Used Cars

Sime Darby Auto Selection (SDAS), a unit of Sime Darby Motors, is offering an opportunity for its customers to derive income from their vehicles and also have the assurance of a guaranteed resale price at the end of a 12-month period. The programme, called ‘Fund Your Drive’, is in collaboration with TREVO, SOCAR Mobility Malaysia’s people-to-people car sharing marketplace.

The first of its kind in Malaysia, the ‘Fund Your Drive’ programme seeks to make car ownership for Malaysians more affordable and accessible. Starting from today until November 18, 2021, it offers the opportunity to purchase a reliable, refurbished vehicle from SDAS with a guaranteed resale price to SDAS within 12 months through the BuyBack option. In addition, they will also have a guaranteed income when they list their cars for rental on TREVO, which helps offset the costs of ownership such as loan repayments and maintenance fees.

Free auto servicing for 12 months
The guaranteed income from car rental, which covers at least 70% (terms and condition apply) of the monthly loan repayments, provides car owners with loan instalment support for 12 months. As part of the programme, car owners will also enjoy free auto servicing from SDAS for the 12-month period.

“This collaboration with TREVO offers a good opportunity for those who want to own an affordable car with the chance to earn extra income from it, which will also help in financing the car. Additionally, SDAS is also offering free 12-month servicing for TREVO Hosts participating in the ‘Fund Your Drive’ programme, which will provide a substantial amount of savings on car maintenance and ownership,” said Vi Thim Juan, Managing Director of SDAS.

“During this time of economic uncertainty for many, those who need to own a vehicle may be thinking twice due to the financial outlay required. Through a programme like ‘Fund Your Drive’, owners not only have a variety of reliable, pre-owned vehicles that suit their budget from SDAS to choose from, TREVO also offers them additional means to fund the expenses associated with owning a vehicle,” added Leon Foong, CEO of SOCAR Mobility Malaysia.

As an example, Mr. Foong said a TREVO host who owns a 2015 Hyundai Grand Starex can earn approximately RM850 a month if their car is booked for just 7 days in each month, while also keeping the car for personal use during the other 23 days in the month. The supplemental income is estimated to cover almost the full amount of the monthly loan instalment.

At the moment, the car industry has come to a standstill with the closure of retail outlets, so no business can be conducted. Of course, people in the car companies are still working and planning for the future. For Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM), one of the new developments that can now be introduced is the Hyundai Promise Approved Used Car Programme, which is supported by Sime Darby Auto Selection.

For trade-ins and used vehicle sales
This new programme is for trade-in of vehicles as well as sale of pre-owned Hyundai vehicles. The pre-owned units sold through Hyundai Promise come with genuine parts and the original engine. Each vehicle has been through stringent and rigorous inspections by trained technicians to ensure that it is in optimal electrical and mechanical condition. HSDM also confirms the vehicles have not been involved in major accidents as part of the certification.

Warranty and emergency assistance service
This means that customers will have peace of mind when purchasing these vehicles. To give them more peace of mind, all Hyundai Promise approved and certified vehicles come with an extended warranty of between 2 to 5 years, depending on the age of the vehicle and the mileage since original registration. Additionally, customers can enjoy 24-hour road assistance service in case of an emergency.

“Hyundai Promise is forward-looking, offering customers a full circle of sales services, from purchasing their first new Hyundai model to trading in their vehicles for a newer model, with attractive deals. As the name of the programme suggests, we promise good quality vehicles and worry-free ownership. Customers who make their purchase from Hyundai Promise will enjoy wonderful benefits including quality assurance, financial solutions, and extended warranty,” said Low Yuan Lung, Managing Director of HSDM.

He added that Hyundai Promise is an important business segment that complements Hyundai’s existing business ecosystem. It also aims to regulate the resale value of used Hyundai vehicles in Malaysia by establishing values for the models.

As part of its expansion, used car trading platform myTukar Sdn Bhd has taken another step towards ensuring that its processes and services are of high quality and professional. The company was recently awarded ISO 9001:2015 Certification for Quality Management Systems, and it is the first company within the used car market in Malaysia to have such certification.

