The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has initiated a safety recall involving vehicles manufactured by Kia and Mercedes-Benz due to potential structural, equipment, or system defects that may pose safety risks. The recall aims to ensure affected vehicles undergo inspection and necessary corrective action to prevent possible accidents.

According to a statement issued by JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, the bulk of the vehicles affected consist of 5,123 units of the Kia Rio UB model produced between 2010 and 2017. These vehicles are suspected of facing an electrical short circuit issue within the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) circuit board, which could potentially lead to a fire.

In addition, 32 units of Mercedes-Benz models manufactured between 2023 and 2025 are also included in the recall. The affected models include the S 580 e, GLC 300 4MATIC, EQS 500, AMG SL 43, EQE 53, and EQS 53. These vehicles are being recalled due to improperly installed fuse boxes, which could compromise vehicle safety and reliability.

Puspakom has issued a stern warning to vehicle runners and window tint film companies over the circulation of misleading information regarding its role in vehicle inspections, especially concerning window tint compliance. This move follows the discovery of warranty cards issued by a well-known tint film manufacturer, which asserted that their products were “JPJ-compliant” but “not Puspakom-compliant” – a claim the agency has firmly refuted.

According to FMT, the Chief Executive Officer of Puspakom, Mahmood Razak Bahman, denounced these assertions as both unfounded and deceptive. He clarified that Puspakom does not set independent standards for tint compliance and merely applies the specifications established by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) during its inspection processes.

Mahmood stated unequivocally that there is no such thing as a “Puspakom standard” for window tinting, and any implication to the contrary is a misrepresentation of the agency’s role. He further condemned the misuse of Puspakom’s name by industry players seeking to justify failed inspections or claim the existence of dual standards.

In many cases where vehicles fail tint inspections, the cause lies in the overall visible light transmission (VLT) values not meeting JPJ’s prescribed thresholds. Mahmood explained that this is often due to the factory-fitted tinted glass present in some vehicles. While a tint film might technically comply with JPJ guidelines when applied to clear glass, it may still result in a failed inspection if used in combination with windows that are already tinted by the manufacturer.

Proton has concluded the first half of 2025 with a notable increase in its market share, despite challenging market conditions affecting the wider automotive sector. The national carmaker registered 11,069 units in June, a marginal improvement compared to the same period last year, bringing its total year-to-date (YTD) sales to 72,156 units. This positions Proton as the second-best performing automotive brand in terms of volume for the first half of the year.

The company’s market share for June stood at 20.7%, reflecting a 1.1% gain over the previous month and placing it 1.2 percentage points above its YTD average of 19.5%. While the Total Industry Volume (TIV) dipped significantly in June—falling by 21% to an estimated 53,500 units from 68,007 in May—Proton’s sales resilience allowed it to improve its relative standing in the industry.

A key contributor to Proton’s performance continues to be the X50 SUV, which has firmly held its position as the best-selling B-segment SUV since its launch in October 2020. With more than 140,000 units sold domestically and abroad, the X50 remains a cornerstone of Proton’s lineup. In June alone, 1,657 units were delivered, including 353 units for export, representing nearly half of Proton’s total overseas shipments for the month. Cumulatively, 11,361 units of the X50 were sold in the first six months of 2025—an 11.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

Anticipation is building for the launch of the all-new Proton X50, scheduled for July. The upcoming model features updated styling, a revamped interior, the new 1.5-litre i-GT engine, and the advanced ADAS 2.0 safety suite. Pre-launch bookings began on 5 July, accompanied by a promotional campaign and a series of activities leading up to the official reveal.

Hyundai Motor Malaysia has officially launched the all-new Hyundai Santa Fe, following a preview last month. The latest iteration of the brand’s D/E-segment SUV makes a commanding entrance with a striking, boxy silhouette and a host of modern enhancements, underscoring Hyundai’s ambition to redefine the premium SUV experience for Malaysian drivers.

The Santa Fe’s redesigned exterior introduces a more upright and muscular profile. A wide stance, high-set bonnet and flared fenders lend it a rugged appeal, while sophisticated design elements such as the dark chrome-finished grille, a hidden rear wiper, and the signature H-shaped LED lighting give it a futuristic edge. The SUV’s bold styling is matched by a practical mindset, as seen in the new wider tailgate opening that simplifies loading and unloading—an advantage well-suited for families and adventure-seekers alike.

Hyundai has tailored the Santa Fe’s powertrain offerings to appeal to a wide spectrum of drivers, launching three distinct variants in the local market. The Prime and Prestige trims feature hybrid powertrains built around a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and driving the front wheels, these variants generate 235PS at 5,500 rpm and 367Nm of torque between 1,000 and 4,000 rpm. This setup delivers a balanced blend of efficiency and performance, making it ideal for daily commutes and long-distance travel.

