Volvo’s First Electric Minivan Teased Ahead Of Official Debut

A teaser for Volvo’s first fully electric MPV, the EM90, has been released ahead of its official debut on November 12, 2023, in China.

There are currently few details available about the EM90, but Volvo claims it offers a mobile Scandinavian living room experience intended to maximize time spent in the car. The EM90 provides a space that perfectly fits into your lifestyle, according to the firm, emphasizing that it is more than just a mode of transportation.

According to sources, the EM90 will resemble the Zeekr 009, which is built on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) and features distinctive Volvo design cues. The teaser image displays the recognizable “Thor’s Hammer” LED daytime running lights, dual sunroofs, and T-shaped taillights.

The interior features second-row individual chairs, and the dashboard has a central speaker evocative of the Bowers & Wilkins sound systems found in contemporary Volvo cars.

Volvo has confirmed that the EM90 is indeed an electric vehicle, but specifics on its technical details remain undisclosed. While not officially confirmed, reports suggest that the EM90 shares a close relationship with the Zeekr 009 beneath its exterior design. It is speculated to utilize a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup with an estimated power output of around 544hp. The vehicle is expected to provide an approximate driving range of 804 km, courtesy of a substantial 140-kilowatt-hour battery pack.

Geely, the parent company of Volvo, established the Zeekr brand in 2021, making the idea of reimagining one of its models as the EM90 quite feasible. Leveraging economies of scale by sharing platforms among differently designed vehicles has become a Geely strength. Notably, Polestar’s upcoming 4 shares its platform with the Zeekr 009, and Volvo and Smart also utilize the same basic architecture for the EX30 and the #1, respectively.

Volvo’s official unveiling of the EM90 is scheduled for November 12, 2023. The company has promised to unveil “a lot more details” about the minivan in the months leading up to its introduction. While sales will commence in China shortly after the debut, there is currently no indication of a Volvo-branded minivan arriving in the Malaysian market yet.
