Lexus has officially introduced the 2025 IS 500 Ultimate Edition, a limited-run variant that pays homage to the performance legacy of the IS lineup and marks a symbolic farewell to the naturally aspirated V8 in a world increasingly shifting toward electrification and hybridisation. Only 500 units will be available across North America, with sales expected to commence later this year.
Since its global debut in 1999, the Lexus IS has evolved into a cornerstone of the brand’s performance sedan offerings. With around 1.3 million units sold in more than 40 countries and regions over the past two decades, the model has garnered a loyal following for its dynamic rear-wheel-drive layout and refined handling, positioning it as a serious rival to European competitors.
Under the bonnet, the IS 500 Ultimate Edition retains the 5.0-litre naturally aspirated 2UR-GSE V8 engine, delivering a robust 472hp and 535Nm of torque exclusively to the rear wheels via an eight-speed Sport Direct Shift (SPDS) automatic transmission. This powertrain has become a hallmark of the IS 500 F SPORT Performance grade, offering a uniquely visceral driving experience that is becoming increasingly rare in the segment.
Complementing the car’s powerful output is an advanced braking system, featuring 6-piston aluminium Brembo callipers and large 380mm ventilated disc brakes, designed for improved fade resistance and confident stopping power. These high-performance brakes are finished in red, adding a visual cue to their capability. Lightweight 19-inch forged alloy wheels from BBS, finished in matte black, reduce unsprung mass while reinforcing the vehicle’s purposeful stance.
The exterior styling of the Ultimate Edition builds on the athletic proportions of the IS 500 F SPORT Performance. A newly introduced exclusive body colour, dubbed “Wind,” offers a light metallic grey tone meant to evoke movement and agility. The design is both restrained and assertive, underscoring the vehicle’s dynamic intentions.
Inside, Lexus has curated an opulent yet performance-oriented cabin. The seats are upholstered in a combination of NuLuxe and Ultrasuede, finished in Circuit Red and Black. Enhancing the tactile experience, the steering wheel and gear selector are clad in dimple-textured leather, drawing inspiration from the Lexus LFA supercar. Red seatbelts and contrast accents are spread throughout the cabin, adding to the car’s sporty personality.
Additional bespoke features include a multi-layered analogue clock with red laser-etched detailing, a unique centre console badge denoting the car’s limited edition status, and special scuff plates. The 8-inch TFT display includes an Ultimate Edition-specific start-up animation, offering a subtle yet effective reminder of the car’s exclusivity every time the engine is started.
The IS 500 Ultimate Edition is the product of Lexus’ “Driving Signature” philosophy, a development ethos guided by chief engineers who are responsible for the emotional and tactile elements of each model. Much of this process takes place at the Toyota Technical Centre in Shimoyama, where rigorous testing ensures that every Lexus vehicle, particularly those with performance ambitions, delivers on the promise of linear handling, ride comfort, responsiveness, and refinement.
Safety has not been overlooked. The 2025 IS 500 Ultimate Edition comes equipped with the Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 suite as standard. This includes the Pre-Collision System with pedestrian and cyclist detection, Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist, and Left Turn Oncoming Vehicle Detection with automatic braking.
Highway driving is supported by All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, and Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, providing semi-autonomous capabilities designed to enhance driver confidence and reduce fatigue. Road Sign Assist and Automatic High Beams further round out the package, ensuring the IS remains competitive in both safety and convenience.
With the Ultimate Edition, Lexus presents not just a high-performance sedan but a closing chapter for its naturally aspirated V8 in the IS family. The car encapsulates over two decades of engineering excellence and driving pleasure, serving as a final salute to traditional motoring before the brand advances deeper into electrification. This limited-edition model is poised to become a collector’s item among enthusiasts and a poignant reminder of an era when performance was measured as much by feel as by figures.
