Mercedes-Benz Malaysia today introduces the latest variant of the best-selling C-Class: the Mercedes-Benz C 350 e Plug-in Hybrid. Proudly assembled at the production plant in Pekan, the C 350 e Plug-in Hybrid seamlessly combines electric power with traditional fuel for enhanced efficiency.

The Mercedes-Benz C 350 e Plug-in Hybrid perfectly integrates performance, efficiency, and sustainability with its advanced powertrain specifications. The 1,999 cc engine powers this innovative vehicle, delivering a rated output of 204hp at 6,100 rpm, paired with a robust torque of 320Nm spanning from 2,000 to 4,000 rpm. This four-cylinder petrol engine ensures a dynamic driving experience.

Augmenting the combustion engine is an electric motor with a rated output of 95 kW and a torque of 440 Nm, contributing to a harmonious blend of power sources. This integration results in an impressive max. rated power system output of 313hp and a peak torque of 550Nm at the rated power system output, ensuring a compelling performance. Notably, the C 350 e boasts an electric range of up to 117 km (WLTP), affirming its commitment to sustainable mobility.

The vehicle’s high-voltage (HV) battery, with an energy content of 25.4 kWh provides substantial electric range for a variety of journeys. Acceleration from 0 to 100km/h is achieved in just 6.1 seconds, showcasing the agility and responsiveness of the C 350 e, while a top speed of 245km/h adds versatility to its capabilities. Meticulously engineered and thoughtfully designed, the Mercedes-Benz C 350 e Plug-in Hybrid stands as a testament to modern automotive technology, offering a harmonious balance between performance, efficiency, and an impressive electric driving range.

The high-voltage (HV) battery has been developed in-house by Mercedes-Benz AG. It is part of a fourth-generation family of batteries and represents a logical evolution of the previous generation. It consists of 96 cells in a so-called pouch configuration. To account for the high energy density, the HV battery has an internal cooling system. The thermal management system can therefore control the operating temperature irrespective of the climate control in the vehicle interior. A standard-fit 11 kW charger is available for three-phase charging at a Wallbox connected to the domestic AC mains. Included with the C 350 e is a mode 2 charging cable.

The positioning of the battery in the vehicle brings advantages on a day-to-day basis compared with the previous model: there is no longer a step in the boot, and through-loading is now possible.

The new C-Class is even more dynamic, thanks to its AMG Line styling, featuring the iconic Mercedes-Benz pattern grille with the star design in chrome with 18-inch AMG 5-spoke light-alloy wheels. Night Package includes sporty, expressive design elements in high-gloss black such as the louvre of the radiator shell, trim moulding in the AMG front apron, beltline trim strip and window surround, and exterior mirror housings.

Other key exterior highlights include DIGITAL LIGHT, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, panoramic sliding sunroof, and ambient lighting with projection of brand logo. The rear-end design is typical of a Mercedes-Benz saloon. The high-quality design of the tail lamps fascinates with an unmistakable day and night appearance. 

The new C-Class features an AMG Line interior with metal structure trim elements, multifunction sports steering wheel in nappa leather, and AMG floor mats. The ARTICO man-made leather upholstery in black and instrument panel and beltlines in ARTICO man-made leather in nappa look further accentuates the sense of comfort in the cabin.  

The high-resolution 12.3-inch LCD screen and 11.9-inch touchscreen central display are slightly tilted towards the driver by six degrees. The vehicle is also equipped with the latest generation of MBUX multimedia system making the interior more digital and intelligent. 

Other cabin highlights include sport seats, fingerprint scanner, front wireless charging, ambient lighting and smartphone integration package. With safety in mind, the new C-Class features 360° camera, Blind Spot Assist, Active Brake Assist, and GUARD 360 ° Vehicle protection.

All in all, the driving experience is significantly more electric. In view of the increase in electric range of up to 117 kilometres (WLTP), drivers will be able to cover most everyday journeys under electric power alone. The energy recovery function allows kinetic energy to be recuperated during deceleration or downhill driving, a process that has now also been improved in interaction with the hydraulic brake. The energy recovery output is now over 100 kW. The intelligent, route-based operating strategy activates the electric driving mode where this is most appropriate for the route. It takes into account such factors as navigation data, topography, speed limits and the traffic conditions for the entire planned route. A driver wishing to influence the energy recovery rate can do so directly in three stages controlled by rocker switches behind the steering wheel. This is possible in all driving modes except SPORT. In the driving mode D-, for example, the driver can experience the “one-pedal feeling”: When the driver takes his foot off the accelerator the vehicle slows down, purely by electric means, to such an extent that the hydraulic foot brake is often not needed.

