KLIMS

Well, hello there! Having seen the Toyota FT-1 Concept at the recent KL International Motorshow 2018, it appears the much-anticipated 2019 Toyota Supra will look pretty similar, as promised. Here are two leaked images, supposedly from a German Toyota distributor who sent them out to prospective buyers, according to AutoExpress.

“The all-new Toyota Supra is due to be officially revealed at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit in January, but these leaked images have revealed the car’s final appearance a month in advance….

The photos, believed to have been sent out in marketing correspondence to prospective customers in Germany by Toyota themselves, give us a clear look at both the front and rear of the fifth generation of the iconic Supra coupe. The images show that the new Toyota Supra’s styling will remain fairly faithful to the FT-1 concept from 2014 – albeit with a narrower body and less prominent snout – with details like the concept’s front splitter and ‘double bubble’ roof making it into the production car”Auto Express.

The venue was a LOT better this time around. Okay so I thought I’d start this article off on a positive note, and one of the things I’m happy to say is that KLIMS 2018 chose a much better venue than the PWTC of past shows. MITEC, while still not ideal, was a much more conducive location to host a motorshow, i.e. outside the city centre, easy to get to and easier to park. More importantly from a media standpoint, the actual halls themselves were a great deal better for photography and videography, as can be seen in the video below.

Held from 23rd November to 2nd December 2018 at the Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre (MITEC) at Jalan Dutamas KL, the overall organisation of the event was a whole lot better too this time around, the company handling the public-relations and communications and information dissemination, Sanns Communication, did a remarkable job in keeping us all up-to-date with the latest happenings on a daily basis.

Speaking of which, media facilities at the event site were also improved this time around, with proper work areas, lockers and sustenance. The last being crucial for many media who attended the show more than once for durations that spanned 10- to 12-hours at a time. That being said, the media area was too small, and the wi-fi was below par to handle the multitude of users all on-line, uploading articles ‘heavy’ with photos and videos, thus it kept hanging.

And on that note we get to why this article is headlined the way it is. Anyone who knows me in the industry will attest to the fact that I call it as I see it. For better or worse, I’m not the type to blow sunshine up anyone’s horoscope; never have, never will.

The thing is, if KLIMS was just called the KL Motorshow, or the Malaysia Car Show, then it would be alright, but it isn’t; the word International is in its title, big and bold, and that’s where the bottom falls-out, spectacularly. You can’t call it an ‘international’ motorshow if more than half of the brands available in the country are not represented, and I’m not even referring to brands that aren’t available here, which would be understandable, if not accepted.

I’m referring to all the known and locally-available European brands, both for the masses and for the more affluent. Brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Renault, VW, Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Porsche, Aston Martin, Bentley, Jaguar, Land Rover, MINI, (yes, part of BMW, but I’m on a roll), and Rolls-Royce, all have showrooms and dealerships locally, and yet were missing from an ‘international’ motorshow held on home turf. From the east-side, even Mazda, who have been having one of their best years, were not at KLIMS 2018, nor were Infiniti and Subaru.

The reason for this lack of participation might very well be that KLIMS is not a sales show. Unlike other regional shows like the Bangkok International Motorshow (BIMS) and the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), (<–links) that allow visitors to actually buy the cars on display – I recall one BIMS where a specially made Rolls-Royce ‘BIMS Edition’ was snapped-up even before the first public day – KLIMS is a publicity show for branding and awareness only. It is understandable then why some carmakers might find the return-on-investment less than tempting, especially if their ‘branding and awareness’ are both already very healthy.

I feel this is a travesty though. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that the car industry is a business, and like any business, the bottom-line matters, profits are a must, and every cent has to be accounted for. The aforementioned no-shows aren’t charity organisations after all, and the all-important ROI is always, always seen to first and foremost. Let’s face it, a lot can be done with the circa million-ringgit plus price tag that accompanies participating in KLIMS, and if they aren’t allowed to sell their cars to the visitors, then why bother? Rhetorical question.

