Welding Machine To Blame For Chery Omoda Axle Issue

Chery Auto Malaysia is taking proactive steps to address an incident involving the axle of certain Omoda 5 models. After conducting an in-depth internal investigation, the company has decided to recall a batch of 600 Omoda 5 units. Working closely with the Ministry of Transport (MOT), Chery Auto Malaysia aims to rectify all affected vehicles to ensure the highest standards of safety.

Lee Wen Hsiang, Vice President of Chery Auto Malaysia, emphasised the company’s commitment to providing safe and reliable transportation solutions. He stated that Chery Auto Malaysia voluntarily briefed the MOT on the product inspection status and the root cause of the Omoda 5 axle incident.

The investigation revealed that the issue stemmed from a facility upgrade, resulting in a miscalibration of the automated welding machine. Specifically, 60 units of Omoda 5’s produced on 15 August 2023 were affected. To address this, Chery Auto Malaysia has initiated a special service campaign to inspect Omoda 5 cars with rear axles produced between 14 to 17 August 2023, totalling 600 units.

Chery Auto Malaysia is prioritising customer safety and has taken steps to inform affected owners to bring their vehicles to authorised service centres for a detailed inspection. Additionally, a website has been set up for Omoda 5 users to check if their vehicles are affected by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

As of 3 May 2024, Chery Auto Malaysia has contacted more than 53% of the affected owners. To ensure customers are well informed, weekly updates will be publicly shared about the status of the recall program.