The operating strategy communicates with the sensors of the assistance systems and thus efficiently supports the driver in many driving situations. Over longer distances in urban areas, for instance, the car will prioritise electric driving. With the BATTERY HOLD driving mode, maintaining the charge state of the high-voltage battery is given priority, for example when intending to drive in a city center; selection of the most suitable drive configuration by the hybrid powertrain system, depending on the driving situation and route.

The new C-Class has a haptic accelerator pedal module with a pressure point at an accelerator pedal angle of 9.7°. In ELECTRIC mode, this power surge is activated and allows all-electric vehicle operation up to the additional pressure point. If the pressure point is overridden, the combustion engine starts and delivers additional torque.

Six months after introducing the latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W206), Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) has launched the locally-assembled version. As with other models assembled in Malaysia, the new C-Class comes from the brand’s facility in Pekan, Pahang.

Two versions of the sedan are offered – the C200 Avantgarde priced from RM287,888 (excluding insurance) and the C300 AMG Line from RM327,888 (without insurance). Local assembly naturally saves money and unlike some cases, there doesn’t seem to be any significant difference in the features and equipment compared to the CBU versions we saw earlier.

Both models are powered by 4-cylinder turbocharged engines, the C200 having a 1.5-litre displacement and an output of 204 ps/300 Nm, while the C300’s 2-litre engine produces 258 ps/400 Nm. Both engines get additional assistance with the integrated starter generator which can add 15 kW (equivalent to 20 ps) and 200 Nm to the output for brief periods. The same 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission with 9 speeds is used to deliver power to the rear wheels.

The classic sedan form that has characterised the C-Class is maintained with a more modernised appearance that has sporty elements. The C200’s Avantgarde line features include the radiator grille design with central Mercedes star as well as elegant trim strips in high-sheen aluminium and chrome with 18-inch 5-spoke wheels.

For the C300 with AMG Line, the grille incorporates the star design in chrome. To distinguish this version are LED High Performance headlamps with Adaptive High Beam Assist, 19-inch AMG multi spoke wheels and a panoramic sunroof is standard.

The rear ends of both models are similar, but this generation has had more attention given to the tail lamp units. For the first time in a C-Class, they have a 2-piece design, with the light functions divided between the side wall and bootlid lamps.

For this new generation, the interior has influences from the latest S-Class so its image is elevated. Notable features in the cabin are the high-resolution 12.3-inch free-standing display, which makes a difference from traditional cockpits with the classic round meters. The touchscreen appears to float above the expanse of trim and is slightly tilted towards the driver for easier viewing.

The dashboard is divided into an upper and a lower section. Above the wing-like section are a trio of  flattened round vents reminiscent of aircraft engine nacelles. The tablet-like central display flows down to the centre console which has a rear padded section for the armrest and a front section in lustrous jet black, divided by a chrome insert.

As with every new Mercedes-Benz in recent times, the new C-Class comes with MBUX and includes MBUX Navigation Premium. The MBUX multimedia system has extended functions and comes with a LTE module to connect to Mercedes me, the app that allows the owner to interact with his car. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make it possible to transfer favourite apps like Spotify or Waze onto the display screen and use them from there.

The system also has a fingerprint scanner but this is not used for security. Instead, it is used to retrieve stored profiles of different occupants (usually the driver) with regards to their personal preferences such as seat and steering adjustments, air-conditioning settings and even the ambient lighting levels.

Besides the advanced driver assistance systems to help the driver’s awareness and intervention when action is not taken to avoid an accident, there is also an emergency call (e-call) system. This will send a message to a control centre to notify of a possible accident when sensors detect a severe impact and deployment of the airbags. This could bring rescuers faster and make a difference in saving a life.

