Triumph Scrambler 1200 XC and XE

The Scrambler 1200 XC is built for the road and for real off-road riding fun while the range-topping Scrambler 1200 XE is equipped with an even higher level of off-road capability. With a unique Öhlins collaboration, plus a dedicated new Scrambler chassis tailored for focused off-road capability and comfortable rider ergonomics, the new Scrambler 1200s have been developed to deliver a first-in-class dual purpose ‘classic and adventure’ capability.

Both models feature totally unique new fully-adjustable twin-spring Öhlins rear suspension units that deliver category leading wheel travel and suspension capability, for amazing off-road capability and ground clearance. The XC delivers 200 mm wheel travel while the XE delivers 250 mm and both are equipped with piggy-back reservoirs. Both Scramblers also feature a new crafted long travel aluminium swingarm, which is longer on the XE version, making the new XC and XE truly capable in all riding conditions.

Both the 1200 XC and XE deliver category-leading torque and a dedicated ‘scrambler tune’ courtesy of the latest generation Bonneville High Power 1200cc engine. The charismatic 270° firing interval ensures a smooth, linear power delivery from the slick six-speed gearbox. The engine delivers peak power of 90 PS @ 7,400 rpm, which is an incredible 38% more than the 2019 Street Scrambler. It is also tuned to deliver ‘high torque’ off-road and on, low down and across the mid-range, with peak torque of 110Nm at a low 3,950 rpm, 37.5% greater than the Street Scrambler.

The Scrambler 1200s feature a class-leading standard of rider-focused technology, including:

  1. Second generation TFT instruments — Both models feature Triumph’s latest generation full-colour TFT instruments, with a stylish design and two information layout design themes that can be personalised. This includes an all-new feature that allows the rider to update the start-up screen message with their name.
  2. Up to 6 riding modes — Both models feature Road, Rain, Off-Road, Sport and Rider-configurable riding modes which adjust the throttle response, ABS settings and traction control setting to suit rider preference and riding conditions. In addition, the Scrambler 1200 XE also features the ‘Off-Road Pro’ mode, which delivers our most off-road focused set up for advanced adventure riding and scrambling. The ‘Off-Road Pro’ mode turns ABS and traction control off and uses the ‘Off-Road’ throttle map.
  3. Optimised Cornering ABS (XE only) — Exclusive to the Scrambler 1200 XE is the Optimised Cornering ABS, fitted as standard. This maintains the optimum braking performance, whatever the lean angle. The Scrambler 1200 XC features switchable ABS and its three ABS modes are selected manually via the Rider-configurable riding mode.
  4. Optimised Cornering Traction Control (XE only) — The Scrambler 1200 XE also features Optimised Cornering Traction Control as standard, which automatically adapts the level of traction control depending on the riding conditions. This maintains the optimum level of traction control for the lean angle of the bike. The Scrambler XC features instead switchable traction control with five ride modes, which are selected manually via the Rider-configurable riding mode.
  5. Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) (XE only) — An advanced Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), developed in partnership with Continental, supports the optimum function of the Optimised Cornering ABS and Traction Control on the Scrambler 1200 XE. This takes constant measurements of roll, pitch, yaw, lean angle and acceleration rates, responding with appropriate active safety features.
  6. World’s first integrated GoPro control system — A world’s first for any motorcycle – Triumph introduces an integrated GoPro control system, facilitating GoPro camera operation, which is facilitated by an accessory fitted connectivity Bluetooth module. The connection and control is displayed on the TFT instruments, enabling intuitive video and photo operation via the switchgear.
  7. Turn-by-turn navigation system — Another Triumph first comes with the introduction of an integrated turn-by-turn navigation system powered by Google – their first premium motorcycle manufacturer partnership. The navigation system is facilitated through an accessory fitted Bluetooth connectivity module. Once the rider has selected the route on the Triumph app and set-off, the instruments present turn symbols on the screen using simple graphic icons. With this system, the rider has at their disposal a navigation system, a route planner, the final destination and points of interest such as hotels, petrol stations and restaurants.

Both Scrambler 1200s come in a choice of two alternative premium twin-paint schemes:

  • Scrambler 1200 XC — Jet Black and Matt Black, Khaki Green and Brooklands Green
  • Scrambler 1200 XE — Fusion White and Brooklands Green, Cobalt Blue and Jet Black.

Triumph Speed Twin

The beautiful new 2019 Speed Twin re-introduces a legendary Triumph name and sets a new category benchmark for how a custom roadster should ride and feel, with class leading handling and thrilling performance. Boasting a dedicated new lighter chassis and suspension set-up, the Speed Twin delivers comfortable engaged roadster ergonomics, which combined with the high specification cartridge front forks and twin rear suspension units with adjustable spring pre-load, make for a truly unparalleled ride.

