Proton Maintains Positive Upward Trajectory In Growing Market

With the car market continuing its steady recovery, helped by two festive seasons that will occur during the first quarter of the year, sales for Proton have been booming. Compared to the same month in 2022, the February sales volume this year was 52% higher with 14,033 units (domestic and export) delivered.

The volume was 20.1% higher than January while for the first two months of the year, the year-to-date volume has increased to 88% to 25,714 units. Where market share is concerned, it was estimated to be 22.7% as the official market data has not been released by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) yet.

With a second consecutive month of sales leadership for B-segment sedans, the Persona is demonstrating its popularity even against newer rivals. As the issue of component shortages disrupting production has diminished, more units have been available for delivery to waiting customers.

With 2,313 units delivered in February, the model broke through the 2,000-unit barrier for a third consecutive month, the first time it has achieved this since doing it for 5 months in a row between June and October 2020.

In 2023, the X50 retains leadership of the B-segment SUV and also remains the most popular SUV in Malaysia. Sales continue rising with 3,247 units delivered in February, an 11% increase over the first two months of the year.

The evergreen Exora MPV is enjoying a resurgence in sales, with a 216% over the same period in 2022. It has long been the C-segment MPV leader as it meets the needs of many Malaysian families in terms of space and versatility.

Commenting on the strong start to the year, Roslan Abdullah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Proton, said that it reflects the popularity of the brand’s current model offerings. He added then, just like other brands, much of the volume is currently being driven by fulfilment of tax-exempt bookings but new booking numbers also remain healthy.

“We are hopeful of continuing our sales growth trajectory for the rest of the year. Over the next few months, Proton will also be making several announcements to shape the company’s direction for 2023 and beyond. This will be a busy year as we establish our presence in new segments, enter the new energy vehicle (NEV) market and build our EV credentials when sales of the smart #1 begin,” he said.
