Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport is making a significant leap into digitalisation by moving vehicle licenses and registration documents from traditional physical cards to a fully digital platform. During a podcast with Cilisos, Transport Minister Anthony Loke highlighted that the initiative forms part of a wider plan to modernise public services, enhance efficiency, and substantially reduce government spending.

Currently, printing physical licenses and related documents costs the government over RM100 million annually. By introducing a digital system, the government expects to save this amount while still offering drivers the option to obtain a physical card for a fee of RM10 to RM16. Loke emphasised that not every driver requires a physical license, and moving online will streamline administrative processes, cut costs, and resolve common printing issues.

With around 15 to 16 million active drivers in Malaysia, the transition represents a major logistical effort. The Ministry acknowledges that there may be minor challenges or complaints during the early stages of the rollout, but the long-term benefits—including financial savings and improved service delivery—are expected to outweigh any temporary disruptions.

The Kuala Lumpur Road Transport Department (RTD) has intensified its enforcement against overloaded commercial vehicles, issuing a total of 2,398 summonses to 939 vehicles under the ongoing “War on Overloaded Commercial Vehicles” operation since October 14. The large-scale crackdown, which targets traffic violations and unsafe practices among heavy vehicle operators, also saw 14 vehicles confiscated for serious offences ranging from excessive loads to expired licences.

According to the RTD, the confiscated vehicles were found committing multiple violations, including operating with expired Motor Vehicle Licences, lacking valid insurance coverage, and failing to meet service level conditions. Some were driven by individuals without valid Competent Driving Licences (CDL) or Vocational Licences. Among those detained, six of the drivers were identified as foreign nationals from Indonesia and India, while the remaining eight were Malaysians.

The department confirmed that legal action has been taken against both the drivers and vehicle owners under the Land Public Transport Act 2010 (APAD 2010) and the Road Transport Act 1987. The ongoing operation, which will continue until 31 December, is part of RTD’s broader effort to improve road safety and enforce strict compliance among commercial vehicle operators.

The Ministry of Transport has intensified its efforts to improve road safety, issuing 4,295 notices to heavy vehicle owners to verify the installation of Speed Limiter Devices (SLD). The initiative forms part of the government’s ongoing campaign to curb accidents involving commercial and heavy vehicles caused by excessive speeding.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the verification process is crucial in ensuring that all affected vehicles meet mandatory safety requirements. Vehicle owners who receive a notice are required to confirm that their SLD has been installed and return to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) within 14 days for inspection and approval. Those who comply within the given timeframe will not face any penalties.

He explained that enforcement activities have already produced positive results, with more heavy vehicle operators now adhering to the installation requirement. The government’s continued oversight, he said, has encouraged stronger compliance across the industry.

Beliau didenda kerana memakai baju-T tanpa kolar.

Did you know that you could be issued a fine by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) if you are not dressed appropriately when driving? If you are an e-hailing or commercial vehicle driver that is.

Recently an e-hailing driver from Langkawi, Kedah shared his experience with JPJ officers where he was issued a fine for wearing a round neck t-shirt instead of a collared one.

Posting on Facebook, the driver detailed his shocking experience where he lamented about his experience with the enforcement officer.

“This is the first time I have been issued a ticket by JPJ in 30 years of driving,” he said in the now removed post.

“Even though this is my first offence with JPJ, no warning, no compromise, I was just told to sign the fine and not talk too much,” he said in the post.

He was issued a fine for wearing a collarless t-shirt.

The fine was issued under the K15(b) PSV (LCDCP) 1959 T act where a driver can be issued a fine for not being appropriately dressed. If found guilty, the offender can be issued a fine ranging from RM150 which can go up to RM300 if not paid within 60 days.

The e-hailing driver expressed his frustration but conveyed his respect to the JPJ officer for being firm in upholding the law as well.

If you did not know, drivers of commercial vehicles including e-hailing vehicles and taxis need to be appropriately dressed at all times. The attire usually includes collared t-shirts, long pants and proper shoes as well.

Thousands of e-hailing drivers across Malaysia were left in limbo this week after SUVs appeared to be excluded from the government’s approved vehicle list for e-hailing services, sparking confusion and concern about their livelihood. Drivers who rely on SUVs to make a living began reporting issues with permit renewals and vehicle registrations, raising fears that their cars would no longer be eligible for e-hailing use.

The uncertainty spread quickly through the driver community, with both Gabungan E-Hailing Malaysia (GEM) and the Malaysian E-Hailing Drivers Association (Mehda) confirming that they had yet to receive any official clarification from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) or the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD). GEM’s representative, Masrizal Mahidin, said SUV owners were struggling to renew their e-hailing permits, a situation that could affect thousands of active drivers nationwide. Malaysia currently has more than three million people licensed to drive for e-hailing platforms.

Mehda president Daryl Chong revealed that roughly 2,000 of his association’s 9,000 members use SUVs for e-hailing. Without an official statement from the authorities, he warned that this administrative mix-up could disrupt Malaysia’s urban transport network and harm its reputation among tourists. Grab Malaysia later confirmed that some of its SUV drivers had encountered issues during registration and that the company was engaging with the authorities to resolve the problem.
