Transporting new vehicles around the country has evolved greatly since the early days when they were driven by ferry-drivers to their destinations. This method had drawbacks in that the vehicle  might be driven for some distance before the customer received it, so it wasn’t ‘brand new’, and there was a risk of damage along the way. In some cases, ferry drivers were known to speed too, potentially causing damage to the engine.

By the 1990s, the volume of new vehicles had grown significantly and the use of ferry-drivers was stopped except for special cases. Instead, specially built car-carriers appeared and each could carry a number of cars on it. The cars were secured properly and apart from rain and dust (and perhaps flying stones), were relatively safe from damage as they were sent from port to stockyard, or assembly plant to showrooms.

European-designed car carriers
With more than 30 years of experience in the Malaysian automotive logistics industry, Datuk Kumar Prabakaran obviously knows this history well and has seen how the needs of customer have changed over the years. He now offers a brand-new state-of-the-art vehicle carrier service, Starrtrek Carriers Sdn Bhd, using the best-in-class European-designed car carriers.

The car-carriers are the Confidential Auriga Deluxe 122 and Blizzard semi-trailers which are expected to be game-changers for Malaysia’s automotive logistics market. Thanks to the combination of high-quality craftsmanship and build quality, the Auriga Deluxe will move vehicles without being subjected to the harsh Malaysian weather, road gravel and stone chips along the way. This is because the trailer is enclosed by panels on all side

The Blizzard does not have the enclosure but is still built of high quality and can load more units per trip than the norm in Malaysia. GPS trackers and surveillance cameras are installed for safety and compliance.

Scania prime movers
Both the car-carriers, which use Scania prime movers, are equipped with advanced hydraulic systems for safe and easy vehicle loading and unloading with minimal handling. The use of  lightweight high-yield steel combined with new technology and innovation enables multiple high loading capacities.

The Confidential Auriga Deluxe can accommodate a maximum of 6 passenger vehicles or up to 4 SUVs per trip, while the Blizzard can transport a maximum of 10 units of cars (depending on the dimension and kerb weight).

“With this state-of-the-art car carrier, we are setting another benchmark for higher quality and no compromise vehicle logistics service. We are proud to be a pioneer in this field and to be able to offer our customers even higher quality door-to-door services,” said Datuk Kumar Prabakaran, who is Managing Director of Starrtrek Carriers.

Isuzu is ‘King’ of commercial vehicles in Malaysia

Scania Malaysia recently handed over vehicles to three of its key customers in the northern region – Sin Hock Soon Transport Sdn Bhd, Nurkasih Holiday & Tours Sdn Bhd and LLZ Haulage Sdn Bhd – which received 17 trucks, six buses and two trucks respectively.

The keys were presented by Scania Southeast Asia Managing Director, Marie Sjödin Enström to Sin Hock Soon Director, Mr. Tony Yew; Nurkasih Holiday & Tours, En. Hafisol; and LLZ Haulage, En. Tajnoor at the Scania Butterworth service centre. The three customers cited the performance, reliability, fuel economy and safety that Scania vehicles offer, all of which contribute to the profitability and sustainability of their businesses as well as Scania’s excellent after sales service.

Sin Hock Soon Transport and LLZ Haulage purchased the G410LA6x2MSZ trucks, 17 units and 2 units respectively. These G-series trucks promises powerful performance and increased fuel savings and are suitable to attain the best profitability during long-haul operations. Meanwhile, the six buses acquired by Nurkasih Holiday & Tours – five K360IB4x2 and one K250IB4x2 – feature a powerful engine with higher torque at lower revs and are equipped with the Scania Opticruise gear-change that promises better comfort while reducing clutch and synchromesh wear.

Facilitated by Scania Credit, these new buses and trucks come with the standard package of the two-year free Scania Maintenance; two-year free 24/7 Scania Assistance and a ten-year free Scania Fleet Management System (FMS). “We are proud to be a partner for Sin Hock Soon Transport and LLZ Haulage for their long-haul operations. We are also proud of our partnership with Nurkasih Holiday & Tours for their tour operations. We are indeed very happy that these established companies have placed their trust in Scania for the sustainability of their businesses,” said Managing Director of Scania Southeast Asia, Marie Sjödin Enström.

The event also saw Scania presenting an award to Express Seni Budaya (M) Sdn Bhd for achieving the best fuel savings for a competition for the bus category based on the Scania Fleet Management System. The FMS is a total solutions approach from Scania for its customers to achieve the best profitability and efficiency in their businesses by gathering data from the driver’s performance and vehicle.

That data is then used together with methods such as driver training and coaching to increase the productivity of the fleet, reduce fuel consumption and eventually reduce the cost of operations. The handover of vehicles was held in conjunction with the Scania Open Day, which served as an opportunity for staff and their immediate family members as well as customers to mingle, understand what Scania can offer as an employer and have a more intimate look at how the company operates.

Also on site for them to see and understand were information counters for Scania Genuine Parts and Scania Fleet Management System, a Scania Truck Simulator game console and a Scania autonomous platooning table that depicts the future of the industry which Scania is developing. “Scania’s continuing success is based on our employees and our core values. We focus on the individual and our future success depends on the achievements from our employees,” said Marie. “We are currently driving the shift towards a sustainable transport system. The Scania Open Days allow us to showcase what our solutions can do and gain feedback from customers and even families of staff. All of these for continuous improvement purposes. Only then can we make that shift”, she added.

Scania (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. has officially launched its upgraded Port Klang branch that will serve to strengthen sales and services for its customers within the region. Our parts add value to their business because they are engineered for ultimate performance, endurance, fuel economy and safety, as well as lower environmental impact such as reduced carbon emissions” added Marie.

Because maximum uptime is important for truck operators, Scania has added on more working bays – bringing it to a total of 22 work bays – to ensure that customers within the region get the highest quality advice, maintenance and parts whenever needed to help their business.

Service at Scania Port Klang is carried out by 22 skilled technicians, who can now work on up to 30 vehicles per day with the facility upgrades. Like all Scania employees, these technicians continuously receive formal training and undergo on the job learning to enhance their skills, knowledge, professionalism and teamwork to ensure that they deliver a more effective service to their customers.

With the belief that sustainable transport is all about moving people and goods while contributing to economic and social development without jeopardising human health and safety or endangering the environment, the Scania Port Klang team will strive to provide its customers with tailored solutions that promise to bring about efficiencies within the customers’ entire transport flow.
