BMW 2019

BMW Malaysia has introduced The 8, the newest member to the premium automaker’s portfolio of luxury vehicles. Developed on the race track to achieve supreme agility, precision, and poise, The 8 combines powerful engine with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system and BMW EfficientLightweight design measures – set to introduce new benchmarks in the luxury coupe segment.

“At the BMW Group, we’ve always had our sights on the future, and the First Generation BMW 8 Series is testimony to that. First introduced in 1989, the luxurious sports coupe was bold and ahead of its time in terms of performance, innovation and luxury. It was the first BMW vehicle to introduce electronic drive-by-wire throttle, Dynamic Stability Control and Integral Active Steering with the use of multi-link rear axle technology. Three decades on, we have taken the future-looking legacy of the BMW 8 Series and we are bringing this luxurious sports coupe into the modern era to set standards for the future.” said Mr. Harald Hoelzl, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia.

The 8 is introduced in the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe variant, boasting outstanding performance, emotion-stirring design, state-of-the-art luxury, exceptionally advanced equipment features when it comes to display and control technology, driver assistance and connectivity. Here’s an in-depth look at the new M850i as explained by BMW Malaysia themselves…

The exterior design of The 8 demonstrates a modern form of sporting appeal with a new styling language focusing on clarity, modernity and emotional engagement. The car’s low-slung design, an elongated silhouette with a slim window graphic and a roofline flowing elegantly into the rear with distinctive ‘double-bubble’ contouring, a long wheelbase and wide track widths are the defining visual elements of The 8’s proportions.

The latest V8 engine with incredible power delivery and acoustics also debuts in the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe, serving prodigious power delivery and an equally impressive soundtrack, which is further enhanced by the flap-controlled sports exhaust system.

A new design language for sporting appeal.

Everything about The 8’s appearance convey pure dynamism and turns the luxury coupe into a sports car brimming with passion and character. Onlookers will be greeted by the trademark hexagonal kidney grille with its elements framed by a single-piece surround. The 8 comes standard with the BMW Laserlight – the slimmest headlights of any BMW model to date.

The side view is dominated by a dramatic interplay of surfaces using sleek character lines to trace the flow of the air exiting the Air Breathers. Whilst the surfaces curve inwards of the far side of the front wheels, they flare outwards again above the rear wheels. This combines with the strikingly tapered glasshouse to create a muscular shoulder line. At the rear, the interplay of horizontal and diagonal lines emphasises the car’s width and low centre of gravity. The LED taillights add to this effect by extending deep into the flanks. Twin exhaust tailpipes with a trapezoidal contour are positioned on either side of the rear apron’s lower section.

The BMW M performance model is instantly recognisable by its exclusive exterior appointments in Cerium Grey, an M rear spoiler and illuminated door sills bearing the model name. It comes standard with an additional front spoiler to minimise the lift that occurs at the front axle at high speeds.

The 8 comes with exceptionally powerful 19” M Sport brakes along with blue painted M callipers. The standard specification for the BMW M850i xDrive coupe also includes 20” M light-alloy wheels in y-spoke style 728 M with mixed tyres. Specifically with the choice of the Sunset Orange exterior colour offering, the option for wheels in the Style 728 M in Jet Black are available.

BMW’s trademark Hofmeister kink has also been updated to a tightly-angled version.  Carried over from the concept car, The 8 features the ‘double-bubble’ which mimics the rush of air rearwards along the roof at high speeds. To reduce the aerodynamic drag of The 8’s streamlined body, it has an almost fully sealed underbody, active air flap control with adjustable kidney grille slats and Air Curtains including Air Breathers.

The modern and minimalistic exterior design language is continued inside the new BMW 8 Series Coupe, creating a relaxingly luxurious ambience. All lines point lengthways, automatically directing the gaze to the front and emphasising the focus on sporty driving. All control elements are clearly arranged. A concise surface design lets the high-quality materials really stand out. The use of trim finishers, for instance, is restricted to the sports car-style transition between the centre console and the instrument panel.

