A lightweight carbon fibre hybrid wheel option will be offered by Hyundai’s high-performance N division for its models.

The Ioniq 5 N‘s new Hyundai N Performance parts were displayed at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed with a 21-inch prototype version of this wheel that Dymag and Hankuk Carbon had collaboratively produced. Since the 1970s, Dymag has produced lightweight performance wheels, and more recently, with assistance from composites partner Hankuk, it has moved into producing carbon fibre wheels.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is this year’s venue for the world debut of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. The high-performance electrified car is the first in N’s electrification strategy, but it won’t be the last. The Ioniq 5 is Hyundai’s “first step” in its electrification strategy, according to the automaker, with further EVs from the sub-brand to come.

Two electric motors are available in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. The model’s combined output of 600hp and 740Nm of torque may somewhat alter before production begins. With the N Grin Boost mode activated, the output rises to 641hp and 770Nm of torque for 10 seconds.

The all-wheel-drive engine can accelerate the N from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds; with N Grin Boost, that time drops to 3.4. It has a top speed of 260 km/h.

At one time, when mention was made of an ‘electric vehicle’, the perception was that it was going to be boring to drive. This was because decades ago, EV technology was still not developed enough and performance was not a priority. There were many other issues to overcome – like range anxiety – in order to make EVs more widely accepted.

But over the past 10 years, perceptions have changed and many carmakers have developed – and even started selling – EVs with sportscar performance. With the inherent peak torque generated almost from standstill, an EV can accelerate a lot quicker than a car with a combustion engine, and sportscar makers have exploited this character.

Fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) technology is not new to Hyundai Motor. In fact, the company was already carrying out R&D on such vehicles, which use hydrogen, from the early 2000s. By 2013, it was able to commercialise a FCEV in the form of the iX35, the first carmaker to do so.

Since then, development on FCEVs has advanced further and the company has accumulated even more experience and feedback through the use of its FCEVs over millions of kilometres in many parts of the world.

Hyundai N, the performance arm, is also looking at FCEV technology for the future and has developed the N Vision 74 as a high-performance hydrogen fuel cell hybrid rolling laboratory. While it is the first such high-performance rolling lab for Hyundai N’s engineers to use, it is not the first time for N where FCEV technology is concerned.

In 2015, the company also created the N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo with the launch of the N brand to envision the future of hydrogen-based high performance. The futuristic N 2025 was conceived to represent Hyundai in the Vision Gran Turismo program, a series of fictional concept cars for the Gran Turismo videogame by Polyphony Digital. While it was never produced as a real-life running model, it had advanced technologies that gave extremely high performance which gamers could experience.

For the N Vision 74, Hyundai’s engineers developed a hybrid structure of a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) in combination with an FCEV system, placed in an all-new layout. By having a fuel cell system and battery-electric system powering the car together, the cooling efficiency is improved.

The two different power sources can be used together or independent, depending on different driving conditions. This fine-tuned logic system enables better torque vectoring by twin motors on the rear, allowing a precise and responsive cornering experience. Moreover, the N Vision 74 explores the balance between the performance and cooling with a 3-channel cooling system.

Measuring 4952 mm long, 1995 mm wide and 1331 mm tall on a 2905 mm wheelbase, the design of the concept car is inspired by the Hyundai Pony Coupe concept of 1974. This concept car developed by the designer Giorgetto Giugiaro was a proposal for a sportscar based on the very significant model in Hyundai Motor’s history. The concept car was then built into prototypes for what was to be Hyundai’s first production sportscar. Although it could not reach production in the end, the daring attitude set the tone for the entire company.

The N Vision 74 inherited the pure surface, dynamic proportioned profile and the unique B-pillar from the Pony Coupe concept. In addition, the lighting units have Parametric Pixel lighting, a feature which is seen on the latest models.

RN22e concept shows how Hyundai N will ensure high performance in fully electric cars

 

Hyundai will launch its first all-electric high-performance model in 2023. This will be based on the IONIQ 5 and is currently being developed by the carmaker’s N high-performance division. For the development work, the engineers are using two high-performance concept cars — the RN22e and N Vision 74 – as ‘rolling laboratories’.

Hyundai Motor’s ‘rolling labs’ are where it tests and verifies the company’s advanced technologies to apply them to future production models. In this case, a lot of work is being done on electrification and how to provide models with the type of performance the N brand is known for.