High specification twin Brembo 4-piston axial calipers on the front with twin discs, and a 2-piston floating caliper and single disc on the rear, provide excellent stopping power, complementing the motorcycle’s modern roadster character. The Speed Twin’s engine is a 1200cc High Power 8-valve, parallel twin Bonneville engine, specifically updated with `Thruxton’ tune to churn out peak power of 97PS @ 6,750rpm and peak torque of 112 Nm @ 4,950rpm, respectively 49% and 40% more than the 2018 model.

Mazda Motor Corporation made the world premiere of the second model in its new-generation lineup, the Mazda CX-30 compact crossover SUV. As a new core model, the CX-30 will be rolled out to global markets, with sales starting from Europe this summer. The CX-30 will be on display to the public at the Geneva International Motor Show from March 7-17.

The CX-30 is a new compact crossover that combines the bold proportions of an SUV with elegant styling that embodies Mazda‘s Kodo design language. The development team hoped to create a car that would enrich customers’ lives by helping them and their loved ones make new and stimulating discoveries within their daily lives.

Relaxed and user-friendly packaging and a cabin that comfortably seats four adults mean customers can easily enjoy trips to any destination with family and friends. Moreover, the CX-30 was designed to be easy to drive. The increased height over a passenger car provides excellent visibility and makes getting in and out a breeze while the body size makes it easy to maneuver on any road and in any parking lot.

Basic performance attributes such as accelerating, turning and braking have been dramatically enhanced. Mazda’s Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture enables people to make the most of their natural sense of balance and the latest Skyactiv engines, including Skyactiv-X, allow responsive control of vehicle speed in any driving situation.

“We designed the CX-30 to be an essential partner in the customer’s daily life,” said Akira Marumoto, Mazda’s Representative Director, President and CEO. “It will be made at key global plants so we can deliver Mazda’s renowned driving pleasure and matured Kodo design to customers all over the world. Moving forward, our new products and technologies will ensure customers continue to see the value in owning a Mazda car. We aim to be recognized as a brand that forms the strongest of bonds with each customer.” he added.

Polestar has taken the next step in its development as the electric performance brand with the reveal of the new Polestar 2. Polestar 2 is the new all-electric fastback that brings electric performance cars to a broader and increasingly progressive audience. It offers avant-garde design and a unique customer experience in the premium compact electric segment. Polestar 2 is the first electric car to compete in the marketplace around the Tesla Model 3, with the range starting at a guide price of 39,900 euros. For the first 12 months of production, guide price of the launch edition is 59,900 euros1.

“Polestar 2 is our first fully electric car and first volume model. Everything about it has been designed and engineered with passion and dedication. As an electric performance brand, and through the forthcoming launch of a portfolio of fully electric cars, Polestar is determined to address the world’s air quality challenges. Polestar delivers electric performance cars that are great to own and drive,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer of Polestar.

Polestar 2 is a premium five-door fastback with two electric motors and a 78 kWh battery capacity2 that will enable a targeted range of 500 km3, based on Volvo Car Group’s adaptable Compact Modular Architecture platform (CMA). The 27-module battery pack is integrated into the floor and contributes to the rigidity of the chassis as well as improves the car’s noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels – road noise has been reduced by 3.7 dB compared to a traditional chassis.

Polestar will answer the important question of charging Polestar 2 with a smart, convenient and extensive approach. With a connected digital solution available both in-car and on mobile devices, Polestar is setting up strategic collaborations to give Polestar 2 owners easy and hassle-free access to the world’s largest public charging networks.

For Polestar, performance underlies the entire driving experience. The all-wheel drive electric powertrain in Polestar 2 produces 300 kW (408 hp) and 660 Nm (487 lb-ft). This translates to a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of less than 5 seconds.

The standard dynamic chassis can be enhanced by the Performance Pack that improves driving dynamics with Öhlins dampers, Brembo brakes and unique 20-inch forged wheels. Polestar’s signature gold seat belts, brake callipers and valve caps complete the performance visuals.

Highlighting the technology spearhead role that Polestar plays within the Volvo Car Group, Polestar 2 is one of the first cars in the world to embed an infotainment system powered by Android. The Android backbone provides a solid and adaptable digital environment for apps and vehicle functions to coexist, and brings embedded Google services to a car for the first time – including the Google Assistant, Google Maps with support for electric vehicles and the Google Play Store5. Natural voice control and a new 11-inch touch screen display bring the new interface to life.

Phone-as-Key technology enables car sharing and a more integrated ownership experience, as well as Polestar’s connected services such as pick-up and delivery. It also allows Polestar 2 to sense the driver upon approach. Smart features like enlarged graphics in the instrument cluster allow the driver to easily see the charging status and range before entering the car. Polestar 2 can also predetermine the driver’s next move to create a seamless experience with a prepared cabin and quick start sequence.

