Geneva International Motor Show

In a highly anticipated move, MG enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the unveiling of the third-generation MG3 at the upcoming Geneva International Motor Show on February 26, 2024. The glimpses already shared have ignited conversations among brand loyalists, creating a buzz of excitement leading up to the official reveal next month.

The design of the MG3 takes cues from MG’s more upscale models, notably the MG Cyberster sports car, evident in the sleek, swept-back headlights and streamlined bodywork. The front end of the MG3 exudes aggression with a sharp nose and intricate bonnet. A departure from tradition, the absence of a traditional grille is compensated by a bumper featuring a large intake, flanked by aerodynamic elements that enhance its sporty appeal. The rear showcases horizontal taillights and a dynamic bumper design, completing the contemporary aesthetic.

Inside, the MG3 is expected to undergo a modern revamp, potentially featuring a sizable 10.25-inch infotainment system reminiscent of the MG4.

Under the hood, the 2024 MG3 is poised to feature a hybrid powertrain, marrying a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 2.1kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor, resulting in a robust total output of 174hp. This hybrid setup not only offers an eco-friendly alternative but also aligns with MG’s commitment to providing affordable vehicles.

For the entry-level models, a relatively milder 89kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is expected to power the MG3, catering to a diverse range of consumers with varying performance preferences.

In an interesting move, the new MG3 is rumoured to introduce autonomous emergency braking, although it’s projected not to achieve a five-star ANCAP rating under the 2023-2025 protocol. This strategic decision aligns with MG’s overarching goal of offering some of the most competitively priced cars in their respective segments.

As MG enthusiasts count down the days to the Geneva International Motor Show, the forthcoming reveal of the third-generation MG3 promises a blend of sleek design, cutting-edge technology, and a hybrid powertrain, reinforcing MG’s position as a key player in the automotive industry.

On another note, the company is reportedly making a significant and speedy return to our market, according to rising speculations and spy photos showing certain EV vehicles testing in Malaysia!

When it started in 1979, the Dakar Rally (or Paris-Dakar Rally, as it was known then) ran from Paris to Dakar on the western coast of Africa. 43 years later, the Dakar Rally is still running – but it is actually in Saudi Arabia. In fact, between 2009 and 2019, it was held in South America after being forced to relocate due to security issues along the original route in Africa.

Next year, we will also see another famous event – the Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS) – not being held in its original city of Geneva in Switzerland but in Doha, Qatar. It will be the first time since the first Geneva Motor Show was held in 1905 that the event is relocating and will be held in November 2023.

The Geneva International Motor Show used to be the first major international motorshow each year, and often had concept cars and design studies as its highlights.

In 2020, the event had to be cancelled at the last moment due to the COVID-19 pandemic and urgent measures taken by the Swiss health authorities banned public gatherings of more than 1,000 people. Many other international events around the world were also cancelled or postponed but the cancellation of GIMS also seemed to make carmakers rethink their participation in such events and rethink marketing strategies.

While GIMS has traditionally been the first major international motorshow each year in March (though the North American International Auto Show which runs earlier has gained significance), often seeing the debut of new concepts and models, carmakers also began to see online promotion as becoming increasingly viable. With the pandemic creating uncertainties, commitments were slow to come for their future participation after 2020. As a result, the 2021 and 2022 events could also not run.

”Our team has worked very hard to ensure that GIMS 2023 can take place in both Geneva and Doha,” said Sandro Mesquita, CEO of the Geneva International Motor Show. “In these uncertain times, many brands are not in a position to commit to participating in a show in Europe in the winter. After assessing all the elements, it has become clear to the foundation that the 2023 Salon cannot take place in Geneva as planned.”

”We have done everything possible to ensure that we could host GIMS 2023 in Geneva in February. The enhanced event format and project had been very well received. But in the end, the risks overweighed the opportunities,” explained Maurice Turrettini, President of the foundation Comite permanent du Salon international de l’automobile de Geneve.

”Due to the uncertainties in the global economy and geopolitics, as well as the risks related to the development of the pandemic, the organisers have decided to focus exclusively on the planning of the event in Doha in 2023,” he explained, adding that the original plan to hold the show in two parts, with the first in Geneva, would not be carried out and only the second part in Doha would be realised.

The Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre in Qatar will be the new home for the Geneva International Motor Show from 2023.

GIMS in Doha will take place in November 2023 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre as well as several other decentralised venues, and will offer many unique and spectacular driving experiences. “We are now fully focused on organising GIMS in Doha and look forward to confirming the dates and format of this ground-breaking event with our partners at Qatar Tourism shortly,” said Mesquita, adding that the event in Qatar is scheduled to take place every 2 years.