The RN22e, which possesses track-ready performance, uses the Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP and a design based on the IONIQ 6 Electric Streamliner. As Hyundai N’s first rolling lab based on the E-GMP, the RN22e shows the N brand’s vision and direction in an electrified future. The concept received its designation because it is the rolling lab of N brand developed in 2022 and is an EV performance.

Testing of the RN22e focusses on the brand’s three performance pillars. These start with ‘corner rascal’, a cornering capability since the brand launch that makes use of e-LSD, Corner Carving Differential for most N models. The RN22e enhances the ‘corner carving’ feel with heavier weighting  by exploiting torque vectoring. 3D-printed parts reduce weight and keep the rigidity high for better handling. With AWD, there is optimized torque distribution whatever the drive mode and the driver can customise the amount of torque going to the front and rear wheels.

Enhancing racetrack capability
To enhance the RN22e’s racetrack capability, the N engineers focused on cooling and braking endurance. Track-optimized settings let drivers go to the limit with 4-piston monobloc calipers and 400-mm hybrid discs to ensure plenty of stopping power is available. In addition, the engineers will use the RN22e to study how to deliver dynamic movement with regenerative braking that can precisely controls yaw and corner attack. Once verified, the new state-of-the-art technologies can be transferred to N production models.

Hyundai N Sound+

Sound is also part of the emotional driving experience – but electrified models don’t have the type of sound that excites enthusiasts. So the RN22e has N Sound+ which generates sound from speakers inside and outside the car. In addition, the N e-shift integrates the vibration and shifting feel with N Sound+.
By adapting the IONIQ 6’s streamliner design, the RN22e will leverage on the new EV’s aerodynamic features. In order to maximize the performance, Hyundai N added motorsport-inspired details that add visual dynamism and also improve cooling performance and aerodynamics.

In the 1970s, the ‘hot hatch’ appeared on the scene, bringing high-performance to a broader segment of customers. Now, in the 21st century where SUVs are the most popular models, Hyundai Motor has created a ‘hot SUV’ with its new Kona N, the first SUV model in its N high-performance brand line-up.

The Kona N was developed to offer customers the performance level of a hot hatch. It aims to make SUVs fun to drive, with potential for track use and not only everyday driving. “It goes beyond the limits of an ordinary SUV. Kona N can carve corners on the racetrack and bring excitement to everyday driving,” promises Albert Biermann, President & Head of R&D Division at Hyundai Motor Group.

The standard Kona

While the standard Kona already has distinctive looks, the Kona N gets even more individuality with the bold and dynamic language of N models. With a 4215 mm length, 1800 mm width, and 1565 mm height, the Kona N is 10 mm longer than the standard model and just as long as the new KONA sporty N Line trim (a different variant). The 2600 mm wheelbase is, however, the same as the standard car.

Designed with a focus on maximum weight reduction and high strength, the lightweight 19-inch forged alloy wheels add to a great stance and very sporty appearance. These are fitted with specially developed 235/40R19 Pirelli P-Zero high-performance tyres.

The high-performance braking system has been designed for stability in changing driving conditions to enhance safety. Enlarged front and rear disc brakes take in extra air through the bigger intakes on either side of the car’s front bumper for better cooling. The application of high friction caliper material, a lower arm guide, and a heat shield maximise brake performance with more efficient cooling and high heat endurance capacity.

8-speed N-DCT
The latest member of the N brand is powered by a 4-cylinder 2.0 T-GDI 280 ps/392 Nm petrol engine, coupled to an 8-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (N DCT). The N-DCT is said to offer the driver the engaging experience of a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic transmission.

Developed by the Hyundai Motor Group, the N DCT is a wet-type transmission with two separated clutches for better acceleration and a faster upshift. The wet type clutches further provide for better cooling. N DCT technology was first offered in the Veloster N and then the i30 N as well.

It has 3 high-performance functions – N Power Shift, N Grin Shift, and N Track Sense Shift – that enhance the car’s capabilities by using dedicated shift logic management. N Power Shift, used while the Launch Control function is active, can send the Kona N from standstill to 100 km/h within a claimed 5.5 seconds.

Unlike a vehicle with a conventional automatic transmission, the car does not automatically ‘creep’ when the brake pedal is released (if transmission is in D position). The driver can choose to turn the creep off as required, for example when on the racetrack.

