Richard Mille and Ferrari have joined forces to create a remarkable ultra-thin watch – the RM UP-01 Ferrari. This watch not only embodies a blend of their best expertise but also aligns with the values shared by both iconic brands.

The RM UP-01 Ferrari combines elegant design with sporting mechanisms, defying contemporary trends to establish new aesthetic codes. The watch is a testament to their partnership, and its technical prowess is particularly impressive.

At a mere 1.75 millimetres thick, the RM UP-01 Ferrari is an impressive technological feat, showcasing a fresh approach to watch mechanics where technicality governs aesthetics. Over six thousand hours of development and laboratory testing went into its creation, resulting in a timepiece that breaks traditional conventions.

To create this ultra-flat watch, a traditional movement with superimposed gears and hands was not an option. Instead, a close relationship between the movement and case was established to ensure both delivered the required rigidity. The baseplate and bridges are crafted from grade 5 titanium, a biocompatible, highly corrosion-resistant, and rigid alloy. These qualities make it a common material in industries like aerospace, aeronautics, and automotive.

The RM UP-01 Ultraflat features a new escapement and balance wheel in grade 5 titanium that significantly reduces the calibre’s thickness while maintaining security. This patented ultra-flat escapement does away with traditional dart and safety roller components, streamlining the design and reducing its height.

The two crowns integrated into the bezel offer winding (W) and hand-setting (H) functions, while two black ceramic inserts protect the bezel and ensure water resistance.

The RM UP-01 Ferrari is a limited edition with only 150 pieces available, each priced at $1.88 million.

Casio is releasing three new EDIFICE high-performance metal chronographs – the EQB-1000AT, ECB-10AT and EFS-S590 – which are made with 6K carbon . The new watches were designed with the Scuderia AlphaTauri F1 team which has had Casio as a partner since 2016 (when the team was known as Scuderia Toro Rosso).

6K carbon is a material woven from bundles of 6,000 carbonfibres, the same sort of lightweight but strong material used in Formula 1 cars. Carbonfibre is 5 times stronger than steel and one-third its weight, making it ideal for applications where weight needs to be kept low without compromising strength. Areas on the racing cars include the wings and floors.

The new EQB-1000AT, ECB-10AT and EFS-S590 mark the second collaboration with the team. The dial and bezel of the EQB-1000AT, the dial of the ECB-10AT, and the inner ring around the dial of the EFS-S590AT are made of 6K carbonfibre. The team’s navy-blue colour sets the overall tone, and their logo is engraved on the dials, case backs, and band loops.

For the Malaysian market, the model versions available are the EQB-1100AT and ECB-20AT, priced at RM2,799 and RM1,699, respectively. They are available at the G-Shock Kiosk at Isetan The Japan Store and authorized dealer stores around the country.

All three models feature robust sapphire crystals, so there should be no worries about breakage. The EQB-1000AT and ECB-10AT automatically calibrate the time when paired with a smartphone using the dedicated app, delivering the precision busy team members need.

There is also an app which allows users to set world time quickly from a preset selection of about 300 cities. This is certainly something useful to the Scuderia AlphaTauri F1 team which will travel to different cities around the planet during the Formula 1 World Championship.

Based on the original slim-profile EQB-1000 chronograph with Tough Solar power system, the watch also allows users to set the time on the main display and inset-dial display to any two cities via the app. The durable Cordura fabric band withstands the toughest conditions. For some, there’s a certain appeal to being able to see inside objects and observe the different parts, especially mechanical ones. And where a watch is concerned, there are certainly many parts which are also moving and therefore provide a fascinating ‘show’ on the wrist.

Casio’s G-SHOCK Clear Skeleton Series clearly exploits this with its translucent casings in two versions based on the GA700 and DW5600 casings. A transparent resin is used for the casings, giving the illusion of being able to ‘see inside’ and in so doing, it makes the watch a fashionable accessory. However, unlike the GA-300 series which actually shows moving gears, these Clear Skeleton watches do not go to that extent.

