Isuzu Malaysia

The Isuzu D-Max Single Cab is gearing up to conquer the 31st annual Borneo Safari, known as one of the world’s most challenging off-road adventures. With its exceptional versatility and dependability, the Isuzu D-Max Single Cab has been selected as the official workhorse for the event, making its mark in Malaysia’s automotive scene.

This hard-working one-ton truck is designed to cater to a wide range of tasks, from urban goods deliveries to tackling heavy loads in rugged terrains. Isuzu Malaysia is making a unique impression by offering two engine options for the Single Cab, enabling customers to meet their specific business needs. Moreover, the Single Cab boasts a competent four-wheel drive system with a standard differential lock, making it well-equipped to navigate various terrains.

Two units of the 1.9-litre Isuzu D-Max Single Cab will be put to the test in this year’s Borneo Safari, joining three Isuzu D-Max X-Terrains as the official media vehicles. Isuzu Malaysia’s CEO, Shunsuke Okazoe, selected the Single Cab for its exceptional capabilities as a workhorse. The Borneo Safari is renowned for its challenging jungle tracks, and the Isuzu D-Max’s reputation for dependability and strength has solidified its status as the preferred choice for this grueling event.

As the returning Diamond Sponsor, Isuzu Malaysia recently handed over sponsorship documents and the keys to the official media vehicles for the event, showcasing their commitment to supporting this iconic adventure challenge.

The Borneo Safari is set to commence on October 29, 2023, in front of the Sabah Tourism Board office. Over the course of a week, participants will navigate the treacherous mountainous regions of Sook and Ranau before returning to Kota Kinabalu.

Isuzu Malaysia is partnering with Tourism Malaysia, the Sabah Tourism Board, and Red Springs Sdn Bhd to create a captivating web video series aimed at promoting the Borneo Safari and Sabah as an adventurous destination. The series will highlight the formidable challenges of the Borneo Safari and offer viewers a chance to win exclusive event merchandise through a watch-and-win contest to be held after the event. Stay updated on the latest developments and thrilling moments of the event by following Isuzu Malaysia’s social media platforms.

The Isuzu D-Max pickup truck line now includes reverse cameras as standard equipment, making driving and owning one safer and more convenient. With the addition of this function, parking will no longer be difficult, especially when hauling large loads, which the D-Max is more than capable of doing.

While the top-of-the-line X-Terrain and high-spec Premium variations have benefited from this function since their launch, the entry-level Standard 1.9-litre versions now have it in response to trader requests for the parking aid’s secure use in theirs.

As Malaysia continues its recovery from the depressed years of the pandemic, new vehicle sales are also growing. Last year’s record Total Industry Volume of 720,658 units – the highest ever since the Malaysian Automotive Association began keeping records in 1967 – already indicated the upward trend.

While the commercial vehicle segment’s share remained at 11%, the total number of vehicles sold rose (compared to 2021) by 39.9% or 22,488 units to reach 78,885 units. Within this segment, Isuzu Malaysia Sdn Bhd (IMSB) again topped the list of brands with combined retail sales of 6,546 units, including light, medium and prime mover trucks.

It was the highest ever volume in the company’s history while capturing the market-leading position again as Malaysia’s top-selling truck brand for the 9th consecutive time and also the top-selling light-duty truck for the 13th time.

Ever since the latest generation of the Isuzu D-MAX made its debut in Malaysia in 2021, sales have kept growing. Already popular in its previous generation, the substantial changes in styling and more premium nature of the new truck attracted even more customers.

With average monthly orders much higher than for previous generation, it’s not surprising that the total number sold in 2022 was just slightly short of being double the number achieved in 2021. During 2022, Isuzu Malaysia delivered 9,211 units of the D-MAX nationwide, exceeding its original target of 8,000 units and eclipsing the previous record of 6,480 units in 2016. Given the disruptions to supply that affected the whole industry, perhaps the number could have been even higher if more vehicles had been available.