To embody the N product philosophy, the Kona N comes with high-performance features such as an  Electronic Limited Slip Differential (e-LSD) and the various Electronic Stability Control modes have been optimised to improve cornering. Traction Mode ensures that traction can be established across a variety of road conditions while N Grin Control System offers 5 drive that contribute to its everyday sports car character.

Although having the external appearance and form of a SUV, inside the car are various motorsport-inspired features that include special sports seats and an ‘emotional’ sound experience. The performance-oriented look and feel has been optimised for high-performance driving.

One feature that would stand out is the N-exclusive sport steering wheel, which features a design optimised for the perfect grip and button layout necessary for dynamic driving. Two customisable N buttons on the steering wheel allow for any type of pre-set to be mapped according to individual preference for even more ease of operation, and paddle shifters make it possible for the driver to switch gears without taking their hands off the wheel.

The Kona N is the first Hyundai high-performance model to be equipped with a Performance Head-Up Display. The  display shows vehicle information on a transparent screen, allowing the driver to see relevant navigation, safety, and driving information while keeping their eyes on the road.

There is also a 10.25-inch digital N cluster 10.25-inch AVN touchscreen. A Performance Driving Data System monitors driving to help improve racetrack skills. The feature saves and displays driving data, such as power and torque levels, and turbo boost during racetrack driving via AVN touchscreen.

For a more emotional driving experience, a sporty engine sound from the exhaust and intake noise is supported by the Electronic Sound Generator in the body panel. In the cabin, at the base of the windscreen, an engine sound generator provides some extra acoustic drama to match the mood of the driver.

The exterior design has SUV elements with the N membership identified by red accents. An exclusive front grille design, with its dedicated mesh, an integrated N logo also identify this as being a ‘hotter’ Kona. Other design cues indicate that this is a high-performance Hyundai N model are N forged wheels with a dark satin grey finish and red calipers, an N logo on the wheel cap, and an exclusive side sill in red with an engraved N logo.

At the rear, the large, double-wing roof spoiler dominates the view, providing downforce to maintain stability at higher speeds. There is also the iconic triangular third brake light as well as two large exhaust mufflers.

First deliveries in Europe start after June this year, and although Hyundai has not announced the prices, it is estimated that the model will cost at least the equivalent of around RM183,000 upwards in some markets.

Hyundai Motor has confirmed that the next model to have the high-performance N badge will be from its Kona range. The compact model will be the first high-performance SUV from the Korean carmaker.

Hyundai’s high-performance brand N, which ventured into the high-performance field with its i30 N, is planning to expand its line-up in 2021. Especially with more diversified segments in its line-up, like the i20 N and the upcoming Kona N, the brand will provide enthusiasts with fun-to-drive vehicles.

How Hyundai N started
The first association of ‘N’ with Hyundai was when the carmaker presented its N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo concept car for PlayStation’s Gran Turismo videogame series in 2015. In that same year, Hyundai brought in Albert Biermann, the former head of BMW’s M division, to spearhead the development of the N sub-brand and create a line of high-performance production cars.

The N brand has gained prominence with the many successes of the Hyundai N team in the World Rally Championship.

The ‘N’ in Hyundai N stands for Namyang, home to Hyundai Motor’s global R&D Centre in Korea since 1995, and also for Nurburgring, where N models are tested and developed further. The close connection between Namyang and the Nurburgring created the foundation for N, aiming to build on the company’s motorsport experience to bring winding road fun to customers who love cars. The ‘N’ logo itself embodies this idea, as it symbolises a chicane.

Hyundai has announced that it will introduce more new N and N Line models in the sports, sedan and SUV segments of the US market during 2021 and 2022. This steady flow of new models under the N performance sub-brand will include variants in each major vehicle category, including three purist N models and four N Line models.

Since the establishment of its Customer Racing division in 2015, Hyundai Motorsport has been providing teams and drivers competitive cars for rallies or circuit racing. From its competitive i20 R5 rallycar to the competitive i30 N TCR, Hyundai Motorsport-built cars have claimed victory in several championships, including national rally series in France and Spain, as well as consecutive titles in the FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) in 2018 and 2019.

The i20R5 has been in competition since 2016.

5 years of experience
Drawing on the Customer Racing department’s 5 years of experience with the i20 R5, an all-new rallycar has been developed for privateer teams and drivers. Revealed recently, the new i20 N Rally2 is an improved all-round package based on the strong foundation of the new road-going i20 N chassis.

