There are a lot of expectations levelled on the pick-up truck segment.

Decades ago, a pick-up truck only had to be tough and reliable.

It just had to be able to carry as well as tow heavy things, not break down, and that’s about it.

Manufacturers had little to worry about in terms of design and creature comforts.

They focused on bomb-proof reliability and go-anywhere technology such as an advanced four-wheel-drive system.

Now though, pick-up truck manufacturers have a lot to do.

They not only have to make sure their product is tough and reliable, but it also has to be comfortable with advanced creature comforts and safety technology to match that of a regular sedan.

Good looks matter now more than ever before as well. Not to mention top notch after sales service.

A good warranty matters more in this segment than any other segment as well. Simply because the truck needs to be able to do what the manufacturer says it will do – like be able to tow three tons without breaking down.

And if it did break down – the manufacturer needs to fix it, and quick.

Which takes me to the one pick-up truck that seemingly has it all – the all-new Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain.

Isuzu’s have always been tough and reliable. Basic machines with a singular purpose of carrying out the toughest jobs in some of the toughest terrains.

It is a reputation that has been built on decades of use and abuse in some of toughest conditions around the world.

But good looks, comfort and brimming with creature comforts and technology is not something that is usually associated with an Isuzu.

Now though, the D-Max X-Terrain is different. Very different.

It’s good looks can challenge that of the Ford Ranger Wildtrak.

It’s toughness and reliability could perhaps put a Toyota Hilux to shame.

The Mitsubishi Triton doesn’t even come close to it in all aspects. And neither does the Nissan Navara.

Take the interior for starters.

The seats are among the most comfortable in its segment, and extend support to the shoulders, which isn’t something you get very often in a pick-up truck.

The tanned brown leather doesn’t only look great but is super comfortable especially during long distance drives.

The driver’s seat is electronically adjustable in 8-different ways with impressive thigh support. Thigh support is important for those long cross-border drives.

And what I really appreciate about the sitting position of the X-Terrain is the steering wheel that is adjustable for reach and height (tilt & telescopic). Which means you are never left uncomfortable when driving.

The Isuzu is the only truck to offer such adjustability as well.

The quality of everything is top notch, even the buttons feel like they came from a BMW 3-Series or a Mercedes C-Class.

Then there is the entertainment system that is accessible via a 9-inch touchscreen that dominates the dashboard.

The software that gives you access to navigation and other controls such as air-conditioning is easy to use.

But it also offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

This combined with an impressive sound system that features speakers mounted on the roof (!) of the car, gives the interior a luxurious look and feel.

Occupants of the rear seats will appreciate the rear air-conditioning vents and the single USB slot to charge electronics.

The interior is generally well thought out and doesn’t seem to be lacking anything. Simply said, almost perfect for a pick-up truck and there’s lots that other pick-up truck manufacturers can learn from the X-Terrain. Especially as far as creature comforts and ergonomics go.

Then there is the powertrain.

Isuzu’s have generally offered rather basic powertrains. There has always been a robust engine at the centre that is a good mix of power, reliability and fuel economy.

And that engine has been mated to a rather traditional gearbox.

That has not changed, and I understand why.

Why fix something that works fine?

The engine is a 3.0-litre turbocharged unit that is mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

Rather conventional you might say, but it is a tried and tested powertrain that has been in the market for a while already.

It is proven to be reliable which is the most important thing in a pick-up.

And it is also quite economical. You get a range of a little over 750 kilometres when the 76-litre diesel tank is full.

In fact, on a trip to Penang, I saw a range of 850 kilometres. So consumption depends on usage and your driving style.

In terms of power, the X-Terrain isn’t exactly the most powerful in its class.

It puts out 190PS and 450Nm of torque, which may not seem like much against the likes of the Ranger Wildtrak, but it is still plenty for day to day usage.

This powertrain also gives the X-Terrain the ability to tow anything that weighs up to three and a half tons. And is able to carry anything that weighs under a ton in the rear bed.

Other pick-up trucks too have similar capabilities, proving that you don’t need mega power to get the work done.

In terms of drive, the X-Terrain feels more refined while power delivery is not an issue. It will comfortably cruise at about 140-150km/h with no dramas.

The suspension set up is quite regular – independent double wishbones with coil springs and gas shocks up front. And the usual leaf springs at the rear.

This gives the X-Terrain a typical pick-up truck live drive and feel, so there are no surprises there.

But the one segment that has the X-Terrain glittering over its competitors is the amount of safety technology that the D-Max has over its competitors.

Namely ADAS, which is short for Advanced Driver Assist System.

ADAS is a suite that encompasses all the safety technology that the D-Max X-Terrain has to offer. This includes.

