolves the age-old aerodynamic configuration dilemma: the contradiction between a low drag coefficient for maximum speed and low consumption, and high downforce for better driving dynamics.

The comprehensive expansion of PAA makes it possible to achieve a much larger spread between the aerodynamic configurations for optimum driving dynamics and minimum drag. The adaptive aerodynamics now include controlled cooling air flaps at the front and a larger rear wing for even more downforce.

The active cooling flaps, together with the variable front spoiler lip as well as the larger extending and tilting rear wing which delivers 15% more downforce, offers 3 active aerodynamic components, depending on the speed and driving mode. In the newly available Eco configuration, the rear wing is retracted over a large speed range so that the vehicle can be driven with minimum drag.

Wet Mode
Also new is a ‘Wet mode’ which enhances driving stability in wet conditions. The extended but not yet tilted rear wing combined with the completely retracted front spoiler lip shifts the aerodynamic balance towards the rear axle when the Wet mode is activated. This results in a higher rear-end and driving stability for greater safety on wet road surfaces.

In the event of full braking at high speed, the new airbrake function will be activated automatically. The front spoiler and rear wing are moved to the Performance position for higher drag and increased downforce to reduce the braking distance and improve driving stability during braking.

For the first time, the 911 Turbo S is factory-fitted with mixed tyres in two different sizes: 20-inch tyres with unique 255/35 dimensions at the front, and 21-inch 315/30 tyres at the rear.

High quality sporty finish
The interior has a high-quality and sporty finish. Standard equipment includes a full leather interior and carbonfibre trim in combination with Light Silver accents. The 18-way adjustable sports seats have stitching that pays homage to the first 911 Turbo (type 930). High quality graphic elements and logos in the instrument cluster complete the characteristic Turbo S features.

The centre screen of the PCM is now 10.9 inches and can be operated quickly without distraction, thanks to its new layout with significantly reduced number of controls. Other features on board are the GT sports steering wheel, the Sport Chrono package with newly integrated Porsche Track Precision app and BOSE Surround Sound system.

Porsche is steadily expanding its all-electric Taycan range with a fourth variant that has rear-wheel drive. It is called just Taycan, no suffix, which reflects it entry-level position in the range which has the Taycan Turbo S, Taycan Turbo and Taycan 4S. Sime Darby Auto Performance will have the model in Malaysian showrooms from March this year and is pricing it from RM584,561 with sales tax until June 30, 2021.

As the youngest member of the family, the Taycan comes with the new features introduced in the other versions at the model year changeover. As on the other variants, optional equipment includes a colour head-up display and an on-board charger with a charging capacity of up to 22 kW.

Two battery pack choices
Two battery pack sizes are available: the standard Performance Battery and the optional Performance Battery Plus. The new entry-level model delivers up to 300 kW (408 ps) in ‘overboost’ mode with Launch Control; this increases to an output of up to 350 kW (476 ps) with the optional battery pack. Nominal power is 240 kW (326 ps) or 280 kW (380 ps), respectively. The range with the standard battery pack is claimed to be up to 431 kms, while the more powerful pack will extend it to 484 kms.

Maximum charging capacity is up to 225 kW (Performance Battery) or up to 270 kW (Performance Battery Plus). This means that both batteries can be charged from 5% to 80% in 22.5 minutes and that power for a further 100 kilometres is achieved after only 5 minutes. Just as with the other variants, the Taycan has intelligent charging management.

The Taycan can accelerate from a standing start to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, it is claimed, and having the more powerful battery pack makes no difference to acceleration time nor top speed which is said to be 230 km/h.

In addition to the electric  motor on the rear axle, the drive architecture also includes a 2-speed transmission. With a Cd value from 0.22, its aerodynamics make a significant contribution to its low energy consumption, contributing to long range.

Incidentally, this new rear-wheel drive Taycan also holds the Guinness World Record for the longest drift with an electric car, having been driven sideways non-stop for exactly 42.171 kms. You can read about it here.

Purist exterior design, Porsche DNA
With its purist design, the Taycan signals the beginning of a new era. At the same time, it retains the unmistakable Porsche design DNA. From the front, the electric sportscar looks particularly low and wide, with highly contoured wings. Its silhouette is shaped by its sporty roof line sloping downward to the rear, while its highly sculpted side sections are also characteristic. These features are complemented by innovative elements such as the glass-look lettering for the Porsche logo in the rear light bar.