The Tokyo Motorshow has also shifted venues since its first event in 1954 (above), but it has always been around the Tokyo area. After the first few years in a park, it moved to a proper exhibition hall in Harumi. By the late 1980s, the event had grown to become a major international motorshow and its venue moved to the huge Makuhari Messe complex (below) near Tokyo Disneyland in 1989. It would remain there until 2009 when conditions changed and the number of exhibitors became less. As a result, the venue was moved closer to Tokyo at the smaller Tokyo Big Sight convention centre (bottom) where it has been since 2011.

Although the North American International Auto Show has typically been held in January, it is the Geneva International Motor Show in March which has traditionally been considered the first major international motorshow for the year. The event often sees exotic and futuristic models being displayed and 50 years ago, the undisputed highlight was the Countach LP 500 by Lamborghini. However, the bright yellow sportscar was unveiled at Bertone’s stand so as not to distract attention from the new Miura SV that was making its debut.

Strong, positive response
Response to the Countach was so positive that Lamborghini was convinced it could be a successful production model and quickly set its engineering team to work. The Countach project, internally coded as ‘LP112’, where LP indicated the rear longitudinal position (‘Longitudinale Posteriore’ in Italian) of the 12-cylinder engine, stemmed from Ferruccio Lamborghini’s desire to maintain the image of a company at the forefront of style and technology following the Miura.

How the name was chosen
The origin of the car’s name lies in the dialect of the Piedmont region of Italy. In its final stages of assembly, the car was hidden in a shed for agricultural machinery on a farm near Grugliasco (a province of Turin) to avoid possible work stoppages related to labour unrest, and was ‘discovered’ by a farmer who exclaimed in amazement and enthusiasm, ‘Countach!’ (a word in Piedmontese dialect expressing ‘wonderment’). When Piedmont-born Marcello Gandini became aware of the fact, he thought that this word had a particularly strong communicative force and also convinced Nuccio Bertone, Ferruccio Lamborghini and his engineer colleague, Paolo Stanzani of this.

While the original car that was displayed was eventually destroyed during a crash test in England, the second prototype that was close to the production model was unveiled at the 1973 motorshow in Geneva and also displayed at the Paris Motor Show the same year.

The beautiful, clean, futuristic lines of the Countach were styled by Marcello Gandini, Design Director of Carrozzeria Bertone. Gandini was also responsible for the decision to use the scissor doors, which since that time have characterized the production of Lamborghini’s 12-cylinder models.

The third prototype shown at the 1974 Geneva Motor Show was virtually a pre-production unit of what would come to be the LP400 Countach that went on sale the same year. The LP500, with a more powerful 4.8-litre engine (the LP400 had a 3.9-litre engine) was introduced 8 years later.

LP500 gets bigger engine
The LP 500 was a substantially different car for the LP400, which had a dry weight of around 1,100 kgs. It had a platform frame rather than a tubular one, and on the 12-cylinder engine were air intakes with a shark gill design. Some of the body panels were of kevlar (a high-strength material used for bulletproof vests) and inside, it featured sophisticated electronic instrumentation.

In 1988, Pagani created a restyled version of the Countach which became its 25th Anniversary Edition (shown above). It was regarded as the most refined and possibly the fastest variant of the Countach, able to go from 0 – 60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 295 km/h. Between 1980 and 1983, the Countach was also used as the Safety Car during the Monaco F1 Grand Prix.

A legend in automobile history
From 1974 to 1990, 1,999 Countachs in 5 different series were produced, representing a model that, in addition to ending up displayed on the bedroom walls of an entire generation and being used in dozens of films, allowed Lamborghini to survive the most difficult years of its history and to enter permanently into the halls of legend.

With less than a week to go before opening, the 90th edition of the Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS) has been cancelled. Although the COVID-19 epidemic is spreading and increasing in many places all over the world, the organisers may have been debating daily whether to cancel but the decision was made for them when the Swiss government ordered that events with more than 1,000 people would not be permitted to run (at least until March 15, 2020).

“We regret this situation, but the health of all participants is our and our exhibitors’ top priority. This is a case of force majeure and a tremendous loss for the manufacturers who have invested massively in their presence in Geneva. However, we are convinced that they will understand this decision,” said Maurice Turrettini, Chairman of the Foundation Board.

Proton EMAS
The Geneva International Motor Show has been a popular event for manufacturers (though its future has been at risk for other reasons before this virus crisis). Even Proton was present in 2010 to display a concept car called the EMAS.

GIMS was to have opened on March 5 and construction of the stands at the Palexpo venue has been nearly complete and now dismantling will instead have to be organised. The financial consequences for all those involved in the event are significant, especially carmakers which had planned to use GIMS to unveil their new models, among them the new Volkswagen Golf GTI and Kia Sorento.

