Kia has unveiled a striking Australia-inspired camouflage wrap for its upcoming pickup truck, the Kia Tasman. Named after the rugged and adventurous spirit of Tasmania, the southernmost island of Australia, the Tasman pickup embodies Kia’s dedication to design innovation and exploration.

Created in collaboration with renowned artist Richard Boyd-Dunlop from Australia and New Zealand, the unique wrap, themed around ‘The Path Never Taken,’ reflects the Tasman’s adventurous nature. Inspired by the diverse landscapes of Australia, the graphics depict a journey along the coast and through the outback, drawing on Boyd-Dunlop’s own experiences hitching rides in pickup trucks across the country.

The concept of ‘The Path Never Taken’ encapsulates the adventurous spirit of the Kia Tasman, encouraging customers to explore new landscapes and experiences with a vehicle that prioritises reliability and performance. Through this theme, the Tasman aims to lead drivers toward unknown and breathtaking destinations.

Known for his distinctive artistic style, Boyd-Dunlop’s design for the Kia Tasman camouflage wrap blends elements of land and sea, combining the fiery hues of the outback with commanding blues inspired by Australia’s surf culture.

Scheduled for debut in 2025, the Tasman represents Kia’s first foray into the C-segment pickup truck market. Its launch will be phased globally, with key markets including Korea, Australia, Africa, and the Middle East. In addition to its utility as a work-oriented pickup, the Tasman is designed to meet diverse personal needs, catering to demanding lifestyles and supporting extreme leisure activities.

Nissan recently unveiled a bold strategy aiming to introduce 30 new vehicles globally within the next three years, with seven of these vehicles destined for the U.S. market. This ambitious plan also emphasises strengthened collaboration with partners, particularly within the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance.

Collaboration with Mitsubishi is set to yield several new vehicles for North America, including a jointly developed 1-ton pickup truck manufactured in Mexico. While it remains unclear if this pickup is part of the seven vehicles slated for launch in the U.S., producing it in Mexico would circumvent steep tariffs, potentially facilitating its sale in the American market.

Initially, the new pickup is expected to feature petrol engines, but there are considerations for future versions to incorporate plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains. Nissan and Mitsubishi have separately hinted at their work on electric trucks, with Nissan unveiling the Surf-Out electric truck concept in 2021.

Toyota is set to captivate truck enthusiasts with the upcoming release of the enhanced Toyota Hilux, boasting a mild-hybrid version designed to elevate both power and efficiency in this popular pickup.

At the heart of the innovation is a 48-volt mild-hybrid system seamlessly integrated into the powertrain, delivering an additional punch of 16hp and 65Nm of torque. This hybrid system complements Toyota’s robust turbocharged 2.8-litre diesel four-cylinder engine, which independently generates 201hp and an impressive 500Nm of torque. Notably, the 48V lithium battery powers the motor, contributing to a five per cent improvement in efficiency compared to the standard diesel powertrain.

Despite the absence of an electric-only mode, Toyota’s optimised stop-start system, coupled with the electric motor, extends fuel savings by allowing the engine to remain off for longer durations in heavy stop-and-go traffic. The diesel engine’s idle is also reduced to 600 rpm, further enhancing fuel efficiency. While specific fuel economy figures are yet to be disclosed, the automaker emphasises a noteworthy five per cent increase in overall efficiency.

Beyond its advanced powertrain, the Hilux Hybrid 48V introduces Toyota’s Multi-terrain Select system, featuring six driving modes—Dirt, Mud, Rock, Sand, Deep Snow, or Automatic mode, allowing the truck to intuitively adapt to diverse driving conditions. Recognising the Hilux’s off-road legacy, engineers have fortified the hybrid pickup by waterproofing critical electrical components, ensuring it can confidently navigate through challenging terrains, including wading through water up to 27.5 inches deep.

Fisker has unveiled further information and visuals concerning the Alaska electric pickup truck. The company asserts that this electric truck is set to achieve the distinction of being the most lightweight and environmentally sustainable truck globally.