In regards to that last paragraph, I personally think KLIMS should rethink its stance on not allowing sales to be carried out at the show. I honestly see no harm in it at all, and might in fact even spur more visitor turnout, because anyone shopping for a new car could easily cover all the vehicles they’ve shortlisted under one roof, one shot as they say. As an example, at BIMS (<–link)  in March this year, a staggering 42,499 vehicles were sold. No, that’s not a typo. KLIMS could actually assist the annual automotive market TIV.

As for the manufacturers themselves, ROI aside (if that’s at all possible), I hope you rethink your stance on participation at KLIMS in future. This is after all our motorshow, the one that we as a country are hosting, and you being part of this country – insofar as Malaysians are buying your cars – I strongly feel that your brand should be represented. As it stands the manufacturer participation at KLIMS 2018 was far, far from ‘international’.

That being said, I’m really proud and happy to say that those who did participate did a fantastic job, truly. It was obvious that they took a lot of trouble to ensure their pavilions were as spectacular as possible, and they succeeded brilliantly. The pavilions were noteworthy enough to be classified as ‘international’, that I can say without hesitation, so good job, pats on the back all around.

It’s been 5-years since the last KLIMS, (<–link) you can read why we didn’t like it in the past, and while this article may sound like I still feel the same way, I don’t. There has been a lot of improvement from half a decade ago, noticeable ones, like the ones I mentioned at the start of this article, but it’s not there yet. There’s still a lot to do, and long way to go, if we want to be mentioned in the same breath as BIMS & GIIAS. I’m not even going to bring the Tokyo Motor Show (TMS) into the picture for obvious reasons.

If there’s one thing besides local importer participation that I can suggest, it’s more peripheral activities are needed for KLIMS. The reason why the TMS, BIMS & GIIAS are so successful is because there’s something for everyone at their shows, not just those interested in new cars. Tuners, ICE, Accessories, Modders, Classics, Restomods, Bikes, Used Cars, Go karts, Car Clubs, Die-Cast Centres, Toys, Games, any & all kinds of car related shi… stuff, etc. are all part of some of the aforementioned motorshows, and the crowds love it. It then becomes a fun family outing, more than just a motorshow that appeals to those interested in cars.

All said and done, it must be said that KLIMS 2018 was an improvement over 5-years ago, there’s still a long way to go, but I for one feel a lot better about the way things are looking for the future. Good job KLIMS, here’s hoping for even greater things for the next installment! – Chris Wee.

(more…)

One of the things that was playing at the back of our minds in regards to KLIMS 2018, was how it was going to be insofar as crowd attendance was concerned. And with that in mind, we headed back to MITEC, the new venue of the KL International Motorshow, on Sunday 25th, technically the first weekend of the show. This is what it looked like! Wait for the surprise at the end…

Another big surprise was the appearance of the Proton R3 Racing Team (below), who’d just won the S1K, or Sepang 1000km Race the day before, and we managed to catch their full interview and meet-the-fans session at the Proton pavilion…

Of course as expected the crowd at the abovementioned Proton pavilion was massive, packed with those who came to see the new X70 SUV, which will be officially launched on 12th December (probably at KL Convention Centre) during which Proton will FINALLY reveal its price…

The 2-wheel section of KLIMS was participated by Kawasaki Malaysia, Benelli and Honda, who showcased the awesome new GoldWing Tourer, remarkable…

It was also heartening to see that Peugeot was getting quite a lot of visitors, many were enthralled by the new Peugeot 308 GTi

Unfortunately, as previously mentioned, there is no official Supercar representation at KLIMS 2018, however, thanks to the ‘peripheral’ pavilions, there was still some eye-candy to ogle… we’re referring to the cars of course…

We’ll be visiting the show again before it ends on 2nd December 2018, so stay tuned for our wrap-up coverage!

Well, as we’ve always said, nobody wants to read about a motorshow, so without further ado here goes! In alphabetical order, culminating with the gallery all the guys scroll to first of course, enjoy! (Photos by Piston.my and MotoMalaya.net)

GIRLS @ KLIMS 2018!