ISO 9001:2015 is an international Quality Management Systems (QMS) standard developed and published by the International Organization for Standardization. The standard is based on several quality management principles, including an outlined process-based method, strong customer focus, and involvement of upper-level company leadership.

Global certification
Organizations worldwide use the standard to demonstrate the ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements. The scope of myTukar’s certification includes provision of used car vehicle inspection via online bidding platform, evaluation, transaction and trading of used cars at myTukar’s headquarters and its Glenmarie branch.

The certificate was issued to myTukar by SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd. The ISO certification process began in February 2020 and now that myTukar is certified, it must submit annual audits to retain its certification.

“We are committed to expand our customer touchpoints for an unrivalled car selling experience and are driven by our mission to digitalise and transform the traditional way of selling used cars. Complementing our current nationwide expansion of branches is our focus on quality and trust for customer satisfaction. Thus, the ISO 9001:2015 Certification is timely as it ensures that myTukar is able to meet our commitment which is to be the trusted, transparent, effective and efficient online Car Selling platform to benefits our customers,” said Fong Hon Sum, CEO of myTukar.

The company began operations in 2018 and serves the used car industry through digitalisation of the purchasing process. According to Mr. Fong, myTukar’s 2,000 strong dealership network, with 13 inspection centres, has transacted over 23,000 vehicles with an estimated value of RM750 million.

“This achievement of the certification is made possible through the dedication and commitment of myTukar’s operations staff and suppliers,” he said.

The sale of pre-owned (not pre-registered) vehicles by franchise holders of various brands has been going on for some time. In fact, the first one in Malaysia might have been Federal Auto, which set up its own division to handle used cars as far back as the early 1970s. Other companies have also had used car divisions although most have not focussed greatly on this business, leaving it more to used car dealers.

These days, there is greater demand for pre-owned vehicles (a nicer term for used vehicles) and a number of companies, even premium brands, have invested in the business more substantially. They give more attention to the condition of the vehicles they offer, ensuring that the safety aspects are not compromised. In some case, they recondition the vehicle to ‘almost as good as new’.

Peace of mind purchase
Bermaz Motor, which handles Mazda, has also been dealing in pre-owned vehicles since 2015 through its Mazda Anshin centre in Glenmarie, Selangor. ‘Anshin’ is a Japanese word for ‘peace of mind’ so a selling point to customers is that they can have peace of mind buying from Mazda Anshin.

Many businesses are going online these days, partly due to the COVID-19 situation which has put limitations on interactions between people. As far as possible, companies now make it easier and safer for customers to view and know about what they offer before the need to actually be at the showroom.

Bermaz now as a website for its Mazda Anshin business and this serves as a one-stop platform for customers to sell or buy Mazda vehicles. It offers many company demo vehicles as well as those owned by customers who may have trade-in for a new model.

Every vehicle has to go through a thorough inspection and be certified before being offered for sale on the website.

111-point inspection to be certified
Regardless of whether the vehicles were previously demo units or in the company fleet, or a customer’s vehicle, every vehicle must undergo a comprehensive 111-point inspection. This is done by trained technicians at two authorized Mazda Service Centres in Selangor.

Owners who have this inspection done are charged a minimal fee of RM200. After the inspection, the owner will receive the best Mazda Anshin Certified Valuation and recommend selling price.

Mazda Anshin’s quality standards require that the pre-owned vehicles have had no major accident damages, no frame damages, and never been through a flood.

3 simple steps
Customers shopping for Mazda vehicles can browse through the Mazda Anshin website for the best- -value, best-quality models available, all with Mazda Anshin Certification. The existing warranty, if still in effect, will still be available to the new owner, as well as the free scheduled service based on from the original registration date.

So the next time you want a pre-owned Mazda, consider the offerings at the Mazda Anshin website. After all, it’s the company that knows Mazda best.

Besides offering brand new Bentley cars, Bentley Kuala Lumpur – the British brand’s official retail partner in Malaysia – now also offers pre-owned units. These are cars which are ‘Certified by Bentley’, a global programme which is said to set the benchmark for exclusive pre-owned vehicles.

50% of Bentleys registered are pre-owned
An estimated 85% of all Bentleys ever sold still on the road and in Malaysia alone, pre-owned Bentleys are said to make up about half of the total number of vehicles of the brand registered locally each year. This being the case, it has made sense for Bentley to also become involved in pre-owned units, besides its attention to aftersales services for existing owners.

