Through the Bugatti Sur Mesure programme, which boldly touts “near-infinite” options for customisation, Bugatti purchasers may customise their cars in any way they choose.
The beautiful Bugatti you see in the photos here, the Chiron Super Sport Golden Era, was the result of a buyer who really pushed that assertion to its absolute limit. The Golden Era took two years to create and 400 hours were devoted to the artwork you see on either side of the car. It was commissioned by an unidentified Bugatti collector who had a profound love for the automaker’s more than 100-year history.
Designers used special pens to make complex hand-drawn drawings right onto the bodywork. According to Bugatti, it’s one of the most difficult customised projects the firm has ever embarked on.
Achim Anscheidt, former Bugatti Design Director who oversaw the project stated that it was very clear to them from the beginning that the designers can only achieve an authentic finish for these sketches if they actually used the pens that we use for sketching on paper – anything else would result in something looking fake or low in quality.
The Type 41 Royale and Type 57 SC Atlantic are a couple of iconic paintings on the passenger side, while the driver’s side features 19 pictures tracing Bugatti’s development since 1987. That includes contemporary Bugs like the Veyron, Chiron, and EB110 as well as the well-known W16 engine.
These bespoke portraits are painted on a canvas with a two-tone gradient paint finish. The new-for-this-car Dore gold paint that runs from the A-pillar to the back of the car fades into the Nocturne Black on the front fascia, which we think was the most logical way to blend in the drawings.
Not only on the exterior but the cabin also features beautiful artwork. Three icons of Bugatti—the EB110, Veyron, and Chiron on one side, and the Type 35, Type 57 SC Atlantic, and Type 41 Royale on the other—are hand-painted on each door panel. A handwritten “One-of-One” identification and delicate Golden Era embroidery can be seen in other places.
Bugatti did not disclose the price of this masterpiece but one can only imagine what an artwork by Bugatti designers plus a Chiron Super Sport would cost. The car now awaits an official handover to its owner at Monterey Car Week.
