Mazda Motor Corporation has taken centre stage at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 with the unveiling of two concept models — the MAZDA VISION X-COUPE and the MAZDA VISION X-COMPACT. Both models represent Mazda’s forward-looking theme for this year’s exhibition: “The Joy of Driving Fuels a Sustainable Tomorrow.”

The MAZDA VISION X-COUPE is a crossover coupe that brings the brand’s KODO – Soul of Motion design language to a new level of sophistication. It’s a striking expression of Mazda’s belief that driving pleasure and sustainability can coexist.

Under its sculpted body lies a plug-in hybrid powertrain that pairs a two-rotor rotary turbo engine with an electric motor and battery, delivering an impressive 510PS. The car can travel up to 160 km in electric-only mode and achieve a total range of around 800 km when the engine and motor work together.

What sets the X-COUPE apart is its innovative approach to environmental performance. It’s designed to run on carbon-neutral fuel produced from microalgae and is equipped with Mazda’s proprietary “Mobile Carbon Capture” system, which absorbs CO₂ from the atmosphere as the car is driven. Mazda says this combination allows the vehicle to contribute to reducing carbon emissions the more it’s used — an ambitious concept that demonstrates the company’s drive toward a sustainable future without abandoning performance.

Proton has officially introduced the e.MAS 5, marking a significant step in the national carmaker’s transition into electric mobility.

The compact EV is closely related to the Geely Xingyuan but carries distinct Proton cues — including the signature tiger emblem on the nose, Proton lettering across the tailgate, and e.MAS 5 badging that identifies it as Malaysia’s own version of the city-focused electric hatchback.

The colour range largely mirrors its Geely counterpart with Moonstone White, Graphite Silver, and Slate Grey, while the Premium variant adds Marble Cream and Quartz Rose to the palette. The latter, a pale lilac hue, was inspired by the updated shades seen on the 2026 Xingyuan facelift.

Visually, the e.MAS 5 retains the soft curves and smooth surfaces of the original design, with slim LED lighting units, a closed-off front fascia, and chrome highlights along the front corners.

The Premium model distinguishes itself with a black roof and mirror caps. Unique to Proton’s version are the C-pillar star motifs and an interior “shooting star” light pattern, replacing the Chinese model’s city skyline theme. These details subtly connect to the Xingyuan’s original “star wish” inspiration.

Inside, the cabin adopts Proton’s current design direction — clean, minimal, and driver-oriented. The dashboard is built around a 14.6-inch infotainment display running Atlas OS, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with the “Hi e.MAS” voice assistant in Bahasa Malaysia.

It also integrates dedicated EV features, such as a real-time charging map showing nearby charging stations.

Below the screen sits a simple storage tray, tactile air-conditioning controls, and a crystal-effect gear selector, with twin cupholders and a small compartment beside it.

Some features found in the Geely model, like wireless charging and powered front seats, are not included even in the Premium trim. Cabin colour schemes differ according to exterior choice: standard versions get Flint Grey, while the Marble Cream and Quartz Rose variants come with Alabaster White interiors.

The base model comes equipped with halogen headlights, 16-inch steel wheels, manual air-conditioning, manual seat adjustment, rear air vents, and faux leather upholstery.

Moving up to the Premium adds full LED headlights, a black contrast roof, D-pad-inspired alloy wheels, a six-speaker sound system, a 360-degree camera, and a powered tailgate.

Power comes from a rear-mounted electric motor, with two configurations available. The Prime variant delivers 79PS and 130 Nm, powered by a 30.12 kWh LFP battery that offers 225 km of WLTP range. The Premiumincreases output to 116PS and 150 Nm, using a 40.16 kWh battery for 325 km of range. Top speeds are limited to 125 km/h and 135 km/h respectively.

Charging performance is competitive for its class. The Premium variant supports DC fast charging up to 71 kW, enabling a 30–80% charge in 21 minutes, while both models accept 6.6 kW AC charging for convenient overnight replenishment using a home wallbox.

