Proton has offered a first glimpse of the forthcoming e.MAS 5, the second vehicle in its e.MAS electric vehicle series, marking a significant step in the national carmaker’s electrification strategy. Although the full car remains partially concealed to preserve anticipation, the preview unveiled several technical and design details that signal Proton’s ambitions in the affordable EV space.

Two variants will be available at launch: the Prime and the Premium, each offering different battery capacities supplied by CATL. The Premium version is fitted with a larger LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery, delivering an estimated driving range of 325km, while the Prime is equipped with a smaller unit, offering approximately 280km on a single charge.

Despite its compact exterior, the e.MAS 5 surprises with its spacious interior. Proton claims the model comfortably seats five adults, made possible by the EV’s flat floor design, which allows for greater legroom at the rear. This was validated during on-site testing, where five larger-framed individuals were able to sit with ease and ample room.

Stylistically, the car embraces a minimalist, rounded silhouette with smooth contours and aerodynamic elements reminiscent of the SMART range. Design highlights include feather-like LED headlights, 16-inch aerodynamically optimised wheels, and semi-concealed door handles. The Premium variant adds a dual-tone roof for a floating visual effect, enhancing its aesthetic appeal.

The interior is centred around a 14.6-inch high-definition touchscreen display, powered by an automotive-grade processor and offering support for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Voice recognition is available in both English and Malay through Proton’s ATLAS Auto system, shared with the latest Proton X50. A crystal-style gear selector and two-tone steering wheel add a touch of sophistication to the cabin.

Storage space is another strong suit of the e.MAS 5. With 32 compartments throughout the vehicle, owners will find ample places to stow everyday items. The boot offers 375 litres of space, expandable to 1,320 litres when the rear seats are folded. One of the standout features is the 70-litre front trunk (frunk), which includes hydraulic struts for added convenience.

Charging infrastructure concerns have been addressed with the inclusion of a real-time charging map. Fast charging is efficient, with the battery able to charge from 30% to 80% in just 21 minutes. Although the e.MAS 5 is not performance-focused; it is agile where it matters most, and it accelerates from 0 to 50km/h in 3.9 seconds, ideal for urban traffic manoeuvres.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a single electric motor, supported by a rear multi-link suspension setup for improved ride comfort and handling. Safety has also been prioritised, with six airbags and an ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) suite comprising 12 intelligent features, including adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and lane departure warning.

To introduce the e.MAS 5 to Malaysians nationwide, PRO-NET has launched the MISI 5 preview tour, which will visit five major regions across the country. As Proton prepares to enter the competitive compact EV segment, the e.MAS 5 is positioned as a practical, tech-savvy, and family-friendly offering aimed at accelerating local EV adoption.

SAIC Audi’s latest offering, the A5L Sportback, has made a notable impact in the automotive market, amassing 9,800 pre-orders on its debut evening. As the world’s first internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle integrated with Huawei’s advanced driving assistance system (ADAS), the model marks a significant technological leap for combustion-powered cars.

Starting at 259,900 yuan (around RM171,000), the A5L Sportback has attracted considerable consumer interest, with around 30% of initial buyers opting for variants equipped with Huawei’s Qiankun intelligent driving technology. This represents a substantial shift in consumer expectations, with smart features once reserved for electric vehicles now making their way into conventional engine platforms.

Engineered on Audi’s new Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), the A5L Sportback incorporates the fifth-generation EA888 engine, delivering a maximum output of 268hp. It also features Porsche-derived VTG variable turbocharging technology and the MHEV Plus super mild hybrid system. These innovations combine to enable the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.6 seconds, demonstrating its performance capabilities despite its focus on comfort and intelligence.

What truly sets the A5L Sportback apart is its pairing of traditional combustion performance with next-generation driving intelligence. Unlike most vehicles currently equipped with Huawei’s ADAS, which typically employ a single LiDAR sensor, this model integrates two LiDAR units, enhancing the system’s spatial awareness and responsiveness on the road.

XPeng has officially revealed the new generation of its flagship electric sedan, the P7, in China, marking a significant evolution in both design and technology. Now measuring over five metres in length, the redesigned model brings a bold, futuristic presence to the road while integrating cutting-edge hardware and software developed in-house.

At the core of the new P7’s technological suite are three proprietary XPeng Turing chips, working in tandem with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8295P processor. The upgraded model comes with support for 5C ultra-fast charging across all variants, enabling significantly reduced charging times. The vehicle will be offered in three configurations, delivering an impressive CLTC-certified driving range of up to 820km, depending on variant.

Visually, the latest P7 introduces the ‘Xmart Face’ front fascia, characterised by a continuous star-ring light strip intersected with vertical beams that form an H-shaped lighting signature. This design language is echoed at the rear, where matching H-style tail lamps and an active rear spoiler reinforce the vehicle’s symmetrical visual identity. A full-width tailgate and integrated blue-lit intelligent driving indicators in the rear bumper complete the aerodynamic profile. The body achieves a drag coefficient of just 0.201 Cd, enhancing overall efficiency.

The expansion of Malaysia’s electric vehicle (EV) sector received a major boost with the arrival of BYD Zhengzhou, a purpose-built roll-on/roll-off (RORO) carrier vessel, at North Port, Port Klang. The vessel, which is part of BYD’s growing maritime fleet, delivered a new batch of fully-built EVs for Malaysian consumers, further solidifying BYD’s strategic commitment to the local market.

The BYD Zhengzhou, boasting a 7,000-unit vehicle capacity, is the seventh ship in BYD’s dedicated fleet and marks the brand’s first direct maritime delivery to Southeast Asia. In addition to Malaysia, the vessel is also scheduled to distribute EV units to the Philippines, Indonesia, and Singapore before making its final stop in Thailand and returning to China.

The deployment of the Zhengzhou is a significant demonstration of BYD’s investment in securing its global logistics infrastructure. By operating its own fleet, the company reduces dependence on third-party shipping providers, enabling tighter control over delivery timelines and supply chain coordination, an increasingly critical factor as China continues to dominate global EV exports.