Each new C-Class comes with the URBAN GUARD vehicle protection package which is a security system for the car that can be helpful on recovering it if stolen. This makes use of the Mercedes me app and besides the usual security systems, it is also possible to deactivate the car keys preventing their use to start the engine. There is also visualisation with camera images to identify possible cause of parking damage.

For those interested in buying the new C-Class, Mercedes-Benz Financial has various financing plans starting from RM2,388 per month (for the C200). Additionally, there’s a MobilityPlus programme with a guaranteed temporary Mercedes-Benz replacement car if the car is retained by the service centre for 48 hours or more.

The fifth generation of what was once the entry-level model of Mercedes-Benz (until the A-Class came along) has made its debut in Malaysia. It’s the new C-Class (W206) is initially being imported as a CBU (completely built-up) import with locally-assembled versions coming from the plant in Pahang later in the year.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia offers two variants of the best-selling Mercedes-Benz model of the last 10 years – the C 200 Avantgarde Line priced from RM288,334 and C 300 AMG Line priced from RM330, 681. The prices exclude insurance premiums and 50% of the sales tax applicable. While the locally-assembled versions will have lower prices, they will likely not enjoy full sales tax exemption if the government does not extend the provision past June 30, 2022.

‘Baby S-Class’
Presented as a ‘baby S-Class’, the new C-Class takes many styling elements – outside as well as inside – and technology from the brand’s flagship model which was launched in Malaysia last December. It retains the sporty profile with a short front overhang, long wheelbase and rear overhang and ‘cab-backward’ design. Though the top of the engine is flat, there are ‘power domes’ on the bonnet which complement the performance image and provide an impression of forward motion.

The brand’s hallmark radiator grille has the same layout for both variants but differs in details. With the C 200 having Avantgarde line trim, the highlights are in the form of elegant vertical trim strips in high-sheen aluminium and chrome. For the C 300 which has AMG Line trim, the Mercedes-Benz pattern grille has star designs in chrome.

The headlight shapes on the new model have a similarity with those on the S-Class but do not have the advanced DIGITAL LIGHT system. Nevertheless, they are still LED high-performance units with adaptive capability to maximise the lighting distance, rather than just automatically switching between high and low beams when other vehicles approach. The rear units also use LEDs for reduced energy consumption and longer life.

The wheels also differ in size, with the C 200 having an 18-inch size and 5 spokes while the C 300 is fitted with 19-inch AMG multi-spoke wheels. While the C 200 comes with run-flat tyres as standard, the C 300 does not and owners instead get a TIREFIT kit. This kit comes with a sealant to seal punctures of up to 4 mm and there is also an inflator powered from the 12V cigarette lighter socket. As with run-flat tyres, Mercedes-Benz advises drivers to travel at not more than 80 km/h when the tyre is repaired, and the sealant should be replaced with a new bottle after 4 years.

The rear-end design will immediately identify the new model as a Mercedes-Benz sedan with its familiar form. The tail lamps, for the first time, have a 2-piece design, with the light functions divided between the side and boot lid elements which curve around the corners. Attention to detail, like on the front units. can be seen in the silver-grey diamond-pattern trim.

Slightly longer body
Compared to the previous generation, the new C-Class has grown in overall length with an increase of 65 mm, while the wheelbase has gained 25 mm. However, the body width is almost the same as before, with just a 10 mm difference and the roofline is 9 mm closer to the road. Out of curiosity, we looked at the dimensions of the original ‘baby Benz’ – the W201 190 of 1982 – and it has an overall length of 4420 mm which is 331 mm shorter, and a wheelbase of 2665 mm, which was 200 mm less. It was also much narrower – 1678 mm versus 1820 mm for the latest model.

While Mercedes-Benz is among the carmakers at the forefront of electrification of products, it is also doing so with a ‘needs-based’ approach that will take into account the fact that different markets will require different levels of electrification in cars. Not all will be able to make the immediate jump to full electrification for some time to come. With the C-Class being sold so widely, its powertrains have to be suited to such conditions with some degree of electrification.

Mild hybrid powertrains
The new C-Class engines now have an integrated starter-generator (ISG) for intelligent assistance at low engine speeds as a mild hybrid of the second generation. The ISG uses a 48-volt on-board electrical system that ensures functions such as gliding, boosting or energy recovery, and makes significant fuel savings possible. The engines also start very rapidly and comfortably as a result, so that the start/stop function is almost as imperceptible to the driver as the transition from gliding with the engine switched off to strong acceleration under engine power.