For the Malaysian market, the latest Clear Skeleton Series is available in three versions – the DW-5600SK-1DR (RM459), DW-6900SK-1DR (RM479) and GA-700SK-1ADR (RM549). All have analogue and digital functionality, making them versatile timepieces for all occasions.

1980s look merged with today’s fashions
These new versions combine the popular semi-transparent resin construction with metallic colours to create a mix that captures the look of the 1980’s along with today’s fashions. Two-tone colouring matches bright hues with the semi-transparent resin for the case and band.

Unlike some watches (even Casio models) which have a ‘see-inside’ design, the Clear Skeleton Series watches have pointers that can be seen clearly. In some such watches, the excessive number of parts (especially metal ones that reflect) can make reading the time at a glance a bit difficult.

Casio toughness
Being Casio products, these watches naturally have the toughness that the brand has built its reputation since the first G-Shock model was released in 1983. Besides shock resistance, there’s also water resistance to a depth of 200 metres.

For viewing at night or in dim conditions, there’s electro-luminescent (EL) backlighting plus ‘afterglow’. This ‘afterglow’ feature keeps the backlighting on even after it is switched off. There’s also a Flash Alert with buzzer that sounds for alarms and hourly time signals.

For those who need accurate timing at sports event, the stopwatch measures in 1/100-second increments and there are elapsed time, split time, 1st-2nd place times modes. The automatic calendar is programmed up till 2039, like most Casio watches with the older modules. However, the latest ones are programmed up till 2099 which, of course, would be irrelevant to you personally.

TAG Heuer was the first to ring in the New Year at Suria KLCC, with a pop-up exhibition highlighting TAG Heuer Avant-Garde Watchmaking and unique legacy through exclusive and historical timepieces. Curated by Catherine Eberlé-Devaux, TAG Heuer Heritage Director, the exhibition is a tribute to TAG Heuer’s watchmaking innovations since 1860.

Creator of many firsts in Swiss watchmaking, TAG Heuer is relentlessly striving to bring additional technical performances to its iconic timepieces, from achieving ultimate accuracy to developing “disruptive designs” reflecting the brand’s unique spirit.

Among the models presented for the first time in Malaysia, visitors will have the chance to discover the oscillating pinion, patented in 1887, the Monaco V4, the first-ever watch mechanism powered by belts and the Mikrograph, launched in 1916, the first stopwatch accurate to 1/100th of a second used at the Olympics in the 20s.

They will also learn more on the Time of Trip, launched in 1911, the first 12-hour on-board chronograph for cars and airplanes with a power reserve of eight days, and on the TAG Heuer Monaco launched in 1969 and celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019, the first square water-resistant chronograph equipped with the first self-winding automatic chronograph movement.

The final highlight is a race car Porsche 911, visible in its Gulf Heuer livery, tribute to the relationship between Gulf Oil and TAG Heuer since the 70s, and of course a reminder of Steve McQueen (below) in his legendary role in the movie Le Mans, where he chose the TAG Heuer Monaco to wear throughout the filming.

The exhibition was inaugurated on January 7th by Amelia Sillard, Vice President of TAG Heuer Southeast Asia, Tay Liam Khoon, Executive Director of Cortina Watch, Andrew Brien, Executive Director of Suria KLCC and Francis Tan, Chief Operating Officer of Suria KLCC.

“All the pieces presented in this exhibition are major breakthroughs TAG Heuer has created since 1860, and are the best illustration of the brand Avant-Garde spirit and incredible legacy in watchmaking” said Amelia Sillard. “It’s a real pleasure and honour to be able to show those unique museum pieces, especially flown in from Switzerland, in Kuala Lumpur”

The TAG Heuer exhibition, in partnership with Cortina Watch, will run from now till the 13th of January at the concourse of Suria KLCC.

