Great Wall Motor (GWM) has officially unveiled the Tank 500 in Malaysia, positioning the full-size SUV as a new contender in the premium segment, combining hybrid efficiency with robust off-road credentials and a host of luxury features.
Available exclusively as a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), the Tank 500 is introduced to the local market at an introductory price of RM328,800. The SUV is engineered to meet the needs of buyers who seek a commanding road presence and all-terrain capability without compromising on comfort or modern technology.
The Tank 500 arrives with dimensions that reflect its stature—spanning 5,078 mm in length, 1,934 mm in width, and 1,905 mm in height, with a wheelbase measuring 2,850 mm. These proportions make it marginally larger than the Toyota Land Cruiser, asserting its presence as a formidable SUV both on and off the road.
Its design language reflects a deliberate blend of strength and sophistication. The vehicle comes equipped with LED headlights, daytime running lights, and fog lamps.
A panoramic sunroof, roof rails, 20-inch alloy wheels, a powered tailgate, and retractable side steps round out its exterior amenities. Customers can choose from three colours: Crystal Grey, Hamilton White, and Sun Black.
Powering the Tank 500 is a hybrid system comprising a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor. The petrol unit generates 244PS and 380Nm of torque, while the electric motor contributes 106PS and 268Nm.
Together, they deliver a combined output of 346PS and a torque figure of 648Nm. Power is transmitted via a 9-speed Hydraulic Automatic Transmission (HAT) and distributed through a selectable four-wheel-drive system.
Off-road performance is a core strength of the Tank 500. It features a mechanical centre locking differential along with electronically controlled locks for both front and rear axles.
The SUV also offers eleven selectable drive modes—four tailored for on-road use and seven calibrated for off-road scenarios. Specialised technologies such as Tank Turn, off-road cruise control, and water wading capability up to 800 mm—with assistance from a water depth detection system—further enhance its capabilities. In addition, a Body Transparent System using camera technology improves underbody visibility, making complex terrain navigation more manageable.
Inside the cabin, the Tank 500 offers a refined and technologically advanced environment. Passengers are greeted with quilted Nappa leather upholstery, with the front seats providing electric adjustment, ventilation, and massage functions.
Comfort is further supported by triple-zone climate control and retractable sunshades for rear occupants. The third row can be electronically folded or raised using controls mounted in the boot area.
Technology features prominently in the SUV’s interior, led by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The vehicle also includes a 12-speaker Infinity audio system, a head-up display, and wireless charging for mobile devices.
The Tank 500 is equally well-appointed in terms of safety. It comes fitted with six airbags and a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Key features include Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go functionality, Lane Keeping and Lane Centring Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Cross Traffic Alert with automatic braking at both the front and rear.
The Tank 500 comes with lifetime warranty for engine, transmission and HEV system, 8 years or 200,000km power battery warranty, 6 years unlimited mileage vehicle warranty and for a limited time offer, you get 5 years free service maintenance inclusive of labour and parts.
With its robust powertrain, upscale cabin, and advanced safety technologies, the GWM Tank 500 represents a compelling new option in Malaysia’s luxury SUV landscape. It is expected to appeal to buyers seeking a rugged yet refined hybrid SUV alternative to established nameplates. A full market launch is anticipated in the near future.