Derived from the adapted Ocean platform known as FM31, the Alaska electric truck is anticipated to commence production in the United States during the initial quarter of 2025. It is projected to offer a maximum range of 574km.

There’s no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our lives in different ways. The situation has now become endemic, meaning we have to live with COVID-19 being around, but life can progress to some degree of normalcy.

For many, the pandemic and what was experienced with lock-downs and the fear of being infected would have brought on a re-evaluation of priorities. The quality of life would become even more important and with it, the need to have a true balance of work, family and play.

For driving enthusiasts, that balance would include doing more and going further with whatever vehicle is owned. It can be at work, going off the beaten track on an adventure, or on a leisurely weekend outing with family and other like-minded individuals, or even doing community service.

The next-generation Ford Ranger can be an ideal vehicle for all these activities. It is the smartest, most versatile and capable Ranger yet, an inspiration for a new generation of owners to make their own routes in life and Live the Ranger Life to the fullest.

Here’s a quick overview of the most important things about the next-generation Ford Ranger:

1. A trusted partner for the Ranger way of life

The Ranger was a pioneer in the pick-up segment in Malaysia, transforming what was a basic workhorse machine into an all-round lifestyle vehicle. And as its numbers grew, the community of Ranger owners also grew with shared values and the enthusiasm for life and all that it offers.

The Ranger’s versatility makes it a trusted partner not just for work but also for family and play. It is a single vehicle that can do more – and do it well. When it’s not used for work, it can provide shared experiences through the exclusive Ford Ranger Getaways community and experiential platform.

2. Large infotainment screen with 360o camera view

From the first generation, the Ranger has led with the technology it offers and the next-generation Ranger continues this. Apart from its high-level of well-integrated technology is a multitude of features that include a connective experience with the large first-in-class 12-inch/10,1-inch infotainment touchscreen. The large space on the screen means bigger displays of maps and information, while there’s enough room left at the bottom of the screen for other menus such as climate and entertainment controls. The infotainment system is powered by Ford’s cutting-edge SYNC 4A communication and entertainment system.

Additionally, with the 360o camera on the WildTrak, parking the next-generation Ranger is ‘no sweat’. Whether it’s tight urban spaces, navigating tricky terrain or manoeuvring through narrow streets, the driver can easily see the situation on every side.

3. Digital instrument cluster

The next-generation Ranger has done away with the analogue instrument panel and all information is now presented on a digital display. This not only enhances clarity but also allows for personalisation of information preferred by the driver. Graphics featuring realistic bodystyle avatars are available to suit different moods on each journey.

4. Next-gen safety

Safety is paramount to Ford, whatever type of vehicle it is. The Ranger nameplate has always been a leader in the segment with an array of safety features and advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS) that has expanded and become more advanced.

With the next-generation Ranger, there are more of the latest crash protection features and ADAS (Advanced Driver Assist System). The ADAS features include Evasive Steer Assist, Lane Change Warning and Aid, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go and High Beam Assist. This will make the driver feel more secure and confident in every driving situation and enjoy the drive.

5. New interior – like being in a premium SUV

The Ranger changed people’s perception of a truck because it had the same comfort and convenience as a passenger car. With the next-generation Ranger’s redesigned interior and soft-touch materials as well as a more comfortable and spacious cabin than previous models, this is now elevated to give the feeling of being in a premium SUV. Except, of course, you can do more and enjoy more with the capabilities of the ‘Built Ford Tough’ Ranger.

6. Stand out with a bold new exterior

The Ranger has always appealed as a stylish looking truck. It continues this attribute in the next-generation Ranger which has a commanding presence and athletic exterior design. From the pronounced wheel arches and strong horizontal upper grille bar to the unique new C-clamp matrix LED headlights (on selected variants), the next-generation Ranger once again leads in looks.

7. Power and performance

Though looking stylish, the next-generation Ranger has all the capabilities that Ford trucks have been known for. It can work as hard as it plays and for those who use it for work, Ford’s proven 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine is the ideal powertrain to get work done.