With the second-generation starter-generator, the engine gets additional output of up to 15 kW and 200 Nm more torque. A completely new feature is the segment charger with flow connection, an advancement of the twin-scroll technology for even more instantaneous response of the forced induction system. The technology for this new turbocharger comes from the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 team, showing how motorsport can benefit production cars.

The output from the C 200 engine with a 1.5-litre displacement is 204 ps/300 Nm while the C 300, which has a 2-litre displacement, produces 258 ps/400 Nm. For short periods, the output of the C 300 can additionally be increased by up to 20 kW (27 ps) with overboost.

The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission has been adapted for optimum performance with the ISG, and is installed in both variants. It uses a new generation of the fully integrated transmission control with multi-core processor and new design and connectivity technology. In addition to the increased computing power, the number of electric interfaces has been significantly reduced, and the weight of the transmission controls have been cut by 30% compared with the predecessor.

The key components of the new, dynamically configured suspension are a new 4-link axle at the front and a multi-link axle at the rear mounted to a subframe. For the Malaysian market, both variants come with AGILITY CONTROL suspension with a selective damping system.

More space for rear occupants
The interior designers have used the extra length of the new body to provide additional space for the occupants at the rear. The layout of the dashboard follows the common theme of the more rennet models with a standalone 11.9-inch touchscreen display panel at the centre and a slim 12.3-inch screen that shows the instruments and driving information. The dashboard is divided into an upper and a lower section, with new, flattened round vents reminiscent of aircraft engine nacelles.

The portrait orientation of the centre display is said to be advantageous for navigation and includes a fingerprint scanner to quickly and conveniently identify the owner (or designated user). This keeps personal data such as profiles or other information protected. The fingerprint scanner is located in a convenient location below the central display. As part of a one-time process, it records the distinctive biometric features of up to two random fingers per user. Therefore no one is able to observe a number combination, which could happen with PIN entry.

The instrument panel display can be individualized with three styles (Discreet, Sporty, and Classic) and three modes (Navigation, Assistance, Service). In ‘Sporty’, for example, red is the predominant colour and the tachometer has a dynamic design. Selection is easy with controls on the steering wheel. The new display aesthetic was developed for the S-Class and is now adapted for other models like the new C-Class.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has also included Augmented Video as standard equipment in the new  C-Class. Using a camera which registers the surroundings in front of the vehicle, moving images are shown on the central display. In addition, virtual objects, information and markers are superimposed on the video image. These include directional arrows, lane-change recommendations and more. This can make navigation much easier, especially in urban areas.

The modern, highly reduced design of door panels frames both ends of the dashboard. The door centre panel with an integrated armrest evolves from a vertical surface into a horizontal orientation. Reflecting the design of the centre console, the front section takes the form of a metallic high-tech element. It can be used as a grab or closing handle, and houses the power window controls. Another highlight is the floating control cluster, into which the door opener and seat adjustment controls are integrated.

The design of seats (Comfort for the C 200 and Sports for the C 300) are worth mentioning as well. They have layers and enveloping surfaces to create a visual impression of lightness. The head restraints are also a completely new design and are attached to the backrest with a sealed piece of trim under which the adjustment mechanism is located.

More intelligent 2nd generation MBUX
With every new Mercedes-Benz model, the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) interface is highlighted and for the new C-Class, this is a second generation system. The hardware and software have been advanced, while the voice assistant ‘Hey Mercedes’ is more interactive and has learning capabilities. In some cases, it does not need the activation keywords and can explains vehicle functions as well. So for those who never bother to read the Owner’s Manual (and many people don’t), the information can be obtained just by asking the on-board ‘assistant’.

With the Spotify and Apple Music services, Mercedes-Benz has now fully integrated the major music streaming services into the MBUX infotainment system. MBUX enables seamless access to the personal user profile at the linked music provider. This gives owners convenient access to a huge library of songs and curated playlists.

Though in the lower rungs of the Mercedes-Benz range, the C-Class still gets safety systems that are fairly advanced in the Driving Assistance Package. Besides helping the driver avoid an accident or reduce its damaging effects, the systems can also reduce driver workload in daily driving. A less tired driver will be more alert, reducing the risk of an accident.