Now here’s something that I personally feel every Motorshow should have, a section for classic cars! I don’t think I’m the only classic car fan to visit KLIMS (or any motorshow for that matter) so let’s keep this going!

Nice one Rukshan and friends @ MyClassic Cars (<– link to their FB page)good show!

To the organisers of KLIMS, please provide better lighting next time. Like I’ve always said, ‘if you’re gonna do it, do it well’.Chris Wee.

(NB: Caveat – That fantastic silver Porsche 911 in the photo gallery above was part of the Tom’s Stickers Motorsports (<– link) pavilion on Level 2 of KLIMS, next to the MyClassic Cars display)

Following our previous report on KLIMS or the Kuala Lumpur International Motorshow, we attended the Press Day on 22nd November 2018, and right-off the bat, it’s safe to say that the new venue for KLIMS at the Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre (MITEC) outside downtown KL is definitely a better location, not just in terms of accessibility, but also the floor space and allocated display area. But before we get into that, here’s the video of the official launch ceremony for KLIMS 2018!

Everything also seems a lot better organised this time around, especially in terms of handling the media and providing a proper set-up for us to work. There was free flow of food and drinks in the designated press room, although the room itself was a bit small, considering the number of media personnel who showed up to cover the launch and press day of KLIMS 2018. There was also no designated rest area; let’s not forget that all-in, it was at least a 10-hour day on our feet for many of us. Something to look into for the next one. Here’s our first walkabout video, which we took even before the official launch ceremony. Kudos to all the car brands who participated!

Unfortunately, while the venue itself was a lot better, manufacturer participation was definitely wanting, for apart from Peugeot, Citroen and DS Automobiles, there wasn’t a single other European carmaker in attendance. No Audi, BMW, Volvo or Mercedes-Benz. The latter was represented only thanks to Petronas who grafted what looked like an entire petrol station into KLIMS 2018, replete with a Kedai Mesra shop, while the only Supercars (apart from the Toyota FT-1 in the second video below of course) were what the peripheral pavilions brought in.

That being said, those who did participate put in a tremendous amount of effort to ensure their pavilions looked top notch! Seriously, many of them looked like they belonged in overseas motorshows like BIMS, GIIAS & TMS. Still, at least we were finally able to bring you this ‘live’ coverage of the new Proton X70 SUV, with no restrictions on photos this time. However, while fully expecting to finally learn the official price of the X70 at KLIMS, we were told that the price will be officially announced only on 12th December at the launch extravaganza…

Undoubtedly though, the star of KLIMS 2018 is the incredible Toyota FT-1, which is also known among fan-boys as the new Supra. It definitely deserved it’s own short video….

And in no particular order, here are more videos from KLIMS 2018! (KLIMS 2018 runs from today 23rd Nov to 2nd Dec 2018)

Video: Ford Malaysia put on a superb show for their new Mustang and much-anticipated Ranger Raptor, whose price was announced at RM199,888!

Video: The upstairs hall at KLIMS was dominated by a huge Petronas pavilion, with its own Kedai Mesra, as well as the Motorcycles section…

Video: Perodua unveils the X-Concept and teases a new SUV for 2019…

KLIMS 2018 Photo Gallery….

I’ve never liked KLIMS. No, really, to me it was without a doubt the worst motorshow of the region. Badly organised, always in a shambles and no-one (especially the media) knew what was going on and when. But the biggest, most obvious error in judgment was its physical location. The PWTC or Putra World Trade Centre is a great building, but holding a massive motorshow within its confines was never going to be a good idea. This was akin to holding the World Cup in a futsal stadium. Here’s a good example below from KLIMS 2013: where in the world have you ever seen an International Motorshow with a ceiling that low?

The floor area was just too small, and crowd underestimation always meant wall-to-wall visitors with little or no breathing space, much less photographic opportunity. Covering this show from a media standpoint was borderline impossible. And nowhere else in the world did one have to cross a river to get from one show hall to the next… and let’s not even talk about parking smack-dab in the middle of the city.