1. Forward Collision Warning – This detects a potential collision in front and alerts the driver.

2. Autonomous Emergency Braking – Detects a collision and brakes automatically if the driver doesn’t respond.

3. Turn Assist – Monitors oncoming traffic when turning and brakes automatically to avoid accidents.

4. Automatic Pedal Misapplication Mitigation – This system helps to brake the car when the accelerator pedal has been accidentally pressed by the driver.

5. Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go function – Adjusts the cars cruising speed based on traffic conditions, and also helps to accelerate again when the car comes to a complete stop.

6. Lane Departure Warning – Detects and warns the driver when the car accidentally drifts towards another lane.

7. Automatic High Beam – Dims the high beam automatically to avoid dazzling other drivers.

8. Blind Spot Monitor – Alerts the driver when a vehicle is in the car’s blind spot.

9. Rear Cross Traffic Alert – Monitors the rear of the car and alerts the driver when there’s a vehicle approaching when reversing.

10. Manual Speed Limiter – Limits the speed of the car at the press of a button.

11. Multi Collision Brake – In the event of an accident, the car’s brakes are applied to prevent subsequent impact from cars behind.

Not only that, but the D-Max is the only pick-up truck in its segment that has a five-Star ASEAN NCAP crash rating. And it is also the only pick-up truck that offers seven airbags when all other trucks have just six, or less.

These are not the only safety features the X-Terrain has to offer. In fact, the safety tech is so vast that the official brochure has three full pages dedicated to safety technology alone.

The Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain seemingly has it all. But what perfects an already impressive package is the fact that it come with a seven year unlimited mileage warranty.

For reference sake, the Toyota Hilux only offers a five-year or 150,000km warranty, so if you do 160,000km in two years, that warranty is out the window.

The Ford Ranger Wildtrak offered a five year warranty until recently. It now comes with a five-year or 160,000km warranty.

The Mitsubishi Triton on the other hand offers a five-year or 200,000km warranty.

The Nissan Navara too offers a five-year or 150,000km warranty.

In that aspect, Isuzu has truly put its money where its mouth is (or grille) and offered the best warranty. Because there is no better testament to a product than the manufacturer itself having trust in it and offering the best warranty in the market.

At just RM142,000, the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain is undoubtedly the best value for money pick-up truck in the market right now.

It is no wonder then that the truck has been the recipient of multiple awards the world over naming the X-Terrain as the best pick-up truck in the market.

Since its global debut, the all-new third-generation Isuzu D-MAX has impressed buyers and critics alike, attracting new users who have appreciate its impressive level of sophistication, comfort and capability.

Improved in all aspects, the all-new Isuzu D-MAX aims to win more customers (w/VIDEO)

Since the 1990s, the Mazda BT-50 has been a ‘twin’ of the Ford Ranger, as the two carmakers worked together to develop a common truck model (they also jointly developed passenger cars, vans and SUVs). However, for the new BT-50, Mazda no longer worked with Ford (which unveiled its new Ranger recently) and instead formed a commercial partnership with Isuzu Motors to develop a new model.

KODO design makes the difference
It’s no secret that the new BT-50 is adapted from the latest Isuzu D-MAX which was launched in Malaysia in April this year. However, when you look at the two pick-up trucks, you will see that Mazda has used its KODO design language to differentiate appearances significantly. In fact, if you were not told of the Isuzu connection, you would probably not think of the D-MAX. And to ensure its brand is immediately known, there is the familiar front grille (enlarged to match the size of the truck) and the 3-dimensional signature wing that extends out towards the side.

With its KODO design language, the new BT-50 has a significantly different appearance from the latest Isuzu D-MAX (below) which it has technical similarities with.

There’s not a lot you can do with a truck design since the profile of cab and cargo bed are pretty much similar. So the areas where differentiation can be done would be areas like the lights. In the case of the BT-50, the headlights are distinct and sharp, taking in cues from Mazda’s SUV range, and achieving the ‘deep gaze’ characteristic of Mazda.

At the back, the tailgate is the key design point, shaped to flow towards the Mazda badge to create a continuity of movement from front to rear. This complements the overall sense of bold and powerful movement, even when standing still.

Two engine choices
For the Malaysian market, Bermaz Motor offers two engine choices – a 1.9-litre or 3-litre turbodiesel 4-cylinder engines. These engines are also used in the D-MAX, so they are proven powerplants although it is possible that Mazda engineers may have tuned the characteristics slightly differently to meet the brand’s own philosophy. The electronic control module is programmed to match the torque delivery characteristics of the engine by always selecting the best ratio. Both engines are paired with 6-speed automatic transmissions.

