60 weeks needed to become a ‘good driver’?

According to recent research done by UK’s Young Driver, the country’s driver lessons provider, an average time that motorists need to become a ‘good driver’ after having obtained their new licenses is around 60 weeks. That’s 15 months of road experience behind the wheel to gain an acceptable level of skills, confidence, and experience.

The research also stated that more than 17% of participants agreed that it actually takes more than two years to become competent motorists on the road. This statement was released due to the fact that one out of every five new drivers were involved in a collision within the first six months of passing their test.

Out of the thousand drivers questioned, one of every four agreed that they were overconfident when driving and when combined with their lack of experience in driving on open roads with other motorists, may lead to dangerous driving scenarios.

This research was mainly conducted in the UK and with the high statistics of road deaths and accidents here in Malaysia, a new and fresh survey amongst our drivers could prove beneficial in not only reducing the number of unwanted incidents but also update our current methods of driving education in the country.

If something is greatly needed to improve our road situations, starting from the basics with updating lesson modules at driving schools can be a great step in educating the ever-growing number of motorists on the road. What do you guys think?
