To mark the 50th anniversary of Tignanello, one of the most iconic red wines, Maserati has unveiled a customised Fuoriserie version of its latest electric creation, the GranCabrio Folgore. This bespoke car, crafted exclusively for Marchesi Antinori, will be auctioned on July 14 in California at Festival Napa Valley’s Arts for All Gala, one of the leading arts charity events in the United States.

A Collaboration of Italian Excellence

In celebration of its 110th anniversary, Maserati has partnered with Marchesi Antinori, a family with a 600-year history in winemaking, passed down through 26 generations. This collaboration symbolises the shared values of tradition, innovation, and excellence that define both brands. Marchesi Antinori and its Tignanello wine represent the passion and pioneering spirit that has always characterised Maserati.

Design Inspired by Vineyards

The GranCabrio Folgore Tignanello draws inspiration from the vineyard, a symbol of roots and heritage. The car’s body features a custom Terra di Tignanello paint, a rich chestnut colour with a metallic tint inspired by the vineyard’s soil and the hues of Tignanello’s barrels. The rims and calipers are in matte and gloss black, respectively, with copper-coloured emblems, and the Maserati logo in glossy copper.

Inside, the car showcases leather seats adorned with a silver and burgundy ribbed weave made of Vegea, a fabric derived from vineyards that resembles leather. This innovative material is used for the first time in a Maserati. Dark briar wood with laser engravings recalls the oak barrels used in winemaking, while the headrests feature embroidered Maserati Tridents combined with the Tignanello sun emblem. The Porsche 718, encompassing both the Boxster and Cayman models, has long been a staple in the automaker’s lineup, offering a more affordable yet highly capable sports car experience. However, it has been clear for years regarding its future, and it seems the transition to an all-electric 718 is imminent. According to recent reports, the current generation of the 718 (the 982) will cease production in October 2025, marking the end of its run as an internal combustion engine (ICE) car.

This information comes from Twitter user Zerin Dube, who shared an image purportedly from Porsche’s dealer portal. The screen capture indicates a bulletin sent to Porsche dealers, highlighting updated product and sales information, including the projected discontinuation date for the current 718 model. This aligns with the expected timeline for the launch of its electric successor, anticipated to arrive in 2025 or 2026.

A Look Back at the 718’s Legacy

The Porsche 718 model line dates back to 1996 with the debut of the Boxster, named in homage to the lightweight 1957 race car. The introduction of the Cayman, the hardtop variant of the Boxster, followed and together, these models have not only matched their market segment but often punched above their weight. Many enthusiasts believe the 718 could have rivalled the 911 in terms of performance if not for the internal brand politics that ensured the 911 remained Porsche’s flagship sports car.

The Shift to Electric

The decision to end the ICE era for the 718 comes amidst evolving automotive regulations and a global shift towards electric vehicles (EVs). Notably, the 718 has already been pulled from the market in Europe due to a new EU cybersecurity law, underscoring the increasing regulatory challenges for traditional combustion engines.

The forthcoming electric 718 aims to retain the core driving dynamics that Porsche enthusiasts cherish. Unlike some EVs that prioritise extreme horsepower and long range, the electric 718 will focus on maintaining a lightweight structure to ensure superior handling and performance. This approach aligns with Porsche’s commitment to preserving the driving experience, even as it transitions to electric powertrains.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance

Future Prospects

The shift to an electric powertrain might offer the 718 an opportunity to step out of the 911’s shadow. The electric 718 could potentially unlock new levels of performance and innovation, allowing Porsche to explore the true potential of this model without the constraints of internal combustion engines. Additionally, the introduction of a hybrid 911 alongside the electric 718 suggests a broader strategy to modernise Porsche’s sports car lineup while maintaining their storied legacy.

In conclusion, while the end of the ICE 718 marks the closing of a significant chapter in Porsche’s history, it also heralds the beginning of a new era. The transition to electric power offers exciting possibilities for the 718, promising to deliver the performance and driving pleasure that Porsche is renowned for, in a more sustainable and future-ready package.

There has been an ongoing debate about whether electric vehicle (EV) owners need to purchase tyres specifically designed for EVs. While some argue that EVs require special tyres, many EV owners find that standard tyres perform well and offer long life. Michelin, a trusted tyre manufacturer, has weighed in on this issue, dispelling the myth that EV-specific tyres are necessary, as reported by Torque News.

Before diving into Michelin’s stance, it’s important to understand some widely accepted facts about EVs:

  1. Weight: EVs are generally heavier than similarly sized vehicles with conventional powertrains due to their large batteries.
  2. Torque: EVs offer more torque and deliver it more smoothly than most conventionally powered vehicles.
  3. Noise: EVs are quieter inside the cabin, amplifying tyres and road noise.
  4. Efficiency: Range and efficiency are critical for many EV owners.
  5. Spare tyres: Most EV models do not come with spare tyres.

These characteristics influence tyre selection, emphasising durability, noise reduction, and efficiency. However, these needs are not exclusive to EVs; many conventional vehicles share similar requirements.

Michelin’s Perspective on EV Tyres

Michelin asserts that their latest generation of tyres are “EV Ready” and do not need to be specifically labeled as EV tyres. According to Michelin product managers, their tyres inherently possess the qualities that EV manufacturers and consumers seek, such as long wear, noise reduction, and low rolling resistance.