Inside the double cab
As with the exterior, the double cab interior also has the same high quality feel that Mazdas are known for. The human-centric environment ensures that drivers feel connected to their vehicle and are comfortable. The horizontal layout of the instrument panel extends out to the door trim on each side, visually widening the cabin. Fine stitching is used for the dashboard, instrument panel cover, and kneepads, adding an extra touch of quality to the interior. The door moldings that wrap around the dash area are a feature of the Kodo design philosophy.

Rear passengers have convenience and comfort with air ducts bringing cool air to them and a USB charging port to recharge personal electronic devices. Supportive seats wrap around the body to hold it well when driving over bumpy terrain. A large touchscreen infotainment system offers comprehensive functionality, including Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity.

The new instrument cluster has two round analog meters flanking a 4.2-inch multi-information display in the centre. The panel surface is finished in Mazda’s deep, pure black color, creating a striking contrast against the light font and silver rims of the analog meters.

The rear doors are designed with wide openings and ample space for the feet and knees to pass through. This makes it easier for passengers to get in and out of the rear of the cab. Assist grips at the top are also useful for those who need support for the body.

As safe as a car
Even though this is a pick-up truck, safety is just as important as the occupants are the same as those who travel in a passenger car. Mazda therefore provides safety technologies which 7 SRS airbags and depending on the variant) active driver-assistance systems such as ABS + EBD with Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control. Hill Launch Assist (HLA) and Hill Descent Control (HDC) are also available, while a Rear Differential Lock is standard.

Certain versions of the new BT-50 also come with advanced systems such as Automatic High Beam, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning System, Forward Collision Warning, Auto Emergency Braking, and Adaptive Cruise Control. So it is comparable to a modern car which should be the case since most pick-up trucks are now being driven on highways more than off-road.

Before they became the ‘lifestyle’ machines of today, pick-up trucks have traditionally been workhorses. They have been used in worksites, in the jungle and anywhere ordinary vehicles could not go. Because of such a role, they were usually basic with minimum convenience features as the things that mattered to customers were performance, capability and of course, durability and reliability.

That image has long been dispelled by manufacturers such as Isuzu, specialists in pick-up trucks and light commercial vehicles. When the transition occurred from being purely for business use to a more dual-purpose role, Isuzu was ready to offer vehicles with better comfort and convenience – without sacrificing the core strengths.

The latest third-generation Isuzu D-Max is an excellent example of this evolution. Those who remember the first D-MAX that appeared in Malaysia 18 years ago will know best just how much change has taken place in the model. Because of its dual-purpose role, manufacturers of pick-up trucks typically develop a variety of versions with different powertrains and drivetrains to suit different needs. Less weight, less complexity
While 4×4 is useful, it also means additional weight with additional hardware which a 4×2 does not need. The less complex drivetrain, with just a propeller shaft to the rear axle lowers means lower kerb weight and there’s also lower rolling resistance. Maintenance requirements are also less, so for those who do not really need 4×4, this variant would be ideal.

By not having the transfer case, front differential and ancillary drive system, the D-Max Auto Plus 4×2 weighs 1,830 kgs, a difference of 85 kgs compared to the 4×4 variant and about the weight of an average adult.

Based on similar specifications as the D-Max Standard 4×4 Auto variant, the D-Max Auto Plus 4×2 is powered by the latest 1.9-litre RZ4E-TC 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine that produces a 150 ps/350 Nm. The engine has impressive performance despite its smaller displacement than other pick-ups. Power delivery to the rear wheels is via a 6-speed automatic transmission with ratios identical to the 4×4 variant. However, the tuning has been matched to exploit the engine’s dynamic performance characteristics, in particular, its flat torque delivery and flexible throttle response.

The Isuzu Dynamic Drive Platform supports the vehicle and offers good stability and excellent flex resistance, making it a very capable vehicle regardless of load. To be able to have a superior payload capability, the standard suspension rating is specified for the double wishbone set-up up front and 3-leaf semi-elliptical springs in the rear.

Safety systems like a car
The pick-up truck has not only evolved in features and performance but also has much better safety than the earlier generations. The driver of today’s D-MAX has ABS and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution for assured and stable braking as well as control, along with Brake Assist to boost braking pressure when needed. The vehicle even comes with Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control which will help maintain stability on slippery surfaces, especially corners. In off-road conditions (yes, a 4×2 can also go off-road), the driver can get help from Hill Start Assist) and Hill Descent Control as well as a Brake Override System.

For those who find the length of a pick-up truck intimidating, especially when reverse parking, there are reverse sensors in the rear bumper to help. These provide audible assistance to the driver, complemented by a 4-zone graphic in the instrument panel to indicate the location and distance to obstacles. So there’s no more guesswork when parking and no stress either.