Maximilian Missoni, head of Design at Polestar, comments: “We decided to bring something different to the segment. Our avant-garde design has evolved from Polestar 1 into an edgier, bolder statement. We have also designed a standard vegan interior with progressive textiles that will appeal to the forward-thinking audience who will subscribe to Polestar 2.”

Design-led features include Pixel LED headlights4 and proximity lighting which enable a unique welcome sequence, Polestar’s now-signature frameless side mirrors and the unique illuminated Polestar logo, which is reflected onto the car’s panoramic glass roof.

In common with all Polestar cars, Polestar 2 will only be available for ordering online. The guide purchase price for the launch version of Polestar 2 is 59,900 euros1 with subscription pricing to follow at a later date. Pre-orders are open at polestar.com. Production of Polestar 2 begins in early 2020 in China for global markets in both left- and right-hand drive.

Polestar 2 made its first public appearance at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show in March, and then embark on a global roadshow in Europe, North America and China throughout 2019. Polestar 2 will also be available in a network of soon-to-be-opened Polestar Spaces that will provide physical viewing and test drive opportunities.

Initial launch markets include China, the United States, Canada, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK. Other markets are under consideration for future expansion.

That’s right! Northern region HOGs can rejoice, for they now have a place to call home right in the middle of Juru Autocity, Penang, with the official opening of Harley-Davidson Penang!

But not only that, HDMP (Harley-Davidson Malaysia, Penang) also took the opportunity to announce the launch and introduction of 14 CKD models built in Bangkok, Thailand… one of them is the HD Fat Bob below…

Both the red and black bikes are identical models, but the former is made in Bangkok, while the latter is made in Milwaukee, USA. There is no telling them apart, both are identical in terms of specs, but the one made in Bangkok costs RM40,000 less. Yes, FORTY THOUSAND ringgit less than the one “Made in USA”.

HDMP is located at Juru Autocity, right next to the Ford showroom.

Trucks. 4x4s. Pick-up Trucks. Call them what you will, but a couple of decades ago they didn’t exist… well not on the highways anyway. Since Mercedes-Benz likes to call itself “the inventor of the automobile” I guess it’s only apt to call Ford Malaysia “the inventor of the lifestyle pick-up truck”… no, really.

You see, not so very long ago in the early 90s, Ford Malaysia‘s (then known as AMIM Ford) passenger car sales were suffering, with only the outdated Laser and Telstar being sold, and I use that word ‘sold’ very loosely. So what did they do? In a masterstroke of genius, because their cars weren’t selling very well in their given segments, AMIM Ford decided to create a whole new market segment. And ‘lo and behold, the ‘lifestyle’ pick-up truck was born.

I owned the very first of those trucks, it was called the Ford Courier. It was a naturally-aspirated 2.5L diesel, and if memory serves, the model survived one update (Courier Splash – yellow) and was replaced by the turbocharged Ranger, which henceforth became one of the market leaders in the lifestyle pick-up truck segment, despite just about every other carmaker jumping on the truck-bandwagon, or rather cargo-bed, and introducing their own trucks.

The Ford Ranger 4×4 has evolved over the years, and while still staying true to its “Built Ford Tough” credo, it’s also become – for better or worse (see video below) – a lot more ‘liveable’ and domesticated. It’s like capturing a wild animal and eventually taming it enough to become a house pet. Never forget though, that behind that docile exterior, an untamed beast still lurks…

One of those beasts of course is the new Ford Ranger Raptor, which you can read more about and see videos of here, as well as one of the 4 new Rangers that were recently launched, this Ranger XLT Limited+. Boasting a first-in-class 10-speed automatic transmission, yes, TEN speeds, the new Ranger XLT+ is powered  by a new 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine that churns out 213Ps and whopping 500Nm of torque.

It also has an array of other FIC attributes including AEB or Autonomous Emergency Braking & Front Collision Alert, Lane-Departure Warning, Semi-Automatic Parallel Parking, Adaptive Cruise Control and an Easy-Lift Tailgate. Anyone who’s ever owned a truck will know just how heavy that rear tailgate (above) is.

The new Rangers, finally with hydraulic bonnet struts (above), have definitely moved the goalposts insofar as the lifestyle pick-up truck market is concerned, not only are they still very much “Built Ford Tough” but they now also offer an incredible level of refinement unheard of in Rangers of yore.

BONUS! Why I love the older Ford Ranger 3.2 Wildtrak…

“No replacement for displacement”… we’ve often heard this adage, but does it apply to trucks? Here’s an older model with 3,200cc of brute force, and here’s what I think of it!
