After its world premiere at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®, the new special series Ferrari 488 Pista Spider has made its European debut at the Paris Motor Show. The 50th drop-top model to be introduced by the Prancing Horse is also the most powerful series production spider in Ferrari history, with an unprecedented weight/power ratio of 1.92 kg/cv.

The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider combines the finest race-developed technological solutions with the joy of en plein air driving to deliver an exhilarating experience behind the wheel. The driver feels absolutely as one with the car in a symbiotic relationship that guarantees instantaneous responsiveness to commands and absolute control when executing even the most complex manoeuvres. This is hardly surprising as the Ferrari 488 Pista Spider benefits from the greatest technological transfer from the track of any road-legal open-top car.

The model’s engine, dynamics and aerodynamics are derived from two track cars: the   488 Challenge and the 488 GTE. The latter won the GT class of the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2017, thus giving Ferrari a total of five GT Manufacturers’ titles since the championship’s inception in 2012. Furthermore, this model has very clearly benefited from the extensive development work done to produce the coupé version, the 488 Pista.

The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider sports the most powerful V8 engine in Maranello history which was also named Best Engine for the third consecutive year at the 2018 International Engine of the Year Awards. The 3902cc twin-turbo V8 unleashes 720 cv (50 cv more than the 488 Spider) with torque calibrated to deliver a feeling of constant, ever-increasing acceleration. The engine also won the special “Best of the Best” title as the top engine of all the winners of the last 20 years.

Its performance figures are the highest of any spider ever built by the Prancing Horse, including 0-100 km/h acceleration in 2.85 seconds and a lap time at Fiorano of just 1’21’’5. The 488 Pista Spider’s target client is a typical diehard Ferrarista who already owns other Ferrari spiders. These are drivers that want to feel all the power and speed the 488 Pista Spider is capable of yet also enjoy drop-top driving and the soundtrack of that unparalleled engine.

But the innovations are not confined merely to a boost in power output – they also extend to an overall reduction in weight and beyond. In fact, the Ferrari 488 Pista Spider delivers even better handling, making it one of the most enthralling models Ferrari has ever produced, thanks also to multiple innovations in various different areas.

The Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 are the forerunners in a new concept, known as ‘Icona’ (Icon), that taps into a leitmotif of the most evocative cars in the company’s history to create a new segment of special limited series cars for clients and collectors. The intention is to use a modern aesthetic to reinterpret a timeless style, with technologically advanced components and the highest performance possible through continuous innovation.

The Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 are inspired by barchettas of the 1950s which were driven to victory in international motor sport not just by official works team drivers from the Scuderia, but also by a legion of gentlemen drivers who, in those years, frequently found themselves wheel to wheel with legendary professional drivers of the era.

The first ever Ferrari to be referred to as a barchetta was the open-top version of the 1948 166 MM. The name was coined by Giovanni Agnelli who, upon seeing the car for the first time at the Turin Motor Show that year, commented that it was less like a car and more like a barchetta, referring to the Italian for a small speed boat. The Touring-bodied 166 MM barchetta wrote Ferrari’s name firmly in the history books, winning first the Mille Miglia and then the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1949. This model was followed by other extraordinarily successful Ferrari Sports cars, such as the 750 Monza and 860 Monza which were inspiration for the name of the new models.

Barchettas were similar to spiders in form (two seaters), but had no roof or weather equipment. Instead of a full windscreen, they were equipped with just a small screen (single or wrap-around) and a removable tonneau cover over the passenger side. The Monza SP1 and SP2 are similar in concept, although the main difference is that they can be ordered either as a single-seater or as a two-seater. The result is a car that seems sculpted by the wind. It is the purity of the styling elements that impresses – an aesthetic that is futuristic but, at the same time, a respectful yet un-nostalgic homage to the past.

Enzo Ferrari used to say that “If there is such a thing as a soul, engines have one”. This model’s soul is, as is true of all Ferraris, in its engine. The Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 are equipped with the most powerful naturally-aspirated V12 ever produced by Ferrari. Thanks to specific areas of development, the power of the 812 Superfast’s 6.5 litre has been increased by 10 cv to 810 cv at 8500 rpm with a slight increase in torque to 719 Nm at 7000 rpm.

Just like on racing cars, extensive use of carbon-fibre has been made throughout the construction of the Monza SP1 and SP2 to make them light and responsive and to enhance their sporty, aggressive visual appeal. As these are completely en plein air sports cars with no windscreen, one of the biggest challenges was to create an aerodynamic solution that would ensure the driver enjoys the performance of the cars without being affected by issues caused by the barchetta configuration. The result was the patented “Virtual Wind Shield” which is integrated into the fairing ahead of the instrument panel and the steering wheel, providing exceptional driving comfort.