There’s also the more sophisticated Bi-Turbo engine with its muscular character that provides maximum power of 210 ps and a whopping 500 Nm of torque. And though it is powerful, it’s also efficient which means good fuel economy as well. A proven 10-speed automatic transmission gives the wide spread of ratios to have a gear for every kind of situation.

For car companies, volume is crucial to the success of the business. One way to get volume is to cover many segments of the market so the bigger companies will have a broad range of products to compete in almost every segment. Of course, the products must also be appealing and sell well too.

So it’s impressive that Isuzu Malaysia, with just the D-MAX pick-up truck as its primary product (plus commercial vehicles), it has been among the top 10 brands in Malaysia. In fact, since being established in 2005, the company has mainly sold the D-MAX which has been locally assembled. And with each new generation being improved in many ways, annual sales kept rising.

Despite ongoing production issues for the whole industry, record sales of the D-MAX were achieved with 1,233 units delivered around the country in March this year. That was the company’s highest ever monthly sales volume in 18 years, and a big jump from the previous record of 885 units recorded in December 2014.

Following the debut of the latest generation a year ago, demand for the D-MAX has continued at high levels and like other companies, supplies are still not as much as Isuzu Malaysia would like. Nevertheless, the orders keep coming in and although it is not yet in the middle of its production cycle, the company has added enhancements to its flagship X-Terrain which already has an impressive list of features.

“The new-generation Isuzu D-Max remains our source of pride as it bridges the gap between how pick-up trucks should perform and what customers desire. The flagship D-MAX X-Terrain, in particular, sought to ensure customers enjoyed some truly stand-out features that make their motoring safer and more pleasurable,” said Isuzu Malaysia’s CEO, Shunsuke Okazoe.

For the latest D-MAX X-Terrain, there are now two more exterior colours – Silky Pearl White and Onyx Black. These join Valencia Orange, the distinctive finish that makes the D-MAX stand out even more among other pick-up trucks.

Another key addition is the Around-View Monitor that provides a 360˚ view on all sides of the vehicle. Using small camera around the vehicle, the imagery captured in real-time is merged into a simulated image that looks like the camera is above the vehicle. The view appears on the 9-inch display panel whenever reverse gear is selected, and there is a 3D guide to help the driver maneuver and position the truck. No more white knuckles parking the long vehicle!

For those who have new smartphones that can recharge wirelessly, there is a charging pad in the D-MAX now. Apart from being convenient as no cable is needed, the phone can be left on the pad and kept charged while having uninterrupted Bluetooth connectivity for music or maps without draining the phone battery.

Isuzu Malaysia has also added a welcome light, which gives a touch of class. LED lamps beneath the vehicle illuminate the surrounding foot areas when the doors are unlocked. When used in tandem with the follow-me home lights, the driver and passengers can move around the vehicle at night confidently as the ground will be well lit.

Finally, exclusive lighted scuff plates are provided and not only help protect the sills from minor scratches but also offers an added touch of elegance to the D-MAX X-Terrain. What we also hope Isuzu Malaysia will provide again are those ‘stealth’ side steps which automatically slide in and out.

“The popularity of the Isuzu D-MAX range, particularly the X-Terrain variant, remains healthy with many first-time owners reveling in life with a modern pick-up truck. Its inspiring safety, comfort and go-anywhere, do-anything versatility has led to a gradual migration of saloon car owners. I believe that with these new added features and colour choices, the D-MAX X-Terrain will continue to appeal to many more who will be tempted to convert,” said Chief Operating Officer, Kenkichi Sogo.

The updated Isuzu D-MAX X-Terrain is available for booking from today at all authorized Isuzu showrooms, with deliveries beginning from mid-July. The revised price for this version is now RM146,938.40 (without insurance), which is slightly more than before.

New Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain: Why other pick-up truck brands should be worried

It’s been a while since the pick-up truck segment saw a new competitor appearing. Although there have been some models from China and India purely for commercial use, there have been few targeted at the larger ‘lifestyle’ market that was born in the late 1990s when the regulations on ownership changed.