Geely launched its new ICON SUV last week with an online event in China and some companies may be rushing to do the same thing. Of course, they have already spent a lot of money preparing for GIMS and although they will get refunds, some costs won’t be avoidable, eg payments to contractors building the stands. However, tickets already purchased for the event will be refunded.

Even though there are so far only 15 confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection in Switzerland, the move by the government is aimed at preventing or delaying the spread of the disease in the country in the hope of reducing its momentum. For events with fewer than 1,000 people, organizers are required to carry a risk assessment in conjunction with the authorities to decide whether the event can be held.

Formula E
The Formula E all-electric single-seater series round in Marrakesh will run this weekend.

FIA monitoring situation but no cancellations – yet
While the Formula E round in Marrakesh will run this weekend, Liberty Media, the company which took over the commercial side of F1 in 2017, is expecting the COVID-19 crisis to impact its revenues by millions for the 2020 season. As it is, the Chinese GP scheduled in April has been postponed and the FIA is monitoring the situation closely and making the necessary decisions in the interests of the participants and the public.

The last time a F1 event was cancelled was in 2011 when the Bahrain Grand Prix, which was to have been the season-opener, could not run due to concerns about unrest in the country.

F1
First round of 2020 Formula 1 championship will still go ahead in Melbourne on March 15.

The first round for 2020 is to start in Melbourne, Australia, on March 15, a date that is presently used as an end-date for COVID-19-related measures. Round 2 will be in Bahrain and Round 3 at a new street circuit in Hanoi, Vietnam. Liberty Media wants the races to run and the FIA has so far not instructed any cancellations or changes to the calendar of 22 races, apart from the Chinese GP.

However, there could be a problem for some teams if the host countries become strict on entry or even refuse to allow entry to travellers from certain countries, eg Italy which has the largest cluster of infected persons. This not only affects the racing teams but also companies that support the teams. There are some logistics and hospitality contractors who have bases in China and they not only face increasing challenges to their operations, but movements of their personnel are hampered as some cannot enter certain countries or are stuck in them.

It’s not only F1 that has this critical situation but all sports… in fact, any event where large crowds will be gather in close proximity. These could include racetracks, stadiums and convention centres. It has already been found that one means of transmission has occurred at events where one infected person has passed the virus on to others present. The World Health Organization (WHO) has now raised its global risk assessment of the new coronavirus to the highest level.

The ‘GTI’ suffix has been used by some manufacturers on their high-performance models, largely inspired by the success and popularity of the Volkswagen Golf GTI that came out in 1976. The German carmaker produced the original ‘hot hatch’ and was so protective of the ‘GTI’ badge that it even took Suzuki to court to try to stop its use on the Swift in the early 2000s. The General Court of the European Union favoured Suzuki, declaring that ‘any visual, phonetic or conceptual similarity” between the two cars was negated by the Swift model name’.

The court also stated that most customers ‘would not assume that all vehicles, parts and accessories come from the same manufacturer simply on the basis of the three letters ‘GTI,’ and accordingly any likelihood of confusion was excluded’.

Still, ‘GTI’ remains very strongly associated with the Golf and with the launch of the 8th generation of the model line, a new version has been eagerly awaited. The new Golf GTI will maintain its design DNA and character – a relief when you see how Volkswagen is also accelerating electrification of its models.

As before, the new GTI has an understated look which makes it a ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’. However, GTI fans will recognise familiar elements like the red pinstripe. The standard LED headlights are positioned low down and dominate the striking front end in conjunction with the radiator grille. A narrow edge below the bonnet, red in colour, reaches across the entire front.

VW Golf GTI Mk 8

Upon activating the daytime running lights, two continuous LED strips up to the Volkswagen logo emphasise this striking line. This creates the completely new, unmistakable headlight design of the Golf GTI. Just as striking is the large, continuous, air inlet grille at the bottom featuring the honeycomb pattern so typical of this model as well as the integrated foglights.

Output raised to 245 ps/370 Nm
Preliminary information available (the model will have its debut at the Geneva International Motor Show next month), we know that it will have a 245 ps 2.0-litre turbocharged direct injection petrol engine which also produces maximum torque of 370 Nm. The numbers of this latest EA888 engine represent increases of 15 ps and 20 Nm when compared to the GTI of the last generation, and on par with the Performance Pack version of that same car.

The new Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk 8

The 4-cylinder engine can be ordered with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or 7-speed dual clutch DSG. Volkswagen says that top speed is limited to 250 km/h with a slight improvement in the 0 – 100 km/h sprint.

GTI character, digital capabilities
Although Volkswagen is enhancing the digital and networking capabilities of the eighth-generation Golf to an unprecedented extent, many of the original GT insignia can still be found on board. However, the sports steering wheel of yesteryear has been transformed into a new multifunction leather sports steering wheel with touch controls and an optionally integrated Travel Assist button to allow the powerful Golf to run at a top speed of 210 km/h while Travel Assist is engaged.

