Bermaz Motor

It’s been a while since we heard about updates for the Mazda range distributed in Malaysia by Bermaz Motor. The last time was in April for the latest MX-5 RF and Mazda6, and a month earlier, the company also announced that bookings for the new CX-3 were accepted.

Now comes the updated CX-9, flagship of Mazda’s SUV range, which gets cosmetic as well as technical upgrades. The 3-row SUV is available in two variants – 2WD and AWD – both using the SKYACTIV-G 2.5 turbocharged petrol engine with an output of 228 ps/420 Nm and a 6-speed SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission.

2021 Mazda CX-9

Peninsular Malaysia pricing (without insurance and with 50% exemption on sales tax) is from RM319,847.40 for the 2WD variant and RM336,215.40 for the AWD variant. All new vehicles come with a 5-year warranty (or maximum of 100,000 kms) and also free maintenance service for the first 5 years (or maximum of 100,000 kms).

LED headlights with auto-levelling, LED daytime running lights and taillights, and rain-sensing windshield wipers are also standard. Body colours available are Soul Red Crystal, Machine Gray, Snowflake White Pearl, Sonic Silver, Deep Crystal Blue and Jet Black.

The interior features burgundy-coloured leather seats and black interior trim on the dash, door panels and handle bezels. The infotainment system now has wireless Apple CarPlay along with Android Auto capabilities for easier connectivity with smartphones. Also new are a wireless charger (if you have a phone with the capability) and paddle shifters.

Other standard features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, 3-zone automatic climate control, 10 power adjustments for the driver’s seat with memory positioning, interior LED accents, Bluetooth handsfree phone and audio pairing, keyless entry and push-button start.

2021 Mazda CX-9

As the flagship model, the CX-8 gets an advanced package of safety systems which Mazda calls i-Activsense. These help the driver to avoid accidents and can also automatically respond in dangerous situations by applying the brakes. Mazda Radar Cruise Control allows the driver to enjoy long-distance motoring as a safe gap will always be maintained even when a speed has been set for cruising.

Other systems in i-Activesense include Adaptive LED Headlights, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning with Lane-Keep Assist and Driver Attention Alert.

Soul Red and the importance of paint finish to Mazda designers

Staying at home more than going for casual outings is the ‘New Normal’ in this age of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the situation in different countries varies, the main thing is to minimize close contact so many of the usual activities we used to enjoy are not possible – for now. In Malaysia, we have been having the Movement Control Order (MCO) for over a year and this has largely restricted leaving the home, except for essential or emergency matters or to go to work (with permission from the authorities).

Fortunately, this is the 21st century where we have the internet, so even though people cannot meet face to face, they can still remain in regular contact via the various online channels. Perhaps it’s just not the same as sitting at the mamak stall with your friends but it is certainly better than 30 years ago when such a situation would have meant isolation and much more boredom. Now you can even go racing with your friends online!

‘Paint’ a digital canvas
For families with little ones, Mazda Malaysia (represented by Bermaz Motor) has an interactive colouring contest which is ideal at this #stayathome time. It’s a digital age activity where children can ‘paint’ a digital canvas on their computer or tablet (a smartphone would be too small).

There are five different drawings to colour, four of them with current Mazda models and one of the Mazda RX Vision concept car. There doesn’t seem to be a limit on the entries that can be submitted so participants can probably choose one or all the drawings offered.

Cash prizes and Mazda Premium Merchandise
The drawing tools are simple to use (like MS Paint) and once completed, they can be printed out as well. To join the contest, the completed image needs to be attached to the submission form available at the website. All submissions must reach Mazda Malaysia by August 18, 2021. Cash prizes and Mazda Premium Merchandise will be given as prizes for the entries judged to be the best.

Click here to go to the Mazda Interactive Colouring Contest page and if you are interested in knowing more about the models in the drawings, you can get information at www.mazda.com.my as well as take a virtual tour of the Mazda Malaysia flagship showroom in Glenmarie, Selangor.

The current Mazda CX-3 has been in the Malaysian market since 2018 and although there have been many new SUVs appearing over the past 3 years, the Mazda SUV’s looks are still fresh. Perhaps this has to do with the KODO design language which gives a timeless quality to the appearance.

