Lancia

The long-awaited revival of the overlooked Lancia brand has officially commenced with the debut of the automaker’s inaugural electric vehicle, the 2024 Lancia Ypsilon. The grand unveiling, set for February 14 in Milan, provides a sneak peek into the EV-exclusive Limited Edition Cassina trim, where Lancia plans to produce 1,906 uniquely numbered units, paying homage to the brand’s founding year.

While this marks the first comprehensive glimpse of the Ypsilon, its appearance is not entirely unfamiliar, having been previously leaked. Serving as the pioneer model for Lancia’s fresh design language, the Ypsilon features an illuminated calice grille and iconic round taillights reminiscent of the Lancia Stratos.

The exterior showcases polygonal headlights positioned lower on the front bumper and glossy black accents. Despite these new elements, the Ypsilon shares some similarities with its counterparts, the Peugeot 208 and the Opel Corsa, retaining familiar proportions and greenhouse design.

Inside, the emphasis on high-quality materials and distinctive design elements aims to evoke the ambience of an Italian living room. Collaborating with Cassina, a premium Italian furniture brand, Lancia introduces velvet-upholstered seats with a nostalgic “cannelloni” motif and a circular centre console resembling a coffee table.

The Ypsilon debuts Lancia’s SALA (Sound Air Light Augmentation) infotainment system with a dual-screen layout and an illuminated orb, likely serving as an AI-enhanced virtual assistant.

Technical specifications remain undisclosed, with the focus on exterior and interior design. The only confirmed figure is the WLTP range of 403km on a single charge, suggesting the use of a 54kWh battery pack shared with similar-sized Stellantis EVs.

Sharing its platform with several Stellantis models, the Ypsilon will later be joined by a hybrid version featuring a mild-hybrid turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine.

Post the February 14 debut, the Lancia Ypsilon Limited Edition Cassina will tour Italian showrooms and be available for immediate orders and will expand its reach across multiple European markets.

Lancia has teased its upcoming Ypsilon model, marking the brand’s return to new product releases after a hiatus since 2011. Set to debut next month, the new Ypsilon showcases a distinctive design with influences from the Pu-Ra HPE concept and iconic Lancia models such as the 037 and Stratos.

While the design exudes a sharp and city-friendly appearance, it also reflects similarities with other Stellantis products, including the Opel Corsa and Peugeot 208, owing to shared underpinnings among brands within the group. The new Ypsilon will be offered with hybrid and fully electric powertrains, aligning with the industry’s shift toward electrification.

For the electric variant, expectations point to a 52-kilowatt-hour battery pack and a single electric motor on the front axle, providing a peak output of 156hp.

Lancia and the Martini Racing Team are prominently embedded in the history of the World Rally Championship (WRC), especially during that glorious period of the Group B super rallycars. The Italian cars, with the blue, light blue and red stripes, are just as well remembered as the Audi Quattro and Peugeot 205 Turbo.

Of the many rallies the team entered, it was during 1983 when the refined strategy and brilliance of team boss Cesare Fiorio beat Audi to take the first WRC title with the 037. It inspired the Martini Racing Team to continue competing with determination over the next 10 years. The 037 was succeeded by first the S4, and then the Delta Integrali which won another 6 world titles.

Lancia, which is part of the FCA Group within Stellantis, seemed to have no future not so long ago. Its declining sales numbers and a stagnant range with just one model  put its continued existence at risk, and it was only Italians who seemed to have any affinity for the brand.

Stellantis sees Lancia as a brand with some hope and is willing to help it revive and embark on a new era. For a start, the 116-year old company has worked on a new brand vision which takes it into the electric age.

The brand vision has a design vision which was described last November and previewed in the Pu+Ra Zero, a 3-dimensional ‘manifesto’ that will guide the designers of the 3 new Lancia models to be launched between 2024 and 2028. Created from the words ‘Pure’ and ‘Radical’, Lancia Pu+Ra Design is described as a sustainable design language that is intended to ‘last for the next 100 years’.

Lancia is one of those old Italian car companies that had its glory days many decades ago and then faded into obscurity, though not vanishing totally. After being independent in its first 56 years, it became part of the Fiat group in 1969. As the Fiat group is now part of Stellantis, Lancia has become a division which has continued to sell its cars but only in the Italian market.

However, Stellantis sees Lancia as a brand that can be revived and brought to greater heights. It is therefore embarking on a new era with a new design vision. This design vision – Lancia Pu+Ra Design – is previewed in the Pu+Ra Zero, a 3-dimensional ‘manifesto’ that will guide the designers of the 3 new Lancia models to be launched between 2024 and 2028.

The World Rallycross (RX) Championship has gone electric and since the first round of the 2022 championship in August, teams have been running cars which have been modified with electric powertrains. As in the WRC, the top tiers will run the new RX1e rallycross cars with twin motors, pushing out 500 kW (equivalent to 680 bhp) and 880 Nm of instant torque.

GCK Motorsport, which is entering its first event next weekend, is only starting as it did not make it in time for the first 9 races. However, its entry in the coming World RX of Germany is much anticipated by enthusiasts because Guerlain Chicherit’s GCK Motorsport will be running a car which was first launched in 1987 – the Lancia Delta.
