New tinted window rules announced by Anthony Loke

The Minister of Transport, YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook, held a press conference earlier today to explain the new rules and regulations for tinted windows on vehicles here in Malaysia. The new ruling on tinted windows was announced just now together with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and it turns out that the news is better than we initially anticipated.

Previously, the rules on tinted windows applies on how much visible light can be transmitted into the cabin area upon passing through the tinted glass. Those who followed the rules to the teeth are aware that the Visible Light Transmission (VLT) rules are as follow (old rules):

  • Front windscreen – 70%
  • Front windows – 50%
  • Back windows & rear screen – 30%

The new rules announced by the Minister of Transport stated that the only change that has been made are for the back windows and rear screen, in which that the previous 30% VLT rule has been removed. In other words, there will be no more limitations in terms of how dark your tinted windows can be (just for the rear and back windows).

In cases where there are individuals who want to apply for darker tints for the front windscreen and front passenger windows, an application fee of RM50 will be imposed. If the application is successful, the individual must then pay an RM5,000 fee which will see the darker-than-usual tint to be valid only for two years.

Such cases are only acceptable for those who have health issues of concern about safety and security. For health reasons, individuals must get a written approval from an official government medical institution expert and will be exempted from any payment.

All in all, those who conformed to the previous ruling on tinted windows won’t be affected by this new announcement. In fact, you can get darker tints for the rear windows if you wish without any trouble from authorities.
