Perodua Reports 28.3% Sales Increase in Q3 2023

Perodua has reported a remarkable 28.3% increase in sales for the third quarter of 2023, compared to the same period in 2022. In this quarter, Perodua sold 88,537 units, a substantial growth from the 69,011 units sold during the third quarter of 2022.

This surge in sales can be attributed to Perodua’s efforts to enhance production operational efficiency. In the third quarter of 2023, Perodua manufactured a total of 91,528 units, marking an impressive increase of 21.7% when compared to the 75,196 units produced during the same period in 2022.

The third quarter of 2023 marked the beginning of an initiative to boost the company’s monthly production to over 30,000 units per month. This became possible as supplies of raw materials and parts could finally meet the rising demand.

For the year-to-date figures, Perodua has produced 245,341 units as of September 2023. This represents a substantial 18.6% increase from the 206,837 units produced during the same period in the previous year. This growth showcases the potential of the Malaysian automotive ecosystem, as it continues to enhance economies of scale without compromising quality and cost efficiency.

In terms of year-to-date registrations, Perodua reported 233,227 units for the first nine months of 2023, compared to 196,354 units for the same period in the previous year. Among these registered units, the most popular Perodua model during this period was the Perodua Bezza, followed by the Perodua Axia and the Perodua Myvi.

Perodua is on track to achieve its registration target of 314,000 units for this year. In September 2023, the company registered 28,995 units, marking a 17.7% increase compared to the same month in 2022. In terms of production, Perodua manufactured 31,447 cars in September 2023, reflecting a 8.2% increase from the 29,077 units produced in September 2022.

Netizens Furious On Tax Free Exemption For EVs And Not ICE Cars

Netizens are expressing their frustration over the fact that luxury electric car brands like Tesla are exempt from taxes and duties, supposedly ‘making wealthy Malaysians even wealthier’, while fuel-powered, more affordable cars like the Perodua Axia are subject to high-er taxes, inadvertently burdening the less fortunate segments of the Malaysian population.

Questions about the environment are allegedly fairly important with electric cars (EVs). When their batteries reach the end of their useful lives, they will compound the already existing environmental concerns.

Perodua Sales Better Than 2022, And It’s About To Get Better

Perodua has been on a sales rampage of sorts. In comparison to the 131,641 cars produced in the same period of 2022, Perodua produced 153,813 cars in the first half of 2023, which is a 17% increase.

In the first half of 2023 (1H23), registrations increased by 13.6% to 144,690 vehicles from 127,343 units sold during the same time in the previous year as a result of this manufacturing achievement.

With a total of 40,555 units sold between January and June, the Perodua Bezza has been the brand’s best-selling model thus far this year. The Perodua Myvi and Perodua Axia have each sold 32,319 and 28,199 units, respectively.

Perodua also stated that it will continue to increase its operational efficiencies, and as a result, is on track to fulfil its 330,000 production and 314,000 registration targets.

When comparing quarter to quarter, Perodua produced 69,013 automobiles in 2Q23, up 1% from 68,316 at the same time last year.

According to Perodua, one of the significant advancements it has made is a reduction in the tact time (the amount of time it takes to build a vehicle) at the Perodua Global Manufacturing plant (PGMSB) from 1.35 minutes to 1.25 minutes.

The recently launched Axia E was well received and the ready stock of 2,500 vehicles were completely distributed within 48 hours.

In addition to that, Bank Negara Malaysia kept its overnight policy rate steady at 3% which helped ease the financial cost of Perodua’s lower income earning customers.

New Perodua Axia Launched With More Features And New Technologies

With the launch of the new second generation of the Perodua Axia today, the Malaysian carmaker raises the benchmark for entry-level cars. In most countries, cars in the lowest price bracket are usually quite basic, with minimum safety features. That’s not the case for the new Axia which, in the top variants, has advanced features and technologies.

There are four variants as before, with prices ranging from RM38,600 to RM49,500, to suit different budgets. Though the prices have increased a bit, Perodua’s President & CEO , Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, said that the increases are not as much as the extra value of RM5,800 in better or extra features. Customers are thus getting better value for their money with the new model.

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗮 𝗔𝘅𝗶𝗮 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝟰 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗜𝗻 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗡 𝗡𝗖𝗔𝗣

ASEAN NCAP, the organization which assesses new models in the market (especially those made and sold in ASEAN), has released its report after testing the new Perodua Axia. The hatchback is the second generation of the Axia and will be officially launched on February 14. ASEAN NCAP was provided a unit for their assessment which included a crash test and after analyzing the results, the Axia received 4 stars (out of the maximum of 5 stars).

