Although volume matters in local assembly to justify the investment in jigs at the plant, the premium manufacturers like BMW have still chosen to assemble their flagship models locally even though the volume may not be large. Local assembly, with the incentives provided by the government, allows them to price their models more competitively than if they were brought in as completely built-up (CBU) models so it is essential to do so in order to grow volumes.

The X7, which is the flagship SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle) of the BMW range, has been assembled since early 2021 (on sale since May of the same year) at the BMW facility in the Inokom plant in Kedah. For 2023, the model – named ‘The President’ by BMW – has received updates which include cosmetic changes as well as more enhanced digitalisation capabilities.

Fuel prices after midnight today will see RON97 petrol reduced by 10 a litre to RM4.20, with other grades remaining unchanged.

FUEL-SAVING TIPS

Slow and steady: You don’t have to drive at a crawl to save fuel but if you just drive more frequently at 80/90 km/h instead of 100/110 km/h, you could save 10 to 15% in fuel. Keeping a steady speed rather than ‘pumping‘ the pedal will also save on fuel.

Right tyre pressures: Under-inflated tyres will cause more rolling resistance (not to mention faster wear) which will worsen fuel consumption. Be sure they are inflated to the minimum recommended by the manufacturer and a bit more might also be better.

Service the engine regularly: Engine parts wear out or get dirty over time and reduce the operating efficiency of the engine. Regular servicing ensures that adjustments are set correctly and periodically, parts like filters or sparkplugs need to be replaced.

Plan trips: If you have different places to go on a single journey, spend a few minutes to think about the route so that you avoid congested areas. You may have to travel a few extra kilometres using a less congested route but you will actually use less fuel because the car won’t be stuck in a jam burning fuel going nowhere. Plus you will probably be less stressed out when you reach your destination.

Switch off the engine more: Many motorists do not fully realize that the engine is burning fuel every second it is running. They will keep the engine running for long periods while waiting for someone to buy things or waiting for their children to come out from school. This is very wasteful and running the air-conditioner at the same time wastes more fuel. Switch off the engine when you are going to be stationary for more than 5 minutes and you’ll find your fuel consumption improving.

Don’t carry unnecessary weight: The less weight your car has to move, the less hard the engine has to work. So whatever you do not need to keep in the boot should be taken out. This includes those golfbags.

Honda’s popular HR-V Sport Hybrid has received updating with revised lighting units front and rear, a new exterior body colour and some interior enhancements. The crossover SUV is priced from RM113,954.82 (excluding insurance) with full exemption of sales tax until the end of this year.

New lights, new colour
The revisions to the lighting units see a change to LEDs which should provide longer service life while drawing less electrical energy. The new exterior colour is Platinum White Pearl (with a surcharge of RM272.72), a distinctive finish which joins the other choices of Lunar Silver Metallic and Modern Steel Metallic. The door handles are also finished in chrome for this updated model.

For the interior, the HR-V Sport Hybrid now comes with a 7-inch colour display with large icons for easy management. The infotainment system has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so compatible smartphones can be easily connected. There are also two USB ports available for recharging of portable electronic devices, while a 3-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel is now provided.

8-year warranty for battery pack
The hybrid version of the HR-V, which was first introduced in 2015 and then updated in 2019, uses the i-DCD hybrid powertrain. Developed with Earth Dreams technology, this consists of a 1.5-litre DOHC i-VTEC engine with Direct Injection combined with 7-Speed Dual-Clutch Transmission and Integrated High Power Motor. Electricity is supplied by a high-power lithium-ion battery pack and the combined system output is 152 ps/190 Nm, which is comparable to a conventional 2-litre engine. The battery pack has a warranty of 8 years and unlimited mileage, 3 years longer than the warranty for the rest of the vehicle (which also has unlimited mileage).

Over 103,000 units on Malaysian roads
Over 103,000 units of the HR-V have been sold in Malaysia and it has accounted for 18% of Honda sales in this country in 2021. According to Honda Malaysia, it continues to be the leader the non-national compact SUV segment with a 71% market share (as of June 2021).

“The HR-V has remained Malaysians’ favourite Compact SUV with its versatility, spaciousness and stylish exterior appearance. Having considered market feedback and demands, we have introduced exterior upgrades to the hybrid variant. With the overall package and attractive pricing, we believe it will be the preferred choice for customers who are seeking a Compact SUV body type with a thrilling hybrid performance,” said Honda Malaysia’s Managing Director & CEO, Madoka Chujo.

The Tiguan, Volkswagen’s bestselling model, has received feature upgrades for the 2021 Allspace R-Line version. The upgrades provide additional convenience to occupants with respect to using personal devices and smartphones.

While most cars have USB ports nowadays – for recharging devices or accessing data and content – it’s still the transitional stage when the latest smartphones come with the larger, more efficient USB-C ports but the ports in the cars are the older USB ports which are smaller and of a different shape too.