At the top of the range is the Calligraphy variant, which takes performance up a notch with a 2.5-litre turbocharged engine. Producing 281PS at 5,800 rpm and 422Nm of torque from 1,700 to 4,000 rpm, it offers a more dynamic driving experience. This variant comes equipped with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission and features all-wheel drive as standard. Designed as a 6-seater configuration, the Calligraphy model combines athletic performance with an added layer of comfort and luxury, aimed at discerning buyers who prioritise refinement alongside capability.

In terms of size, the new Santa Fe is designed to command attention on the road while providing generous interior space. Measuring 4,830 mm in length and 1,900 mm in width, it sits on a 2,815 mm wheelbase. While the Prime and Prestige variants stand at 1,770 mm in height, the Calligraphy reaches a slightly taller 1,780 mm. Despite its sizeable proportions, the new Santa Fe remains more compact than some of its key rivals, such as the Ford Everest Wildtrak, making it easier to manoeuvre in urban settings while retaining a strong visual presence.

At the heart of the cabin is a panoramic curved display that seamlessly integrates a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with the infotainment system, delivering a modern and intuitive user experience.

The H-shaped dashboard and air vent design enhance the sense of openness while providing a distinctive visual symmetry. In a segment-first move, the Santa Fe introduces a UV-C sanitiser tray, ensuring everyday hygiene and added peace of mind. It is also the first Hyundai model to feature a dual wireless charging system, offering enhanced convenience for front-seat occupants.

The bilateral multi-console design allows easy access to storage from both the front and rear, adding to overall cabin practicality. The SUV is offered in both 6- and 7-seater configurations, with the second-row Fold & Dive function enabling flexible use of interior space. For added comfort, the 6-seater Calligraphy variant includes a second-row relaxation mode, designed to elevate long-distance travel.

Premium finishes, ambient lighting, and improved cargo accessibility through a widened tailgate complete the Santa Fe’s thoughtfully designed and upscale interior.

For the pricing, the HEV Prime variant is priced at RM225,000, the HEV Prestige at RM245,000 and the 2.5T Calligraphy at RM270,000.

For all customers, the SUV comes with an eight-year, 160,000km vehicle warranty. Exclusive for the first 100 customers is an eight-time free service for parts and labour.

Hyundai Motor Malaysia has officially launched the refreshed Hyundai Staria, showcasing a distinctive evolution in the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) segment. Following a brief preview last month, the new Staria has now made its full debut, combining futuristic aesthetics with refined practicality for both families and group travellers.

A bold departure from conventional MPVs, the Staria’s design draws immediate attention with its sleek, space-age silhouette. The fluid lines and minimalist front profile project a modern presence on the road, while its practicality remains central to the vehicle’s appeal. Offered in both 7- and 10-seater configurations, the latest model is tailored for a wide range of uses—from long-distance family drives to corporate or leisure transport—without compromising passenger comfort.

Powering all variants is a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, which produces 177PS at 3,800 rpm. For most variants, peak torque stands at 430Nm between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. However, the hybrid Prestige model features a slightly altered performance curve, offering 367Nm between 1,000 and 4,000 rpm. Each Staria is equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission sending power to the front wheels, while a 75-litre fuel tank provides the range needed for extended journeys.

The top-tier Prestige variant takes the Staria’s premium appeal to the next level. The 7-seater version is equipped with a dual sunroof and distinctive brass chrome accents that lend a touch of luxury to its streamlined profile. Exterior highlights across the Prestige range include full LED projector headlamps, LED rear lighting, and 18-inch machine-finished alloy wheels, which are standard on both the 7- and 10-seater models.

Inside the Prestige 7-seater, comfort is prioritised with power-adjustable premium relaxation seats complete with extendable leg rests, providing a business-class-like experience on the move. A 12-speaker Bose sound system offers high-fidelity audio, while an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit and automatic climate control ensure connectivity and convenience for all occupants. Boot space measures a practical 431 litres in the 7-seater variant, underscoring the vehicle’s usability for larger loads.

Safety has been significantly reinforced with the inclusion of Hyundai’s SmartSense suite across the Prime and Prestige variants. Among the notable features is Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, which detects not only vehicles but also pedestrians and cyclists, including during left-turn manoeuvres at junctions. Driver Attention Alert with Leading Vehicle Departure Alert helps ensure driver focus, especially in stop-and-go traffic. Additional assistance systems include Blind-Spot Collision Warning, Safe Exit Assist to prevent accidents when passengers open doors, and Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go functionality.

Further enhancements available in the Prestige trims include Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Following Assist, and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, all designed to bolster the driver’s awareness and responsiveness. The Blind-Spot View Monitor and Surround View Monitor provide comprehensive visual coverage of the vehicle’s surroundings, crucial for navigating tight urban spaces. A tyre pressure monitoring system adds another layer of precaution, contributing to both safety and efficiency.

The Staria 10 Seater (10s) Style is priced at RM179,888, the 10s Prime at RM196,888, the 10s Prestige at RM209,888 and the 7 Seater Prestige at RM267,888.

For all customers, the MPV comes with an eight-year, 160,000km vehicle warranty. Exclusive for the first 100 customers is an eight-time free service for parts and labour.
