The next generation of the Mitsubishi Outlander is under final tuning and testing with its global debut to take place on February 17, 2021. Engineers at Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) are putting the SUV through its paces in severe weather and road conditions.
This will be the fourth generation of the Outlander, which MMC traces back to the Airtrek of 2001. While the Airtrek was sold in Malaysia earlier when USF was handling Mitsubishi SUVs, the Outlander was not and it was only with the third generation that the model was offered in the market by Mitsubishi Motors malaysia. Initially, it was imported in CBU (completely built-up) form and a year after launch, in 2017, local assembly began at the Tan Chong assembly plant in Kuala Lumpur.
Super-All Wheel Control system
With the fourth generation, MMC will introduce its latest Super-All Wheel Control system. The system advances the company’s pioneering all-wheel drive technology which has been developed with experience in years of competition in the tough Dakar rallies.
Preliminary information indicates that the new Outlander will be bigger and has been developed with the product concept of ‘I-Fu-Do-Do’, which means ‘authentic and majestic’.
The Outlander has been available with different powertrains, including a hybrid one which has been popular in Europe. With electrification being the trend in the industry, the new model should also continue with this powertrain in its line-up.
New Drive Mode
“We took everything we know about on and off-road driving from the rally experiences to apply the latest Super-All Wheel Control technology in our newly developed platform. We also specifically developed a new drive mode selector to provide confident driving at all times and in all weather conditions,” said Kentaro Honda, segment chief vehicle engineer (lead engineer) for the new SUV that will be a flagship model.
The current third generation has been assembled in Malaysia since 2017.

For those who choose the Outlander 2.0, priced at RM133,491, there’s a cash rebate up to RM4,000 and 2 years of free scheduled maintenance. Those who opt for the Outlander 2.4, priced at RM147,762, will get a cash rebate up to RM2,000 as well as 2 years of free scheduled maintenance. All Outlanders come with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty.
Mitsubishi Outlander, available with 2.0-litre or 2.4-litre engines
The pricing of the ASX and Outlander is exempt from sales tax till the end of 2020. As both models are assembled locally, they can have full exemption of the 10% sales tax. For the ASX, this saves buyers up to RM8,000 while for the Outlander, the savings are up to RM4, 000.
Low interest rates for Triton
As for the popular Triton pick-up which is imported from Thailand, customers can enjoy a low hire-purchase interest rate of 0.88% per annum or cash rebates of up to RM4,000 (Triton VGT Adventure X, Triton VGT AT Premium and Triton VGT MT Premium). The special interest rate is only for H-P finance packages from Maybank or Public Bank.
Mitsubishi Triton
Those who buy the Triton VGT with manual transmission during the promotion period can enjoy a cash rebate of RM6,000, while the Triton Quest 4×2 has a cash rebate of RM4,000. From EVO’s to Outlanders, Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) recently acquired 15 units of Mitsubishi Outlander 2.4 contributed by PLUS Highway for the traffic laws enforcement on the highway. The handover ceremony of the new “Peronda Lebuhraya” cars was held at Persada PLUS, Subang Jaya. Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM), the official distributor of Mitsubishi vehicles in Malaysia was there to witness the handover ceremony.
These vehicles were contributed to PDRM to be used as Expressway Mobile Patrol Vehicle (EMPV). The SUVs will be known as ‘Police Highway Eagle’ which will enhance the effectiveness in enforcing traffic laws during festive seasons, said Inspector-General of PoliceTan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun. Each of the 15 Outlanders has been upgraded with Mitsubishi EVO X engines featuring a special twin-turbo AWD system with anti-lag, which pushes output to 470bhp. That last line is a complete lie, I just wanted to see if you’re paying attention. They’re all stock-standard.
Being there to witness the handover ceremony, Chief Executive Officer of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia, Tomoyuki Shinnishi (above, left) said “Safety is the Mitsubishi Outlander’s strongest suit, befitting its role as a family vehicle. But now, we are delighted to know that besides being one of the best safety specced vehicles on the road, the Outlander is meeting every requirement of PDRM to assist them with the enforcement of traffic laws on the highway.”
He elaborated, “With many years of winning experience in the grueling Dakar Rally under its belt, Mitsubishi is also a specialist in rugged 4WD vehicles. So with the Outlander’s safety function, power and stability, we are confident that the Outlander will do its part in assisting our policeman to eradicate traffic offences and eventually lower the risk of road accidents.”
In a separate ceremony, PDRM also acquired eight Mitsubishi cars consisting of Mitsubishi Outlander 2.4-litre (above) and Mitsubishi ASX Compact SUV contributed by ANIH Berhad. The contribution made by these two highway concessions were valued at an estimation of RM3 million.