“We believe the introduction of Certified by Bentley in Malaysia is an opportunity for us to extend the Bentley ownership experience to a wider number of potential customers,” said Jerry Lee, MD of Wearnes Quest, which operates Bentley Kuala Lumpur.

Certified by Bentley

The Certified by Bentley programme has rigorous requirements to ensure that each vehicle is prepared to an impeccable standard. This includes a detailed inspection in accordance with Bentley standards by factory-trained technicians.

Certificate of Authenticity and warranty
A Certificate of Authenticity accompanies each vehicle so the new owner will have full details of its history, particularly with regards to maintenance. The comprehensive 12-month warranty, covering mechanical, electrical and consequential failure, can be further extended for peace of mind.

Similar quality assurance and ownership experience
“A vehicle Certified by Bentley provides the same assurance in quality and ownership experience that a new car customer would have. When a customer selects a Certified by Bentley car, they are making an investment in a brand that has always crafted extraordinary vehicles,” said Mark Keeping, Head of Pre-Owned at Bentley Motors.

Additionally, the owner gains access to the benefits that Bentley owners typically enjoy such as invitations to exclusive events around the world and a Bentley Factory Tour, along with a subscription to the Bentley Magazine.

For those who are shopping for used cars, there are lots of places to go to. Additionally, there are also websites which have advertisements for used vehicles. However, when buying a second-hand product, there is always the question of the condition of the vehicle which is not fully known. Most used car dealers will take in vehicles, clean them up a bit and perhaps fix minor issues and then offer them for sale. Some may offer a ‘limited warranty’ with a verbal agreement that you can bring back the vehicle if problems develop.

Many vehicle distributors and authorised dealer chains also have their own used car business and where these companies are concerned, greater attention is given to ensuring their offerings are in the best condition possible and almost as good as new. They will carry out a thorough inspection and change parts that are deemed too worn out (especially those relating to safety). And as everything is professionally done, they are willing to certify their pre-owned vehicles too, as well as providing a warranty in some cases.

Premium Ownership Experience as well

Proton now has a used car website, providing car-buyers a convenient way to shop for used Proton vehicles. The Proton Certified Pre-Owned (PCPO) website provides a listing of current  stocks available at 36 dealers nationwide.

PCPO is a further extension of Proton’s used car business which began with the establishment of established a Used Car Management (UCM) division in 2019. Its task was to grow a network of dealers to sell used cars alongside new ones.

Dealers must meet qualifying criteria
From an initial pilot project comprising just 8 Proton outlets, there are now 36 in the PCPO programme. All of them have met several qualifying criteria, both financial and physical, and agree to perform the necessary steps to prepare their trade-in stock for sale. For instance, each car undergoes a comprehensive 201-point inspection and is given a new battery, fresh engine oil and an oil filter.

Other requirements for PCPO vehicles include being less than 7 years old with less than 130,000 kms covered at the  time of trade-in. They must also not have any flood or major accident damage that may affect their structural integrity.

“Proton’s PCPO is the next step for the company to build a holistic ecosystem. As we continue to offer new and  improved products, we also want to attract those interested in purchasing a used car and offer a quick and easy way  for customers to trade-in their current vehicles. All our PCPO cars get an extended one-year warranty for the engine  and transmission as well as a free service, redeemable up to 6 months after the date of registration,” said Roslan  Abdullah, CEO of Proton Edar.

Cars of other brands too
Proton will also sell cars from other brands that have been traded-in via its PCPO website. In this instance, the vehicles do not receive an extended warranty from the company but will still be thoroughly inspected and repaired if necessary prior to being put up for sale.

“Aside from helping to drive new car sales, the aim of Proton’s UCM division is to help stabilise and gradually build  the residual value of Proton vehicles. By offering high quality used cars, we hope to see a general lifting of prices for all our models, making it easier for customers to obtain competitive financing rates and raising trade-in values when they want to buy a new car,” added Encik Roslan.

“This nationwide expansion strategy is aligned to and complements CARRO Group’s strategy to continuously expand and digitalise car trading for the South East Asia Region.
