GWM Haval H9 Showcased at Auto Shanghai 2025 – Potential Entry to the Malaysian Market?

Great Wall Motor began pre-sales for the second-generation Haval H9 in August of last year, a rugged, off-road-focused SUV that enters the Chinese market with three distinct trim levels. Prices range from ¥205,900 to ¥235,900, which roughly converts to RM132,600 to RM151,900.

Recently showcased at Auto Shanghai 2025, the all-new Haval H9 is aimed at off-road enthusiasts seeking a robust, medium-to-large SUV. Notably, two exterior variants are offered – one with an external spare tyre and another with an external storage box in place of the spare wheel.

The dimensions of the external spare tyre version are 5070mm (length) x 1976mm (width) x 1930mm (height) with a 2850mm wheelbase, while the external storage box version measures slightly shorter at 4950–5000 mm in length, with similar width and height. Despite the slight differences in length, both variants share the same wheelbase, ensuring similar cabin space.

Engineered for rugged terrain, the second-generation H9 boasts a maximum ground clearance of 224 mm, wading depth of 800 mm, and approach and departure angles of 31° and 25° respectively. This off-road capability is supported by a new exterior design that adopts a boxy silhouette, paying homage to retro SUV styling. Distinctive elements include a square front grille with circular headlamps, side-opening tailgate, vertically-stacked rear lights, roof racks, a panoramic sunroof, and classic door handles.

Buyers can choose between two powertrains: a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, producing 221hp and 384Nm, or a 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel unit mated to a 9-speed automatic, delivering 184hp and 480Nm. All versions come equipped with a Torque-On-Demand intelligent four-wheel drive system and offer seven terrain-specific driving modes – standard, sport, economy, 4L, sand, mud, and snow – along with special features like tank turn and low-speed off-road cruise.

With a towing capacity rated at 2268kg, the new H9 supports both five-seat and seven-seat configurations. Practicality is emphasised with 45 storage areas throughout the cabin. The five-seater model provides a generous boot space of 791 litres, expandable to 1814 litres when the second row is folded flat. Additional refinements include double-layer laminated soundproof glass on the windscreen and front windows, as well as a body structure comprising 34 laminated panels for enhanced noise reduction.

Inside, the vehicle offers a modern, tech-forward cabin. It features a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, a 14.6-inch floating central infotainment screen, a digital instrument cluster, a prominent gear lever, and numerous tactile buttons on the centre console. At the heart of its digital systems lies the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, which powers the infotainment and supports FOTA (Firmware Over-The-Air) updates. The vehicle also supports remote start and smartphone-based remote monitoring.

For safety and driver convenience, the second-generation Haval H9 includes 13 Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) functions, reinforcing its position as a technologically advanced off-roader.

GWM Malaysia is preparing to introduce the all-new GWM Tank 500 to the local market, positioning it as a formidable contender in the premium SUV segment. Currently, the Haval H6 is being produced at the EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) facility in Melaka and is being sold for RM139,800. If GWM Malaysia plays its cards right, the second-gen Haval H9 could become a breakthrough model in the off-road SUV segment. With attractive pricing, robust features, and the backing of a growing local support network, the H9 might become a compelling alternative to established Japanese models, especially for those seeking a tech-savvy, off-road-capable SUV with modern comforts.