Distinguishing features of the Taycan within its model family include aerodynamically optimised 19-inch Taycan Aero wheels and black anodised brake callipers. The front apron, side sills and rear diffuser in black are the same as those on the Taycan 4S. LED headlights are fitted as standard.

Unique interior design
The cockpit of the Taycan unique with its clear structure and completely new architecture. The free-standing curved instrument cluster forms the highest point on the dashboard. This places a clear focus on the driver axis. Other elements include a central 10.9-inch infotainment display and an optional display for the front passenger.

The Taycan is the first Porsche model available with an entirely leather-free interior. Interiors made from innovative recycled materials underscore the sustainable concept of the electric sports car.

As standard, the Taycan comes with a partial leather interior as well as front comfort seats with 8-way electrical adjustment. There are two luggage compartments – 84 litres at the front, and up to 407 litres at the rear.

Adaptive air suspension
The adaptive air suspension is equipped with a Smartlift function which allows the car to be programmed so that it raises its ride height automatically at certain recurring locations such as road humps or garage driveways. The Smartlift function can also actively influence the height on motorway journeys and can adjust this height for the best possible balance between efficiency and driving comfort.

6-piston aluminium monobloc fixed-calliper brakes at the front and 4-piston aluminium monobloc fixed-calliper brakes at the rear are standard. The brake callipers have a black anodised finish. Customers can also choose an optional high-performance Porsche Surface Coated Brake.

Over 20,000 sold worldwide
Porsche has delivered just over 20,000 Taycans to customers worldwide in 2020. In Norway, the Taycan currently accounts for 70% of all Porsche models sold, and start of November saw the 1,000th unit being delivered in that market.

All-electric Porsche Taycan debuts in Malaysia with pricetag starting from RM725,000

Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP) has enhanced its Porsche Cayenne offering with a new Premium Package which provides additional options as standard. These include options that enhance performance and also comfort and motoring enjoyment.

On the technical side is air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management for dynamic handling and driving comfort as well as 21-inch RS Spyder wheels. The driver will also be able to get the car into a parking bay more easily with ParkAssist with Surround View.

The powertrain available for the Malaysian market is the 3-litre turbocharged V6 engine with a twin-scroll turbocharger. The 340 ps/450 Nm output is delivered to the wheels through an 8-speed Tiptronic S transmission.

Inside, the enhancements now include 4-zone climate control and a BOSE  Surround Sound System. The high-powered 710W audio system comes with 14 speakers, including a separate subwoofer, and uses BOSE SoundTrue Enhancement Technology to enhance the quality of sound reproduction.

Sime Darby Auto Performance opens largest 3S Porsche Centre in Asia-Pacific

With an investment of over RM15 million, Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP), the authorised importer of Porsche vehicles and parts in Malaysia, has built the largest 3S Porsche Centre within a single facility in the Porsche Asia-Pacific region. Officially opened recently, the flagship facility known as Porsche Centre Ara Damansara is the third brand new dealership facility established by SDAP in its 10 years representing the brand in this country.

The Porsche Centre Ara Damansara occupies a cumulative built-up area of 12,102 square metres which includes 8,000 square metres of working space across 5 levels, with two showroom floors, two service and workshop levels and the importer office.

High-performance chargers
To prepare for the new era of electromobility, SDAP has installed Direct Current (DC) high-performance chargers for customers at all Porsche Centres. These 175 kW chargers are currently the fastest in the country and can fully charge the battery pack of the new Taycan within 36 minutes under optimal conditions.

Owners of the new Taycan all-electric sportscar will be able to get their cars charged within 36 minutes using the high-performance chargers at the facility.

Electrically-powered cars have been in the news more and more in recent years but they have actually been around since the 1800s. In fact, between 1900 and 1912, a third of all vehicles on US roads were powered by electricity, However, when the internal combustion engine (ICE) improved in reliability and performance, electric cars were pushed into extinction as their performance stagnated. After the 1930s, there was little interest in such cars.

It would not be until the 21st century began that pure electric cars would make a comeback, although the hybrid powertrain which used an electric motor with an ICE debuted just as the 20th century was ending. The electrification of cars got underway and this decade will see a surge of models appearing as a number of companies have them in final stages of development.

