F1 (Round 5): Results And Highlights Of Emirates Formula 1 70th Anniversary Grand Prix 2020

♦ A spin in Turn 1 for Sebastian Vettel saw the 4-time World Champion drop from 11th to last in the pack as the cars headed away.

♦ After 10 laps, tyre issues began to start as temperatures rose and the cars came in for tyre changes.  Carlos Sainz and Sebastian Vettel stayed out up to 23 laps but Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen chose to hang for 27 laps before pitting and giving up his leading position momentarily.

♦ Tyre management became increasingly critical for the two Mercedes-AMG cars as the hard compounds blistered.

♦ With 15 laps to go, Hamilton captured the lead but was very concerned about his tyre condition and the blistering.

♦ Understanding that the Mercedes-AMG driver could only do so much with his well worn tyres, Verstappen was told to put the pressure on and close the gap which was about 11 seconds.

♦ With 10 laps to go, Hamilton came in to get fresh tyres and Verstappen took over the lead, with Bottas 4 seconds behind. Charging confidently ahead and setting a new lap record, he got past Charles Leclerc and closed in on Bottas.

♦ In the closing laps, Hamilton got past his team mate but ran out of time to close in on Verstappen who was 9 seconds ahead.

♦ The win today at Silverstone makes it 9 for the Red Bull Racing DutchmanThe 25 points don’t advance his position in the standings but narrow the gap with Bottas.

Aston Martin has unleashed the power of three of its Valkyrie models, with Max Verstappen and Alex Albon – the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing drivers – getting their first taste of the revolutionary hypercar.

While each Formula 1 driver drove the first verification prototype (VP) that made its public debut at last year’s British Grand Prix (Aston Martin Valkyrie VP1), both VP2 and VP3 were taken round by the company’s high-performance test driver Chris Goodwin and Aston Martin Racing WEC drivers Darren Turner and Alex Lynn.

Each verification prototype, of which there will be 8 built in total, is subjected to a variety of intense testing programmes designed to develop and validate specific attributes that contribute to achieving the performance of the world’s fastest ever road-going hypercar. These programmes are focussed on supporting first customer deliveries starting in the second half of this year.

“This event has been an incredibly important step in Aston Martin Valkyrie’s story. To have three cars now running will see the rate of physical development for this exceptional hypercar increase exponentially. Both Max and Alex were really positive of the direction that we’re currently taking and could see that the ingredients for an exceptionally high-performing car are already there ready to be untapped. To have that second opinion and validation doesn’t mean the hard work is done already, but this is a great step on our journey,” said Goodwin.

8-time Grand Prix winner Verstappen came away elated by his first laps in the Valkyrie. He said: “I was here at Silverstone to watch the first runs of the Aston Martin Valkyrie at the British Grand Prix last year but of course it’s always better to be behind the wheel yourself! To be one of the first guys to drive an insane car like this was really exciting… it was amazing to get a first taste of it.”

“Of course, it’s still in the development phase but you can already feel the pace, which compared to a normal car is… pretty different! The Aston Martin Valkyrie and its levels of downforce are incredible, and it looks super aggressive. It was a lot of fun out there,” he added.

Albon was equally pleased with his drive. “It was incredibly exciting to have this opportunity to drive the Aston Martin Valkyrie and the first thing that struck me was the visual aspect – it looks awesome! It also really feels like a racing car,” said the Thai driver.

“Obviously there’s still some development to do, but already it feels very good, especially the balance between the corners. It’s light; it feels sharp. Sure, compared to an F1 car, you’re missing the outright downforce, but you still feel the g-forces in the corners and it definitely reacts closer to an F1 car than a normal roadcar. It’s pretty special. I just need to get my hands on one!” he said.

Over 4,900 sim racers have tried to get one of 40 places in 2020 Porsche Esports Supercup

Since mid-December, thousands of competitors all over the world have been racing against each other in qualifying rounds for the 2020 Porsche Esports Supercup in the so-called ‘Porsche iRacing Cup’. Their duels have taken place on different virtual racetracks that are replicas of real ones.

To date, over 4,900 sim racers have already taken part in the qualifying rounds – twice as many participants compared to the year before. The qualification concludes on March 2, with the top 20 qualifiers gaining entry to contest the Porsche Esports Supercup.

At present, the Red Bull’s Formula 1 driver and avid sim racer Max Verstappen is competing, currently ranking 20th (as at February 10, 2020). The illustrious grid line-up will be enhanced by the 20 top sim racers from last season who automatically qualify for the 2020 races.

iRating system used
During the qualification, a rating system created by iRacing ensures that the level of performance is evenly-matched. The individual numeric value of the iRating system gives an idea of the general skill and success of each driver. The key to achieving the highest possible numeric value is, for example, flawless driving and the corresponding result. Moreover, the points gained at the end of the qualifying rounds determine the performance level in relation to the entire starting grid.

Last year, a total of 2,372 e-drivers attempted to qualify for the Porsche Esports Supercup. For the 2020 season, the defending champion Joshua Rogers (Australia) and his hottest rivals Max Benecke (Germany), Sebastian Job (Great Britain) and Mitchell deJong (USA) return as the favourites. In 2019, they clinched the first four places in the championship.

10 online races from March to September
40 of the world’s best sim racers will compete against each other in 10 online races in a virtual Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Most of these races take place parallel to the real championship rounds of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, which are held as support to the European Formula 1 events.

The first championship sim race takes off on May 2 on the virtual version of the Circuit Zandvoort in the Netherlands (perhaps Dutchman Verstappen will have an advantage?). Simultaneously, the actual Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will contest its first round at the same venue. On September 19, Italy’s Circuit Monza plays host to the final round of the 2020 Esports Supercup.