That being said, after a 5-year hiatus, on paper at least KLIMS 2018  (<– link) is looking better already. For starters it’s going to be held at MITEC, or the Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre in KL (Full address: 8, Jalan Dutamas 2, Kompleks Kerajaan, 50480 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur. Waze: MITEC). Boasting 50,000 square feet of floor space and more than 100 participating companies, KLIMS will be on-going from 23rd November to 2nd December 2018.

“KLIMS is Malaysia’s most established and significant automotive event. The motor show is trailblazing towards its 9th presentation after a five-year hiatus, on the theme of “Beyond Mobility” – Malaysia Automotive Association, MAA.

A few carmakers are using KLIMS 2018 as a platform for some important announcements, including our very own Proton, who are using the show to reveal the official price of its much-hyped new X70 SUV.

Ford Malaysia is bringing in the new Mustang, and will also reveal the price of the new Ranger Raptor 4×4.

UMW Toyota will unveil the new ViosCamry, the latter being revealed (<– link) late last month in Thailand.

Boon Siew Honda will launch their electric PCX scooter, new Goldwing & Fireblade at KLIMS 2018, while Kawasaki Malaysia has something up its sleeve too.

We have high-hopes for KLIMS 2018, let’s see if this time around they get it right. After 5-years and countless visits to other regional motorshows like BIMS and Gaikindo, (<– links) let’s hope the organisers have learned a thing or two (and more) about how to properly run a motorshow. For more info log on to the KLIMS 2018 Facebook (<– link) page, because the KLIMS website doesn’t seem to be responding at time of publishing…

Stay tuned as Piston.my will be there on the ground to cover KLIMS 2018!

The Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2018 (KLIMS’18), organised by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), is making its 9th presentation from 23 November to 2 December 2018 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Center (MITEC).

MAA has launched the groundwork for the most significant motor show in the country. Themed “Beyond Mobility”, preparations are underway for auto marques to showcase their exhilarating automobiles and promote their R&D achievements and visions at KLIMS’18. One of the highlights of the motor show is the electrification of cars as the global automotive industry calibrates to changing energy, environmental, and safety influences.

Datuk Aishah Ahmad, President of MAA said “The automotive industry is a revolution in motion. Technological advancement and innovative initiatives of the world’s brands are powering a mobility phenomenon that have changed the way a car drives. Consumers are also demanding better user experience, safety features and energy efficient vehicles on their powertrains.”

Honda Malaysia is participating in KLIMS’18 with the focus on Next Generation Advanced Technology. Toichi Ishiyama, MD and CEO of Honda Malaysia, said “KLIMS’18 is a great platform to showcase our advanced engineering and future vision in Malaysia. We are proud to be the pioneer in bringing hybrid into the Malaysia market and followed by Sport Hybrid where Malaysia is the only country outside Japan to introduce it. Honda Malaysia is the first Japanese mass market manufacturer to introduce the Turbo engine and we have further thrilled the market with the World’s Fastest Front-Wheel-Drive production car, Civic Type R. Not only these, Honda has also introduced the Next Generation Advanced Safety Technology, Honda SENSING to the Malaysian market.”

Toichi Ishiyama added, “Honda will further excite the Malaysia market with our Advanced Technology innovation as we strive to provide the joy and freedom of mobility to everyone. We are committed to produce vehicles that are fun-to-drive, environmentally friendly and class-leading safety technology. Honda assures that it is not going to be just about the vehicles, but the advanced technology beyond it.”

Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh, President and Chief Executive Officer of Perodua, said “As Malaysia’s No 1 Energy-Efficient Vehicle (EEV) manufacturer, Perodua will be highlighting its technologies in this area at KLIMS’18, as well as displaying vehicle trends designed to excite the young as well as the young-at-heart. There will be something for everybody!”

Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh, added “Perodua will be showcasing a host of vehicles and technologies that extend beyond the vehicles themselves to suit modern lifestyles and global trends. People are at the heart of everything we do at Perodua. All our KLIMS’18 displays are directly geared towards the needs, wants and aspirations of the public.”