The new Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk 8

The three silver spokes on the steering wheel have been retained the central area having a red finish. The classic checked pattern of the sports seats is also retained, the new checked design now being called ‘Scalepaper’. Incidentally, this pattern was the influence of one of the company’s first female designers, Gunhild Liljequist, who joined Volkswagen’s Department of Fabrics and Colours 30 years ago.

The new Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk 8

She had gained a lot of inspiration from her travels around England and was always taken by high-quality fabrics with checked patterns. This would lead her to use the tartan design, then known as ‘Clark Plaid’, for the Golf GTI which would go on to become a familiar sight in the hot hatch.

More information will be available when the car is launched and if we’re lucky, we may get to see it in Malaysia by the end of 2020, if not earlier.

Given its compact size, the Renault Twingo was destined to one day become an electric vehicle (EV). But 28 years ago, when it was introduced, EV technology was still not advanced and didn’t offer the efficiency and performance that would attract consumers, apart from the fact that the technology was expensive.

After three generations and almost 4 million cars sold in 25 countries, the Twingo now goes fully electric with its latest version – the Twingo Z.E. which will be launched at the Geneva Motorshow next month.

2020 Renault TWINGO Z.E.

Seventh EV developed by Renault
This is the seventh all-electric vehicle developed by Renault, joining the ZOE, Twizy quadricycle, Kangoo Z.E., Master Z.E., as well as the RSM SM3 Z.E. saloon (sold in South Korea), and the City K-ZE small SUV (sold in China).

Continuing with the 3.61-metre long model’s fun design, attractive personality and exclusive customisation possibilities, the addition of an electric powertrain offers personal mobility with zero emissions. Its electric rear-wheel drive and different driving modes make it fun and enjoyable to drive.

2020 Renault TWINGO Z.E.

The Twingo Z.E., which weighs 1,112 kgs, has a 60-kW powertrain which generates maximum torque of 160 Nm. This enables a claimed top speed of 135 km/h (0 to 100 km/h in 12.6 seconds) which is sufficient for motorway driving.

A ‘B mode’ gives drivers a choice of three levels for the regenerative braking function as soon as they release the accelerator pedal. In the most advanced configuration, the car decelerates significantly, which quickly regenerates the battery, reduces the need for braking and makes city driving easier. Thermal management is provided by a water-cooling system, a first in the Renault Z.E. range.

2020 Renault TWINGO Z.E.

Up to 215 kms range
Sitting on a platform engineered for EVs, the 22 kWh battery packs has the latest-generation lithium-ion cells developed in partnership with LG Chem. Depending on the cycle used, the range can be from 180 kms to 250 kms, and Renault believes that this means an owner can have a week of city driving without recharging.

An ‘Eco’ mode, activated by pushing a button on the centre console, extends operating range to around 215 kms on mixed journeys by limiting acceleration and top speed on motorways.

Flexible charging system
With its smart Cameloon charger (patented by Renault), the Twingo Z.E. can be charged at home, at work or using the AC power infrastructure up to 22 kW. The technology enables it to adapt to the power available at each charging station and make full use of existing facilities, especially in cities. As a result, Twingo Z.E. benefits from optimum charging time whatever the charging station.

2020 Renault TWINGO Z.E.

It is claimed to recharge up to 4 times faster than its competitors at stations most commonly found in public areas. Connection to a 22-kW charging station for just thirty minutes increases operating range by around 80 kms. However, from a home 2.3-kW outlet, a fully empty battery back would take at least 13.5 hours to ‘refill’ to 100%.

Compact but spacious within
Roomy and functional as ever, the passenger compartment retains all the customisation options offered on the range with the Z.E. logo identifying the all-electric aspect of Twingo Z.E. The 7-inch colour touchscreen, unique in the segment, offers access to Twingo’s new connectivity features.

2020 Renault TWINGO Z.E.

With 5 doors, a flat floor and a fully foldable passenger seat, the Twingo Z.E. provides a 2.31-metre loading length. With optimised placement of the battery pack, the size of the boot, closed by a handled tailgate, also remains the same.

2020 Renault TWINGO Z.E.

With the EASY LINK onboard system, charging time can be scheduled in order to take advantage of off-peak hours. Once on the road, the system displays the car’s range on a map in real time, adds the nearest charging stations on request and updates their availability in real time.

Outside the car, drivers can check the battery level during charging from their MY Renault app and remotely control air conditioning and heating to adjust the temperature of the passenger compartment during charging, without affecting the vehicle’s range. Drivers can also use the EV Route Planner feature to simulate a planned route and identify the necessary charging stations on the way.