Now the latest Tiguan Allspace R-Line comes with USB-C ports which can handle higher power, so recharging is faster and data transfer speeds are also faster. The good thing about a USB-C port is that you can insert the cable either way, instead of having to look for the right side up.

Connectivity is also improved with wireless App-Connect for Apple Car Play. This allows mirroring apps from the iPhone onto the infotainment system and accessing them using the touchscreen. So instead of having to look at a Waze map on the small phone screen, you can view it on the larger 9.2-inch colour display on the dashboard.

Priced from RM209,637 (excluding insurance), the Tiguan Allspace R-Line has a powerful 2.0TSI turbocharged direct injection petrol engine with an efficient and slick 7-speed wet clutch direct shift gearbox (DSG). The engine’s 220 ps/350 Nm goes to all four wheels with the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system distributing power flows front and rear intelligently.

Besides a 20% discount on Volkswagen engine oil, customers will also receive a car-care kit if they spend a minimum of RM1,200 when they send their vehicle for servicing at an authorised dealership.

Aftersales Raya Campaign
Until June 13, 2021, Volkswagen owners who send their vehicles for servicing at authorized Volkswagen dealerships can get a 20% discount on Volkswagen Genuine Oil. Those who spend a minimum of RM1,200 during the visit will receive a complimentary car care kit and free Raya packets (while stocks last).

Volkswagen at ACE
The latest Tiguan Allspace R-Line and other Volkswagen models are on display at the Auto Car Expo (ACE) at Setia City Convention Centre in Selangor this weekend. Besides ongoing promotions, there’s also an additional RM1,000 cash rebate for purchases made at the event. If you’re not ready to buy a brand new Volkswagen, there are also quality pre-owned units at the event from Das WeltAuto.

Those who book a Passat Elegance and R-Line will receive a complimentary all-expenses paid trip to the Pangkor Laut Resort in Perak. Additionally, the Passat Elegance comes with 1-year of free insurance coverage worth up to RM5,500, while the Passat R-Line comes with free petrol for a year (worth RM2,500).

As the first global model to be developed by Toyota GAZOO Racing, the Toyota GR Supra has made an impact wherever it has been launched, including Malaysia. Besides drawing on Toyota’s sportscar heritage, the fifth generation in the legendary nameplate also has  advanced powertrain, chassis and safety technologies.

In the spirit of Kaizen (Japanese for ‘constant improvement’), the latest GR Supra has received upgrades which further extend its capabilities. Specifically, the 3-litre engine has additional output which should deliver better performance numbers.

2020 Toyota GR Supra

The upgrades centre around the turbocharged inline-six engine which now delivers 388 ps of power at between 5800 and 6500 rpm, an increase of 14% compared to the output when the model was originally launched.

2020 Toyota GR Supra

Maximum torque remains at 500 Nm, but peaks through a slightly wider range of 1800 rpm – 5000 rpm instead of 1600 rpm to 4500 rpm.

The engineers increased the power output not just by tuning but also added a new dual-branch exhaust manifold with 6 ports (instead of two), which improves heat management. A new piston design also reduces the engine’s compression ratio from 11:1 to 10.2:1.

The improved engine with the torque band raised retains the eagerness to rev to the redline. With the standard 8-speed ZF automatic transmission, the acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h is said to be 2/10ths of a second quicker, or a claimed 4.1 seconds from 4.3 seconds.

Complementing the extra power are some chassis improvements aimed at increasing roll resistance and enhanced cornering stability. Taking note of feedback from owner in the time that the car has been in the market, the latest GR Supra has received chassis retuning with a new Performance Rod added to increase lateral rigidity.

Apart from the fitment of red-coloured brake calipers with the Supra logo at the front, other technical specifications and features remain the same. Standard with the GR Supra are the Adaptive Variable Suspension and Electronically-Controlled Limited-Slip Differential.

There are seven colour choices customers can select from, but the Deep Blue Metallic exterior finish is no longer available. The available colours are Prominence Red, Lightning Yellow, White Metallic, Silver Metallic, Ice Grey Metallic, Black Metallic and Matte Storm Grey Metallic.

To enable its drivers to take the car to its limits safely, advanced technologies are used. These technologies include a variety of active systems which work together to assist the driver when necessary. Additionally, there are features like a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, Intelligent Parking Sensor with Emergency Braking Function and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

The standard interior features of the GR Supra include a head-Up Display, memory function for the power seat and JBL audio system with 12 speakers situated around the cabin.

2020 Toyota GR Supra

Priced from RM589,987 (with sales tax exemption and without insurance) and RM611,880 (without sales tax exemption and without insurance), the new GR Supra is now available for booking from selected authorised Toyota GR Garage showrooms nationwide.

Over 36,000 units have been sold nationwide which translated into a 45% market share in 2019, which helped the BR-V maintain its position as the leader in its non-national segment.

Honda BR-V World Premiere