For the latest C-Class, the usual active systems are present and work in an integrated manner using data and imagery from a camera and radar. Some systems will provide alerts while others will automatically brake the car if the driver does not act correctly to prevent a collision.

As with other Mercedes-Benz models for many years now, the C-Class can also park by itself with the driver only controlling the engine power. This is done by Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC and only works with parallel parking.

The C-Class success story began in 1982 with the W201 and being the smallest model in the Mercedes-Benz range, it was referred to as the ‘Baby Benz’. Prior to 1993, it was designated as the 190 model with various engine sizes, including a powerful 2.5-litre 16-valve unit. From 1993 onwards, it became the C-Class in line with the brand’s new model designations. In the last decade, the C-Class has been the highest-volume Mercedes-Benz model sold, with over 10.5 million cars delivered worldwide.

The term ‘dual-purpose’ vehicle started appearing in the late 1970s when 4×4 vehicles got more ‘civilized’ and people began to use them like passenger cars. Then came ‘SUVs’ in the 1990s, followed by ‘crossovers’ in the following decade. Now comes another type of dual-purpose vehicle for those who find a conventional stationwagon less than suitable off-road, but an SUV or crossover is too tall and bulky.

It’s the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class All-Terrain with extra ground clearance than a regular C-Class stationwagon. It’s not a new idea though as Volvo did the same thing with its stationwagon many years ago to create Cross-Country versions that could be used in rougher conditions.

More ‘off-roader’ look
The off-road C-Class is differentiated by a distinctive radiator grille, different bumpers, a simulated chrome guard plate at the front and rear and the wheelarch linings in matt dark grey. At the rear, there is a multi-section bumper with a chrome-plated load sill guard.

As the All-Terrain version has an AVANTGARDE exterior, the waistline trim, side window surrounds and roof railings are finished in polished aluminium. The trim on the B-pillars and the bars on the rear side windows are in high-gloss black. The Night Package is also available, changing many items to high-gloss black.

Compared to the regular C-Class stationwagon, the All-Terrain has marginally increased dimensions – 4 mm longer and 21 mm wider, the latter due to the exaggerated wheelarch linings. Of significance is the increased ground clearance of around 40 mm, which has also increased the car’s height to 1,494 mm. The standard tyres are 225/55 on 7.5J x 17 wheels, and customers can also opt to fit 18-inch or 19-inch wheels with wider tyres.

Intelligent DIGITAL LIGHT
The C-Class has LED High Performance headlamps as standard and the DIGITAL LIGHT system from the new S-Class can be chosen as an option. For the All-Terrain, it includes a special off-road light. When driving on light terrain, wide illumination ensures that the driver can see obstacles sooner, even when cornering. As soon as the off-road driving mode is activated, the off-road light switches on and remains active up to 50 km/h.

DIGITAL LIGHT has a light module with three extremely powerful LEDs in each headlamp, whose light is refracted and directed by 1.3 million micro-mirrors. The resolution is therefore more than 2.6 million pixels per vehicle. This allows almost unlimited possibilities for a high-resolution light distribution that adapts to road conditions.

However, the deciding factor is not only the technology in the headlamp, but rather the digital intelligence behind it. An onboard camera and sensor systems detect other road users, with the data being evaluated by powerful computers in milliseconds. Depending on the conditions (including references to maps), the headlamps will have adjustments made to the light distribution.

Two electrified engine choices
Petrol or diesel engines are available. The 4-cylinder petrol engine has an integrated second-generation starter-generator (ISG) is used and can use electrical energy to briefly increased output by up to 20 bhp. The 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine is part of a mild hybrid drive system. It too has an integrated second-generation starter-generator and uses a 48V electrical system. Electrification allows the use of an electric refrigerant compressor for the air conditioning system.

