In a historic feat, the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD has firmly etched its name into the annals of automotive performance by becoming the first American car to conquer the Nurburgring Nordschleife in under seven minutes. This iconic track, known as the ultimate proving ground for high-performance vehicles, witnessed the Mustang GTD achieve an impressive lap time of 6:57.685, driven by Multimatic Motorsports’ ace driver Dirk Müller.
This groundbreaking achievement places the Mustang GTD among the elite ranks of production sports cars, boasting the fifth-fastest lap time ever recorded at the Nurburgring. The car, which draws on over 800hp, demonstrates not only raw power but also advanced engineering finesse.
Ford CEO Jim Farley had set this ambitious goal during the Mustang GTD’s unveiling in August 2023. His vision was to blend the lessons learned from decades of motorsport with cutting-edge technology to create a vehicle capable of competing with the world’s best. “While we are immensely proud of this milestone, we see it as just the beginning. There is always room for improvement and further refinement,” Farley commented.
The success of the Mustang GTD is attributed to the tireless efforts of a dedicated team of engineers and designers over two years. Their journey, chronicled in a compelling documentary titled “The Road To The Ring,” offers an inside look at the trials, tribulations, and triumphs experienced on the path to this historic lap. This documentary, available on various Ford platforms, provides fans with an exclusive behind-the-scenes experience.
At the core of the Mustang GTD’s performance are its advanced features, including carbon-ceramic brakes, active aerodynamics, a powerful supercharger, and semi-active suspension. These elements, combined with a lightweight carbon-fiber body, distinguish the Mustang GTD from its GT3 racing counterpart, as it is not constrained by the same regulations. The car, while maintaining its stock status, was fitted with Nurburgring-mandated safety gear such as a competition seat and roll cage.
The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD not only showcases the pinnacle of Mustang engineering but also heralds a new era for American sports cars on the global stage.