If you are a fan or collector of special timepieces, this news will be of interest to you. Omologato watches, the same company that brought us the #Tifosi watch, have teamed up with John Surtees CBE to create a Chronograph with Motorsport heritage.

John Surtees, a former Formula 1 Champion with Ferrari, collaborated with Omologato to design a new timepiece late last year. After his unfortunate passing this March, Surtees’ family picked up where he left off and completed the project.

This watch, called The Surtees, is now available exclusively to the public in order to raise money for the Henry Surtees Foundation. Henry Surtees was John’s Surtees’ son, who at just 18 years old, was killed whilst competing in a Formula 2 race at Brands Hatch in 2009.

The Foundation supports schemes and projects to provide funding multiple air ambulance services around the UK to enable them to carry blood and plasma on board its aircraft. This helps enhance pre-hospital critical care that their crew can offer at the scene of accidents.

Built for a worthy cause, The Surtees is an elegant timepiece with great thought put into its design. Hand-crafted and built with quality in mind, it pays tribute to the only racer to be crowned champion of both the four and two wheel racing world.

It’s watch face is painted blue to pay homage to Surtees’ racing livery on his F1 Ferrari racer. In fact he is the only driver in the company’s history to win the title in a non red car. In 1964, Enzo Ferrari dropped the traditional red in favour of a blue and white colour scheme.

Surtees’ used this new livery in the final two grand prixs of that season. He clinched the title at the final race and entered the record books as the only racer to date, that has been crowned champion of the motorcycle and car world.

The outer and inner markings are a homage to the meter clusters of vintage racing cars and the light blue outline contrasts the navy blue watch face, to provide an illusion of a speedometer.
If you look closely at the bottom section of the watch, you would notice that each timepiece has this identical signature in the same location. This signature belongs to Surtees himself, and as such, each watch has a part of the racing legend.

Omologato founder Shami Kalra said: “Il Grande John was the most versatile racer, an icon for lovers of two and four wheels and a Motorsport legend. I learnt that John rarely lent his name to a brand or product, so it was a true privilege that he wanted to be involved and share his story with Omologato.”

IF you would like to know more about the watch, head on over to omologato watches’ website for the latest information. And to know more about the Henry Surtees foundation, check out the following link www.henrysurteesfoundation.com.

What do Ferrari fans and timepieces have in common? Well, its #Tifosi by Omologato Watches. It’s a model that prides itself on being affordable, durable and classy for racing/automotive fans. The company is marketing these pieces as beater watches, ones that you wouldn’t mind getting scuffed while enjoying wheel to wheel action at a racetrack.

A first for the company, #Tifosi watches will be offered in a variety of different designs and nomenclature that pay homage to some of the more memorable names and places in motoring and Motorsport. They are, Stuttgart, Hethel, R, Weissach and Fiorano, which are words that might be lost on the layman, but not to the Tifosi.

Omologato founder Shami Kalra said, “We are delighted to launch the new #TIFOSI watch. It is a truly affordable and durable timepiece, which we designed in a number of different styles to accommodate all audiences. It is a watch bespoke to you.”

He then added, “Deriving its name from the Prancing Horses’ legions of fans, the #TIFOSI was a truly apt title to give to the people who wear our watches and share their travels of Motorsport events from race circuits and car meets around the world. We are all #TIFOSI.”

These five different names correspond to five bespoke designs that encompass a robust 40mm stainless steel case and the Omologato logo featured in the seconds hand. There a number of double-layered nylon NATO to choose from. Their design and colour combination emulate that of racing liveries found on a variety of famous race cars or teams.

In case you didn’t know, the word Tifosi is commonly used to describe Ferrari’s legion of fans that live and breathe the brand. In fact, the word is widely used all over the world to describe Ferrari loyalists. However, it is actually an Italian word that means “fans” and is used to describe a group of supporters of a sport or something similar.

Prices for these watches start at £149 (RM821) in the UK, and if you would like to know more or place an order for one of these watches, visit the Omologato website at www.omologatowatches.com.