In addition to multifunction seats and the M leather steering wheel, the M Sport package include an anthracite BMW Individual headliner, M pedals, M driver’s footrest and special floor mats to inject the cabin with distinctly sporty flair.

The newly developed sports seats are upholstered as standard in Merino leather. The fulled leather trim for the door shoulders and instrument panel is also standard. Thanks to the low seating position of both rear seats, it has been possible to design the head restraints as an integral part of the backrests. The rear backrest can be split 50:50 as standard and folded down to increase the capacity of the 420-litre luggage compartment.

For the first time ever, active seat ventilation is also made available where the cooled air is sucked in from the interior then guided along the body to the seats’ built-in fans for particularly effective temperature control of the seat cushions and backrests.

Formidable power generates supreme dynamic performance.

The introduction of the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe also marks the premiere of a new V8 engine. The latest generation of the 4.4-litre eight-cylinder unit has been radically revised and optimised. Two twin-scroll turbochargers with charge air cooling located within the V-shaped space between the cylinder banks, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing all form part of the BMW M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology which generates a top speed of 250 km/h.

The BMW M850i xDrive Coupe delivers a maximum output of 390kW/530hp which is on tap between 5,500 – 6,000 rpm. The maximum torque of 750Nm is available over a wide rev range from 1,800 to 4,600 rpm for prolonged forward thrust. It can do the century sprint in merely 3.7 seconds and posts a fuel consumption of 10.4 litres per 100 kilometres.

The V8 engine is paired with the latest-generation 8-speed Steptronic Sports Transmission whose increased ratio spread, new transmission management and optimised hydraulic control produce sportier gear shifts while also enhancing its efficiency and smoothness. Shift paddles on the steering wheel are included as standard for manual gear selection.

Likewise, the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system operates more efficiently than ever before. With its rapid, precise and fully variable distribution of torque between the front and rear wheels, it maximises traction and handles stability even in highly dynamic driving situations. At the same time, the rear-biased set-up guarantees a driving experience for which BMW sports cars are renowned for. The electronically controlled rear differential lock fitted as standard on the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe gives the car an even sportier edge. The locking effect generated by an electric motor limits speed compensation between the inside and outside rear wheel when cornering, making it possible to power out of bends with eye-catching dynamic verve.

Honed on the race track.

The construction principle and tuning of The 8’s chassis are designed to harness the dynamic potential of its powertrain technology, and make best use of the car’s underlying concept to achieve maximum sports performance. Optimised weight, a low centre of gravity, well-balanced axle load distribution, ideal wheelbase length and a wide track, plus a rigid body structure and favourable aerodynamic properties provide all the right ingredients to this end.

All standard light-alloy wheels are fitted with mixed-size tyres, whose traction-enhancing effect was factored into the tuning of the chassis. The suspension technology developed for The 8 consists of a double-wishbone front axle and a shear panel fitted to the five-link rear axle which optimise stiffness and the chassis components’ connection to the body. The maximised camber settings on both axles, meanwhile, increase power transfer potential at high cornering speeds.

In addition to the Adaptive M Suspension, The 8 also comes standard with Integral Active Steering which reduces the car’s turning circle when manoeuvring, increases agility at moderate speeds and optimises poise and assurance when changing lanes and cornering at high speeds.

Unique innovations for comfort and safety.

The 8 is an extremely advanced model within its segment. Not only does it come with active cruise control with Stop & Go Function, it also offers Driving Assistant Professional as a standard. The driver assistance includes Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Warning, Pedestrian Collision Warning, Crossing Traffic Warning (front and rear), Emergency Stop Assistant, steering and lane control assistant, Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection and Evasion Aid which now reacts to pedestrians.

The BMW Live Cockpit Professional comes as standard in The 8. The latest-generation display and control concept consists of a high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel with a screen diagonal of 12.3” as well as a 10.25” Control Display which run on the new BMW Operating System 7.0. Further components of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional include an adaptive navigation system, a hard-drive based multimedia system with 20GB of memory, two USB ports, Bluetooth and WiFi interfaces.

