Great Wall Motor (GWM) has officially introduced the upgraded versions of its Tank 500 Hi4-T and Hi4-Z plug-in hybrid off-road SUVs in China, marking a notable advancement in the brand’s electrified SUV offerings. These refreshed models bring improvements to their exterior styling, interior equipment, and driving assistance technologies. Pre-sales are expected to commence in August.
While the fundamental design of the Tank 500 remains consistent with its predecessor, subtle refinements have been applied to the front grille, and the rear now features the new “GWM” logo. The SUV’s dimensions remain unchanged, measuring 5,078 mm in length, 1,934 mm in width, and 1,905 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,850 mm. Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate the 29° approach angle, 24° departure angle, and a minimum ground clearance of 210 mm. Optional towing capabilities remain, offering a maximum capacity of 2,500kg.
A new exterior shade called Dunhuang Green has been added to the colour palette, joining the existing Kunlun Gold, Pamir Silver, and Mount Everest White.
Technological enhancements are among the key highlights of the new Tank 500. A Hesai ATX lidar unit is now positioned on the roof, accompanied by additional cameras mounted on the front fenders and rear spoiler. These upgrades are designed to support GWM’s third-generation Coffee Pilot Ultra driver assistance system. However, it remains unconfirmed whether the lidar system will be a standard feature across all trims.
The powertrain configurations are carried over from the previous iteration. The Hi4-T variant combines a 248hp 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with an electric motor, paired with a 9-speed hybrid automatic transmission (9HAT), resulting in a total system output of 402hp. It is powered by a 37.1 kWh ternary lithium battery, offering a pure electric driving range of up to 110 km.
The more powerful Hi4-Z version is equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and dual electric motors, mated to a 3-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). This configuration delivers an impressive combined output of 865hp. The larger 59.05 kWh ternary lithium battery allows for a pure electric range of 201km.
Inside the cabin, the Tank 500 retains its 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch central touchscreen integrated with the Coffee OS 3 infotainment system. A paddle shifter has now been added to the steering wheel column, while comfort is enhanced with Nappa leather upholstery that includes heating and ventilation for the seats.
Rear passengers can enjoy an upgraded entertainment experience via a 17.3-inch 3K ceiling-mounted screen, which supports six input methods including voice, gesture, touch, and remote control via smartphone. A 50 W refrigerator integrated into the centre console provides temperature settings from -6°C to 50°C, underscoring the SUV’s luxury credentials. Additionally, the rear seat backrests can be reclined between 25° and 35°, while the boot offers a maximum volume of 1,489 litres.
Available exclusively as a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), the pre-updated Tank 500 was introduced to our Malaysian market at an introductory price of RM328,800.
