Chinese carmaker Chery has introduced its latest electric vehicle, the QQ Domi, a compact electric SUV aimed at budget-conscious consumers in China. With pricing starting from only ¥59,900 (around RM38,500), the new model enters the market at a time when competition in China’s electric vehicle (EV) segment continues to heat up.
The QQ Domi is available in two variants. The base version, available at a promotional launch price, offers a driving range of up to 305km on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) and is powered by a 28.5 kWh battery. The extended-range model, priced at ¥69,900 (around RM45,000), increases the driving distance to 405km with a larger 39.33 kWh battery.
With dimensions measuring 3,720mm in length, 1,700mm in width, and 1,608mm in height, the QQ Domi sits in the same class as BYD’s popular Seagull EV, a leading contender in the compact EV space. Despite its small footprint, Chery’s new model offers features typically seen in more premium offerings.
Standard equipment includes a 10.25-inch central floating infotainment screen and a 7-inch digital instrument display. Voice recognition, rear parking radar, and a reversing camera are also included. The extended-range version is further equipped with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing users to power external electronics such as home appliances and portable devices directly from the vehicle.
Both battery options support fast charging, capable of replenishing the charge from 30% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes, enhancing convenience for urban drivers.
Chery positions the QQ Domi as a “fashionable and fun” choice for younger, tech-savvy motorists looking for an affordable alternative to conventional vehicles. The car is expected to appeal to the same demographic currently flocking to BYD’s Seagull, which has a starting price of ¥69,800 (around RM45,000) and remains one of China’s top-selling EVs.
By undercutting rivals in price while delivering a competitive range and features, Chery aims to secure a stronger foothold in the burgeoning mini EV segment. The QQ Domi’s launch underscores the ongoing price war in China’s electric car market, where automakers are increasingly slashing costs in a bid to gain market share and attract entry-level buyers.
With the QQ Domi now on sale across China, Chery is likely to see strong interest from budget-conscious consumers, signalling the continued growth and diversification of the world’s largest electric vehicle market.