The early electric cars have had limited performance which raised the question of whether one of the elements of driving pleasure – high performance – would eventually be lost. Hybrid technology advanced a lot and showed that it was possible to have electrification and high performance – but that still included a ICE. What about a pure electric propulsion system?

With the new Taycan, launched today in Malaysia by Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP) , Porsche shows that high performance need not be lost just because of electrification. Just as its engineers made sure that when the company introduced its first SUV, it would still have the dynamics of a sportscar and the character of a Porsche, they also made sure that the brand’s first all-electric car would do justice to the name ‘Porsche’.

Actually, an electrified car is not entirely new to Porsche and with much attention given to the pioneering Toyota Prius hybrid, and Nissan LEAF and Tesla electric cars, the company reminded the world that Dr. Ferdinand Porsche designed what can be considered the world’s first hybrid powerplant for a car back in the late 1890s. And it was even produced until 1915 although only a small number of cars were actually sold.

Advanced battery technology
100 years later, automotive technology has of course progressed greatly, along with the technologies more specific to electric cars, such as battery technology. Porsche has stayed at the forefront of the technological envelope and used the latest hardware for the Taycan which began as the Mission E concept 5 years ago.

For example, the Taycan is the first production electric vehicle with a system voltage of 800 volts, instead of the usual 400 volts. This is a particular advantage for owners while on the move as full recharging of the lithium-ion battery pack can be done in just over 36 minutes. However, this requires a 175 kW direct current (DC) charger.

Recharging port is behind a flap on the front fender.

The overall capacity of the Performance Battery Plus is 93.4 kWh and can conduct higher currents, thus speeding up the charging process significantly. Taycan drivers can also charge their cars with up to 11 kW of alternating current (AC) at home using the Porsche Mobile Charger Plus kit. The car can also be recharged at public charging stations, some of which do have the DC facility.

Those who are close enough to a Porsche Centre in Malaysia can get free use of the DC chargers installed at each location. During the charging time of around half an hour, the owner can enjoy a cup of coffee at the lounge or even do some work.

Porsche performance levels
Energy from the battery pack, located under the middle of the car, powers the electric motors which can generate up to 560 kW (761 ps) overboost power in combination with Launch Control in the flagship Taycan Turbo S, and up to 500 kW (680 ps) in the Taycan Turbo. If you wonder why ‘Turbo’ is used when there is no turbocharger, it’s just Porsche’s way of providing a sort of reference point to the relative performance levels of the models.

There’s also a third model – the Taycan 4S – which has a standard Performance Battery. This gives a performance level of up to 390 kW (530 ps) via overboost power in conjunction with Launch Control. It can be increased to a maximum of 420 kW (571 ps) with the optional Performance Battery Plus.

2021 Porsche Taycan

As would be expected, the performance numbers reflect the high torque characteristic that electric motors generate from almost standstill. The Taycan Turbo S, with 1,050 Nm of torque will go from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 2.8 seconds while the Taycan Turbo, with 850 Nm, does the same run in 3.2 seconds. The Taycan 4S is no slowpoke either and will still do 0 to 100 km/h within 4 seconds and get up to 250 km/h.

The profile of the driving modes essentially follows the same philosophy as in other Porsche models. This is supplemented by special settings which enable optimum use of the electric drive. Sport Plus and Individual modes are part of the Sport Chrono Package, which comes as standard on the Taycan Turbo S.

So in as far as straightline performance is concerned, these Porsches can provide the same adrenalin rush as their ICE brothers. However, the feeling won’t be the same with the electric motors being smoother as there isn’t that distant reverberation from reciprocating pistons that can be discerned through the steering wheel and pedals.

Perhaps Porsche engineers are working on creating some sort of ‘classic feel’ but for now, there is the Porsche Electric Sport Sound. This is basically a sound clip that comes on during acceleration, adding a sense of ‘drama’ in spite of the electric whine. In some markets, it’s an optional feature but SDAP has specified it as standard for all the Taycan models.

How far can you go?
What about range? This is something that is on the minds of most people who consider an electric car because you can’t just pull into a station to get extra volts when you need them. The recharging network is growing but nowhere close in coverage to the petrol station network which is the product of over 100 years.

