Government support for Malaysian carmakers has not been confined to providing various forms of funding and incentives as the government, being the country’s largest fleet owner, has also purchased thousands of vehicles from Perodua and Proton over the years.

First government agency to use Aruz
The most recent example was the purchase of 55 units of the Perodua Aruz by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP). This is the first fleet deal for the 7-seater SUV and KPDNHEP is also the first government agency to purchase the Aruz.

“We thank KPDNHEP very much for choosing the Perodua Aruz and in doing so, supporting the Malaysian automotive supply eco-system, as over 90% of the Aruz’s components are locally sourced. The same is true of all our current models,” Perodua President & CEO, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

Explaining how the Aruz would be beneficial to the operations of the ministry’s enforcement officers, Dato’ Zainal said: “We understand KPDNHEP’s enforcement officers often take long road journeys in the course of duty. The Perodua Aruz is durable, dependable, spacious, practical, easy to drive and due to its many seating configurations, very versatile. Not forgetting conveniences such as the built-in toll card reader, integrated dash cam, HDMI, Smart Link, Bluetooth and navigation.”

Safe and fuel-efficient
The occupants will also be well protected with the Advanced Safety Assist (ASA) 2.0, 6 airbags and Vehicle Stability Control, which have contributed to the Aruz being rated the maximum of 5 stars by ASEAN NCAP.

“It is also an Energy-Efficient Vehicle (EEV) with a best-in-class rated fuel efficiency of 15.6 kms/litre, contributing to low running costs,” he said, adding that over 23,000 units have already been delivered out of over 33,000 bookings received to date since its launch in January.

Shell can be found in virtually every country around the globe and in Malaysia, the brand has had a presence of more than 127 years. It is a trusted brand and a household name for petroleum products, lubricants and other services serving Malaysian consumers and the auto industry. This trust has been gained through ensuring strong product quality and value chain integrity.

However, popular brands will tend to attract ‘copycats’ who try to exploit such success and trust by selling fake products to unsuspecting consumers. These are sold through the black market and for companies like Shell, there has been an impact on the brand.

In 2018, Shell conducted laboratory tests on a random sample of products sold online and in hypermarkets that claimed to be genuine Shell products. The lab test results showed that 4 out of 12 containers sold were counterfeit.

Helping enforcement agencies to identify fakes
As part of its continuous effort to protect Shell’s brand integrity and to ensure that customers receive only genuine Shell products, Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd is driven to strengthen its collaboration with enforcement agencies to combat the presence of lubricants that are being passed off as genuine Shell products to unsuspecting consumers and workshops.

The company recently conducted a special training workshop which was attended by nearly 100 enforcement officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNDHEP) and Royal Malaysian Customs. The aim was to provide the agencies with knowledge on how to differentiate genuine Shell lubricants from counterfeit and illegal products, when conducting raids.

Shell Lubricants Marketing General Manager, May Tan, thanked the enforcement agencies for giving serious attention to this issue that has created confusion in the marketplace, threatened Shell’s reputation, and affected the livelihood of honest workshop owners.

“We would like to commend the authorities for their efforts in combating counterfeit lubricant production and distribution activities that affect major brands including Shell. As the brand owner, we are deeply concerned with the number of consumers who might have inadvertently purchased fake lubricants through unauthorised channels. That is why we always advise consumers to only buy official genuine Shell lubricants with ‘Untuk Pasaran Malaysia’ labels complete with QR codes that can be authenticated via SHARE website (www.shell.com.my/share) and from authorised outlets to avoid potential irreversible damage to their vehicles,” she said.

No matter how much the carmakers and authorities warn consumers about the dangers of using imitation products and parts, there are still motorists who buy them knowingly or unknowingly. And these days, the imitation parts can be hard to differentiate from the original items so consumers may be misled even though they should be suspicious if the prices are too cheap.

In a move to address this situation in the market, Perodua recently took the initiative of providing enforcement officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) with an understanding of the problem and how to identify imitation parts.

Comprehensive briefing for enforcement officers
Some 120 KPDNHEP officers attended an engagement session at Perodua’s Sungai Choh headquarters where, together with select service dealers and stockists, they received a comprehensive briefing. They were acquainted them with Perodua’s range of genuine products and parts, where they are sold, the logistics flow and shown real and fake items.

“Perodua is aware of the circulation of non-genuine products and parts that bear Perodua branding in the market, some of which are almost indistinguishable from the originals. These include lubricants, oil filters, shock absorbers and brake pads,” said Perodua Sales Sdn Bhd Managing Director, Dato’ Dr Zahari Husin.

Be sure to buy Perodua Genuine parts from authorised service centres or stockists.

Warranty is void if imitation parts used

ProGanti parts are an affordable alternative and you won’t lose your warranty using them.

“This is very alarming as they are critical items. Customers may be misled into buying and using such items, which have not been tested by Perodua, on their vehicles. Besides voiding warranties, this could greatly jeopardise the safety and running condition of their vehicles,” he warned.

“We hope that the engagement session was informative and insightful, and that it will help them in their duties to identify, pin-point and put the brakes on counterfeit Perodua products and parts in the market,” added Dato’ Dr Zahari. “We urge the public not to be lured by unscrupulous traders selling imitation Perodua items, and to only buy and use genuine products and parts from authorised Perodua stockists or any of our 179 authorised Perodua service centres nationwide.

“Genuine Perodua products and parts are fairly priced and most importantly, they give you total peace-of-mind. As an alternative, we have the ProGanti range of parts that’s easier on the wallet but still tested and approved by Perodua,” he said.