Datuk Aishah Ahmad (above) further commented “KLIMS’18 is a platform to gather key industry players to advance the automotive market in Malaysia. Sustainable mobility can be realised through a collaborative approach between auto-makers, fuel companies, associated industries, end users and regulators. We should pursue an automotive market in Malaysia that is beneficial for personal mobility and the economic prosperity that vehicles bring, while minimising the impact to the environment.”

According to the “Global Electric Vehicle Market Outlook 2018,” available on Reportbuyer, the electric vehicle market has a market potential of about 25 million units sold by 2025 and more than 400 models will be made available. In 2017, it has reached the 1.2 million sales mark with more than 165 models available for sale.

The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) is all rallying auto marques in Malaysia to invigorate the market for automobiles from four wheelers to two wheelers, automotive accessories products, car care products, lifestyle products associated with auto brands and commercial vehicles, at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS’18) this year.

KLIMS’18 will be held at the largest and newest exhibition arena in Malaysia, Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), from 23 November to 2 December 2018. As the pinnacle of the motoring show calendar of the state, KLIMS is back to ignite the public’s excitement for automobiles with new launches and groundbreaking concepts. Themed “Beyond Mobility”, KLIMS’18 is known as a branding show where auto marques gather to showcase their latest product offerings, automotive dominance and engineering visions.

Since the announcement of KLIMS’18 made early this year, MAA has been receiving enquiries from industry players, the public and media members for information of the show. Datuk Aishah Ahmad, President of MAA (below) said “We are pleased about the responses to KLIMS’18 as the show will not be successful for Malaysia without the support of industry players and the public. As the association representing members’ interests in the automotive industry, MAA is presenting KLIMS to engage our members in unity so that we can be consequential in promoting a stronger industry for the benefit of all members and to provide the public an exciting purview of the possibilities available for their personal or family vehicles.”

The automotive industry players are setting their plans to thrill KLIMS’18 visitors with exhibits that showcases exciting mobility. Ravindran Kurusamy, President of UMW Toyota Motor said “We are delighted that KLIMS is back again this year and being a regular participant at all the previous shows, UMW Toyota Motor will certainly be present. This year, our range is a vibrant and diverse one, demonstrating ever better mobility for all. With ever-better cars, we expect to be able to give visitors a glimpse of the future as well.”

Dennis Ho, Managing Director of Sime Darby Motors – Malaysia, Thailand & Taiwan, said “Sime Darby Motors is pleased to announce its participation at KLIMS’18 with Ford (above) and Hyundai showcasing their latest offerings at its booth. As the sole distributor of Ford vehicles in Malaysia, Sime Darby Auto Connexion’s exhibit will be more than just a showcase. Staying true to its tagline ‘Go Further’, visitors can look forward to special offerings and a rare treat themed around going further in technology and safety. Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors, on the other hand is all out to impress visitors with Hyundai’s latest SUVs that embody the brand’s Modern Premium concept. Hyundai believes in adding premium value to the car beyond just a transportation vehicle. Be sure to check out what Hyundai has to offer as these are no ordinary SUVs.”

Industry players are leveraging on KLIMS’18 as a springboard to drive better performances and capture bigger market. MAA has forecasted a growth of 2.3% for Malaysia’s automotive industry, to reach 590,000 units in Total Industry Volume (TIV) for 2018.  The projected growth comes as a positive sign with the marginal decline in TIV for the past two years.

While more auto brands are expected to confirm their participation, KLIMS’18 has confirmed market leaders such as Daihatsu, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Isuzu, Kia, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, Perodua, Proton, Toyota, UD, Kawasaki, Honda motorbikes, 3M, Elite Looks car care products, Good life car accessories, High-tech lubricants, Kakimotor car performance and maintenance, NVK Interiors and V-Kool.

Datuk Aishah Ahmad said “There is still time for industry players to participate at KLIMS’18, however, we are advising companies to confirm their bookings soon, so as not to be left out of available exhibition space.”

KLIMS’18 brings the largest gathering of automotive industry brands and automotive enthusiasts, as well as the public-at-large for a motoring and family-oriented event in Malaysia. KLIMS’18 is expected to make its comeback with over 100 participating exhibitors and attracting over 350,000 visitors.