Just like the ICE Porsches, the more powerful the car, the less range it will have (and how the car is driven is still a factor). In this case, the range is dependent on the capacity of the battery pack. The 79.2-kWh battery pack of the Taycan 4S can last for a claimed range of 408 kms and if the owner installs the Performance Battery Plus upgrade with about 18% more capacity, the range can be extended another 55 kms. The more expensive Taycan Turbo and Turbo S come with the 93.4-kWh battery pack and for the former, the range is claimed to be up to 452 kms while for the latter, it’s between 390 and 416 kms.

While the ICE is non-existent, there are still many elements of the Taycan which are still ‘conventional’ and familiar. Around the chassis, there’s still adaptive air suspension with 3-chamber air springs and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). The double wishbone front axle and multi-link rear axle are of aluminium and at each wheel are Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake discs.

Futuristic look but still familiar
While Toyota sought to make an impact with a ‘futuristic look’ for the world’s first mass-produced hybrid car, Porsche’s designers have given their first all-electric model a blend of a familiar form with some advanced styling elements. We were already given a preview with the Mission E concept in 2015 and many of the ideas of designer Mitja Borkert have been retained.

The traditional Porsche form (with a Cd of 0.25) is evident, with the Panamera coming to mind. The LED matrix headlights which form a visual unit with the air curtains, provide a futuristic touch. The 4-point daytime running lights that are typical of the brand are flatter and wider than any other Porsche.

The lighting technology includes PDLS Plus where the matrix deactivates segments of the permanent high beam cone in a targeted way. 84 individually controlled LEDs can be adjusted as required by switching off or being dimmed so specific areas ahead can be fully illuminated.

Look of 1963 – as well as tomorrow
As with the exterior, the designers also gave the interior a familiar look and feel. They even looked to the original 911 from 1963 for inspiration when designing the dashboard. The freestanding 16.9-inch curved instrument cluster forms the highest point on the dashboard while a central, 10.9-inch infotainment display and an optional passenger display are combined to form an integrated glass band in a black-panel look and provides the ‘look of tomorrow’.

All user interfaces have been completely re-designed for the Taycan. The number of traditional hardware controls, such as switches and buttons, have been greatly reduced. Instead, control is intelligent and intuitive – via touch operation or voice control.

Sustainability is a big thing in manufacturing today and the sustainable concept of the electric sports car is promoted by offering an entire leather-free interior standard for the Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo (option for the Taycan 4S). The upholstery uses Race-Tex microfibre, a textile partly made from recycled polyester fibres while the flooring is of Econyl recycled fibre, made from recycled fishing nets.

As safe as any Porsche
Needless to say, all the active safety systems are provided and there are up to 8 airbags around the cabin to cushion the occupants from serious injuries. The Taycan has already been tested by EuroNCAP which gave it a maximum score of 5 stars. While the lightweight bodywork structure is conventional in one sense, it has also had to take into consideration the presence of the high-voltage battery pack which is cleverly integrated into the bodyshell structure.

The crash sensors of the Taycan were developed to meet the specific requirements of electric vehicles. Additional sensors are therefore used to reliably disconnect high-voltage equipment in the event of a crash. Also in the event of an accident where the airbag is deployed, the battery connection to the vehicle is disconnected as a precaution so that no voltage is live.

First deliveries in 2021
Prices for the Taycan start from RM725,000 for the Taycan 4S, RM999,000 for the Taycan Turbo, and RM1,195,000 for the Taycan Turbo S – all with applicable taxes but without insurance. Unfortunately, you will have to pay the full sales tax as the first deliveries can only start from the first quarter of 2021, after the expiry of the exemption period.

Four years into its product cycle, the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder share a technical base for the first time. This only model line from the sportscar maker that has a mid-engine layout and comes with a naturally aspirated flat-six engine as well as a 6-speed manual transmission that enthusiasts love. The  prices of the new 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder start from RM999,000 and RM970,000, respectively.

Featuring a completely redesigned 4-litre 6-cylinder boxer engine based on the same turbocharged  engine family in the 911 Carrera series, these new members of the 718 family have a significant increase in power compared to its predecessors – 35 bhp and 45 bhp more for the 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder, respectively. With a maximum torque of 420 Nm between 5000 and 6800 rpm, the cars can accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds from a standing still, with top speeds that beyond 300 km/h, it is claimed.