Now Angka-Tan Motor Sdn Bhd (ATM) will challenge the status quo with its new Vigus Pro from Jiangling Motors Company Ltd (JMC). Unlike other pick-ups from China, the Vigus Pro is stylishly designed and equipped like a passenger car. It is a full-fledged truck with 4×4 and the load-carrying capabilities if needed.

Assembled locally
ATM is not testing the market and seems to have enough confidence to jump straight in with the new model by committing it to local assembly. As ATM is affiliated with the Tan Chong Group, it is only natural that the vehicles will be assembled at Tan Chong’s plant. In this case, it is the younger one in Serendah, just off the North-South Highway after Rawang, Selangor. This is also where most of the Nissan models are assembled.

For now, the Vigus Pro is available in just one variant which is priced from RM98,888 (without insurance) in Peninsular Malaysia. It will be sold through a network of dealerships which presently number 13, with an equal number of aftersales outlets also established. A warranty of 3-years or 100,000-km (whichever comes first after registration) is provided.

Speaking at today’s launch, Tan Keng Meng, CEO of Warisan TC Holdings Bhd and Executive Director of ATM, said: “The JMC Vigus Pro is a stylish and versatile pick-up truck developed with premium engineering. Whether it’s for work or play, the Vigus Pro is ready to meet the demanding requirements of pick-up truck users in Malaysia after proving itself as the second best-selling pick-up truck in the Chinese market.”

Bold, distinctive looks
The styling of the Vigus Pro is certainly bold and distinctive, and it should stand out in a crowd of pick-ups. It has all the modern design elements like slim headlamps, LED daytime running lights and 3D taillamps. A sports bar in fitted behind the double cab and incorporates the third brake light.

Size-wise, it’s about the same as the Toyota Hilux, which has been the market leader for years. It has a bit more width, which could mean a bit more comfort within. It has traditional construction, meaning body-on-chassis, with the ladder frame chassis providing durability.

Ford-based TDCi engine?
While most of the vehicle has been developed by JMC, the Puma engine appears to have Ford involvement. It even has a ‘TDCi’ badge on it, which would be familiar to Ford Ranger owners. Ford is in the picture because the American carmaker has had a share in JMC since the mid-1990s, so there would be some technology-sharing and engines may be among them.

The engine in the Vigus Pro is a 2-litre unit with high-pressure common-rail fuel injection system and a variable geometry turbocharger and intercooler. It develops 141 ps/340 Nm and is mated to an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission with manual shift option and paddle shifters. The fuel consumption claim is pretty good at 12.8 kms/litre which should give a range of almost 900 kms with the 68-litre fuel tank.

2021 JMC Vigus Pro

Full-fledged 4×4 BorgWarner system
The Vigus Pro has a transfer case to direct power to the front and rear axles. The 4×4 system comes from BorgWarner, one of the leading companies in drivetrains. There are High and Low ranges as well as 2WD which can all be selected with an electronic rotary dial – no more having to struggle with a secondary lever. The rear axle is also fitted with an Eaton limited-slip differential (LSD) lock for better traction in very slippery conditions.

Additionally, there’s Hill Descent Control which is like having an experienced off-road driver handle driving downhill (which is not always easy in off-road terrain). The system maintains a safe speed by applying brakes when necessary and also adjusting engine power. All the driver has to do is watch the ground ahead and steer to avoid obstacles.

Other assistance features include Hill Start Assist, ABS with Electronic Brake-Force Distribution and Electronic Stability Program with Traction Control. So in as far as active safety is concerned, the Vigus Pro is comparable to an average passenger car of today.

To ensure that it appeals to its target customers, ATM has specified a high standard for the cabin. There’s a leather-wrapped multi-functional steering with steering controls for the infotainment system, cruise control and voice calls via Bluetooth connection. The infotainment system has an 8-inch colour touchscreen which also displays real-time images from the reverse camera.