The i20 N Rally2, to be entered in 2021 rallies, retains the dynamic look of the road car – part of Hyundai’s new ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ identity – which includes several elements inspired by motorsport. With the exception of the 5-speed sequential gearbox from the i20 R5, nearly every other part of the i20 N Rally2 is brand new, including the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine.

“The i20 R5 was the first car from our Customer Racing department, and the new i20 N Rally2 shows how far we have come in the 5 years since the creation of the department,” said Team Principal Andrea Adamo. “Every area of the new car is an improvement over the original, thanks to the work of our dedicated team of designers and engineers.”

Fresh approach
The design process began in January this year with a specialised group of designers and engineers leveraging the experience of the i20 R5 project. In doing so, they have been able to take advantage of the growth of the Customer Racing business since 2015, which has seen the department grow from a handful of people to a team of 60.

The development of the i20 R5 has continued, with the engineers providing several updates to the original car in recent seasons to improve handling and performance. The i20 N Rally2 carries over these enhancements, with the new chassis allowing further gains in nearly every aspect of the car.

New suspension components and dampers give the car more driver-friendly handling characteristics on all surfaces – vital for the Rally2 category, which forms the basis for national and regional championships as well as WRC 2 and WRC 3 classes.

The i20 N Rally2 is developed with the aim of continuing the success of the i20 R5, which has claimed numerous titles with our customers since its debut in 2016. The i20 R5 customer teams will continue to receive the same level of support, uninterrupted by the development of the new car.

With the way electrification of cars is going, there will come a time when electric power replaces combustion power in racing cars. In fact, it’s already started with the Formula E series for single-seaters and the electric version of the TCR.

Manufacturers like Hyundai Motor are preparing for this change and one project that the company’s high-performance N division has revealed its next-generation electrified RM20e Racing Midship Sports Car. ‘RM’ refers to the prototype model’s ‘Racing Midship’ rear-drive, midship powertrain configuration, a fundamental design differentiator that yields ideal handling balance and agility from a low polar-moment of inertia.

“Our new electrified RM20e pushes the proven RM platform forcefully into a new, environmentally-focused decade of the 21st century, stretching the performance envelope of electrification on normal road environments,” said Albert Biermann, President and Head of Research and Development Division at Hyundai Motor Group.

“RM20e represents a revolutionary new chapter of electrified performance for the Racing Midship series, and our N engineers continue to garner valuable insights in the arena of zero-emission performance dynamics,” he declared.

Testing high-performance technologies
The RM platform is an engineering ‘rolling lab’ for testing high performance technologies at all speeds and driving conditions. The testing is especially important to ensure that the RM20e’s copious 596 kW/810 hp and 960 Nm output can be effectively transmitted to the ground on all types of surfaces.

Performance times are expected to be less than 3 seconds from 0 – 100 km/h and less than 10 seconds from 0 – 200 km/h. The positioning of the motor in the middle and the rear-drive layout provides optimal traction required for this level of acceleration. While having racing car-like levels of performance, balance, braking and grip, the engineers have been working to also provide quietness, responsiveness and road-going capability for daily drivers.

Variety of powertrains available
The electrified powertrain has zero-emissions, of course, and as Hyundai has developed a variety of electrified-propulsion solutions. Therefore a full spectrum of electrified powertrains is available for testing with this high-performance sportscar platform.

Hyundai’s recent investment and strategic partnership with Rimac Automobili has facilitated co-development of both BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) and FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) prototypes. The electrified RM platform will continue to evolve along with the growth of this RIMAC partnership.

44 eco-friendly models by 2025
The Hyundai Motor Group, which includes Kia Motors, has set a strategic plan to deploy 44 eco-friendly models by 2025, which will include products from the N brand as well.

“The RM20e sports car prototype clearly signals future electrified brand aspirations for Hyundai’s performance N brand, moving N into the prestigious genre of supercar-level performance. RM20e proves that N driving excitement will not be compromised, even in electrified model variants.,” said Thomas Schemera, Executive Vice-President and Head of Product Division at the Hyundai Motor Group.”

The history of the RM project goes back some 8 years and has served to develop and connect new high-performance motorsports technologies with future N models. Since the initiation of project RM, there has been a progressive evolution of the RM series with prototypes RM14, RM15, RM16 and RM19. In 2019, Hyundai’s first electric racing car – the Veloster N eTCR (pictured above) – was developed for the eTCR electric touring car series.
