Volvo XC70 Debuts as Brand’s First Long-Range Plug-in Hybrid with Over 200km EV Range

Volvo Cars has introduced the all-new XC70, its first long-range plug-in hybrid SUV, and the model arrives with a milestone: an all-electric driving range of more than 200km under the CLTC cycle. This marks the longest zero-emissions capability of any Volvo plug-in hybrid to date, signalling the brand’s next step towards a more sustainable product portfolio.

The XC70 is underpinned by Volvo’s new Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) platform, engineered specifically for long-range plug-in hybrids. The model has been designed to meet growing customer demand for extended-range electrified vehicles, particularly in China where pre-orders have already begun. Volvo Cars has confirmed that Europe will follow later, bringing the SUV to a wider audience in due course.

Fast charging is one of the car’s defining features, allowing the battery to be replenished from 0 to 80 per cent in just 23 minutes. The SUV also supports bi-directional charging, meaning the onboard battery can serve as a portable power bank for devices and appliances, particularly useful for outdoor activities and camping. With its efficient hybrid system, the XC70 is capable of covering more than 1,200km when combining its electric drive with the combustion engine, offering both flexibility and peace of mind for longer journeys.

In typical Volvo fashion, the new XC70 embodies Scandinavian design values with a calm yet confident stance. Its sculpted profile and defined shoulders project strength, while the gently tapering roof adds dynamism. At the front, a shield-like closed grille echoes Volvo’s fully electric models and incorporates an active grille shutter that enhances aerodynamics, cooling and cabin climate efficiency. At the rear, vertical C-shaped taillights are integrated into the glass, giving the SUV a clean, modern and distinctive appearance.

Inside, Volvo has prioritised space, comfort and premium materials. The minimalist Scandinavian cabin design incorporates smart storage solutions, a soft premium finish, and an acoustic-tuned sound system that enhances the sense of refinement. With Zero Gravity seating, large wheels, high ground clearance and all-wheel drive, the XC70 balances comfort with versatility, ensuring smooth journeys on highways as well as stability on rougher roads.

Technology is another key focus. The SUV comes equipped with an intelligent infotainment system, an AI-powered voice assistant, and over-the-air software updates. The driver benefits from a 12.3-inch digital display, a 15.4-inch free-standing horizontal centre display, and the option of a 92-inch augmented reality head-up display. Together, these features create an intuitive and immersive cockpit that places information where it is needed most. Remote connectivity via the Volvo Cars app allows functions such as pre-conditioning of the cabin to be controlled directly from a smartphone.

Safety, a cornerstone of the Volvo brand, is advanced further with the XC70’s Safe Space Technology. The system uses a combination of cameras, radars and sensors to monitor the surroundings in real-time, helping to avoid or mitigate collisions. Additional urban-focused safety solutions include a door opening alert designed to prevent accidents with passing cyclists. Intelligent driver assistance functions such as automatic lane change, Park Pilot Assist and active navigation support are also available to deliver a calmer, more confident driving experience.

Production of the new Volvo XC70 is already underway, with availability beginning in China through pre-orders. Its combination of long-range electric driving, fast charging capability, Scandinavian design and advanced safety technology positions it as one of Volvo’s most versatile offerings to date – a family SUV that promises comfort, capability and sustainability in equal measure.