ENGINE

In terms of its characteristics and performance, the 488 Pista Spider’s engine sets the benchmark not just for new generation turbo engines but all engines, including naturally aspirated ones.  This is why it was voted “Engine of the Year” for three years running: 2016, 2017 and 2018. It is also the most powerful V8 ever sported by a road-going Ferrari in terms of both its overall and specific power outputs. It also delivers the highest power increase over the model it was developed from, the 488 Spider.

It here! The new 2018 Jaguar F-TYPE has arrived. Boasting a new design for its headlights, rear lights and bumper, the F-Type’s existing contemporary design matches the pure performance of this 2.0L turbocharged Coupé even more now. Since it was launched in 2012, the F-Type, Jaguar’s all-aluminium two-seater, has firmly established itself as the most desirable sports car in its segment and has won more than 170 awards worldwide. The unrivalled balance of a seductive design, stunning performance and outstanding dynamics has always made the F-TYPE unique, in a range that has evolved to include Coupé body styles, manual transmissions, intelligent all-wheel drive and now a powerful four-cylinder.

The F-TYPE Coupé, embodies the uncompromised design vision of the stunning Jaguar C-X16 concept sports Coupé, which debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Jaguar’s expertise in aluminium technology has enabled the design vision for the F-TYPE Coupé to be delivered in a lightweight yet extremely strong bodyshell. The Jaguar F-TYPE Coupé is the ideal performance sports car due to its breadth of capabilities to suit the demands of the road and the driver. It is also the latest in its category to deliver both performance and innovative car technology.

Its new 300PS 2.0-litre turbocharged Ingenium engine carries with it Jaguar’s sports car DNA with enhanced agility as well as improved efficiency and affordability. This model retains the performance expected from an F-TYPE, and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in only 5.7 seconds and achieve a top speed of 250km/h. The engine’s high maximum torque of 400Nm is generated from just 1,500rpm.

The latest version introduces new futuristic LED headlights and rear lights as part of the improved exterior aesthetics of the F-TYPE. The new headlights from the optional LEDs has a colour temperature of 5,500-6,000K, which is close to daylight resulting in better visibility for night driving and adds on to the styling of the car. With three different beam pattern modes to choose from (i.e: city, highway and bad weather), the driver can choose a mode that suits the driving environment. A redesigned bumper, a new single exhaust tailpipe finisher and new 18” wheels also gives the F-TYPE a redefined look, adding more masculinity to the car’s personality.  The introduction of the new Silicon Silver exterior colour also emphasises the character lines further and exudes the boldness of the F-TYPE.

Entering the Coupé, one will notice significant enhancements, aimed at making the car feel even more luxurious than before. Lightweight slim-lined seats and new chrome and aluminium trim finishers heighten the driver-focused feel of the interior and perfectly complement the enhanced interior colour schemes which includes the Siena Tan leather option now available across the range. The seat frames are pressure die cast magnesium alloy – a material that has a high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent formability, allowing for the ergonomic form of Jaguar’s innovative seat design. Weight savings for the Coupé as compared to its predecessors are more than 8kg.

Every F-TYPE now features the Touch Pro infotainment system with a 10-inch touchscreen. Its super-fast responses, intuitive tablet-style operation, intelligent navigation functions such as Share ETA and online services such as real-time traffic and live weather reports make every journey more rewarding and put a world of information at the driver’s fingertips. Touch Pro, the most advanced infotainment system to be offered by Jaguar comes standard for the entire F-TYPE range. Designed and developed around state-of-the-art technologies including a powerful quad-core processor, high-speed 60GB Solid-State Drive (SSD) and an ultra-fast Ethernet network, Touch Pro delivers a world-class performance and functionality as well as an outstanding user experience. The 2018 F-TYPE 2.0L Ingenium retails at RM575,800 (excluding road tax, registration and insurance) and is now available at all Jaguar showrooms nationwide.

Don’t even bother to ask how much this costs, because all 77 units are likely sold by the time you read this. Porsche has unveiled the new 935 on the occasion of the historic “Rennsport Reunion” motorsport event at Laguna Seca Raceway in California. The 515 kW (700 hp) racer featuring a body reminiscent of the legendary Porsche 935/78 will be produced in a limited number of 77 units. “This spectacular car is a birthday present from Porsche Motorsport to fans all over the world,” says Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser, Vice President Motorsport and GT Cars. “Because the car isn’t homologated, engineers and designers didn’t have to follow the usual rules and thus had freedom in the development.”