Manufacturers used to give less attention to safety where pick-up trucks were concerned but that is not the case today. The construction and safety systems are also comparable to passenger cars and in the case of the latest D-MAX range which ASEAN NCAP has crash-tested, the findings warrant the maximum safety rating of 5 stars.

Comfortable and safe double cab
Inside the double cab of the D-Max Auto Plus 4×2, the seats have a woven-texture fabric that is both hard-wearing and easy to clean. The seats are generously-proportioned with ample support for comfort over long periods. The driver’s seat can even be manually adjusted 6 ways to suit just about any body shape.

No replacement for displacement? Isuzu destroys that perception!

Isuzu Malaysia’s customers can expect a safer and more immersive Isuzu experience in the era of the New Normal as the country continues on its journey to recovery from the pandemic. This is the promise from Kenkichi Sogo, the company’s new Light Commercial Vehicle Division’s Chief Operating Officer, as the continuing threat of infections necessitates the enforcement of various safety measures.

Among the measures Isuzu Malaysia has initiated has been the development of an online experience including a 360-degree augmented reality showcase offering prospects an immersive look into the design and features of the latest D-Max pick-up truck before they even need to step into the showrooms. Average Monthly orders for New Isuzu D-MAX are 100% higher than for previous generation

Despite the difficult market conditions that affect the auto industry, demand for new vehicles continues although perhaps not as strongly as usual at the moment. However, for Isuzu Malaysia, the D-MAX has been showing strong demand with orders for the pick-up truck rising by over 100%. This mirrors the situation in other markets where the vastly-improved model has been launched.

Since being launched in April this year, the third generation of the D-MAX has seen average monthly bookings of over 1,200 units. With the previous generation, Isuzu Malaysia received around 500 bookings each month. According to Isuzu Malaysia’s Chief Operating Officer, Masayuki Suzuki, this trend is identical in such markets as Australia, New Zealand and Thailand where sales growth have also multiplied. Many buyers have been impressed by the sporty and versatile vehicle which has a fresh design, enhanced ergonomics and improved engineering.

“This all-new D-MAX phenomenon that has swept the various markets has been somewhat overwhelming. Needless to say, the attractive design, new and improved features and proven Isuzu reputation contributed significantly towards convincing customers to switch or upgrade to this all-new D-MAX model with its excellent value and a generous suite of features,” he said.

Lower roadtax with 1.9-litre engine size
The 1.9-litre D-MAX Premium with automatic transmission has been the most popular choice, accounting for close to 36% percent of the bookings. Although its 1.9-litre turbodiesel engine, fully compatible with Malaysia biodiesel, has a displacement which is the lowest in the market yet, the actual output is comparable to bigger engines. The engine size also makes the D-MAX popular especially to those in Peninsular Malaysia as the annual roadtax is significantly lower. In fact, 61% of overall sales have been in Peninsular Malaysia, a reverse of the traditional 60:40 balance where East Malaysia absorbed a bigger share of the vehicles.

Ever since the 1990s, Malaysians have come to appreciate the usefulness of the pick-up truck, a vehicle that is fine for town use, for weekend adventures off-road as well as workhorse duties. There have been many choices and among the popular ones today is the Isuzu D-MAX which officially goes into its third generation in the Malaysian market today.

To suit different budgets and requirements, there are no less than seven variants to choose – with double cab or single cab bodystyles, and two engine sizes. It’s all-new from the tyres up, incorporating new technologies for greater strength, reliability, efficiency and longevity… all the qualities that have made the D-MAX so popular.

Isuzu Dynamic Drive Platform
Built on a new Isuzu Dynamic Drive Platform, the all-new Isuzu D-Max employs a new ladder frame that offers improved stiffness and strength to ensure and durability. The integration of the body structure, chassis, powertrain and suspension is balanced to work together as one for better handling. The new suspension configuration and a longer wheelbase allows the engine mass to be located further behind the front wheels, resulting in more dynamic handling and a comfortable ride.

All variants have a new distinctively bold and sporty outlook that has a more SUV appeal. The stylish appearance is functional too as aerodynamic efficiency – not usually talked about with such vehicles – is improved for the new D-MAX.

X-Terrain – the flagship
For those who want the most stylish pick-up truck, the new D-MAX X-Terrain variant will be the one to get. It stands out from the rest of the range with the Valencia Orange or Sapphire Blue body colour.

This new flagship variant comes with a revised 3-litre engine that has been re-engineered and refined with numerous advancements to improve performance and engine response while reducing noise and vibration. The engine produces 190 ps/450 Nm, with peak torque starting from as low as 1,600 rpm and available up to 2,600 rpm. The revised torque curve, together with a new 6-speed automatic transmission, optimises power delivery for any condition and demand.

