Rundingan lanjut menerusi beberapa sesi persidangan video turut dilakukan sebelum mencapai kata putus.

Penang is set to welcome a new direct flight route from another major city in China, further enhancing its connectivity with the Chinese market. The new route is expected to commence during China’s May Day Golden Week, pending final approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM).

According to NST, State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai revealed that discussions had taken place during the Routes Asia 2024 Forum, where Penang Global Tourism engaged with a Chinese airline to finalise the details. Several video conferences had already been conducted before reaching this stage. Once all necessary procedures are completed, the airline is expected to make an official announcement regarding the flight details.

The introduction of this direct connection is anticipated to capitalise on the surge in travel during China’s May Day holiday season, further strengthening Penang’s role as a regional aviation hub and an international tourist destination. Wong expressed confidence that the new route would provide a significant boost to tourism, business exchanges, and cultural interactions between Penang and China.

At present, Penang has direct air links to seven Chinese cities, namely Guangzhou, Xiamen, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Chongqing, and Xi’an. The upcoming addition will mark the eighth direct flight route between Penang and China, reinforcing the state’s growing appeal as a preferred destination for Chinese travellers.

Plans to reduce private car usage in Penang can only be considered once the state’s first light rail transit (LRT) line is completed, according to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. According to FMT, Chow emphasised that the LRT would serve as a critical starting point for a comprehensive public transport system in the state, eventually leading to decreased reliance on private vehicles.

“Rome wasn’t built in a day, and the same applies to public transport. The LRT is the beginning. Without the first line, we cannot build the connections needed for a more comprehensive rail system,” Chow said. He acknowledged that while discussions about limiting car use are necessary, they remain theoretical until the LRT is operational.

The city of Penang is set to launch a six-month trial of dedicated bus lanes on November 19, targeting rush-hour traffic in the city centre. These lanes, located along Komtar, Chowrasta stretches of Penang Road, and Jalan Ria, will operate from 6:30 am to 9:00 am and from 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm daily.

During these hours, only public buses, tour buses, taxis, and emergency vehicles will be permitted to use the lanes.

State executive councillor Zairil Khir Johari stated that the trial aims to assess the feasibility of bus lanes in reducing travel time, particularly during peak hours. The success of similar lanes in Kuala Lumpur, which reduced travel times by up to 15 minutes, suggests promising potential for Penang.

Following earlier reports that ferry services in Penang for 4-wheeled vehicles will be discontinued after the end of this year, the government has stepped in to provide funds to enable them to continue. RM30 million will be given to Penang Port Sdn Bhd which operates the remaining two ferries for maintenance and repairs.

The announcement of the end of the 126-year old ferry service drew public criticism as the ferries are considered iconic symbols of the island. However, due to their age, the remaining two ferries have been proving to become costly to maintain so it was decided to stop using one of them while the other would only be for motorcycles and bicycles for 6 months. Pedestrian ferry services would also be provided on speedboats pending the supply of larger and faster boats in July 2021.
