Setel

Setel, introduced in 2018, has made things more convenient for motorists as they can make contactless payments. The mobile app allows motorists to make payments using their smartphone in the car when parked next to a Setel-linked pump at PETRONAS stations.

During the pandemic, the value of Setel was very clear as there was no need to interact with the cashier or even touch the keypad to enter the PIN. It was only a pity that the filling process still needs to be done by the driver but maybe one day, it will be automated, as Hyundai has shown with its prototype robot handling charging of EVs.

Over the years, Setel has kept track of feedback from users and noticed that there were some people who may have older phones with limited functionality and connectivity. It’s like having an old computer which has difficulty running the latest software, so new features cannot be enjoyed.

Setel users now have a more convenient option of starting refuelling with the ‘One-Tap Fuelling’ feature. This allows them to activate the pump with just one tap upon arrival at all PETRONAS stations nationwide. The new solution is available to the first 1,000 registered Setel users around Malaysia, with a staggered rollout in the next 2 months.

Current Setel users who are interested to receive early bird access can opt-in by posting an Instagram Story or Tweet of their Dah Setel So Far page with the caption: “I want One-Tap Fuelling now”, tag @setel and include the #SetelOneTapFuelling hashtag.

From now until October 4, 2022, they also have a chance to win limited edition Setel gift boxes when they upload their most creative video on Instagram or Twitter showing their experience using the ‘One-Tap Fuelling’ feature’

In the upcoming enhancements, motorists will be able to pre-set their preferred fuelling amount – either by litres or a full tank, in the Preferences page when setting up the new feature. Motorists can also pre-set their preferred payment method, which includes CardTerus for direct payments via a debit or credit card, as well as Setel Share, which allows users to share their Setel Wallet or CardTerus with two others to pay whilst jointly earning Mesra points.

“We are constantly innovating and developing solutions that meet our users’ ever-evolving needs, especially in this endemic period where Malaysians are travelling more frequently than before. Over the past 4 years, our loyal users have continuously raved about their refuelling experience at PETRONAS stations. With this new enhancement that brings about a refuelling journey from the usual 5 clicks to just one tap through a one-time setup, Setel offers a more personalised and faster refuelling journey for its users. Gone are the days of rummaging through wallets for cash or cards to refuel and earn loyalty points,” said Mazlin Erawati Ab Manan, Chief Executive Officer of Setel.

Setel’s contactless service can be used at EV charging stations as well.

Setel has been in the market since July 2018, offering a mobile platform for motorists patronising PETRONAS stations. In recent times, it has also added EV charging for use by those owning electric vehicles. Its services include Setel Express, an in-app service for Setel customers to track their e-commerce deliveries and pick up/drop off parcels at selected PETRONAS stations.

Looking back, the introduction of the Setel e-payment system by PETRONAS was timely. With the need for social distancing brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the cashless payment system made fuel purchases possible without having to interact with station staff.

Even the process of setting the amount required could be done from a mobile device from inside the car, although the driver would still have to get out and handle the pump nozzle. Perhaps one day that too will be automated…

The Setel Wallet now becomes more useful with Deliver2Me, another feature which uses the cashless payment process. Deliver2Me allows Setel users to purchase selected items from participating Kedai Mesra outlets at PETRONAS stations and have them promptly delivered directly to their vehicle while refuelling.

Deliver2Me is initially available at 6 participating PETRONAS stations in the Klang Valley and will progressively be available at all Setel-enabled stations nationwide during Q1 2021. The Setel system is already available at 800 participating Kedai Mesra outlets which accept the Setel Wallet. With the Deliver2Me feature, there is the option to pay for items in Kedai Mesra with minimal physical contact as an added safety benefit necessary in these times.

As with fuel purchases, customers can earn Mesra points automatically when using the Setel system (provided they have linked it to their Mesra card). Points redemption can also be done directly through the application.

“At Setel, we’re constantly pushing boundaries to deliver a seamless and frictionless experience to our customers beyond fuel. For instance, customers no longer need to wait in line after refuelling to grab a cup of coffee and nasi lemak through Deliver2Me,” said Iskandar Ezzahuddin, CEO of Setel.

“We are pleased to offer greater convenience to over 1.5 million Setel users through our cashless payment system in Kedai Mesra. This is just a stepping stone in our journey of expansion as we add more intuitive features tailored to individual customers, in line with PETRONAS’ growing offerings,” he said.

The Setel app is available for iOS and Android devices and can be downloaded and installed for free from the Apple Store, Google Play Store and Huawei AppGallery.

PETRONAS Setel smartphone fuel payment application available nationwide

Since July 2018, Setel – the PETRONAS payment application – has been available to motorists in the Klang Valley, providing a level of convenience that is unprecedented in Malaysia. Not surprisingly, it has been well received and used, with over 3 million transactions up till the end of January 2020. During the year and a half it’s been available, PETRONAS would have been fine-tuning the system and paying attention to feedback from customers with the aim of making it better.

Now Setel is ready to be enjoyed by more motorists and PETRONAS is making it available nationwide (including in East Malaysia) from today. The e-payment app can be installed on smartphones running on the iOS or Android systems, with the app distributed for free through the Apple Store and Google Play Store.

SETEL

Not ‘another e-wallet’
PETRONAS officials stress that it is not ‘another e-wallet’ although it does store monetary value that is used for payment of purchases of fuel. It is first and foremost a payment solution which enables a motorist to use the smartphone to make payment directly while parked next to the pump. However, until PETRONAS develops a system which can also automatically connect the fuel nozzle to the car, the driver will still have to get out and insert the nozzle.

The advantages of this approach of using the smartphone and app to make payment is that there is no need to go to the station counter to make payment (if paying by cash), nor is there a need to go through a few steps using a credit/debit card. It’s pretty much a seamless process which will please those with kids on board as they don’t have to leave the kids in the car while they go and make payment.

MESRA card can be integrated
Besides this convenience, Setel also integrates the MESRA loyalty card program so points for purchases are electronically stored right away. Redemption using Setel is also possible as part of the integration. Reloading of the stored balance is done like e-wallets with either an authorized link to a credit card/debit card or bank account.

There’s also a ‘family feature’ whereby a parent can allow his or her Setel account to be used by the children. This not only tracks expenditures but Setel will also provide a monthly statement and for those who require receipts to make claims, these will also be available.

Setel

“The current features of Setel are just the beginning,” said Azrul Osman Rani, Managing Director & CEO of PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad. “Anchored on seamless and frictionless experience, we will be providing the right solutions and partnerships to enrich the customer journey beyond refueling.”

Special ‘Pit Stop’ offers at stations
One new feature being introduced is the Setel Pit Stop which will have special offers for snacks and drinks that will be broadcast through the app. Motorists who are pumping petrol can be made aware of these offers at the station and make purchases using Setel. They can then collect the items from Pit Stop areas on the way out. According to a PETRONAS executive, this will not be available at every station for now as they want to see response and get feedback.

To welcome those who install Setel for the first time, PETRONAS is offering a 10% cashback on fuel purchases (Klang Valley only). The user must purchase PRIMAX fuel using Setel 3 times within 30 days of account registration and the first 3 fuel transactions have to total to a minimum of RM90. The maximum 1-time cashback and cashback value of RM15 per user.