The emas.5 is priced at RM59,800 for the Prime variant and RM72,800 for the Premium variant.

A rebate of RM3,000 is given to buyers from now till end of 2025. Also included is a 6-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty and a 8-year or 160,000km high voltage battery and component warranty.

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has taken the wraps off the Honda 0 α (Alpha) prototype at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, introducing the latest addition to its growing range of next-generation electric vehicles. This new model joins the futuristic Honda 0 lineup as a key entry point for customers into the brand’s new electric era.

Set to be displayed throughout the duration of the show, the Honda 0 α is designed as a compact SUV that seamlessly fits into both urban and natural environments. It continues the design and engineering philosophy first seen in the Honda 0 Saloon and Honda 0 SUV, which were unveiled earlier this year at CES 2025. Unlike those flagship models, the 0 α serves as a “gateway model” — more accessible yet still showcasing the same level of sophistication, innovation, and environmental awareness that define the Honda 0 Series.

The 0 α has been developed under the guiding principles of “Thin, Light, and Wise,” the core philosophy of the Honda 0 Series. These principles focus on maximising efficiency through lightweight engineering, clever design, and advanced technology. Powering the Forester 2.5 is a new 2.5-litre FB25 Boxer engine that puts out 185PS and 247Nm of torque, paired with the upgraded TR58 Lineartronic gearbox. The setup delivers a more responsive drive, with quicker acceleration and improved fuel efficiency.

Complementing this is the new dual-pinion electric power steering system that sharpens handling and provides a sportier, more connected feel. Subaru’s engineers have also refined the braking system for smoother control and overall drivability.

Underneath, the SUV rides on the latest iteration of the Subaru Global Platform, now 10% stiffer thanks to a new full inner-frame structure and greater use of structural adhesives.

These updates help to reduce vibrations and body movement, creating a more stable, composed ride. The suspension tuning further enhances comfort and control, ensuring the Forester feels planted and predictable on any surface.

As expected, Subaru’s renowned Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (SAWD) system remains at the heart of the Forester’s capability, continuously distributing power to the wheels with the best traction. The system works in tandem with dual-function X-MODE for confident off-road performance, while Hill Descent Control makes steep, slippery descents less intimidating.

With 220 mm of ground clearance, the Forester stands ready for anything from city potholes to unpaved terrain. Drivers can also personalise the car’s behaviour with the Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-Drive) system, choosing between the fuel-efficient Intelligent mode or the more performance-focused Sport mode.

Step inside, and the new Forester feels every bit as premium as it is practical. The cabin’s design is minimalist yet inviting, offering generous space and comfort for all passengers. Subaru’s new ergonomic seat design, co-developed with a Japanese medical institution, aims to reduce fatigue even on long drives.

The driver enjoys a 10-way power-adjustable seat with lumbar support, while the rear seats maintain class-leading legroom and flexibility.

At the centre of the dashboard sits a sharp 11.6-inch Full HD infotainment display, which supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A wireless charging pad, multiple USB ports for front and rear passengers, and an easy-to-use interface complete the car’s tech offering.

The practicality extends to the rear, where a kick-sensor hands-free power tailgate and 60:40 split-folding seats make loading bulky items effortless.

Safety, as always with Subaru, is uncompromising. The Forester 2.5 features eight airbags, including a new passenger seat cushion airbag that enhances protection in frontal collisions. The latest version of Subaru’s EyeSight 4.0 system now includes a wide-angle monocular camera, expanding the range of detection for pedestrians and cyclists.

It also integrates advanced driver assistance features such as the Emergency Driving Stop System, which safely halts the car if it detects prolonged driver inactivity, and a new Driver Monitoring System that uses facial recognition to track drowsiness or inattention.

For enhanced visibility and manoeuvrability, the Forester comes equipped with a 360-degree Multi-View Monitor, Reverse Automatic Braking, and Active Torque Vectoring. All of this works seamlessly to create a safer, more confident driving experience.