Drivers can benefit from the car’s intelligent connectivity capabilities thanks to its built-in SIM card and the unlimited data volume, which allow them to use Intelligent Emergency Call to automatically summon swift assistance in an emergency and receive regular updates for the navigation system’s maps. Other services include Concierge Service and Remote Services.

Making its debut in The 8 is the perfect co-driver – BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, an intelligent, digital character that responds to the prompt “Hey BMW”. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant learns routines and habits, and is subsequently able to apply them in the appropriate context. In addition to ensuring there is always a genuine BMW professional on board, capable of explaining the different functions, the assistant awaits the driver’s every command, is always there to assist them and even provides casual conversation. One unique feature over other digital assistant is that drivers can give it a name, for example, “Hey Jamie”, to lend even greater individuality and personality.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will benefit from constant technical upgrades and be able to learn more preferences and favoured settings. Based on the driver’s favourite settings, it can even activate a combination of them to enhance well-being. For instance, “Hey BMW, I feel tired” triggers a vitality programme that adjusts the lighting mood, music and temperature, among other things, in order to make the driver feel more awake.

Also for the first time, The 8 features the BMW Digital Key. The Digital Key employs Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to allow the new luxury sports car to be locked and unlocked from a smartphone. The smartphone simply has to be held up to the door handle to open the door. Once inside, the engine can be started as soon as the phone has been placed in the Wireless Charging or smartphone tray. Via the BMW Connected App, the Digital Key enables the driver to share the key with up to five people.

In terms of exterior colour offering, The 8 offers selections of Carbon Black metallic, Black Sapphire metallic, Sonic Speed Blue metallic, Barcelona Blue metallic, Sunset Orange metallic and Mineral White, matched with Black, Cognac or Ivory White BMW Individual Merino full leather trim sports seat. The 8 will be available at all authorised BMW dealerships nationwide from Friday, 15th March 2019. Alternatively, visit www.bmwbethefirst.com.my to pre-book.

BMW Malaysia has introduced the BMW Product Genius Programme for the first time in the country, with seven BMW Product Geniuses having been trained and deployed successfully to three dealerships in Klang Valley.

Harald Hoelzl, Managing Director for BMW Group Malaysia said: “Conventionally, stepping into a car dealership can be an intimidating experience for customers, as they may feel pressured into making purchasing decisions before being allowed to familiarise themselves fully with the products. With this in mind, our BMW Product Geniuses are on hand to provide customers with a pressure-free experience. From these highly personalised interactions, we aim for customers to derive Sheer Driving Pleasure from the very beginning of their BMW Ownership Experience.”

BMW Product Geniuses are meticulously selected and trained within select dealerships under the close guidance of BMW Malaysia, before qualifying as BMW product and brand experts. Their role complements that of a Sales Advisor, as they are focused on acquainting customers with every aspect of the BMW vehicle portfolio, from conducting needs analyses, product presentations to facilitating test drives.

“In addition to being a friendly face, the Product Genius is equipped with the expertise to explain and demonstrate the use of each feature and function of a BMW vehicle, and offer insights on product benefits suited to a particular customer’s specific needs. Overall, BMW Product Geniuses occupy a key role as neutral customer consultants, ambassadors for the brand, and knowledge touchpoints within the dealership,” added Hoelzl.

In the pilot programme last year, the first batch of BMW Product Geniuses were successfully trained and deployed in early December to three dealerships in Klang Valley: Auto Bavaria Kuala Lumpur, Auto Bavaria Glenmarie, and Ingress Auto Damansara.

BMW Group Malaysia “charges” forward in the new year as the leading e-mobility provider in the country, unveiling six New BMW i Charging Facilities at Bangsar Shopping Centre.

Harald Hoelzl, Managing Director at BMW Group Malaysia (above) said, “2018 was a remarkable year for the BMW Group globally and we reflected this here with another year of record-breaking business performances for the eighth consecutive year with 14,338 vehicles delivered, a segment-leading growth of 13%. This reinforces Malaysia’s position as a key market in the region for the BMW Group and we are truly humbled with this achievement.”

Hoelzl added that BMW Malaysia’s portfolio of Visionary Mobility vehicles accounted for over 57% of deliveries last year with over 7,500 Plug-in Hybrid variants of BMW and MINI vehicles making their way to homes across Malaysia in 2018.