First fleet customer
The first major customer to order the new model is Mayflower Car Rental Sdn Bhd, which will take 30 units of the Vigus Pro to add to its fleet of over 2,800 vehicles. The 30 units are about a tenth of the total number ATM expects to sell in the remaining months of 2021.

If you’re still saving for a Ford Raptor, here’s another way to get one into your home – for a lot less money. This October, LEGO Technic will release a Ford F-150 Raptor for just US$99.99 (about RM415) but you will have to put it together at your own assembly plant (no AP nor manufacturing licence required)

The LEGO model joins the brand’s Technic range that includes many other high-performance models such as the Ford Mustang, Ferrari 488 GTE, Lamborghini SianMcLaren Senna GTR and Bugatti Chiron.

Based on the bestselling truck in the world
However, this Raptor is not the same one as that imported to Malaysia by Sime Darby Auto ConneXion as it is a high-performance version of the F-150, the bestselling truck in the world for many years. The one sold in Malaysia is a high-performance version of the popular Ranger which was developed by Ford Racing.

The LEGO Technic Raptor measures 42 cm in length, 18 cm in width, and 15 cm high. It is made up of 1,379 parts, with the bodywork in a distinctive orange colour. The Technic models are for older children but even adults will have fun building them.

LEGO Technic Ford F-150 Raptor

Great degree of authenticity
As with the other models, LEGO has made sure there is a great degree of authenticity in the details, even though little bricks cannot fully replicate the curves of sheet metal. The detail is still impressive and even the 3.5-litre V6 engine (which in the real truck produces 450 bhp) has moving pistons.

There’s the massive skidplate below the front end and under the rear are the dual tailpipes. The working suspension and wheels are accurately designed in a smaller scale.

Registered in Michigan too
Inside the model, the cabin is also realistically created. All four doors can be opened, along with the bonnet and there’s a detailed truck bed as well at the back. LEGO has also included a registration plate from Ford’s home state of Michigan with the number HZR211.

An all-new Isuzu D-MAX for 2021 is due to make its appearance later this month, which is surprise news as this third generation model – which had its global debut just 18 months ago in Thailand – was expected to arrive only next year.

Explaining the speedy introduction, the Chief Operating Officer of Isuzu Malaysia’s Light Commercial Division, Masayuki Suzuki, said that the fast-tracked launch of the new D-Max was made possible through the support of Isuzu Motors Ltd. that views Malaysia as a strategic market. It is important enough that the company even invested it having its own assembly plant locally (in Pekan, Pahang).

“We are extremely thrilled that this impressive all-new Isuzu D-Max has been made available in Malaysia much earlier than expected. As the fifth country in the world to launch this model after its global introduction in Thailand, it stands as testament to the strong commitment from Isuzu Motors towards ensuring that the Malaysian market enjoys the latest selection of choice Isuzu vehicles,” he said.

Mr. Suzuki said the D-Max has an estimated price range between RM89,000 and RM145,000, depending on the variant and subject to government approvals. He said that those who wish to be the first owners can place their booking from today at all authorized Isuzu dealerships nationwide.

“The all-new Isuzu D-Max has made scores of new fans in the markets it has been introduced in and I believe that the same will happen here in Malaysia. Developed on a design theme of’ bold and sporty’, it presents a strong road presence from its masculine frontal design and purposeful outline that exudes a more athletic and dynamic stance.

With its larger overall dimensions and longer wheelbase that enable a more spacious cabin and larger load bed, owners will enjoy improvements in aspects such as comfort, space and versatility making this truck ideal for every purpose.

2 bodystyles, 2 engine choices
As before, there will be single and double cab bodystyles, and customers will have a choice of the award-winning RZ-4E 1.9-litre powerplant or a revised 4JJ-3TCX 3-litre engine. Both engines, which deliver strong output, have already been proven for their durability, reliability and fuel efficiency.

The new D-MAX has been tested by ASEAN NCAP and received the maximum rating of 5 stars.
