Subaru Impreza

David Richards, who started Prodrive as a motorsport and automotive engineering firm in 1984, is very familiar with motorsports. While he has been involved in various roles in the sport – including being co-driver with Ari Vatanen when they won the World Rally Championship (WRC) in 1981 – his company is probably best known for its involvement with the Subaru rally team. The 18-year association through the 1990s to 2008 was one of the most successful partnerships in the sport.

It’s no surprise then that the Subaru Impreza holds a special place in Richards’ heart and Prodrive has created its own car called the P25 which takes inspiration from the 22B version, arguably the most iconic Impreza.

“The original 22B Impreza is considered the most iconic of Subarus and highly sought after. We wanted to enhance everything that made that car so special by applying the very latest technology to create our own modern interpretation of a car that’s established a place in motoring history,” said Richards who presented the car today at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England.

It’s been 25 years since Prodrive debuted the 2-door Impreza World Rallycar as a special edition. Only 424 of these road-legal cars were manufactured. Over time, it has achieved cult status as the ultimate turbocharged 4-wheel drive car of its era.

Peter Stevens, who styled the original Impreza WRC in 1997, as well as subsequent Prodrive limited edition Subarus, has restyled a number of features of the P25. Also on the team was technical director, David Lapworth, who was responsible for developing the first Impreza WRC 25 years ago.

Now, using the latest technology and materials, Prodrive has reimagined what this car would be like in 2022. Just 25 cars will be produced, each with an original 2-door Impreza WRX chassis at its core. This is the very same chassis used in the first Impreza WRC but now with reduced weight, a more powerful engine and improved vehicle dynamics.

Reduced weight
Extensive use of carbon composite means the car weighs less than 1200 kgs. Under the bonnet is the latest 2.5-litre flat four ‘boxer’ engine producing over 400 bhp/600 Nm, combined with a 6-speed semi-automatic gearbox, WRC-derived launch control and turbo anti-lag. Prodrive’s own tests show that it can reach 100 km/h from standstill in under 3.5 seconds.

Weight has been removed from the chassis by manufacturing the boot, bonnet, roof, sills, door mirrors, front and rear quarters. The WRC-style rear wing and bumpers are from carbon composite  while inside, there are optional lightweight racing seats with carbonfibre door cards and a lithium-ion battery.

The engine is based on Subaru’s latest 2.5-litre cylinder block but has been totally re-engineered by Prodrive’s powertrain team with bespoke internal components. These include new cylinder liners, pistons, conrods, and a valvetrain with variable cam timing. A Garrett motorsport turbocharger has been chosen and has a high performance intercooler and airbox, with an Akrapovic titanium and stainless steel racing exhaust system.

The engine is mated to a 6-speed sequential gearbox with helical cut gears and semi-automatic shift via a paddle on the steering column, giving precise gear changes in 80 milliseconds. The car has a WRC-style launch control system, which combines the fly-by-wire throttle and clutch in the floor mounted pedal box to automatically take the car through first, second and third gear to achieve the optimal acceleration from standstill without any driver intervention.

Power goes to all four wheels via a drivetrain with an adjustable active centre differential and limited-slip differentials front and rear. McPherson strut suspension has been retained but with machined aluminium uprights which can be tuned for camber and geometry optimised for the wider track. The Bilstein dampers are adjustable for compression and rebound while the springs and anti-roll bars optimise the tarmac handling.

Stopping power is provided by AP Racing brakes with 6-piston calipers at the front and 4-piston calipers at the rear. Prodrive’s own 8.5 x 19 rims are fitted and standard tyres are Bridgestone Potenza 235/35 which are matched to the dampers.

In the cabin, the dashboard has a full width high-definition multi-page display, including a data logger. For those wishing to take the car on track, the driver can select from various throttle response and engine performance maps, including anti-lag adjustment. There is also a WRC-style ‘fly-off’ hydraulic handbrake which automatically disengages the centre differential to remove drive to the rear wheels. This is in addition to the standard electric parking brake.

While Prodrive’s focus has been on the driving experience, the interior has also been upgraded. There’s an authentic late 1990s Impreza interior with a mix of leather, Alcantara and carbon trim.  The P25 can carry four passengers, but there is also the option to remove the rear seats and have a partial safety cage fitted.

The successful Subaru team cars in the World Rally Championship were prepared and run by Prodrive over an 18-year period.

Paying home to the Impreza roots
“The iconic blue Subarus bring back memories of an extraordinary era of the WRC and it was the Impreza 22B that brought this rallycar performance to the road. By reimagining this car using the latest technologies and materials, the Prodrive P25 pays homage to its roots and there will be little else able to match its performance on the open road. I therefore believe we have achieved our vision of creating our own modern interpretation of the most iconic Subaru Impreza ever,” declared Richards.

The P25 which ran at Goodwood today is the first development car and will be used for an extensive test and development programme. The 25 production cars will each be priced from £460,000 (around RM2.48 million), with the first being delivered to customers later this year.