BMW AG has revealed a special one-off creation from their BMW Individual Division, the BMW 850i. And it uses pieces of an actual meteorite in its creation, yes, a friggin’ meteorite from space!

“BMW’s Individual Division has produced an exclusive one-off version of the 8-Series. The official reveal of the M850i xDrive Night Sky, BMW says, is set to coincide with an intense meteor shower due to take place on 3-4 January as Earth passes through the orbit of the asteroid 2003 EH…

… as a result, the Night Sky is filled with a range of details inspired by the extraterrestrial, many of which showcase some of the brand’s more exclusive manufacturing techniques. The most striking feature is the inclusion of real meteoritic rock: the material adorns the centre console trim plate, the start/stop button, the the gear selector (below), the top of the iDrive click wheel and the door sill inserts.” Auto Express.

“The Night Sky is mechanically identical to the regular M850i. That means power comes from a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 with 523bhp and 750Nm of torque. The price is yet to be confirmed for the M850i xDrive Night Sky, but given the unique design, expect it to be astronomical”

BMW Malaysia has  unveiled the First-Ever BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo, the new benchmark for unrivalled space, comfort, and functionality in the luxury vehicle class. Introduced in the variant badging of a BMW 630i GT, the new vehicle, which is expected to be priced at RM450,000, raises BMW Group Malaysia’s expanding portfolio of locally assembled models to nine models and eleven variants, further demonstrating the premium automaker’s commitment to growing its scale of operations and investments in Malaysia, and the country’s position as the hub for the BMW Group in the region.

Mr. Harald Hoelzl, (above) Managing Director and CEO of BMW Group Malaysia said, “The BMW 6 Series GT adds another dimension and offering to our modern luxury product portfolio. The new vehicle offers impressive functionality with a new award-winning body format and the high standards of driving comfort and spaciousness are among the features that defined the character of this distinctive vehicle type.”

Unique attributes of the previous generation are now honed to a new level in the BMW 6 Series GT, with systematic evolution particularly evident in its sporting elegance, highly advanced equipment features, innovative control and assistance systems, and a leap forward in dynamism and efficiency. The car’s new model designation reflects this progress.

“The new model will introduce a breath of fresh air to the luxury executive class, as the only vehicle in its segment that offers the spaciousness of a modern Gran Turismo, the travel comfort of a luxury class sedan, and the dynamism and aesthetic appeal that befit a large classy coupé,” added Hoelzl. Award-winning body concept – BMW EfficientLightweight with modern practicality.

The First-Ever BMW 6 Series GT received the prestigious EuroCar Body Award in 2017 for its superior body and spatial design, achieved with innovations such as the BMW EfficientLightweight technology. Specifically, the BMW 6 Series GT’s intelligent lightweight construction and increased use of aluminium and high-strength steel types for the body and chassis components helped reduce its weight by an average of approximately 150 kilograms as compared to the predecessor model.

The interior offers generous space, while the raised seating position ensures an excellent overview. Three fully-fledged seats at the rear with ample legroom emphasise the travel qualities of the car, as does the fact that the headroom has been increased in spite of a lower roof line – achieved by optimising the seat system.

The body construction allows for a large, convenient rear opening with a maximum view through the rear window. The single-section tailgate of the BMW 6 Series GT is opened and closed electrically, with a Comfort Access function that even enables hands-free operation through foot movement. The luggage compartment volume has increased by 100 litres to 610 litres compared to its predecessor: this can be expanded to 1,800 litres by folding down the seats using an electrical control function. The loading sill has also been lowered by five centimetres to the level of the luggage compartment floor.

Dynamic proportions and elegant, flowing lines.

