Chery Auto Malaysia has marked a milestone with the successful roll-off of its first Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit of the Omoda E5 at the Inokom Plant. This achievement underscores Chery’s dedication to supporting local manufacturing, advancing Malaysia’s industrial growth, and contributing to a sustainable automotive future.
The Omoda E5, celebrated for its cutting-edge design and advanced technology, reinforces Chery’s commitment to delivering high-quality vehicles tailored for Malaysian consumers. Leo Chen, President of Chery Auto Malaysia, emphasised the significance of the CKD milestone, stating, “By assembling our cars locally, we not only offer competitive pricing but also demonstrate Chery’s long-term commitment in Malaysia, fostering local job creation and skill development.”
Leo Chen added that this initiative aligns with Malaysia’s localization policies and will support the nation’s ambitions to become a regional hub for electric vehicles (EVs). Dato’ Jeffri Salim Davidson, CEO of Sime Darby Berhad, highlighted the partnership with Chery, underscoring Sime Darby’s commitment to sustainable mobility solutions and automotive assembly growth.
YB Liew Chin Tong, Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, applauded Chery for employing a Malaysian-majority workforce, aligning with Malaysia’s vision of better jobs and pay for locals. He noted that as of September 2024, Malaysia had 32,543 Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) registered, with most being imported as Completely Built-Up (CBU) units. With the line-off of the Omoda E5, Chery joins the ranks of brands assembling EVs locally, a crucial step in reducing Malaysia’s reliance on imports and promoting local manufacturing.
Omoda E5: Advancing Sustainable Mobility in Malaysia
The Omoda E5, Chery’s first pure electric model launched in March, boasts a 201hp electric motor, 340Nm of torque, and a 61 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery offering a 430km range (WLTP). Supporting fast DC charging, the vehicle charges from 30% to 80% in just 28 minutes and includes ADAS 2.5 for enhanced driver assistance.
This model joins Chery’s lineup, including the Tiggo 7 PRO, Tiggo 8 PRO, and Omoda 5, all locally assembled in Kulim. Chery’s plans to expand its electrified offerings include plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) slated for release next year.
Commitment to a Greener Future
Chery’s global strategy focuses on advancing EVs and green technology, contributing to an annual green revenue of RMB 10.9 billion (RM6.7 billion). This aligns with Malaysia’s goals for sustainable development, as Chery continues to broaden its regional presence and support Malaysia’s transition to an electrified automotive future.
