Hyundai Motor Company has officially launched Hyundai Motor Malaysia (HMM), transitioning from third-party distribution to full-fledged direct operations. This shift signals Hyundai’s ambition to take greater control over its brand, sales, and service experience in the region.
To strengthen this move, Hyundai Motor Malaysia provided us with a preview of three new models: the new Tucson, STARIA, and the all-new Santa Fe.
So what’s new for the Tucson?
Hyundai has given its popular Tucson a bold refresh, and it’s not just a facelift—it’s a full-on statement. With a sleek new look, a high-tech interior, and the introduction of a hybrid variant, the updated Tucson is clearly out to shake up the C-segment SUV market. Whether you’re after style, performance, or a bit of both, the new Tucson delivers in spades.
One of the first things that’ll grab your attention is the panoramic curved 12.3-inch HD display that stretches across the dashboard. It blends beautifully into a redesigned interior that’s all about modern comfort and connectivity. Gloss black and alloy-effect accents add a premium touch, and the revamped centre console, steering wheel, and door panels round out the upscale cabin. Higher-spec variants, like the Prime and Prestige, come with leather seats, a wireless charging pad, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror—little details that really elevate the day-to-day driving experience.
Under the bonnet, there’s something for everyone. The base Style variant comes with a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine, producing 156PS and 192Nm of torque, paired with a smooth 6-speed automatic transmission. Step up to the Prime or Prestige trims, and you’ll get a punchier 1.6-litre turbocharged engine that kicks out 180PS and 264Nm, mated to a quick-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
If you’re after something greener without giving up power, the all-new hybrid Prestige combines that same 1.6 turbo engine with an electric motor, boosting total output to 235PS. It still uses a traditional 6-speed auto and even offers all-wheel drive, giving it a real edge for those who want versatility with better fuel efficiency.
Of course, it’s not just about what’s under the hood. The Tucson’s bold exterior design features Hyundai’s signature Parametric Jewel Lighting, a sharp-looking radiator grille, and clever touches like an integrated rear wiper and updated rear emblem. The fuel tank varies depending on the variant—54 litres for the petrol versions, slightly less at 52 litres for the hybrid.
Hyundai’s really doubled down on safety, too. Most of the advanced driver assistance features are available on the Prime and Prestige models, whether petrol or hybrid. These include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with a smart junction turning function, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, and Smart Cruise Control that maintains a set distance from the car ahead. Other highlights include Lane Keeping and Lane Following Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance, and even a system that reminds you if you’ve left someone or something in the back seat.
The Prestige variants go a step further with features like the Blind-Spot View Monitor, which shows a live feed of your blind spot when you indicate, and a Surround View Monitor that gives you a bird’s eye view when parking.
What’s new for the STARIA?
The Hyundai STARIA isn’t your average MPV—it’s more like a spaceship on wheels. With its futuristic styling and smooth, flowing lines, it stands out boldly on the road. But it’s not just about looks; the STARIA delivers serious substance too, especially when it comes to space, comfort, and flexibility. Whether you go for the 7-seater or the 10-seater configuration, this updated model is designed to handle anything from family road trips to group outings, all while keeping every passenger in mind.
Under the bonnet, every variant runs on a capable 2.2-litre inline four-cylinder diesel engine, pushing out 177PS at 3,800 rpm and delivering solid torque. The regular models churn out 430Nm between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm, while the hybrid Prestige variant offers a slightly different torque curve at 367Nm between 1,000 and 4,000 rpm. All versions send power to the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission, and you’ve got a 75-litre fuel tank to keep you going for longer journeys.
Visually, the STARIA Prestige really pulls ahead. The 7-seater variant gets a dual sunroof and tinted brass chrome trim that adds a luxurious touch to its sleek body. Full LED projection headlamps, LED rear lamps, and 18-inch machine-finished alloy wheels (on both 7- and 10-seater Prestige models) elevate the exterior further. Inside, it’s all about the experience, especially in the Prestige 7-seater with its premium relaxation seats that include leg rests, plus a Bose 12-speaker sound system for a rich audio experience.
There’s also an 8-inch touchscreen display and automatic climate control to keep things cool and connected. With 431 litres of boot space in the 7-seater, you won’t be short on room for gear either.
The STARIA also brings peace of mind with Hyundai SmartSense, a suite of advanced driver assistance features. Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist helps prevent accidents with vehicles, pedestrians, and even cyclists, and also watches out at junctions during left turns. Driver Attention Alert with Leading Vehicle Departure Alert monitors your alertness and nudges you if you’re distracted—helpful when traffic starts moving again. Blind-Spot Collision Warning keeps tabs on the side, while Safe Exit Assist makes sure passengers don’t swing a door open into danger. These are available in Prime and Prestige trims.
For those who opt for the Prestige 7- or 10-seater, you also get Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go, making highway driving more relaxing. Lane Following Assist and Lane Keeping Assist help you stay centred in your lane, while Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist steps in when reversing out of tight spots. The Blind-Spot View Monitor and Surround View Monitor further enhance safety by improving your awareness of everything around you. And let’s not forget the tire pressure monitoring system, which ensures your ride stays smooth and efficient.
Stay tuned for the official launch of the new Tucson and STARIA next week, with the price announcement.