Exclusive features with the X-Terrain include remote engine start, rear differential lock, wet wiper system, brown leather upholstery for the seats (which have 8-way electronic adjustment including lumbar support), and a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen panel with Android Auto/wireless Apple Carplay for easy smartphone connectivity.

Advanced Driver Assist Systems
The D-MAX X-Terrain also has Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) to make driving safer and less tiring. The active systems installed are similar to those found in the latest passenger cars. These include Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Turn Assist, Pedal Misapplication Mitigation, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Manual Speed Limiter, and a Multi-Collision Brake system that applies the brakes should any of the seven airbags be deployed.

Adaptive Cruise Control maintains a safe gap with the vehicle ahead.

For less driving fatigue on long distances or at night, there’s  also Adaptive Cruise Control with stop & go function and Automatic High Beams. The Adaptive Cruise Control maintains a safe gap with other vehicles ahead and can function down to standstill, reactivating when the vehicle ahead moves off. Automatic High Beams will automatically switch to low beams when there is an oncoming vehicle to avoid dazzling the driver, so the driver of the D-MAX does not need to think about it.

Two engine choices
Customers can have style and comfort without sacrificing the proven qualities of the D-MAX which is now not only quieter and more comfortable but also a tougher, more capable and dependable as well. The Premium 4×4 Auto variants – available with either a 1.9-litre Blue Power turbodiesel or the 3-litre turbodiesel – are ideal for those who spend significant hours behind the wheel. The new comfort features and safety equipment in the cabin will ensure that even if there are many hours of motoring, it will be fatigue-free.

For the price conscious, the two Standard models offer lower running costs with their good operating efficiency. New Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain: Why other pick-up truck brands should be worried

Would you believe us if we told you that Isuzu now builds one of the coolest pick-up trucks in its segment? There’s a pretty good chance you may think we have lost it and would say anything just to get some advertising revenue from companies.

But the fact of the matter is, the new Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain (pronounced as ex-terrain) is among the coolest pick-up trucks in its segment right now. Notice that we used the term “among the coolest” instead of “the coolest”. That’s because the lifestyle pick-up truck is so hotly contested right now that all the trucks in the segment have their own value proposition.

The Ranger Wildtrak is the one that seemingly has it all in order, but reliability seems to be the only chink in Ford’s armor.

The Hilux Rouge too is quite a good balance of everything, but the ride quality is still very much utilitarian. And Toyota really needs to get its entertainment system to be more intuitive.

The Mitsubishi Triton too seems faultless but is still more of a workhorse than anything else. The new design too is very much love it or hate it. This writer still has a tough time digesting it. Sometimes it looks good, sometimes it doesn’t.

Enter the new Isuzu D-Max V-Cross X-Terrain.

The new X-Terrain is the ultimatest Isuzu pick-up truck there has been. Not ultimatest in the sense that it is indestructible, but ultimatest in the sense that there has never been an Isuzu that has so finely balanced on-road and off-road needs.

The X-Terrain is basically Isuzu’s first salvo at the premium lifestyle segment for pick-up trucks. And it is a mighty fine effort by a brand that has been synonymous with dependability and as a workhorse, but never one that you would buy if all you ever wanted to do is to carry some bicycles, some work items and that’s it.

But now though, you could consider buying an Isuzu just for your lifestyle needs, because it seems to have it all. Almost.

Let’s begin from the outside. I do think that the overall design could be better. You won’t really believe your eyes when you first see the truck, but that is because you don’t expect Isuzu to build such a truck, so it makes you go, “wow, is that really an Isuzu?”

Its design cues were supposedly shaped by learnings from the same wind tunnel that shaped Japan’s iconic bullet train – the Shinkansen. It may be aerodynamic, but that doesn’t make it a great looking truck. Perhaps it is just something very un-Isuzu like. Don’t get us wrong though, it not not ugly and it still has presence, lots of it and most of that is because of the sheer size of the truck. Visually, it looks about the same size as the Ranger Wildtrak.

The rims are of a love it or hate it design, and we imagine that some buyers would swap those at the first chance they get.

The truck bed though has a unique ‘sliding cargo tray’ that rolls out and makes it easier to store heavier items. This is especially handy when you use anti-slip mats and want to store items towards the back of the bed. Isuzu even thought of drilling holes at all ends of the cargo tray so you can use a cargo net to hold your ‘barang-barang’ in place. This is the type of thoughtfulness you can expect from a brand that has been making work trucks for eons.

The interior is again un-Isuzu like. A 9-inch touch screen infotainment system dominates the dashboard and offers Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity.

The Apple Carplay connects wirelessly, though this feature is sadly not mentioned in the brochure but is one of the most useful technologies when trying to run a business while driving. Yes, Apple’s Siri is that good.

Entertainment and comfort has never really been the hallmarks of an Isuzu, but the company has hit it right in the nail.