The new Forester also makes a bold statement in design. Its fresh front fascia, complete with a larger grille and signature C-shaped LED headlights, gives the SUV a commanding road presence. Muscular wheel arches and 18-inch alloy wheels emphasise its rugged capability, while aerodynamic improvements enhance stability and efficiency. The rear design feels more modern, highlighted by an embossed “FORESTER” badge and sleeker LED taillights.

To match its strong visual identity, Subaru has introduced several new colours for the Malaysian market, including River Rock Pearl, Cashmere Gold Opal, and Daybreak Blue Pearl, adding sophistication to its adventurous persona.

The all-new Subaru Forester 2.5i-S EyeSight, part of the Japan Premium Line, is priced from RM221,500 (indicative). Customers can now visit authorised Subaru dealerships across Malaysia for detailed specifications and test drives.

With its refined engineering, advanced technology, and unmistakable Subaru DNA, the new Forester 2.5 doesn’t just aim to move people — it aims to move them confidently, wherever life takes them.

Honda has taken the wraps off its latest creation, the Super-ONE Prototype, at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 — a compact all-electric vehicle that aims to inject excitement back into everyday driving. On display throughout the duration of the event, the Super-ONE signals Honda’s ambition to redefine what a small EV can be: light, responsive, and genuinely fun to drive.

Developed under the concept “e: Dash BOOSTER,” the Super-ONE is designed to offer more than just clean mobility. It embodies Honda’s philosophy of creating vehicles that stir emotion while remaining practical and efficient. The name itself carries meaning — “Super” represents performance that goes beyond convention, while “ONE” reflects Honda’s goal to craft something distinct and uniquely its own.

The Super-ONE’s development centred on combining the environmental benefits of an electric vehicle with the sense of engagement and joy that Honda has long been known for. The company set out to create an EV that stimulates the driver’s senses — sight, sound, and touch — through its handling, performance, and interior experience.

The Honda Prelude is a car of many childhood dreams. It captured our imaginations, adorned our walls in the form of posters and then it disappeared into the history books.

So, when Honda announced it was reviving the icon back in 2023, there was a collective cheer all over.

But the original Prelude was a proper sports car, the new Prelude, well, was something entirely different.

It shared its underpinnings with the 11th generation Honda Civic, and though it has the chassis, suspension components and some oily bits from the Type R, it is powered by the same 2.0-litre engine as the Honda Civic e:HEV (hybrid).

And I am sure that we can all agree that 200hp and 315Nm of torque hardly qualified as a sports car.

So, the big question behind every Honda fan has undeniably been – is there going to be a Honda Prelude Type R?

I was recently at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show as a guest of Honda Malaysia. The company graciously organized a short interview with the Large Project Leader of the Honda Prelude, Tomoyuki Yamagami.

He was the perfect answer to answer that question since he is basically one of the few people who worked on the new sixth-generation Prelude from the ground up.

So, I couldn’t resist to ask – “will there ever be a Honda Prelude Type R” ?

His answer? No comment.

Not a yes, not a no, not even a maybe. A straight out no comment. And now, I can’t help but speculate because car makers will usually give you a straight out no we can’t do that if a model is not in their plans.

There have been some reports about the next generation Civic Type R being powered by a hybrid powertrain and with an automatic transmission rather than a manual. Both of which the Prelude already has. In fact, the Yamagami-san explicitly mentioned that a manual transmission is impossible to plonk into the Prelude. The car is just not designed for it, he said.

In fact, and again, according to Yamagami-san himself, the Prelude already shares suspension components with the Type R and has a quicker steering rack.

So, it may not be as fast as the Type R in its current guise, but the underpinnings are already there.

Which begs the question, will we see a Honda Prelude Type R?

Speculative at the moment, but there is a decent chance that we just might.

The Honda Prelude is confirmed for key markets around the world and judging from the fact that Honda Malaysia has offered every high-performance model since its inception (talking about you Civic Type R FD2R), I will bet that the Honda Prelude to be offered in Malaysia as well.

Just don’t expect it to be cheap.
