Sepang International Circuit to close for upgrades

Sepang International Circuit (SIC) announces temporary closure for upgrades and resurfacing from February to May 2016.

The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) management have announced that it will close the circuit for several months in 2016 to accommodate its upgrading and resurfacing works. The circuit will be closed from February 15 until May 8.

According to the circuit’s press statement, the works will involve the entire length of the 5.54km-long circuit, and is a mandatory requirement in ensuring that the course continues to be homologated to meet with FIA Grade 1 and FIM Grade A circuit standards. The circuit last underwent an upgrade back in 2007.

SIC did shed some light into what specific areas are being upgraded as well. Besides resurfacing the circuit’s entire 5.54km length, upgrades will be performed towards the drainage system, as well as the kerbs and the run-off area tarmac. The work will also involve a rebuild of the gravel bed area at Turn 1 and Turn 15.

The circuit is expected to resume its regular operation and business as soon as the revamp in completed in May.