The seats for example, are in brown combination leather, and feature something called the Anti Vibration Elastic Comfort foam. This means that none but the harshest of vibrations will be felt by your body. I am happy to report that the ride on the highway and at low speeds was comfortable and you don’t really feel it creeping up your spine.

The ambient sounds that protrude back into the cabin though is still very much like a 90s pick-up truck. But this is a typical character of a pick-up. In fact, the only pick-up that has successfully made the cabin sound like that of a premium sedan (nevermind feel like one) is the Ranger Wildtrak thanks to the clever usage of anti-noise cancellation technology.

On the topic of technology, if you are of the opinion that pick-up trucks don’t need all that luxurious finishing since it is going to be used for work and perhaps parked out in the sun most of the time, well, Isuzu has a trick up its sleeve. The windscreen in the X-Terrain features a layer of infrared absorbent material (the first of its kind in its class) that reduces the penetration of infra-red , UVA and UVB rays into the cabin and thus reduces premature damage.

The ride character though is also typical of a pick-up truck, but it feels sure footed thanks to a bigger than ever chassis that is also 20% stiffer. Which means more strength and road compliance. And to ensure the truck doesn’t hop and skip on the road with all that stiffness, Isuzu now uses three leaf springs instead of the previous four. To further ensure passenger comfort, the semi-elliptical leaf-springs are complemented by gas shocks. Not entirely new technology here, but one that has proven to be reliable, and somewhat comfortable.

At heart of the new X-Terrain is the same 3.0-litre engine (code: 4JJ3-TCX), but massaged and revitalized to produce 190PS and 450Nm of torque. This is lower than the power figures put out by the Ranger Wildtrak and the Hilux Rogue, but somehow the X-Terrain feels more eager to accelerate. Probably because of the lightweight aluminium propeller shaft that requires less effort to transfer power to the rear wheels, making the car feel more eager during acceleration.

For the curious among us, the aluminum propeller shaft saves 4kg’s in weight as compared to the regular steel shaft. Isuzu says this also helps to extend the lifespan of the drivetrain as the reduced weight requires less inertia, which in turn reduces the amount of torque needed to spin it, thus reducing wear and tear.

The Isuzu D-Max V-Cross X-Terrain had proven itself to be a worthy entry into the world of premium pick-up trucks. Even when it comes to safety technologies, the new X-Terrain boasts two pages of safety systems in its brochure. It literally has everything you could want in a pick-up truck.

Adaptive cruise control? Check.
Pedal mis-application mitigation? Check.
Autonomous emergency braking? Of course.
Rear cross traffic alert? This truck may be the first to offer such a technology.

There is no denying the fact that the new D-Max V-Cross X-Terrain is a great pick-up truck. Anything the competition has, this Isuzu has too. And the one thing that Isuzu has that the rest don’t – a seven-year warranty! Isuzu has finally shown its hand, and it is a royal flush.

The only thing that Isuzu could have done better is to perhaps give it a shorter name.

The Isuzu D-Max V-Cross X-Terrain is now available in Malaysia for a little under RM142,000.

Although there are a number of choices, the Toyota Hilux has been dominant in the regional pick-up truck market for many years. However, in some markets like Thailand (the second largest truck market in the world), it faces a strong challenge from the Isuzu D-MAX. The numbers can be close in some months, which has encouraged Isuzu to try harder and offer a better product to win more customers.

It has done this with the new third generation and Malaysia is the fifth country to launch this latest generation which made its debut in Thailand. We understand that its arrival in Malaysia is earlier than what was expected.  The Chief Operating Officer of Isuzu Malaysia’s Light Commercial Division, Masayuki Suzuki, said that the fast-tracked launch of the all-new D-MAX was made possible through the support of Isuzu Motors Ltd that views Malaysia as a strategic market.

Powertrain choices – 1.9 litres or 3.0 litres
It is available in single or double cab bodystyles and powered with a choice of two turbodiesel 4-cylinder commonrail engines – the award-winning RZ-4E 1.9-litre powerplant or a revised 4JJ-3TCX 3-litre engine. Strong road presence with sportiness
While undergoing a full model change, the overall appearance of the new D-MAX retains many of the styling elements that identify it as an Isuzu product. Developed on a design theme of bold and sporty, it continues to have a strong road presence while presenting a more athletic and dynamic stance.

The large unitary bumper design improves airflow and minimizes the coefficient of friction, thanks to the lessons learned in the same wind tunnel that shaped Japan’s famed Shinkansen bullet trains. To further improve aerodynamics and also improve wet-weather visibility, aerofoil wipers are fitted in the X-Terrain model. These wipers can be manually or automatically operated and feature the washer nozzle integrated into the wiper arm, providing a smoother and cleaner wash.