The First-Ever BMW 6 Series GT appears with a distinctive, powerful anterior, with the lenses of the Adaptive LED headlights extending all the way to the large BMW kidney grille. BMW’s signature sporting elegance comes to the fore prominently when the car is viewed in profile, thanks to familiar features such as the long bonnet, set-back positioning of the cabin, a wheelbase of 3,070 millimetres, doors with frameless windows, an elongated window outline stretching deep into the rear end, and the trademark mirrored Hofmeister kink. The roofline sweeps down, coupe-style, to merge into a tail section that is now 64 millimetres lower in height, while the 20-inch M light-alloy double-spoke 648 M wheels in Bicolour (with mixed tyres) add polished sophistication.

The rear with its special design elements creates an even more low-slung stance without compromising comfort or luggage capacity. The sloping coupé-style rear window combines with the three-dimensional design of the LED taillights and the hallmark BMW L-shape to generate a classy sports car appeal. The low-slung silhouette also facilitates the car’s aerodynamic properties, combined with active air flap control and other measures including Air Curtains, Air Breathers and an automatically extending rear spoiler (deployed when the vehicle reaches 110 km/h) to lower the drag coefficient (Cd) from its predecessor’s 0.29 to as little as 0.25.

Dynamic handling and highly efficient new-generation engine.

Handling dynamics and driving comfort in the First-Ever BMW 6 Series GT both reap the benefits of the extensive improvements made to the chassis technology. The BMW 6 Series GT is equipped with Adaptive suspension with Dynamic Damper Control and air suspension for both axles. The electronically controlled dampers increase ride comfort and enhance the vehicle’s handling, along with wheel-specific control that counterbalances uneven loads. The two-axle air suspension allows the vehicle’s ride height to be adjusted manually, meaning that ground clearance can be increased by 20 millimetres at the touch of a button to negotiate dirt tracks or steep ramps, for example. The vehicle can also be lowered by 10 millimetres – either manually by again pushing a button, automatically when SPORT mode is engaged via the Driving Experience Control switch, or when the car’s speed exceeds 120 km/h, in order to reduce drag.

Under the bonnet, the cutting-edge TwinPower Turbo engine is teamed up with the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit in the First-Ever BMW 6 Series GT delivers a maximum output of 190 kW/258 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm. The increase in power and the superior efficiency of the new engine, together with aerodynamic improvements, endows the car with a top speed of 250km/h while optimising fuel economy. It sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds, and posts combined fuel consumption of 6.6 litres per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions of 152 grams per kilometre.

Generous, luxurious and versatile interior.

The First-Ever BMW 6 Series GT has been designed to provide a driver-focused cockpit, with impeccable ergonomic arrangement of the controls, and a display and control system offering unparalleled versatility for operating vehicle, navigation, communication and infotainment functions. At the heart of it all is the iDrive system, complete with the Touch Controller on the centre console and the Control Display, now in the form of a freestanding touchscreen. The high-resolution display has a screen diagonal of 10.25 inches, while its tile-style menu layout with animated graphics in live mode facilitates intuitive operation.

The BMW 6 Series GT also offers the convenience of both enhanced voice control and BMW Gesture Control, as well as the new-generation BMW Head-Up Display. The M Sport Steering Wheel, Sensatec Leather dashboard, and Fine Wood ‘Fineline’ Ridge with Pearl Gloss Chrome complete the stylish look and feel for a premium driving experience. The extremely spacious passenger compartment comes with even more comfort in the form of optimised noise insulation as well as a two-part Panoramic glass roof. The latter has a length of slightly over one metre and a width of 90 centimetres, for an increased sense of space and a light-flooded interior. To top it off, the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System provides an outstanding listening experience.

Driver assistance systems that smooth the way to automated driving.

The driver assistance systems fitted in the BMW 6 Series GT make use of the stereo camera, including radar and ultrasonic sensors to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings. Innovative functions for semi-autonomous driving enhance convenience and safety by coming to the driver’s assistance with corrective steering inputs or warnings, such as Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Warning, Collision and Pedestrian Warning with City Collision Mitigation, Crossing Traffic Warning, and Speed Limit Info. The driving assistance features also include the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function which helps to keeps a constant distance from the vehicle ahead at all times.

BMW ConnectedDrive: Intelligently connected with the digital world.