The race car’s technology for clubsport events and private training on racetracks is based on the 911 GT2 RS high-performance sports car. Like its historic predecessor, most of the body has been replaced or supplemented by carbon-fibre composite parts (CFRP). With its streamlined extended rear, the 935 reaches a length of 4.87 metres. The width of the exclusive clubsport racer measures 2.03 metres.

The spectacular aerodynamics is a completely new development and pays tribute to the Porsche 935/78 Le Mans race car, which fans dubbed “Moby Dick” due to its elongated shape, massive fairings and white base colour. The distinctive wheel arch air vents on the front fairings, which also feature on the GT3 Porsche 911 GT3 R customer vehicle, increase downforce at the front axle. Measuring 1,909 millimetres in width by 400 millimetres in depth, the rear wing lends aerodynamic balance.

Many details of the exterior are a salute to winning vehicles from the company’s motor racing history: The aerodynamically capped rims echo those of the 935/78, with the LED rear lights on the rear wing endplates adopted from the 919 Hybrid LMP1 race car. The side mirrors hail from the current Le Mans-winning 911 RSR, with the exposed titanium tailpipes modelled on the Porsche 908 from 1968.

These references are carried through to the cockpit. The knob on the gearshift lever has a laminated wood design and is reminiscent of racers such as the 917, the 909 Bergspyder and the Carrera GT super sports car. The carbon steering wheel and the colour display behind it have been taken from the 911 GT3 R from the 2019 model year. A massive safety cage combined with a racing bucket seat and a six-point safety harness ensure maximum safety. A second seat for the passenger is available as an optional extra. Air conditioning provides optimal cooling of the interior.

The new 935 is powered by a state-of-the-art 3.8-litre six-cylinder twin-turbo engine, which is largely identical to the high-performance standard unit mounted in the road-legal 911 GT2 RS. Power is transferred to the rear engine via a seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) with rigid gearbox suspension at the 310-millimetre-wide rear axle. Like in the GT road models of the 911, the driver changes gears via conveniently positioned shift paddles on the steering wheel. Typical of the 911, the weight distribution ensures excellent traction and braking performances. Six-piston aluminium monobloc racing callipers on the front axle in combination with internally ventilated and grooved steel brake discs with a 390-millimeter diameter provide excellent deceleration values at the front axle. The rear axle is fitted with four-piston callipers and 355-millimeter discs.

Like the road-legal 911 GT2 RS, the 1,380-kilogram 935 is equipped with PSM (Porsche Stability Management) including traction control as well as an anti-lock braking system (ABS). Thanks to the map switch, these assistance systems can be adjusted separately or switched off completely, depending on the driving situation. Full specifications after the gallery and video below…

A Trip Down Memory Lane With Mitsubishi…

It’s 1978, and the world is changing. Space Invaders spreads to arcades across the globe and launches the video game industry. The first automated cellular phone network is being built in Japan and Superman takes off in cinemas. Another product is launched which, over the next four decades, will bring mobility to 4.7 million people – the Mitsubishi 1-ton pickup.

It’s a pickup truck that can handle all types of roads, anywhere on the planet. It has been developed with a design brief – to meet the desire of customers for a pickup with outstanding reliability, durability and payload performance; with levels of drivability, utility, comfort and ride that are on a par with a passenger sedan. The first models were appropriately named FORTE, although exports used other badges such as L200, which remain in use today. From the very beginning, the FORTE was engineered to provide tough, dependable transport for people and goods.

The FORTE was developed to provide a 1-ton carrying capacity and yet be as easy to drive, have a combination of rugged reliability, easy-to-drive nature and impressive carrying capacity. This soon made it a firm favorite across the world, from frozen wastes to sun-baked deserts. To ensure customers could go even further afield, Mitsubishi Motors built on its four-wheel-drive heritage by adding a 4×4 version to the range in 1980. This became the foundation for modern Mitsubishi 4WD vehicles, leading directly to the PAJERO/MONTERO and DELICA.

The pickup, soon renamed TRITON in many markets, had a profound effect on the Mitsubishi Motors’ business too. The first and second generation platforms were mainly produced at Mitsubishi Motors Ohe Plant. Since the third-generation model in 1995, production has been concentrated in the Laem Chabang Plant in Thailand, from where they are exported worldwide. It is now Mitsubishi Motors’ biggest factory, producing about 400,000 vehicles.

