Proton Sales

In 2023, Proton achieved exceptional sales performance both domestically and internationally, with its sales in the Kingdom of Brunei Darussalam reaching a new record. Following a successful year, where the company surpassed 150,000 units in domestic sales, Brunei showed remarkable growth, setting a new sales record for Proton.

After selling 422 units in 2022, Proton’s sales in Brunei increased by 87% in 2023, with 789 units of Proton vehicles sold. This outstanding performance elevated the brand to fifth overall in the sales table, capturing a market share of 5.4%, up one spot and an increase of 2.2% over the previous year. The Total-Industry-Volume (TIV) for Brunei also saw growth, closing at 14,640 units for 2023, up from 13,000 units in 2022.

The Proton X50, which has been the best-selling Proton X-series model since its introduction in October 2020, emerged as the top-selling model in the B-segment SUV category in Brunei. With 476 units sold in 2023, the Proton X50 accounted for approximately 60% of total Proton sales in Brunei and secured the third position in its market segment.

Proton has achieved its best January sales performance since 2013 by selling 12,882 units (domestic and export). This marks a 1.3% increase compared to December 2023 and a significant 10.3% increase compared to January of the previous year. With this strong start, Proton comfortably retains the second position in the sales table, and its estimated market share for the month is 19.5%, showing a 3.3% increase from the previous month.

The Total-Industry-Volume for January is estimated to be 66,134 units, reflecting a decline of 15.6% compared to December. This drop is attributed to the traditional year-end push for higher vehicle sales in December 2023.

The newly launched Proton S70 has made a notable impact, with 1,442 units delivered in January and over 8,000 bookings. The model has received a positive response from customers and has already made its way to an export market in Brunei, with 15 units delivered ahead of its official launch this month.

Proton has set its sights on international market growth as a fundamental part of its long-term strategy. In 2022, the company witnessed a significant surge in volume, reaching 5,406 units and marking an impressive 79% increase compared to the previous year. Encouraged by this growth, Proton aimed to maintain a similar upward trajectory in 2023.

However, the year presented challenges due to external factors impacting global economies, affecting the company’s sales potential in several major export markets. Despite these obstacles, Proton has remained resolute in its ambition to expand its market reach beyond Malaysia. The company has been actively evaluating and exploring different countries for their market potential, while also steadily introducing products to existing markets.

According to FMT, transport consultant Rosli Azad Khan believes Proton has something to offer the global market as a result of its partnership with China’s Geely, but it has yet to show itself in a free market setting.

Proton has started off 2023 with a strong surge in sales, having its best start to a year since 2013. With 11,681 units (including export sales) delivered in January, the increase in sales compared to the same month a year ago was 162.3%. With the market size for January estimated to be 51,000 units, Proton’s share would be 22.9%, an improvement of more than 12% compared to January 2022.

The strong performance is due to greater supply of vehicles from the two factories in contrast to the reduced output that the carmaker experienced last year due to flood-related supply issues. At the end of 2021 and early 2022, there was very severe flooding in some areas of Selangor which affected the operations of some of Proton’s suppliers.