Owners of the First-Ever BMW 6 Series GT can enjoy the benefits of BMW ConnectedDrive, a digital personal mobility assistant to help drivers reach their destination easily and with minimal stress – and not only when they are in their cars. For instance, calendar entries from a smartphone can be used for route planning, the ideal departure time can be calculated and the navigation destination can be transferred to the owner’s car.

A new smartphone holder is also integrated into the centre console, which allows wireless, inductive charging for mobile phones as well as the display key, further demonstrating the BMW Connected philosophy of the use of technology for convenience.

In terms of colour offering, the First-Ever BMW 6 Series GT offers the exterior colour selections of Alpine White, Bluestone, Carbon Black and Sophisto Grey matched with the interior colour offering of Leather Dakota Black. Specifically with the Carbon Black and Sophisto Grey colour options, the added option of Leather Dakota Cognac is also possible. The First-Ever BMW 6 Series GT will be available at all authorised BMW dealerships nationwide from Saturday, 8th September 2018.

Complete Premium Ownership Experience.

Owners of the First-Ever BMW 6 Series GT can also experience the complete BMW Group Malaysia Premium Ownership experience which includes:

  • BMW 5-Year Unlimited Mileage Warranty with Free Scheduled Service Program.
  • BMW 2-Year/ 24 Month Tyre Warranty Program for its Run Flat Tyre offering and services.
  • BMW Roadside Assistance and Accident Hotline.
  • The BMW Group Loyalty+ Mobile App – BMW White Card.

Hot from Auto Express, the new BMW Z4 – which was developed in tandem with the new Toyota Supra – is set to go on sale next spring. Following leaks, teasers and even an early prototype drive, the all-new BMW Z4 has been officially revealed. It debuts at the Pebble Beach Concours event in the United States ahead of sales starting in spring 2019. Here’s its maiden debut at Pebble Beach recently…

Codenamed G29, the new roadster has been developed in a joint project with Toyota, although the two models to emerge from the shared process – the Z4 and the Japanese firm’s Supra – will be substantially different. BMW’s offering will be a convertible only; the Toyota will be sold as a coupe.

The car’s looks and proportions stick pretty closely to those previewed on a concept that was revealed at the same American event last year. There’s a particularly short overhang at the front end, and a visible decrease in wheelbase compared with the outgoing Z4. Here’s another video of its premiere…

The images also confirm that this Z4 has a folding fabric roof (it opens in around 10 seconds), eschewing the aluminium hard-top of the outgoing generation on grounds of complexity, cost and weight. The new car’s total kerb weight is said to be around 50kg lighter than its predecessor’s.

The model unveiled in Pebble Beach is the Z4 M40i First Edition, described by BMW as “a taster of the forthcoming on-road debut of the new roadster”. It’s powered by a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine, producing 340bhp – enough to take the new drop-top from 0-100kmh in 4.6 seconds.

BMW is being coy on releasing many technical details – they’re being held back until late September – but the firm has confirmed that M40i edition has electronically controlled dampers, upgraded M Sport brakes and an M Sport differential. It also says the Z4 will have a 50:50 weight distribution.

The line-up of powertrains is likely to include a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol, possibly in a couple of states of tune, along with at least one more version of the straight six. We’d expected a plug-in hybrid version to follow later in the car’s life, too – and there could even be a fully focused M version of the car, because BMW hopes a more involving dynamic experience will allow the Z4 to grab some sales from the Porsche 718 Boxster.

The cabin shows a further evolution of BMW’s cockpit layout, with a newly designed fully digital instrument panel, and a ‘fared-in’ infotainment system that’s clearly angled towards the driver. The usual iDrive rotary controller is mounted on the centre tunnel beside the controller for what is likely to be an eight-speed automatic transmission. A manual gearbox is likely to be offered too, Auto Express understands, but only with selected engines.

The Z4 is due on sale in the UK next spring. There’s no word on pricing or specs, but we’d expect the range to start with 2.0-litre models at around £30,000, rising to around £48,000 for the M40i seen here.

Ed’s note: Nice one BMW, however, I think it looks a little too much like something Fiat came up with in 2015, the 124 Spider… anyway, please revive the Z8 next! – Chris Wee.