From the fashion world back to nature – that will be the journey for the Isuzu D-MAX when it once again participates in the Borneo Safari International Off-Road Challenge. This will be the 14th year that Isuzu Malaysia is supporting the event which was not run in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Isuzu Malaysia is providing 3 units of the D-MAX X-Terrain as Official Media Vehicles during the week-long event organised by the Sabah Four Wheel Drive Association (SFWDA). The vehicles were recently handed over by Isuzu Malaysia’s Marketing Manager, Alan Lee, to the association’s President, Hj. Faez Nordin.

When Zhang Ying Xuan went shopping at Pavilion KL in August, she did not expect that her purchases would get her a new Isuzu D-MAX X-Terrain truck as well. The truck was the Grand Prize in the mall’s Tokyo Street 11th Anniversary celebrations ‘Shop & Win‘ contest.

Due to the proximity of her workplace within walking-distance to the mall, Ms Zhang visits Pavilion KL regularly. So she tried her luck by submitting 5 contest entries with receipts worth over RM300 during the month-long contest, and her entry was the lucky one.

Isuzu Malaysia Sdn Bhd now has a medium and heavy-duty (MHD) truck dealership in Sabah to provide a complete range of sales and aftersales services to customers. The first MHD truck dealer is Universal Motor Sdn Bhd which is located in the state’s capital city of Kota Kinabalu. With this new MHD dealership, Isuzu Malaysia now has 12 MHD dealerships nationwide.

The dealership, which occupies a land area of 3.5 acres, has a total of 20 service bays, 13 of which are for light-duty trucks, medium, heavy-duty trucks and prime movers. The remaining 7 bays are for the D-MAX pick-up truck, a popular Isuzu model with multi-role capabilities for business and personal use.

There was a time when the pick-up truck was seen as just a workhorse, a vehicle that was used in rough conditions and the important requirement was durability, not style. The manufacturers therefore made it simple, focussing on the engineering to make it lasting, and capable for tough tasks.

That image gradually changed and in Malaysia, it changed in the late 1990s when the law changed to permit ownership of pick-up trucks for personal use rather than business use. Overnight, a new segment was created and because of the go-anywhere capability of the pick-up truck, it became a popular choice for those who had an adventurous lifestyle.

And being a lifestyle vehicle also meant that it had to be stylish. Isuzu responded to this trend and today, its latest D-Max X-Terrain combines style with the ruggedness expected of such vehicles. No longer would be it embarrassing to drive a pick-up truck to a hotel lobby or have to park it some distance and walk to an event. Today’s trucks like the D-MAX makes a statement for their owners.

It’s therefore not surprising that Isuzu Malaysia has chosen to be associated with the KL Fashion Week (KLFW), now in its 10th year in 2022. The company is supplying the D-MAX X-Terrain as the Official Vehicle of the event which has the theme ‘The Bigger, The Better’ (which also seems appropriately related to the D-MAX).

Commenting on their involvement in the 2022 KL Fashion Week, Isuzu Malaysia’s Chief Operating Officer, Kenkichi Sogo, said: “With its cutting-edge design, superlative features and extraordinary go-anywhere, do-anything capabilities, the Isuzu D-Max is all about challenging the norm and allowing you to forge your fondest memories. Together with the KLFW, we aim to bring forward novel, imaginative and inspiring designs to share with the Malaysian audience.”

As the event’s Official Ultimate Lifestyle Vehicle sponsor, the D-MAX X-Terrain showcases a fresh dimension to its identity, one that hinges on its appeal as an urban vehicle and not one purely focused on its talents as a capable cargo-mover and dependable off-roader.

Being the flagship of the range, the D-MAX X-Terrain has a premium look and feel within, with high-quality materials used throughout. It also has a passenger car-like environment which offers comfort that would be expected of a lifestyle vehicle.

