ZEEKR, a brand in the Geely group dedicated to EVs, has set two new Guinness World Records for electric cars – one for the fastest drift and the other for the fastest through a slalom. The records were achieved less than a year since the brand started delivering cars to customers in China.
The fastest EV drift requires the vehicle to achieve greater than 160 km/h and the 001 model was able to reach a maximum speed of 207.996 km/h. The EV has a high-performance dual electric drive powertrain which generates instantaneous torque of up to 7,680 Nm. It is capable of going from standstill to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.
Of course, when you hit such a high speed and put the car sideways, superior control is needed and ZEEKR says that the 001’s high-performance chassis suspension system maximizes body stability so the driver can maintain consistent and precise drifting right on the edge of the performance envelope.
For the second record, the 001 weaved between 50 cones equally spaced and completed the course, without touching or knocking any down, in 49.05 seconds. The stability and precision were maximized by the electric 4-wheel drive, with the intelligent power distribution and the balance between the front and rear wheels allowing the 001 to switch directions qucikly as it travelled at high speed around each cone .
The records were set recently under the supervision of an adjudicator from the Guinness World Records organization at the CATARC proving ground in China.
Ken Block is well known for his thrilling, heart-stopping gymkhana series of videos where he has pushed Fords and then Subarus to extreme limits to entertain viewers. Earlier this year, he parted company with Ford and teamed up with a new carmaker – Audi. So he can now say he’s worked with American, Japanese and now German carmakers… maybe one day with Chinese or Korean too?
A new Hoonitron
His move to Audi is going to see him drive not just another specially prepared car with a powerful engine. In fact, it will be a major change for him as he will be doing his driving sideways using electric power. Audi has developed a special S1 e-tron quattro ‘Hoonitron’ for the American drift specialist and with this car, a new video (the working title is ‘Elektrikana’)will be produced which we will see sometime in the first quarter of 2022.
New interpretation of Pikes Peak car
The entire development, including the technology, of the S1 Hoonitron was conducted by Audi Sport at its own facility. Audi Design was responsible for the styling, which has been anything but a run-of-the-mill job for the design team. The challenges were tremendous as they aimed to create a modern, all-electric interpretation of the legendary quattro S1 Pikes Peak car. This car, evolved from the successful World Rally Championship-dominating cars, raced to the summit in the famous Pikes Peak Hill Climb in America, boosting the level of performance in the event much higher.
The S1 Hoonitron has two powerful electric motors and all-wheel drive, a carbonfibre chassis, and the full safety standards as prescribed by the FIA. How Audi Sport has boosted output from the motors to give Block the kind of power he will need for his tyre-smoking stunts remains a secret.
A new experience going electric
Last month, he got to know the car for the first time. “Audi gave me the opportunity to test it for a few days in Germany,” he revealed. “I’m familiar with a wide variety of cars using internal combustion engines and transmissions, but there were a lot of new things for me to learn here. Spinning into a donut at 150 km/h directly from standstill – just using my right foot – is an all-new experience for me! Our work was focused on getting the car and I used to each other. My thanks go to the whole Audi Sport squad for their outstanding teamwork.”
“The S1 Hoonitron combines a lot of what Audi was already famous for in the 1980s,” added Block. “For instance, the car’s spectacular aerodynamics have now been translated into a totally modern form. I think it’s cool that the Audi designers have been inspired by their own past and uniquely transferred the car’s technologies and appearance into the present.”

The brand and its passion for motorsport motivated me to get into rallying,” Block revealed. “That Audi has now developed this car for me and my team, and has joined us in our next project, has made a dream come true for me. The Hoonitron is writing the next chapter in our history and taking our Gymkhana story into the future.”

We’re certainly looking forward to seeing the new video and wonder if Audi will be able to convince the German authorities to allow him to do his spectacular driving in the carmaker’s home city of Ingolstadt. With his Fords, he’s burnt rubber on the streets of cities like London and Detroit, right in front of the police (who blocked off roads just for him).

Although Formula E has shown that electric power can be used for racing cars and the appearance of fully electric vehicles (EVs) in some motorsports events has also proven that all-electric powertrains can be very powerful, there are still people who imagine EVs are slow and boring.
Such vehicles were first promoted for their clean technology as they generated no exhaust gases while in use, meaning zero emissions into the environment. They are ideal for personal mobility as well as various forms of transport within cities or even for inter-city travel.
With the current state of EV technology, the range on a fully-charged battery pack has been steadily increasing and so has performance. As it is, the characteristic of an electric motor is that it generates maximum torque virtually from standstill, zipping off the line like a radio-control models car when the accelerator pedal is depressed.

Drifting and electric mobility
And believe it or not, you can also drift an EV, as a professional stunt driver shows with the latest Nissan LEAF. Drifting is usually performed by sportscars with powerful internal combustion engines, but Nissan wanted to try something different. In an unlikely pairing of adrenaline-inducing drifts and electric mobility, the LEAF was shown to produce both maximum torque and force, while delivering virtually silent donuts and burnouts.
The world’s best-selling EV therefore debunked outdated perceptions that electric vehicles are nothing but large golf carts. Throughout the test, the LEAF’s emissions naturally remained at zero – a number symbolized by the vehicle’s donut tread marks.

Many of us car enthusiasts were bitten by the automotive bug at an early age. Some of us had pinup pictures of Ferrari F40s and Lamborghini Diablos on our bedroom walls with aspirations of one day owning one of them.
In the case of 12-year-old Nikolass Bertanss, adolescence should prove to be a lot more interesting. He has his very own E36 BMW M3 that he uses for drifting. As absurd as that may sound, it gets better, the car was given to him as a gift for his birthday.
It’s been fully modified with a lot more power, better suspension, a roll cage and a ton of other upgrades to make it a competitive drift car. Unlike the standard M3, this one has had its original engine swapped out for a powerful V8 that sounds amazing.
Despite what many might think, Bertanss has some crazy skills when it comes to drifting. A skilled drifter, he is fully capable of handling his car around drift tracks with great aplomb. And will probably get even better as he matures.
The car’s cockpit has been reworked to accommodate his smaller size. It’s pedals can be adjusted according to his liking, which in the long run, can be pushed further back to accommodate his growing stature. This will allow Bertanns to grow into the car as he gets older and is of legal age to participate in competitive drifting.