As would be expected, the All-Terrain has standard 4MATIC all-wheel drive that will provide more traction and driving stability when going on rough or slippery surfaces. Up to 45% of engine power flows to the front axle, and up to 55% to the rear axle, the ratio varying according to the grip of the wheels. Together with the 4MATIC drive system is a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Besides the usual modes in the DYNAMIC SELECT system that offers pre-determined driving programmes, there are two more modes for use when driving in off-road conditions. OFFROAD is programmed for easy terrain such as dirt roads, gravel or sand; OFFROAD+ with DSR (Downhill Speed Regulation) is recommended for somewhat rougher and steeper terrain. DYNAMIC SELECT adapts the characteristics of the engine, transmission, steering, ESP and 4MATIC, with the modes selectable even when on the move.

The new front-axle drive allows higher torque levels to be transferred with an ideal axle load distribution for driving dynamics. Moreover, this has a significant weight advantage compared to the corresponding component in the preceding series – a contribution to CO2 reduction. The engineers were also able to reduce the friction losses in the new transfer case and a closed oil circuit is used with no additional cooling measures needed.

The suspension is basically the same as the regular C-Class, but the 4-link front suspension has slightly larger steering knuckles for addition robustness. A multi-link suspension mounted on a rear axle carrier is installed at the rear. The suspension has a passive damping system with the damping effect constantly adapting to the road surface, depending on the amplitude. Ride comfort can be improved by reducing the damping effect, and when the shocks are more severe, the full damping action ensures more stability.

Same interior as regular C-Class
The interior of the All-Terrain is similar to that of a regular C-Class stationwagon, with the occupants benefiting from the moderately increased exterior dimensions of the new model generation. Compared to the predecessor, the elbow width has been increased by 22 mm for the driver and front passenger and by 15 mm for the rear passengers. There is 11 mm more headroom in the rear, plus increased kneeroom of up to 35 mm.

In terms of digitality and quality, the latest C-Class interior now has highlights such as the display and operating concept adopted from the new S-Class, with a sporty interpretation. Compared to the previous C-Class generation, the latest one has a Driving Assistance Package with additional and advanced functions. These reduce driver workload in day-to-day situations, for more comfortable and safe driving.

The C-Class All-Terrain will have its official global debut at the International Motor Show in Munich, Germany next month, with the first cars reaching showrooms later this year.

An enhanced C 200 Coupe AMG Line has arrived at showrooms of authorised Mercedes-Benz dealerships in Malaysia. While ‘enhanced’ often refers only to cosmetic changes, for this model, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has also installed a new 2-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine delivering 204 bhp/300 Nm. Compared to the previous 1.5-litre EQ Boost engine, the increase in  output is 20 bhp/20 Nm, with all 300 Nm available from 1,600 rpm.

The exterior appearance of the car is given a sporty, expressive character with the AMG Line accessories. The diamond radiator grille, integrated with the 3-pointed star and pins in chrome plus an AMG-specific front apron with new geometry, gives it a bold presentation.

Black trim elements in the AMG rear apron accentuate the LED rear lamps, while 18-inch AMG 5-spoke light-alloy wheels are powerful elements in the styling.

The inside of the C 200 Coupe also has AMG Line features. These include ARTICO leather upholstery, multifunction sports steering wheel in Nappa leather, galvanized steering wheel gearshift paddles, AMG sports pedals and AMG floormats.

The driver now has the services of Mercedes me connect which adds more convenience to the ownership experience. The connected car service can be used to unlock the car, start the engine remotely, or simply check the fuel level. And of course, the app also assists in vehicle maintenance and scheduling servicing.

Other features of Mercedes me connect – which can connect from anywhere in the world that there is internet service – include Mercedes–Benz emergency call system (eCall), remote vehicle diagnostics, pre-entry climate control, predictive navigation, and parked vehicle locator.

Pricing for the new C 200 Coupe AMG Line starts from RM336,129.38 (excluding insurance) , with sales tax exempted for the rest of 2020. Buyers who require financing can consider Agility Financing which starts from RM4,288 per month (terms and conditions apply) with perks such as lower monthly instalments, flexible end-of-agreement options, a guaranteed future value of the car and a MobilityPlus replacement car programme.

Before Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) started to import AMG-developed and upgraded models, it offered customers variants of popular models with AMG accessories installed. These variants gained an added touch of sportiness and customers benefitted from having genuine accessories for which there was a warranty as well.

The latest of such variants is the Mercedes-Benz C 200 AMG Line. According to Michael Jopp, Vice-President Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, the current C-Class has been one of the best sellers in the local Mercedes-Benz range, with more than 20,000 units sold since its introduction in 2014.