Here is a reminder of the previous generations of the FORTE, TRITON and L200 – and a glimpse at what the near future might hold…

And the future of the pickup will soon be revealed…

In Detail: 1st Generation 1978 FORTE/L200…

There is a huge overseas demand, particularly in North America, for small pickup trucks, where they are used casually for commuting to school and work, as well as for recreation. Mitsubishi Motors introduced its first 1-ton pickup truck with the name FORTE in September 1978, and began to export to North America from the following October. The name for the 1-ton pickup truck “FORTE” means “strong” in Italian. The prototypes underwent rigorous endurance testing on a massive scale in North America, Thailand, and Saudi Arabia to ensure reliability. A total of approximately 657,000 vehicles were produced in the Ohe Plant in Japan, and partially in the Laem Chabang Plant in Thailand.

The styling took its cues from the compact sedan GALANT Σ, with a long nose, an air-dam skirt which was introduced for trucks for the first time, and four round headlights. The FORTE was powered by a 2.0-litre and 2.6-litre petrol engines for North America and 1.6-litre petrol engine for Japan and other regions. A 2.3-litre diesel engine was available for general exports. Its wide 1,360mm front track and long wheelbase of 2,780mm ensured superior driving stability.

The chassis was sophisticated for a commercial vehicle too, with front disc brakes, double wishbone/coil springs for the front suspension, and leaf springs and rigid axle in the rear. The very quiet interior results from an uncompromising approach to NVH performance, which includes the use of a 2-piece prop shaft and the generous use of strategically-placed sealing materials. Mitsubishi Motors leveraged its many years of experience of building Jeeps, and added a newly-developed part-time 4WD transfer system with a directly-linked silent chain. This system reduced gear noise and power loss, and enabled high-speed on-road driving. This model served as the forerunner for Mitsubishi Motors’ 4WD lineup such as the PAJERO/MONTERO and the DELICA.

In Detail: 2nd Generation 1986 STRADA/L200…

There was a full model change in March 1986. The exterior sports a classy makeover with a new front grille design, among other detail changes. And the lines create a shape that looks as tough and modern as it is aero-efficient. A wider variety of configurations were offered, including three body types: Single Cab, Club Cab, Double Cab, short and long body style available for Single Cab, 2WD and 4WD drivetrain options, 2.0-litre and 2.6-litre gasoline engines, and 2.5-litre diesel engine.

The naming changed too, with double-cab STRADA being introduced in Japan in 1991. The model was also called MIGHTY MAX in North America, TRITON in Australia, and L200 in other areas. In North America, it was also sold by Dodge as the RAM 50. A total of approximately 1,146,000 2nd generation models were produced in the Ohe Plant in Japan, and the Laem Chabang Plant in Thailand.

In Detail: 3rd Generation 1995 STRADA/L200…

Production of the third generation STRADA/L200 began in November 1995 in Thailand. The interior and exterior designs were fully revised to give a distinctive and cutting-edge look. The new style reflected the customer need to have a pickup truck which could also be used as a passenger car for personal use. The model was positioned as a roomy five seater that was comfortable and capable enough for both recreational and commercial uses.

Power and off-road performance were improved with a 2.5-litre intercooled turbodiesel engine and features such as “Easy Select 4WD.” Safety and equipment levels were also enhanced to match the expectations of buyers used to passenger car levels of comfort. The STRADA/L200 was sold in Thailand and also exported to Europe, Oceania, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. A total of approximately 1,046,000 vehicles were produced.

It featured:

  • A fresh new look that combines the toughness of a pickup truck with the style of a passenger car
  • An interior with a passenger car feel, featuring molded door trimmings and oversized padding for comfort
  • A roomy cargo area that is among the largest in its class
  • The 2.5-litre turbodiesel intercooled engine with better drivability
  • Enhanced passive and active safety features such as driver-side airbag, anti-pinch power windows, and high level brake lights
  • Mitsubishi Motors “Easy Select 4WD” system was adopted, with its synchronized free-wheel front differential that allows the driver to choose the most efficient drive mode for any road surface.
  • Available on some trim levels are: Mitsubishi Motors ABS, which prevents the wheels from locking up during braking to stabilize body attitude and handling; and a hybrid limited slip differential (LSD) that enhances driving stability

In Detail: 4th Generation 2005 TRITON/L200…

In August 2005 there is full model change and after its introduction in Thailand in 2005 it was exported in stages to approximately 150 countries worldwide, becoming an important model in Mitsubishi Motors’ global strategy. The TRITON/L200 was developed with the following three key features to help it conquer the world. First, it had to exceed the basic performance requirements of pickup trucks such as economy, durability, and reliability. Second, it had to have the highest quality standards to further strengthen the brand on a global scale. And lastly, it had to meet a wide variety of customer needs, not just be a commercial use vehicle.