Mazda at 100: Proving superior and reliable engineering through motorsports

The sale of pre-owned (not pre-registered) vehicles by franchise holders of various brands has been going on for some time. In fact, the first one in Malaysia might have been Federal Auto, which set up its own division to handle used cars as far back as the early 1970s. Other companies have also had used car divisions although most have not focussed greatly on this business, leaving it more to used car dealers.

These days, there is greater demand for pre-owned vehicles (a nicer term for used vehicles) and a number of companies, even premium brands, have invested in the business more substantially. They give more attention to the condition of the vehicles they offer, ensuring that the safety aspects are not compromised. In some case, they recondition the vehicle to ‘almost as good as new’.

Peace of mind purchase
Bermaz Motor, which handles Mazda, has also been dealing in pre-owned vehicles since 2015 through its Mazda Anshin centre in Glenmarie, Selangor. ‘Anshin’ is a Japanese word for ‘peace of mind’ so a selling point to customers is that they can have peace of mind buying from Mazda Anshin.

Many businesses are going online these days, partly due to the COVID-19 situation which has put limitations on interactions between people. As far as possible, companies now make it easier and safer for customers to view and know about what they offer before the need to actually be at the showroom.

Bermaz now as a website for its Mazda Anshin business and this serves as a one-stop platform for customers to sell or buy Mazda vehicles. It offers many company demo vehicles as well as those owned by customers who may have trade-in for a new model.

Every vehicle has to go through a thorough inspection and be certified before being offered for sale on the website.

111-point inspection to be certified
Regardless of whether the vehicles were previously demo units or in the company fleet, or a customer’s vehicle, every vehicle must undergo a comprehensive 111-point inspection. This is done by trained technicians at two authorized Mazda Service Centres in Selangor.

Owners who have this inspection done are charged a minimal fee of RM200. After the inspection, the owner will receive the best Mazda Anshin Certified Valuation and recommend selling price.

Mazda Anshin’s quality standards require that the pre-owned vehicles have had no major accident damages, no frame damages, and never been through a flood.

3 simple steps
Customers shopping for Mazda vehicles can browse through the Mazda Anshin website for the best- -value, best-quality models available, all with Mazda Anshin Certification. The existing warranty, if still in effect, will still be available to the new owner, as well as the free scheduled service based on from the original registration date.

So the next time you want a pre-owned Mazda, consider the offerings at the Mazda Anshin website. After all, it’s the company that knows Mazda best.

The duration of work is estimated to take approximately 1.5 hours or slightly longer, depending on the model and the service centre workload at the time of appointment. In conjunction with the 100th anniversary of Mazda this year, a selection of updated models has been announced by Bermaz Motor for the Malaysian market. The 2020 models are the Mazda2, CX-9 and MX-5 RF. Bookings are now accepted at Bermaz branches and authorized dealerships.

All new Mazda vehicles registered from January 1, 2019 onwards have a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty + 5 years of free scheduled maintenance (except for the BT-50 pick-up truck). Both the warranty and free scheduled maintenance have a mileage limit of 100,000 kms which will be applied if it occurs earlier than 5 years.

Mazda 100 years

2020 Mazda MX-5 RF

MAZDA MX-5 RF – from RM266,154
The MX-5 holds the Guinness World Record holder for the best-selling 2-seater sportscar of all time with over one million units produced, and the MX-5 RF is the highly desirable variant in the range. It comes with a retractable fastback (that’s what the ‘RF’ stands for) which gives it a unique look compared to having a traditional soft top.

For 2020, the MX-5 RF maintains the necessary characteristics of a driver’s car: lightweight, nimble and fun-to-drive. Most importantly, jinba-ittai gives the driver a sense of being one with the car, the way a rider and horse act in unison.

2020 Mazda MX-5 RF

2020 Mazda MX-5 RF

New convenience features within include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This means drivers have greatly expanded range of apps which can be accessed via the MAZDA CONNECT Infotainment display.

Aligned with the premium positioning path of brand, the 2020 MX-5 RF receives an updated Mazda badging and fonts design. It has more i-Activsense safety features that include Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Smart City Brake Support and Driver Attention Alert as standard.