Standard are high-tech features like a 360˚ Around View Monitor and wireless charging for compatible smartphones as well as Android Auto and wireless Apple Carplay connectivity. The driver also has a host of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems to make driving safer as well as less tiring.

The D-MAX X-Terrain will be featured prominently at the KL Fashion Week which will be on from August 15 to August 21 at the Pavilion Kuala Lumpur in Bukit Bintang. Three units will be showcased – a Valencia Orange unit that depicts the truck’s fun and adventure nature;  an Onyx Black version that highlights its stylish and premium side; and a Silky Pearl White unit which presents a sophisticated and intelligent character.

COVID-19

Before the SUV segment began to grow rapidly, interest in alternatives to passenger cars was focussed on pick-up trucks and with Malaysia regulations having been changed to allow registration of such vehicles for private use, the segment expanded rapidly. From being a mere workhorse with basic features, pick-up trucks were transformed into vehicles that could also be used for motoring on weekdays and adventures on weekends.

Isuzu was among the manufacturers that responded to this new demand and with its experience in such vehicles, it came up with the D-MAX which had all the capabilities of a 4×4 truck and the comfort and convenience of a passenger car.

The D-MAX is today in its third generation which was launched in Malaysia last year and redefined the look, feel and performance of pick-up trucks. From its workhorse Single Cab model to the sophisticated and feature-packed top-of-the-line X-Terrain variant, Isuzu has an ideal vehicle for virtually every type of customer and budget.

143% growth this year
From the time it was launched, its sales kept growing and set a new sales record for Isuzu Malaysia. With 4,237 new registrations recorded from January to June this year, the company has seen an impressive 143% growth in D-MAX sales over the same period in 2021. Significantly, the volume in the first half of this year almost matches the total achieved for the entire 2021. This puts the brand in third spot in the pick-up truck segment.

“Since the introduction of the all-new Isuzu D-Max, we have seen a growing interest in pick-up truck usage, particularly from first-time buyers and upgraders who have been impressed by the way the new D-MAX has blurred the lines between a tough and capable pick-up truck and the comfort and sophistication of a family saloon,” said Shunsuke Okazoe, CEO of Isuzu Malaysia.

Blue Power is popular
With flexible engine performance, exemplary fuel efficiency, reliability, the 1.9-litre Blue Power variants have undoubtedly been the most popular choice among Malaysians, making up close to 80% of the total sales. And they also have another benefit for owners – the lowest road tax in the truck segment.

The flagship X-Terrain variant has also positioned Isuzu at a level which it has not been strongly represented before. 10% of the sales volume this year has been of this variant which has been a highly attractive proposition in the lifestyle segment. Besides offering premium comfort, refinement and style, it also has a host of top-notch safety features that are comparable to passenger cars.

“The X-Terrain has gained a strong following, particularly among urban users. Many have found the vehicle to be the ideal extension of their lifestyle activities offering the ideal balance of space, capability, comfort and safety,” said Kenkichi Sogo, COO of Isuzu Malaysia. “With the recent updates made to the flagship variant such as new colours, welcome light, scuff plates, wireless Qi charger and Around View Monitor, it is an even more desirable vehicle that allows owners to do more without boundaries.”

8 variants for different needs
The D-MAX range has 8 variants to suit different needs, whether for personal use or business purposes – or both. Most variants have 4×4 capability and can tackle any sort of terrain. There is also a 4×2 automatic variant available to provide long-distance travellers and urban users the flexibility and versatility while enjoying lower running costs.

The advanced 1.9-litre RZ4E-TC engine has proven its fuel-saving capabilities in the DuraMiles Challenge. A D-MAX powered by the engine and with a 1-ton payload on board travelled by a lengthy route from Pekan in Pahang (where Isuzu has its assembly plant) to Shah Alam, Selangor and its average fuel consumption was 13.7 kms/litre over 1,145 kms. You can read more about that achievement here.
