Proton Sales

Proton has entered the second half of 2025 on a high note, recording a marked rebound in sales as the Malaysian car market recovered from a sluggish June. The national automaker registered 13,518 units sold in July, a 22.1 per cent increase over the previous month, bringing its year-to-date total to 85,674 units. This performance has secured Proton second place in the national sales rankings.

The company’s market share for July is estimated at 19.2 per cent, with the year-to-date figure standing at 19.3 per cent – an improvement of 0.6 percentage points compared with the full-year share of 18.7 per cent achieved in 2024, a record-breaking year for the Malaysian automotive industry. The Total Industry Volume for July is projected at 70,545 units, representing a 28.7 per cent rise from June and ranking as the second-highest monthly figure for 2025.

The newly launched Proton X50 was a major driver of last month’s growth. Introduced on 24 July, the B-segment SUV saw 999 units delivered in its first week, contributing to a total of 2,068 units for the month – the third time this year the model has surpassed the 2,000-unit mark.

With an updated exterior, enhanced interior, new intelligent features, and a marketing push aimed at younger buyers, the X50 has quickly gained momentum both online and in showrooms. Production is expected to reach 5,000 units by the end of August, with bookings approaching five figures, setting the stage for another strong month ahead.

Proton has concluded the first half of 2025 with a notable increase in its market share, despite challenging market conditions affecting the wider automotive sector. The national carmaker registered 11,069 units in June, a marginal improvement compared to the same period last year, bringing its total year-to-date (YTD) sales to 72,156 units. This positions Proton as the second-best performing automotive brand in terms of volume for the first half of the year.

The company’s market share for June stood at 20.7%, reflecting a 1.1% gain over the previous month and placing it 1.2 percentage points above its YTD average of 19.5%. While the Total Industry Volume (TIV) dipped significantly in June—falling by 21% to an estimated 53,500 units from 68,007 in May—Proton’s sales resilience allowed it to improve its relative standing in the industry.

A key contributor to Proton’s performance continues to be the X50 SUV, which has firmly held its position as the best-selling B-segment SUV since its launch in October 2020. With more than 140,000 units sold domestically and abroad, the X50 remains a cornerstone of Proton’s lineup. In June alone, 1,657 units were delivered, including 353 units for export, representing nearly half of Proton’s total overseas shipments for the month. Cumulatively, 11,361 units of the X50 were sold in the first six months of 2025—an 11.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

Anticipation is building for the launch of the all-new Proton X50, scheduled for July. The upcoming model features updated styling, a revamped interior, the new 1.5-litre i-GT engine, and the advanced ADAS 2.0 safety suite. Pre-launch bookings began on 5 July, accompanied by a promotional campaign and a series of activities leading up to the official reveal.

Proton Holdings Bhd recorded a robust performance in May 2025, with total sales, including domestic, export, smart, and Proton e.MAS vehicles, reaching 13,328 units. This figure represents a 6.1% increase compared to May 2024, and marks the third consecutive month of sales growth for the national carmaker.

Between March and May, Proton experienced a year-on-year growth of 10%, pushing year-to-date (YTD) sales to 61,087 units. Market share for the month is projected at 19.2%, with the same percentage forecasted for the YTD share, based on an estimated Total Industry Volume (TIV) of 69,495 units.

Across Proton’s model range, May emerged as the second-best sales month in 2025, bolstered by nationwide promotional campaigns that stimulated consumer interest. The Proton X70 recorded the highest growth rate among individual models, with sales increasing by 44% to 982 units. This placed the C-segment SUV 53.1% ahead of its YTD sales from the previous year, a trend Proton expects to sustain throughout the remainder of 2025.

Proton’s sales performance in April 2025 marked a significant milestone for the national carmaker, securing a 14.7% year-on-year increase and reinforcing its hold on second place in Malaysia’s automotive sales rankings. Despite the traditionally slower sales period during festive seasons, Proton delivered 12,692 units across its domestic, export, smart and e.MAS portfolios. The company’s estimated market share now stands at 20.8%, outperforming the modest 1.8% growth of the Total Industry Volume (TIV), which reached 60,886 units for the month.

This uptrend not only highlights Proton’s resilience in a highly competitive market saturated with new players and aggressive pricing strategies, but also underscores the company’s ability to maintain customer confidence and brand relevance.

A standout achievement for the brand came from the all-electric Proton e.MAS 7, which has continued its upward trajectory since its launch in mid-December 2024. In April alone, the model recorded 863 units in combined domestic and export sales, raising its year-to-date tally to 2,716 units. This figure positions it as the best-selling electric vehicle in Malaysia and elevates the e.MAS sub-brand to second place in national EV sales, despite offering only a single model. As a result, EVs now represent 6% of Proton’s overall sales, reflecting growing public acceptance of the brand’s electrification direction.

Among internal combustion engine (ICE) offerings, the Proton X50 saw its strongest sales month of the year, reclaiming the lead in the B-segment SUV category with 2,389 units sold. Year-to-date, its sales have reached 7,506 units, surpassing its 2024 performance by 420 units.

The figures position Proton’s estimated market share at 19.4%, based on a Total Industry Volume (TIV) of 71,596 units for March.

Over the course of the first three months of 2025, Proton recorded total sales of 35,068 units, securing a market share of 18.9% against a TIV of 184,652 units. Leading this charge is the Proton e.MAS 7, which has quickly become Malaysia’s top-selling electric vehicle within its first quarter on the market.

The brand’s internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles also delivered encouraging results. The model’s strong showing reflects its appeal to a broad consumer base, combining sporty design, refined performance, and a spacious, technology-laden interior suited for both individuals and families.

The larger X90, Proton’s flagship D-segment SUV, maintained its dominance in its segment with a 73.6% increase in sales over February, delivering 302 units in March and pushing its YTD figure to 679 units. Following a record-breaking year in 2024 with Total Industry Volume (TIV) reaching 813,521 units, the Malaysian automotive market experienced a downturn in January 2025. The decline was attributed to high sales in December 2024 and the impact of the Chinese New Year festive period. An estimated 50,278 vehicles were sold in January 2025, marking a 38.7% drop from the 81,987 units sold in December 2024 and a 24.9% decline from the 66,925 units recorded in January 2024.

Proton Reports Market Share Growth Despite Industry Slowdown

Amid the overall decline, Proton’s total sales for January 2025—including domestic, export, Proton e.MAS, and smart car models—stood at 9,914 units. The company credited the performance to strong sales of the Proton e.MAS 7, a surge in exports, and three Proton models leading their respective segments.