New additions include as adaptive cylinder control. In part-load operation, it temporarily interrupts the injection process in one of the two cylinder banks, thus reducing fuel consumption. For the first time ever in a high-revving engine, piezo injectors are used for direct fuel injection. Each injection process is split into 5 individual injections to support a complete combustion process, making it emissions-friendly. A variable intake system with two resonance valves ensures optimum gas exchange in the cylinders.

The bodywork has been ‘tuned’ to produce up to 50% more downforce. Sometimes more downforce can create additional drag, but this is said to not be the case with the Cayman GT4. The comprehensively improved aerodynamics concept benefits enormously from the newly designed single-chamber arch rear silencer. This creates space in the rear section for a functional diffuser, which accounts for a good 30% of the downforce at the rear axle.

The front section, which is optimised in the GT style, maintains the aerodynamic balance with a large front spoiler lip and so-called air curtains. The fixed rear wing also generates about 20% more downforce compared with its predecessor. This corresponds to an additional downforce of 12 kgs –  for a total of around 70 kgs – at 200 km/h.

The 718 Spyder
The new 718 Spyder is offer topless motoring but without the disadvantages that not having a roof causes. In fact, with the latest aerodynamic tuning, the 718 Spyder slips through the air more efficiently as well as generating more downforce. At the front, the new honeycomb air intake grilles have been designed to increase airflow by reducing obstructions.

The distinctive front spoiler lip with recessed ‘Spyder’ lettering and the central air intake in the front end directs the air upwards through the air outlet opening in front of the front lid to assist in reducing lift at the front axle.

This is further complemented by the golf-ball like profiled surface below the front end to maintain a constantly low drag coefficient. Unlike the GT4, the 718 Spyder possesses a distinctive rear spoiler that automatically extends at speeds over 120 km/h, which helps to reduce lift for more driving stability. Thanks to the functional diffuser, it is the first model in the Boxster family to generate aerodynamic downforce at the rear axle.

High-performance GT chassis
For the first time ever, the 718 Spyder rides on the same GT chassis as the 718 Cayman GT4. An ideal foundation for maximum performance, its further refined lightweight spring-strut front and rear axles make use of racing technologies.

The direct connection to the chassis is partially by means of ball joints ensuring a firm connection of the chassis to the body, resulting in precise, sharper and direct driving behaviour. The height, camber, toe angle and the anti-roll bars of the chassis for the Cayman GT4 can be adjusted to the demands of each individual racetrack.

The Porsche Active Suspension Management damping system with sports set-up and 30 mm suspension as standard, brings the centre of gravity of these models significantly closer to the ground and improves lateral dynamics.

The Porsche Stability Management system now operates with even greater sensitivity and precision. A skilled driver can optionally deactivate it for sportier handling. Also present is Porsche Torque Vectoring with a mechanical rear differential lock that enhances the longitudinal and lateral dynamics, enabling a driver to take corners more confidently.

The latest 718 Spyder runs on ultra-high-performance tyres specially adapted by Porsche. These road-approved sports tyres are complemented by a high-performance brake system that is suitable for track driving. The large aluminium monobloc fixed-caliper brakes are internally ventilated and perforated for optimum cooling. For those who want the ultimate in stopping (or deceleration) performance, there is the optionally-available Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake system.

And finally, the new sports exhaust system with two separated black tailpipes. This has even more powerful sportscar sound which is available with the press of a button.

Performance-oriented interior design
The sportiness of the exterior is mirrored in the cabin with the familiar Porsche cues visible all around. The instrument cluster has an analogue tachometer in the centre, emphasising the racing heritage of Porsches. Decorative trims in brushed aluminium and decorative stitching provide visual  contrasts whilst the puristic door-pull loops are a classic touch.

Optional packages available
The 718 Cayman GT4 can be equipped with the optional Clubsport package. With its components derived from professional motorsport, the Clubsport package provides additional protection on the racetrack. This includes a rear steel roll bar, a hand-held fire extinguisher and a 6-point seatbelt on the driver’s side.

The optional Spyder Classic interior package lends an extravagant look to the interior while also being reminiscent of historic racing cars. The two-tone leather interior in Bordeaux Red/Black gives an especially unique and high quality look and feel to the entire interior of the 718 Spyder.