The overall dimensions have been increased with a 30 mm longer wheelbase and to further achieve the sleek silhouette, the bonnet height has been raised 15 mm while the door sill has also been raised 20 mm. The roof line has been lowered by 10 mm giving the vehicle its sporty profile. With the increased wheelbase, cabin access is easier through the larger rear door opening that has been increased by 25 mm.

Cabin spaciousness is improved in almost every aspect with better seating comfort for the rear passengers. They also get cool air delivered to them through dedicated vents and can recharge their devices with a USB port rated at 2.1A for quicker charging.

Improved interior with latest features
Since the first generation, the D-MAX interior has had a passenger car-like feel and the latest generation enhances this in design and functions. The dashboard has trim edges with an accentuated stitching effect to give a sense of craftsmanship while many of the interior trim accents are finished in satin chrome for a clean, classy look.

The interior designers revised the driving position to be more sporty (with a smaller steering wheel and 8-way power adjustment) and the driver can now reach the centre console more easily as its surface is higher and it is also wider. The automatic transmission selector has been shortened with reduced travel and the selector itself features a lighted gear indicator, the first in its class to boast this premium feature.

Using a large 4.2-inch high-definition TFT-LCD display flanked by the speedometer and tachometer, the Multi Information Display (MID) presents vital information on the vehicle functions. In the D-MAX X-Terrain, it also highlights the various driving situations, particularly the Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS)  functions and warnings.

Complementing the MID is the new infotainment display in the central console. Featuring a 7-inch WXGA display in the Premium variant and a 9-inch display in the X-Terrain, the system has Apple Carplay and Android Auto as well as Bluetooth connectivity and voice commands can also be used for handsfree operation.

In the past, things like the audio system were very basic in pick-ups but not today. The system in the new D-MAX has 8 speakers with ceiling-mounted tweeters, dash-top tweeters and new 6x9s mounted in the front doors. The good sound quality would certainly make motoring more enjoyable.

The seats in the D-MAX have been completely redesigned to not only provide better comfort and support but also give greater whiplash protection. The backrest springs use a new design that disperses body pressure more evenly while the cushion has dual density padding with a softer centre section and stiffer bolsters, giving better support without sacrificing comfort. The seat cushion pads also feature Anti Vibration Elastic Comfort foam that can absorb vibrations more quickly than conventional cushion material.

The tailgate is a heavy panel that is partly that way because it is sometimes used to support a heavy load. To lessen the opening and closing effort, there is a Tailgate Assist feature (in the X-Terrain) that uses dampers to soften the opening action and also assist in closing. The sliding cargo tray that has appreciated by many owners is now standard.

Two powertrain choices
The 1.9-litre Blue Power turbodiesel engine made its appearance in the previous D-MAX and has already proven that downsizing is not a disadvantage at all. In fact, it has even better performance, thanks to advanced technologies. But the Isuzu engineers have not stopped making it better and the latest version in the new D-MAX has a new turbocharger to give better response and improved top-end performance.

As for the 4JJ3-TCX engine which has a 3-litre displacement, this has also been improved to deliver extra power but run more efficiently and quietly. It is also said to have greater durability compared to the previous generation engine. The air intake has now been moved from the fender to below the bonnet allowing for ram-air effect and to allow the engine to draw cooler and more dense air.

Customers can choose either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission, depending on the variant. New ratios offer better delivery of power to the ground, capitalizing on the new power characteristics of the engines. The new manual transmissions now feature a ring detent on the gear lever to prevent accidental engagement of reverse gear.

New too is the Terrain Command dial, now positioned on the dashboard for quicker access. Its operation is said to be one of the quickest in the market with switching between 2H and 4H taking only 0.61 seconds (vs 1.94 seconds previously). The X-Terrain also benefits from having a differential lock as standard. Actuation is via a button next to the gear selector and the solenoid activates a dog clutch that locks the rear differential in 4L, sending power equally to its 265/60 R18 rear tyres for added traction. The system automatically disengages when the vehicle exceeds 30 km/h to prevent damage to the drivetrain.

Adding to its off-roading prowess, the D-MAX can easily cross water up to 800 mm deep, which is  almost double its previous wading capability. The underside of the vehicle is also better protected with a 1.5 mm steel skidplate up front where the vehicle is most susceptible to damage, a 6 mm steel sump guard to protect the engine and gearbox, and a 5 mm reinforced resin wind deflector for a final layer of protection. These and the ground clearance of 240 mm (for models with 18-inch wheels) contribute to the all-terrain capabilities of the D-MAX.