F1 (Round 20) – 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix Results and Highlights

♦ Max Verstappen took a well-deserved third win of the 2019 season, starting from pole position all the way to the chequered flag.

♦ In the closing stages of the race, the two Ferrari drivers made contact and knocked themselves out of the race.

♦ Lewis Hamilton finished third but was deemed by the stewards to be at fault for an incident with Alexander Albon Ansusinhan, Red Bull Racing’s Thai-British driver, As a result, Hamilton received a 5-second penalty which dropped him to 7th in the official classification.

♦ Hamilton’s demotion gave Carlos Sainz the third position – his first ever F1 podium. He had started from 20th and fought hard to move up the field. The podium finish was also McLaren’s first one since 2014 in Australia.

♦ Pierre Gasly also had a great day with his first podium, having gotten ahead after the Hemilton-Albon incident. Although the Mercedes-AMG driver tried to out-accelerate him to the finish line, Gasly pulled ahead to cross first and claim second position.

F1 (Round 12) – 2019 Hungarian Grand Prix Starting Grid

Race starts at 3:10 pm in Hungary/9:10 pm in Malaysia

♦ Max Verstappen will start from pole position with Valtteri Bottas alongside. It’s the first F1 pole position for the 21-year old Aston Martin Red Bull Racing driver.

♦ The 4.38-km circuit is often referred to as ‘Monaco without walls’ because of the tight and twisting layout. This is not good for the Ferraris as their downforce is not as strong as the leading rivals.

♦ Improved aerodynamics on the Williams cars have helped George Russell perform better. This is especially important on the Hungaroring circuit’s flowing sequences of slow and medium-speed corners and frequent changes of direction. The teams are using the highest levels of downforce seen all year at a purpose-built track to Hungary.

♦ The Ferrari team is concerned about tyres. The circuit layout also places relatively high lateral loads on tyres and that, allied to often high track temperatures, means that rubber is put under some stress. Sebastian Vettel expects it to be a very difficult race today in terms of tyre management and given the characteristics of the car.

♦ This will be the last round before the teams take a summer break. The next race will be in Belgium on September 1.

♦ As the team managers enjoy their holiday break, they will also be thinking about the driver line-up for 2020. Although there are rumours of Verstappen moving to Mercedes-AMG, this is unlikely to happen and the team’s boss will be looking at retaining Bottas or letting current reserve driver Esteban Ocon partner Lewis Hamilton.

F1 (Round 11) – Highlights of the 2019 German Grand Prix and Results

♦ Rain created a drama-filled race which delighted spectators who had not seen so much action in a while.

♦ Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen collected his second win of the 2019 season. The Dutch driver has won 7 F1 races to date.

♦ Lewis Hamilton, who was ill, finished 11th but got promoted two positions up as a result of 30-second penalties imposed on both Alfa Romeo drivers for start-line offences.

♦ Robert Kubica’s promotion to tenth place gave the Williams team, powered by Mercedes engines, its first point of the season.

♦ Russian driver, Daniil Kvyat, had two reasons to celebrate after the race. First was his unexpected third place after a chaotic race and second was the birth of his first child the same day.

♦ The event might not have been run this year had Mercedes-Benz not come in to provide support as the main title sponsor and provided much-needed financial support.

F1 – Highlights of the 2019 British Grand Prix

  • Lewis Hamilton’s victory at Silverstone this year is his sixth British GP win, the most of any driver in the race.
  • Sebastian Vettel rammed into Max Verstappen’s car on lap 37 but the Ferrari driver acknowledged it was his fault and apologized to Verstappen at the end of the race. He was given a 10-second penalty which dropped his finishing position to 15th, and 2 penalty points on his racing licence.
  • Despite the dramatic incident, Vettel and Verstappen completed the race with the Red Bull driver collecting 10 points for his 5th placing.
  • Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen – both driving for the American Rich Energy Haas F1 Team – never had a chance to race this weekend as they collided in the first corner and had to retire as the damage was too severe.
  • The duel between Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen received praise as the two drivers showed gentlemanly behavior even as they challenged each other.
  • Kimi Raikkonen’s 8th placing at the British GP brings him points for a third consecutive race but not without having to work hard. The car still lacks speed on the straights, he said.
  • Lewis Hamilton revealed that he ‘went easy’ on Valtteri Bottas because they are team mates, even though they compete hard against each other and Bottas certainly would like to win the championship. “When you’re racing with a team-mate it’s on a different level. If I were racing a Ferrari, you take more risks. Still respectful, but you can lean on them a bit more but as team-mates, we sit down at the beginning of the race, we talk about Turn One and how we’re going to respect each other,” Hamilton said at the post-race press conference.

  • The most thrilling race of the 2019 championship with the top two winners being other than the Mercedes-AMG duo.
  • Although there was contact between Verstappen and Leclerc, the stewards decided not to penalise Verstappen. Ferrari says it won’t appeal.
  • The Aston Martin Red Bull win gives Honda a win for the first time since returning to F1.
  • Overheating problems were blamed for the poor performance of the Mercedes-AMG cars.
  • Red Bull’s Pierre Gasly gets the best result of his first season with 7th placing.
  • Lewis Hamilton started from 4th place although he qualified for 2nd due to a penalty for blocking Kimi Raikkonen.
  • Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi also scored the first point of his F1 career when he finished 10th.
  • Valtteri Bottas’ third placing adds some more points to the Mercedes-AMG lead in the Constructors Championship to keep the gap at 135 points from Ferrari.