2020 Mazda MX-5 RF

ISOFIX mounts for a childseat on the passenger side with airbag cut-off function are also provided so the little one can accompany daddy or mummy on the long drives.

Built in Japan, the MX-5 RF is powered by a SKYACTIV-G petrol engine that produces 181 ps/205 Nm from its 2-litre displacement. Transmission options are either a SKYACTIV-MT 6-speed manual transmission or 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

MAZDA2 – from RM103,670
Imported from Thailand, the Mazda2 is the model that welcomes drivers to the Mazda brand. Unlike most entry-level models, however, it has been developed on the concept of ‘a premium personal car that enriches everyday life’.  Furthermore, its high quality is not only in assembly and materials but also in the quality of driving.

2020 Mazda2

The 2020 Mazda2 has styling updates to freshen its looks, notably a new front grille design that has a similar styling concept as the grille on the some of the newer 7th generation products such as the Mazda3 and CX-30.

The front LEDs have new signature styling and on each corner are newly designed 16-inch alloy wheels with an enhanced texture and high-brightness paint. Like the MX-5 RF, the latest Mazda2 receives updated Mazda badging and fonts as part of the brand’s path to premium.

2020 Mazda22020 Mazda2

The interior offers a comfortable space with a new blue gray interior trim to create a sense of balanced quality and playfulness. The materials used have been carefully selected and are of a high quality.

The 2020 Mazda2 comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard as well, so many of your smartphone apps (Waze, Google Maps, Spotify, etc) can be transferred onto the dashboard. The MAZDA CONNECT Infotainment display provides management and access to the apps with seamless connectivity.

As for driving dynamics, the G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) system brings more advancements to the original G-Vectoring Control. This technology, first in the SKYACTIV-Vehicle Dynamics series, was the world’s first control system to vary engine torque in response to steering inputs. It helps to smoothen the car’s motion and uses the brakes to add direct yaw moment control for further enhanced handling stability. With GVC Plus, the driver can have a reassuring feeling of control when changing lanes on the highway or when driving on slippery surfaces.

2020 Mazda2

Driving comfort has also been enhanced with a retuned suspension system for smoother movement. New structured front seats improve the driver’s sense of balance, contributing to the sense of unity with the car and making driving easier.

The SKYACTIV-DRIVE 6-speed automatic transmission with Manual Shift mode transmission has been tuned for smoother acceleration which minimizes the head and body movements of passengers.  As before, the Mazda2 uses a SKYACTIV-G 1.5-litre engine that produces 114 ps/149 Nm.

MAZDA CX-9 – from RM319,610
The CX-9 is the flagship of the range and for 2020, it receives a few updates that focus on elevating the premium Mazda ownership experience. On the outside, the Mazda badging and fonts design are new and there’s a new gray metallic finish for the 20-inch aluminium wheels.

2020 Mazda CX-9

Inside the 3-row cabin, black leather seats with a new silver stitching finish give a rich feeling and premium ambience. Other standard features include an updated 9-inch Mazda Connect infotainment system, Autohold function as well as i-Stop function, seatbelt reminders for 2nd and 3rd row passengers, and two extra USB charging ports at the third row.

The powerful turbocharged SKYACTIV-G 2.5T petrol engine produces 228 ps/420 Nm which is transferred to the wheels via a quick-shifting 6-speed SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission. Customers can choose to have 2-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD).

2020 Mazda CX-9

The AWD variant has i-Activ all-wheel drive and the 2020 CX-9 is the first Mazda vehicle offered with the all-new Off-road Traction Assist feature. Replacing the traction control button, this feature can potentially help the driver when driving on uneven terrain. When the diagonal wheels lose traction, off-road traction assist will stop reducing the engine torque and increase the brake force on the wheels without traction. This transfers power to the wheels still on the ground to help allow the vehicle to regain traction and continue the drive.

2020 Mazda CX-9

G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) is also present as standard to improve steering response and complements the advanced safety technologies available. These are integrated in the i-ACTIVSENSE suite which includes Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Smart City Brake Support, and Lane Departure Warning with Lane-Keep Assist. The Smart City Brake Support is now updated with pedestrian detection support.