A better chassis and structure
In areas that cannot be seen, much engineering work has been done to improve the durability and go-anywhere capability of the D-MAX. The tougher chassis is the largest in the 1-ton pick-up segment while the 8 crossmembers – the most among its competitors – help improve torsional rigidity by 20% and longitudinal rigidity by 26%. Greater rigidity is better for driving dynamics and as the structure does not shake so much, the vehicle’s overall durability is improved.

If comparing to the previous D-MAX, drivers will notice it corners with minimal body roll. This is something that is inherent in trucks but the Isuzu engineers have made adjustments to the suspension settings that result in a more dynamic feel that will give confidence during fast cornering.

With the extension of the wheelbase, the engine is positioned further back in the chassis. Not only does this provide more room for the crumple zone, it also places more weight behind the front wheels for better handling. The further benefit is a shorter linkage to the gearbox allowing for more precise and quicker shifts.

To improve durability, the propeller shaft is now made of aluminium which not only saves 4 kgs but also has less inertia, thereby reducing torque lash resulting in longer life for the drivetrain. To further reduce unsprung weight, the rear suspension now has 3 leafsprings instead of the previous four. The ride has also improved with increased travel, newly-designed springs and the repositioning of the shock absorber top mount.

Top-class safety
With a maximum 5-star safety rating from ASEAN NCAP, the new D-Max offers superior protection to the occupants as well as other road users. Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) are available in selected variants and these use a stereo camera and radar to scan the road ahead. Other sensors detect the presence of vehicles in the blind spot, and help the driver to remain aware of possible dangers that can result in an accident.

Besides autonomous emergency braking when necessary (if the driver does not act to prevent a collision), the D-MAX can also offer some degree of autonomous motoring. This is possible by the Adaptive Control which keeps a safe distance from a vehicle in front and can operate right down to standstill, and restart automatically. However, the driver still needs to pay attention and be ready to act when necessary.

Incidentally, the brakes have been upgraded with larger 320 mm diameter and 30 mm thick disc rotors up front while the rear drums have increased swept area to provide better all-round performance, improved heat dissipation for longer service life and quieter performance.

The length of a pick-up truck can be daunting for many people, especially those new to using such vehicles. Isuzu makes it less stressful when parking with not only a rearview camera but there is also Rear Cross Traffic Alert to help when reversing out of a parking bay. If a vehicle is approaching from either side, the driver will be alerted.

Remote Start used to be a feature that, in movies, was for the owner to start the engine from a distance in case there was a bomb under the car. However, in the real world, such a feature is used for something much less fatal. In the D-MAX, it can be used to start the engine and by doing so, the air-conditioner can also be activated to cool down the cabin. So when you get in, things should be cooler and more comfortable. In the event the owner forgets the engine has been started, it will automatically shut down after 10 minutes. Of course, while it is running, the doors remain locked unless the owner (with the remote control key fob) opens the doors.

Explaining the speedy introduction, the Chief Operating Officer of Isuzu Malaysia’s Light Commercial Division, Masayuki Suzuki, said that the fast-tracked launch of the new D-Max was made possible through the support of Isuzu Motors Ltd. that views Malaysia as a strategic market. It is important enough that the company even invested it having its own assembly plant locally (in Pekan, Pahang).

“We are extremely thrilled that this impressive all-new Isuzu D-Max has been made available in Malaysia much earlier than expected. As the fifth country in the world to launch this model after its global introduction in Thailand, it stands as testament to the strong commitment from Isuzu Motors towards ensuring that the Malaysian market enjoys the latest selection of choice Isuzu vehicles,” he said.

Mr. Suzuki said the D-Max has an estimated price range between RM89,000 and RM145,000, depending on the variant and subject to government approvals. He said that those who wish to be the first owners can place their booking from today at all authorized Isuzu dealerships nationwide.

“The all-new Isuzu D-Max has made scores of new fans in the markets it has been introduced in and I believe that the same will happen here in Malaysia. This new model evokes a new level of interest in owning and driving a pick-up truck hence we have initiated this pre-launch booking programme to ensure those who have eagerly awaited the arrival of the new model will be among the very first to take delivery once it has been officially launched,” he said.

The latest D-Max model has been extensively developed to exceed the normal perimeters of a pick-up truck while adding an emotive dimension to its highly dependable and impressively-capable character. 2 bodystyles, 2 engine choices
As before, there will be single and double cab bodystyles, and customers will have a choice of the award-winning RZ-4E 1.9-litre powerplant or a revised 4JJ-3TCX 3-litre engine. Both engines, which deliver strong output, have already been proven for their durability, reliability and fuel efficiency.

The new D-MAX has been tested by ASEAN NCAP and received the maximum rating of 5 stars.

ASEAN NCAP, the independent organization which evaluates vehicle safety, has already tested the new D-MAX and after analysing data from a crash test as well as other results, the maximum 5-star rating was awarded.