“The localised C-Class itself has been well-accepted by our customers. As part of our continuous commitment to the local market, the premium mid-sized limousine model, the C 200 is upgraded with AMG line together with a host of enhancement including an even more dynamic engine, sports suspension, state-of-the-art digital infotainment system and Mercedes me connect. This model will further cater to the individual requirements of our esteemed customers,” he said.

Sportier, expressive character
The exterior appearance of the AMG Line C 200 gains a sporty and expressive character with the new diamond radiator grille integrated with the Mercedes star and pins in chrome, the AMG front apron with sporty air intake and chrome trim element and the AMG diffuser-look rear apron with insert in black. Specially for this new variant are 18-inch AMG 5-spoke light-alloy wheels.

Under the bonnet is the new 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that produces more power with a maximum output of 204 bhp/300 Nm. With a 9-speed 9G-TRONIC transmission, the claimed 0 to 100 km/h time is 7.1 seconds and the car can reach a top speed of 250 km/h.

On the inside, the C 200 AMG Line has ARTICO leather upholstery, galvanised steering wheel gearshift paddles and AMG sports pedals.

Motoring life easier with Mercedes me
The connected service known as Mercedes me available (registration required using the app) makes the lives of owners easier, whether it is unlocking/locking the car, starting the engine remotely, getting customer support or even check their fuel level. Other features of Mercedes me include Mercedes–Benz emergency call system (eCall), remote vehicle diagnostics, pre-entry climate control, predictive navigation, and parked vehicle locator.

Predicting accidents and getting prepared
Besides the usual safety systems, the C 200 AMG Line also has Active Brake Assist, PRE-SAFE and Blind Spot Assist. The Active Brake Assist system helps to minimise the effects of a rear-end collision, while the PRE-SAFE system monitors the situation ahead and take the necessary action if an accident is likely. If an accident is imminent, the system tightens the front seatbelts, adjusts front head restraints and even closes windows if they are open.

There’s also Blind Spot Assist system, an active safety feature which is available in many cars these days. It monitors the areas on the left and right side of the car (towards the rear) which are not visible to the driver. If a vehicle is detected, a red triangle appears in the relevant door mirror. If the driver attempts to make a turn or change lanes – which the system detects by the activation of the signal lights – a warning sound will come on. The system only becomes active from 30 km/h and remains active up to the vehicle’s maximum speed.

The C 200 AMG Line is available at authorised Mercedes-Benz dealers nationwide with the price starting from RM251,587.39. This price is with no sales tax (since the model is assembled locally) and should be valid till the end of the year unless MBM has a price adjustment.

Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class has been hnoured at the first ever BusinessCar awards. It won the ‘Best Premium Car’ title while its bigger brother the S-Class, was named the winner of the ‘Best Luxury Car’ category.

According to the automaker, both of its models received their respective accolades due to exceptional comfort levels, technology and competitive monthly running costs. Adding to that, the S-Class also had a ‘luxurious and unrivaled interior’ something that isn’t said often due to the relatively stiff competition faced at this side of the segment.

Regarding this, Rob East, Head of Fleet, Mercedes-Benz Cars UK, said, “Both the C-Class and S-Class are perfect examples of what Mercedes-Benz does best, combining unbeatable comfort with competitive running costs, plus excellent interior quality. It’s great to see these strengths being recognised by key members of the Fleet industry.”

The editor of BusinessCar stated that the reason that the C-Class trounced the competition was due to the fact that it had set a high bar when it came to comfort, tech and efficiencies, as well as having strong residual value. This means that on paper at least, buying a C-Class over other rival models makes more sense from a consumer’s prespective.

In recent years, Mercedes-Benz has been producing some of the best cars the automotive world has to offer. The styling of the new models are pretty clean and attractive, which is complemented by equally sophisticated and forward-thinking tech. This combination has allowed the German based automaker to bag awards from different competitions.

This momentum doesn’t seem to be ending soon as the automaker has revealed plans and concept vehicles that might turn the automotive world upside down. One thing is for sure, This level of competition could only mean one thing, the cars that will be made available soon, will offer us more bang-per-buck than in previous years.