The first generation of the Axia tested by ASEAN NCAP in 2014 also received 4 stars then. According to Perodua engineers, the new Axia, with its new structure and increased safety features, should be able to score 5 stars if the same protocols are used as for model tested in 2014.

However, in 2023, the bar has been raised with new protocols that are more demanding. ASEAN NCAP periodically upgrades its assessment protocols, which the industry is informed of, and this serves to advance the safety standards that the industry should provide.

First Driving Impressions And More Details Of New Perodua Axia

As with previous new model introductions, Perodua offered the media a chance to get first impressions of driving the new Axia as well as provided more details of the specifications. The company has asked us not to write about the specs and features as it wants to them made public only when the car is officially launched on February 14.

However, we have been encouraged to share our brief experience with the new car (albeit a brief one) and also pictures of its exterior (which was camouflaged) as well as interior. Four variants will be available – G, X, SE and AV – and all will have the same powertrain.

Perodua registers record number of vehicles in one day – over 5,000 units

In spite of the severe downturn that the car industry suffered earlier in the year due to suspension of business activities nationwide, it seems that sales are presently pretty good. In fact, up till November, Perodua has already delivered over195,000 vehicles and expects to meet its 210,000-unit registration target by the last day of 2020.

The strong momentum continued to be evident in November as the Malaysian carmaker reported sales of 23,119 units. On Monday, the last day of the month, its outlets registered a combined total of 5,027 units – the most ever in a single day.

“Our November sales represents a slight normalising from the previous two record months we had – 25,035 units in September and 26,852 units in October,” explained Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad, Perodua’s President & CEO.

“Yet the accomplishment is impressive, given the challenging economic climate and ‘new normal’ operating procedures brought about by COVID-19. And our 5,027-unit one-day record shows what resilience, persistence and adaptability can bring,” he added.

Top three models – Axia, Myvi and Bezza
Axia deliveries, totalling 6,318 units were the highest among the five Perodua models, followed by the Myvi with 6,295 units and the Bezza with 6,224 units. Deliveries of the Aruz and Alza totalled 2,617 units and 1,665 units, respectively.

*In November, the model with the highest number of deliveries was the Axia.*

“Perodua’s two main priorities at present are to ensure as many of our valued customers as possible can get their cars before year-end to enjoy the sales tax-exempt prices; and to further bolster the Malaysian automotive ecosystem with our economies of scale in these hard times,” Dato’ Zainal said.

Supporting the ecosystem
“Over 90% of our components are locally-sourced, and coupled with our sales volume, this generates significant business for Malaysian component suppliers and helps them sustain jobs,” he added. “The completed cars are then distributed through Malaysia’s largest car sales network, the majority of which constitute independent dealers that benefit greatly from the business, and even more if they do servicing and repairs as well.”

Dato’ Zainal said Perodua is proud of its national duty and will continue to serve all Malaysians’ mobility needs with quality vehicles that are safe, practical, efficient and offer the best value, while pushing the boundaries of technology for the masses in the future.

Malaysia’s three bestselling models help Perodua achieve 42% market share

Perodua delivered a total of 23,203 vehicles last month, which was the best sales month in 2020 for the Malaysian carmaker, beating the June volume by 9.2%. This brings the cumulative volume for the first 7 months to 97,373 units. For the same period in 2019, it was over 141,000 units, which shows the impact that the Movement Control Order (MCO) had on new vehicle sales this year.

Three bestsellers of 2020
The carmaker estimates its July and year-to-date market shares to stand at 40% and 42%, respectively. The models contributing to this were the Myvi, Axia and Bezza which, according to Perodua, are Malaysia’s top three best-selling vehicles in the first seven months of 2020.

Cumulative sales of the Myvi were 29,313 units, while the Axia reached 28,107 units, and the Bezza ended July at 25,416 units.

“The Perodua Myvi, Malaysia’s best-selling vehicle every year since 2006, has recently been upgraded with the latest Advanced Safety Assist (ASA) 2.0 suite of driver assistance safety systems. It remains one of the most affordable cars with advanced safety features in the country,” said Perodua’s President & CEO, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

Higher sales will help automotive eco-system
“Since our operations restarted after the 2-month Movement Control Order (MCO) closure, sales volumes have rebounded swiftly, aided by the government’s sales tax exemption which will run until the end of the year. Should this encouraging trend continue, the healthy volume will enable us to further bolster Malaysia’s automotive eco-system of suppliers and dealers in this time of need,” he said.

According to Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) estimates, a Total Industry Volume of at least 500,000 units is needed this year to ensure the continued survival of the automotive eco-system. The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has offered a forecast of 470,000 units of new vehicle sales after obtaining input from its members.