A total of 1,423,000 4th generation TRITON/L200 were produced. Characteristic features of the 2005 TRITON/L200 include an innovative interior and exterior design which suggests sportiness while also being stylish. The packaging gives the roomiest interior in its class, while the suspension and interior equipment enable ride comfort to rival passenger cars. These elements not only highlighted the innovativeness of the TRITON/L200 in the marketplace, but dispelled the general image of pickup trucks as merely commercial vehicles. This greatly expanded the customer base of Mitsubishi Motors’ pickup trucks.

A newly developed diesel engine with a direct injection common rail produced high power while achieving low fuel consumption, exhaust emissions, and noise levels. The newly designed body also achieved the highest level of crashworthiness in its class. Participation in the Dakar Rally and other races built up its superior off-road 4WD performance and helped tell the world about the TRITON/L200‘s toughness.

  • Body configurations include three types: Single Cab, Club Cab, and Double Cab.
  • Engines include newly developed 2.5-litre and 3.2-litre common rail diesel engines.
  • Drivetrains are 2WD and 4WD (“Super Select 4WD” and “Easy Select 4WD”).

In Detail: 5th Generation 2014 TRITON/L200…

In 2014, the new 5th generation TRITON/L200 further refines the concept to meet with the increasingly varying needs of customers. Improved usability and durability for commercial use, a sporty feel that is both easy and fun to drive, quality that gives customer satisfaction, and comfort for every passenger are all qualities that the new TRITON/L200 has realized, evolving into the “ultimate sports utility truck.”

Three cabin types are offered to meet each purpose: Single Cab, Double Cab, and double door Club Cab. The 2.5-litre turbodiesel and 2.4-litre gasoline engines have been improved and are offered alongside a newly-developed 2.4-litre MIVEC “clean” turbodiesel. It delivers superior performance while achieving top-level fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. A 6-speed manual and 5-speed automatic transmission with sports mode are also offered for the first time.

The 4WD systems continue to develop too. The “Easy Select 4WD” system has three positions: 2H, 4H, 4L to provide optimum traction to match road conditions, and the “Super Select 4WD-II,” with an electronic actuator. A 2WD option is still offered, including the standard version and a “High Rider” model which has the same ground clearance as the 4WD for improved rough-road performance.

The Future… Stay tuned!

EFKON Asia Sdn Bhd, the Austrian technology provider of the Infra-Red Toll Collection System on Malaysian highways, has assured the more than four million users in the country that the company will continue to provide sales and service support for the system popularly known as SmartTAG. Touch ‘n Go Sdn Bhd had recently announced that it would stop selling SmartTAG devices through its channels.

By October 2018, EFKON Asia plans to have in place a nationwide sales and service network to ensure wider availability and convenience to highway users who wish to purchase or service the Infra-Red TAG device. Moving forward, the Infra-Red TAG device will be available under various brands which will be fully compatible with the current Malaysian toll system.  MaxTAG by Sigma Technology Sdn Bhd is already on sale on the e-commerce platform, www.lazada.com.myIn a firm endorsement of the device’s effectiveness, EFKON’s product has been incorporated as a built-in device in several new car models by major automotive manufacturers in the country at a rate of hundreds of thousands of units a year. The TAG, which is manufactured in Malaysia, is also exported to Vietnam and Indonesia with a fast-expanding user community.

Developed in 1997 and rolled out across the country in 2005, the Infra-Red Toll Collection System developed by local companies together with EFKON has proven to be the most reliable and efficient system in facilitating traffic flow on Malaysian highways. According to EFKON Asia director Helmuth Blasch, the company’s Infra-Red Toll Collection System is also ready and suited for multi-lane traffic free flow.

“In Germany, a similar Infra-Red System has proven to be effective and reliable in multi-lane traffic free flow environment for speeds above 120 km/h. We have also successfully replicated this test in Malaysia. In contrast to simple solutions, the Infra-Red DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range Communication) System also provides high security and protection from cloning the TAG for misuse. We are confident that this Infra-Red TAG System with its 13-year track record and more than four million satisfied customers in this country, will continue to prove its worth as an efficient, convenient and cost-effective cashless toll collection system,” he said.