Prodrive starts division to restore and support competition cars it built since 1984

Subaru USA has reported that August 2017 has been its best sales month in the company’s history. It stated that 63,215 vehicles have been sold in that month which accounts for a 4.6% increase compared to the same period last year.

This marks the first time that the automaker has managed to shift this many vehicles in one month. The previous sales record was in December 2016, when the company sold 63,177 vehicles in total.

This has helped bolster Subaru’s sales yearly figures even further with an 8.1% percent increase with 423,728 vehicles sold, compared to the same period in 2016. This also means that August marked the 42nd consecutive month with 40,000+ vehicle sales for the company.

Demand for models like the Crosstrek, Impreza and Outback were considerably strong, Even its niche sports car, the BRZ, enjoyed a surge in sales compared with August 2016. This means that the trust of US car buyers have in the brand is growing with each passing year.

“It was our 69th consecutive month of yearly, month over month sales increases. Our retailers gave a truly exceptional effort and we are on pace for our 9th consecutive sales record,” said Jeff Walters, senior vice president of sales, Subaru of America, Inc.

“The Crosstrek easily had its best month ever and we welcome the all-new 2018 model with the introduction of its advertising and marketing campaign in September that we know will resonate with customers,” he later added.

Subaru has had a strong presence in the US car market for several decades and is considered one of the most sort after/ trusted Japanese brands. Here in Malaysia, demand for Subaru vehicles have started to increase as well, thanks to enticing new models with relatively affordable price tags.

Subaru has confirmed that the all-new Impreza will make its European debut at the upcoming 67th Frankfurt International Motor Show on the 12th of September 2017. Built on the Subaru Global platform, the new car features a new design and award-winning safety tech that make it an enticing vehicle to own.

Sporting angular but elegant contours, the new Impreza looks more grown up while still retaining some of the sportiness that made the previous generation cars attractive purchases. The same is true for the rear albeit with bigger and wider headlights that dominate the rear hatch. Overall its a decent looking Subaru, which should be to the liking of European and Asian car buyers.

The car will come equipped with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, which is one of the better traction systems in the business.

Under the hood is the tried and tested Boxer engine that has powered Subaru vehicles for generations. Its distinctive raspy exhaust note is unmistakable and is considered one of the better traits of an Impreza.

Since its built on the new platform, the car has a 5mm lower centre of gravity than the outgoing one, an attribute Subaru says, will contribute to better handling stability and greater steering response.

Several new safety features are fitted as standard, which include EyeSight. Basically, it is Subaru’s advanced driver assist technology.

This latest generation system aims to provide world-class level of collision safety, which should help avoid or reduce the severity of impacts in the event of an accident.

The car has already been winning awards around the world, including the Japanese Car of the Year in December of last year. It has also received high safety scores in various crash test evaluations that have been conducted by various safety research entities.

The first generation Impreza was launched in 1992, and with the introduction of each new iteration, the nameplate’s fan base has grown ever larger. Today, approximately 2.5 million cars have been sold worldwide.

We are sure you’ve heard of Ken Block, the rallying/rallycross racer and adrenaline junkie who’s known all around the world for his amazing gymkhana stunts videos. In them, Block executes some pretty amazing stunt maneuvers/driving while getting from point A to point in the most flamboyant way possible. It’s a more extreme take on gymkhana racing.

Unlike Block, most of us do not have the resources nor the expertise to have a specifically built gymkhana track and a supped up rally car to drive on it. Well, that’s where our story begins today. Tyler Witte, a Youtuber, has taken it upon himself to show the rest of us that you don’t need sponsorship backing to have fun on a gymkhana course.

The stunts in this video, which was reported by motor1 and car throttle, depicts some seriously entertaining action as Witte thrashes his modified first generation Subaru Impreza Coupe on a DIY gymkhana course setup at a construction site. Granted, the stunts aren’t as daring as those attempted by Block, but they are entertaining enough to show us car nuts that you can have motorsports-like fun on a budget. All you need is some ingenuity, technical know-how and enough open space to indulge in your own gymkhana shenanigans.

Little is known about what’s under Witte’s Impreza’s hood, but the first generation Impreza was produced in 1992-2000 and came with a number of engines ranging from the docile 1.5-litre EJ15 boxer to the high displacement 2.5-litre EJ25 – all of which, were flat four engines. The 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre engines came as turbocharged variants which offered impressive performance figures at the time. These engines were mated to either a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission.

The most coveted of the first generation Impreza cars was the coupe version called the Impreza 22B STI. Produced between March and August 1998, the 22B was built to commemorate the automaker’s 40th anniversary and to celebrate Subaru’s third consecutive manufacturer’s title in the FIA World Rally Championship. Compared with the standard car, the 22B received significant changes in design and mechanical upgrades, making it a vehicle with exceptional power and handling characteristics, but we digress.
